Title: Items Not To Plug Into Usb Port
Post by: darkage on April 22, 2006, 07:17:35 am
I have a USB host cable on order and have never used the onboard USB port.

The only item I know not to plug into the USB port directly would be external Hard Drives (typical hi current device) without the aid of a self powered  usb hub.

Any other wise suggestions of what not to plug into the USB port.   Been reading thru posts of ppl frying their Z with USB sync cables.  yikes!  I guess that comes down to cable quality for that one.

I think most external hard drives have their own power supply.  USB doesn't provide enough juice for that even on desktop systems.

BTW, I've safely used an external hard drive with my Z.

The one USB device I own that I'm afraid to try on the Zauris is my Bearpaw scanner.   It gets all it's power from USB.

If you would find a usb device will draw it current from the USB port on the Z...  Be prepared for horrible battery life...

Or if you're not interested in carrying around power supplies, you could always go [a href=\"http://www.cyberpowersystems.com/CPH420MP.asp]this route[/url].

I have one and it performs nicely.

The Z doesn't really provide enough power for most USB devices.  My USB-Ethernet controller won't work w/o using a powered hub.

I have found it is a really bad idea to plug my cat into my Zaurus's USB port.

It's also good to avoid plugging the mains into it.

I've two got usb ethernet adaptors and both work fine powered by the Z. Perhaps you should get another model seeing as they're dirt cheap ~USD5-6.
