Title: Zaurus 5500 Battery?
Post by: Ventmore on April 20, 2006, 08:13:37 pm
I was just about to order a new battery from brando, when I realised that the 5500 wasn't mentioned on the list of supported models.  I hadn't noticed when I looked before...just that it looked the same and was 950mAh.

It says it is for the Zaurus SL-C860/C760/C750/C700.  DOes the 5500 use the same battery as these models?

Here is the link:

Yes... but I would check around for a lower price before I ordered it.

Never mind......after a fair bit of googling, I found a site that mentions all of those models and the 5500 on the same battery, so it would seem to be the right one.

Mods...please feel free to delete this thread

Thnanks for the reply Greg.  Unfortunately, I am in the UK, and you literally can't get hold of them here.  Amazon.com will not ship them, and the only company I found the other day was going to charge me around $80 just to ship.  Glad I wasn't drinking anything when I got the quote, 'cos I'd have spat it on the keyboard

One of the forum members from Germany sells a battery that works with the 5500. I’ve never used one, but here is the thread:

Thanks Greg.  I had seen that topic, but didn't know if the batteries were still available.  Hopefully, he will get back to me on the thread.

There have been a few threads about extending battery life on the 5500 (collie).
Solutions come down to three.
1) Modifying camera similarly shaped camera batteries to fit collie, which is what our German friend was doing.
2) An external battery pack that plugs into the zaurus
3) Wiring an external battery ( same voltage) in PARALLEL to the zaurus battery.  A couple of people tried a battery from sony for the palm pda and seem to have had luck with that.  When I get some time I'll see if I can't dig up the threads.

There you go.  This is definitely a mod at your own risk.  I just bought two of the thin sony batteries
http://www.allelectronics.com/cgi-bin/cate...T-42&type=store (http://www.allelectronics.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?category=search&item=LBAT-42&type=store)
I wired one directly to the positive and negative leads and then popped the battery in.  I've recharged it twice and it give an extra couple of hours or more, depending on what your running.
I'm not an electrician, but I figured that if I couldn't get more than an hour with a wifi card, the zaurus wasn't worth my time, so it was worth the risk.
I haven't noticed any heat issues, or any other issues for that matter.  I had it stuffed into a pda case to hold the whole thing on the back.  I'll see if I can come up with some kind of case mod to hold it on.

One last warning, screwing up your wiring or overheating these batteries can be a really bad thing.  Battery acid chemical burns are serious business, so attempt at your own risk.

Cheers.
