Title: Homemade 5x00 hard case
Post by: Anonymous on February 23, 2004, 12:16:29 am
I started with a Belkin universal hard case from circuit city for $30....

http://www.circuitcity.com/detail.jsp?c=1&...30&catoid=-9281 (http://www.circuitcity.com/detail.jsp?c=1&b=g&qp=0450702300231&bookmark=bookmark_0&oid=75030&catoid=-9281)

It is slightly too small for the 5x00. But it fits even the 5600 in all directions except the top to bottom length.

The top edge of the case is a strip of dark red plexiglass type material designed to allow pda\'s that have thier infrared on top to broadcast even with the case closed.

My 5600 usually has a symbol wifi card sticking out on top all the time anyway.  So I tried my idea.....to cut out the red plexiglass and see if I could modify the case enough that the 5600 would fit.

I took a dremel tool and cut out the red plexiglass strip as well as some of the black plastic from the edges of both tops.  It has two top edges since it opens like a book. I cut away some of the black plastic on both edges.

Now it was decision time.   There are two possibilities.

One is to take the protective plastic screen cover off the zaurus and take the two bottom pda supports off the belkin (they twist and snap in/out), such that the whole zaurus will fit inside the belkin with only the top exposed so that cf cards and headphones are available.  Drawback is that without the bottom supports the zaurus is not held as firmly in place.  But the zaurus actually fits now.  The measurements are so slight, that with the plastic removed from the edges and with the supports removed, the only thing still in the way is the zaurus screen protector.

The other option(which I opted for) is to leave the screen protector on, leave the pda supports on, and cut away the actual metal-colored surface material that surrounds the outside of the belkin, making the top hole big enough for the whole top edge of the zaurus to but out slightly.  Now if the side supports of the belkin are adjusted just right, it holds the zaurus in place whether the screeen protector is flipped up or down.  To open or close the screen protector simply slide the zaurus up slightly enough for the protector\'s hinges to clear the support grips.  The top hole has to be cut big enough so that the belkin can shut properly.  With it closed, the top edge of the zaurus barely protrudes from the belkin.  But it looks just like a laptop with card slot and headphone jack.  And the metal color of the 5600 matches the belikin outer surface color perfectly.  If you are more careful than I, you can cut the hole more perfectly so that it lines up with the top edge of the zaurus.

If I get it together I will post pictures.  But don\'t hold your breath.

You guys have all seen the zip up 6\" by 7\" 20 cd cases haven\'t you?   I found one of those made of metal clamshell, glued some foam into it  and  cut out holes for my zaurus, keyboard, and all other accesories.  It fits great, and no ammount of bashing it around in my back pack will damage my computer.
