Today, I tried to update the ROM on my 5500 from 2.38 to 3.13. I downloaded the ROM update, and copied it to my CF card. The card is a 64Mb Integral, formatted to FAT16. There was nothing else on the card except for Ospack.
When I pressed C and D, and pressed the reset button, both of the lights did come on, and then went off about 3-4 seconds later. I left it for a few minutes just to make sure, then reset and rebooted, but the update hadn't been applied. The device was at least still working though.
I tried the process twice more with the same results.
In the end, I updated it via windows and the cradle.
You're probably wondering why I'm bothered, if it has eventually worked, but I intend to try one of the other ROMs in the near future (tkrom maybe), so I would like to be able to flash from the CF card.
Could it just be an incompatible card?
All advice appreciated

Where is the reset button. I am trying to update the rom myself but I can not find the reset buttom. Looks stupid, but I just got the PDA and do not know much yet. I would appreciate any help

It is located underneath the battery cover. Have a look here for the updating process.

Thanks for the quick reply. You are making my day :). I have downloaded the latest sync program from sharp and my Zaurus hace older rom. Windows XP can not connect to Zaurus. can it be conflict between old rom and new syn. do I need to install old Sync or am I doing anything wrong?
Thanks

From what I can gather...and I'm just new at this myself...you must use the old drivers, then run the setup program in the newly downloaded software. The second option on the setup program is to update the ROM. Before you update, you have to stop any of the old Zaurus apps running in the systray (intellisync, or qtopia desktop), then proceed with the flash. After that, you can install the new software and drivers.
There is a manual included with the setup files, under CD-v313/Manuals/5500UpgradeInstructions.pdf
I followed that, and it worked a treat.
Cheers

Could it just be an incompatible card?
It has been reported that 'some CF-cards simply will not flash a Z'.
I would however suggest that you follow this 'HowTo' and reformat your CF-card for your next attempt at flashing.

Cheers Greg...I'll give that a go. I'm getting a 1Gb SD card in the next few days, so I'll be moving to the tkrom I think, and getting everything setup as I want it

If you are running windows xp with ntfs partition, it will somehow damage ospack. extract ospack directly into the cf card and not to your hardrive. THis information was usefull for me a while back. Don't know why but it worked for me.

I had no problem with that on my XP install ... enable showing file extensions, and make sure the files are denoted correctly.
