I\'m considering buying a Zaurus 5xxx for the obivous reasons however I would like a decently capable gaming device as well. I see that the Zaurus has an impressive list of emulators however I\'m having trouble coming up with information on how well they perform as well as how difficult they are to control with not-quite-a-gamepad Zaurus controls. The ones I would be most interested in are NES, SNES, and SMS. I also saw that there was a version of Quake ported to the Z. What kind of abysmal framerates would something like that crank out?
Thank you for your time.

quake doesn\'t work very well on the 5500, or any pda for that matter. Its more a proof of concept.
But you can get nes and snes emulators, check out the ZSI.
I personaly use the the z version of UAE all the time to listen to mods

This is going to sound dumd. But is there any type of emualtors like vmware for the sl-5500?

There is dosbox if you want to run dos programs. I also saw a picture of one 5x00 running win98 (it was the boot screen, don\'t know how far it gets, I wouldn\'t think about running word on it though
Snes9x runs great, nes emulator is perfect. The genesis will yeild under 1 fps (I know not why) and I have no idea how to save in snes9x... (help on that would be great)
-
Thank you for your feedback. Glad to hear NES and SNES are decently emulated.
-
Hit shift and 7 to save in snex9x
cheers ad
-
ps by the way.... you need to have a folder set up in the game directory called \"save\"
cheers ad
-
Thank you very much, I read through snes9x documentation and the only thing I could find were F# keys to save and load.
Hmmm... if shift 7 saves, I\'m sure I\'ll be able to figure out how to load...
-
I guess I can\'t figure it out, how do you load?
-
it\'s crtl + shift + 7 to save and shift + 7 to load. Make sure you\'ve got the save directory and it\'ll pop up a message on the screen to tell you it\'s succesfully saved.

and by crtl, I mean \"Fn\" :-)

that pic was of bochs and its a pain in the butt to try to get even win3.1 working on the Z under bochs. I tried usng FreeDos (granted MS-DOS woulda been better but...) and its REALY SLOW!
-
how well does the gnu emu run?
-
gnu emu? Exactly what emulator are you talking about?
-
Hey?
Any can send me a copy of binaries of DOSBOX for use on SL-5500?
-
I've used snes9x quite a bit* but is there any way to map the directional pad and app buttons on Zaurus? (as it is a little awkward to play using the keyboard)
(Using an SL5500 with Sharp 3.13 rom)
Thanks
* Works really well as long as -ns option is added.

i'm currently going through a load of games suitable for snes, gameboy, c64 and mame. my general experience as been that all 8-bit computers and consoles emulate at 1:1 speed (if not faster). this applies to mame games using the z80 processor.
16-bit and more advanced mame games will be have some form of slow down on the sl-5500.
i've read in one of the post that quake has started to speed up because of the use of soft floating point maths, but this may only be applicable for more advanced zaurus models i.e. cl-xxx.
check out my signature for a link to my wiki page, you may find it useful to narrow down your search for games suited the zaurus joystick layout.
if all you want to do is play emulators you may want to think about a gp2x whose architecture is better suited to this than the zaurus. also the emulators whether ported or native are being handled by guys dedicated to the cause rather than just porting over like for like. this is what i plan on doing.
