DRM actually has its usefulness in managing documents, ie who wrote what document. just imagine the bureaucracy at government institutions and their many thousands of file cabinets of red taped documents. They need DRM to keep track of those documents without having to physically lock up the stacks of papers in different dungeons
However, there is also some misguided use of this technology, in particular the entertainment industry where they think that they have the right to lock files to certain devices which actually infringes on the user's right to have legitimate backup copies (and yes, there are ways of gettings certain keys to migrate files but it requires an internet connection to their sites which can only work if they can gurantee that their sites are secure and not using the data they collect for marketing purposes or otherwise infringe on your privacy). security and privacy are the big concerns here. Even Microsoft had problems convincing people that their passport solution was secure and they tried to force people to use it on their MSN and Hotmail services, hence I don't use them anymore.
well, enough rambling from me
just my 5c (since we don't have 2c coins any more down here)

I dunno why they would want DRM. Most linux software is open source, so you might have a look at the source and bypass any restriction anyway. Plus Stallman sounds very unhappy with DRM and want to ban them in GPL 3. If you find the transcripted presentation he made a while ago, you'll find all the reasons he gave. Who could blame him ? I don't like my rights to be restricted anyway.

is DRM the same thing as SD, as in Secure Digital?

On one hand DRM is a major pain, and it has major problems as a concept.
On the other hand, it's a fact of life. The only thing that sucks worse than DRM is having to boot into Windows to access my DRM'd data So if DRM must exist, then I'd rather have it under Linux than not.. Otherwise it can be used as a wedge to lock Linux users out in the cold.

My assumption is that DRM was originally created to stop people from copying commercial softwares. Therefore stuff you create in a certain filetype is locked do to the company owning the rights to that extension. jpeg mpeg mpeg2, now a days, you pay royalty fee or something in that matter. jpeg is starting to suffer the same fate but i cant remember where i last read up on this. I have over 1000 personal pictures scanned in jpeg and i wish not to spend 1000 dollars for a image viewing jpeg software. Even linux would suffer the same fate. for now, if you want to encode in winamp mp3, you need to pay up 15 dollars for it. sucks. I wonder why those idiots don't use lame. Just talking guys but DRM is a major reason why i did not jump into Tech, software developing to begin with.
For now, I just dable.

Actually, I think you're talking about patents, not DRM. MP3 is based on patented technology, so the patent holder is excercising their rights. That's why formats like ogg exist.
DRM, on the other hand, forces me to use Windows to view/archive the shows I download off my TiVo. It's not preventing me from stealing, it's just a pain, basically only there so that the media companies don't sue Tivo. That's one example. Another is music stores like iTunes and Napster. If you want to use them, you're locked into Windows or Mac.
Even though DRM sucks, Lack of DRM on Linux becomes an obsticle to more adoption of Linux
