Title: We Need More Ppl To Help Betatest Milkytracker
Post by: cho1ce on April 19, 2006, 04:48:51 pm
if you would like to help betatest milkytracker of the Z 5500 please contact Peter at milkytracker.net @ this address:
support "at" milkytracker.net

we need as many of you who are willing to help.

i would imagine it could also run on a 5600, but am unsure.

other zaurus models might work too.

Following on the "music app" topic, does anyone know of a score-editing/playing program for the zaurus?

if you have a Cx00 based Zaurus, and X (OZ/GPE X/QT or pdaXrom) there's [a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=17857&view=findpost&p=123579]Denemo[/url]
currently needs Timidity for playback, which is beastly slow-
I'm trying to find an an alternative mechanism for playback; but as a midi score editor / publisher it works fine.

Will contact and test it for Sharp/Poodle, but what files does it play?

Actually, what the hell IS it?

I'm just used to Rosegarden and JACK.

Hmmm. . . Any chance of THOSE for Zaurus?

Trackers play MOD/XM music files.

I've built rosegarden for pdaXrom; it runs... but not well; segfaulting everywhere,
and the windows don't fit well on a QVGA/VGA display.

OTOH, Denemo and AMUC seem to do most of what Rosegarden does; and are fine in X on VGA, but on a Poodle, the tracker is going to give you much better use of screen realestate. (and may be faster, too!)

What about Jack? I suppose there's no point on a PDA. . . Well, maybe on a clocked 3100/3200, but that's it. . .

great  a tracker is a composition tool unlike most of what your probably familiar with, instead of scrolling left to right it , it scrolls down, so you make your patterns from top to bottom. on the milkytracker site, there is quite a bit of documents you can get, to help you understand this method of composition. imo its one of the oldest secrets of music making, aphex, squarepusher, bogdan the list goes on an on, have all used trackers for their creations, this tracker has roots to a program called Protracker, made for use on amiga.

there are mass amounts of modules on ftp
modules are the 'song files' they consist of wav samples and sequencing data.
essentially a compressed archive made so that they may be shared among others without any type of dependency problems.

i suggest checking out Wash U's ftp.

enjoy

Why not post milkytracker here, so anyone that wants to try it, can do so?
Some people don't like to have to go "ask" someone if they can try or download something.
Just my 2¢

i'm not positive but i think that Peter did not want it spread around since *it is in testing.

an im only the guy that asked Peter to bring it over to the zaurus, an he did. (rather quickly too!)
i donated a hefty amount of cash, i wanted to show him much it meant to me. since milkytracker is free. but, im the last person on earth a dev would want to have as a beta tester!  i dont know what it is, but somehow i always seem to upset developers when i try to test their programs. (i think i might have some expression/communication issues.)
alot of them think of there programs like they are offspring, (i would too) tho im one of those guys that cant seem to word things right, an it always feel like i hurt their feelings somehow by the way i describe bugs an problems.

anyhow, i emailed him the other day but i think he might be on vaction or away for a moment. i do completely agree with you Jon, and im sure it would bring alot more ppl.

last month Peter emailed me version milkytracker_0.90.40_arm.ipk
(the latest one i have)
and it isnt working right, its a bit dodgy, he had did something to make it run better for some other zaurus users but somewhere it got goofed for me, it took me along time to respond, basically i installed it an it took about 5 minutes for me to figure out how to get it to work (something with the audio driver) so then i rebooted an it was still goofing up so then i put it aside for a month. this version does actually work for me to some degree it is more stable but its weird because some of the instruments are not playing right.

If anyone wants to test the version come and join #milkytracker on IRC (Espernet)

Hmmm. . . Loads, but no audio output.

Have emailed FBR1.0

(Ferretian Bug Reporting system - the One is it's the first bug found, the 0 because it's the first time I've mailed on this bug: If it exists in later revisions, then 1.1 1,.2 XD)

P.S. FBR may suck, but I like it.

haha uh i cant helkp but wonder what your on about.??

i jsut realized you probably are talking of milky an if your using the lastest one, its weird, you have to fiddle with the thing in the 1st config page to the bottom right where it say amiga an linear frequencies, at least thats how i got it to work, but if it is the same one you will also have troubles (well more then likely)

i wrote  Peter the other day an he replied saying that it was because he was working on getting protracker mods running, which kinda confused me, why he would write an ipk because i guiess he kknew it wasnt gonna work, it has to do with a drthe au audio driver not working right, an i guess he knew that. i think maybe he was maput off that i wasnt bug reporting, well like i said above  ya know. i get discouraged  especially w because i find bug but can nevedr figure out how to reproduce them, aoh well .

i asked him if he was going to release the source in that same message, i didnt realize that they had already talked about this on the mt forum, an that kinda pisses me off cuz now i know theres no real hope to ever be able to have milky in portrait mode. its kinda retarded having it in landscape mode using the keyboard sideways.

there was a point when i would have settled for anything, that point pretty much came an gone now anyhow i shouldnt be posting any of this cuz im sitting at the airport irratated cuz my rides isnt here. but moments like these give me a knack for cutting through the bullshit an getting to the point of whats on my mind even if it end up regretting it an feeling like a jerk , hehe i'll prolly just come back an edit!!!!

@Ferret the 2nd to last version that should actually work for you  it does for me, its not as stable as 0940 but its very usable an sounds really good to, so an workie wehn you load things up
ez
if you dont have it i'll send it to ya

He told me he was gonna recompile a new version that should work and send it to me.

Haven't had it yet. Will report back when I do.

i kinda regret getting so excited over this
for some reason i had thought this was naturally going to be open source
it would be nice if this was open source , the landscape layout just ruins my idea of usablity.
to really be  usefull for me i kinda need the portrait mode .
so.
i'll prolly check back once in a while, i hope he will continue to update & improve the zaurus version & hopefully post it to a feed sometime. . at least so everyone else will be able to play with it.

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=123831\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I compiled Mup (http://www.arkkra.com) for my Zaurus.

Mup is a program that takes text "scores" that you create with any old text editor and makes postscript and midi output.  Nice, fast little program, doesn't cost too much, and generates really nice-looking output.

Unfortunately, there's no good way to view postscript on a Z.  :-(  I compiled Ghostscript for the Sharp ROM, but then I moved to 3.5.3 and now Ghostscript won't run.  I can still play the midi output with timidity, though.
