Requests for packages which are in OE and need to be upgraded and added to the (upgrades) feed.
Rules the same as in previous versions:
1. package MUST already exist in OpenEmbedded
2. it has to be package - we won't build whole OPIE
Thread will get open after release.
List of packages which was available without upgrades. (http://ewi546.ewi.utwente.nl/tmp/hrw/t/oz354-packages-list.txt)
Please do not start offtopic discussions here - I'm going to clean from time to time.

I moved some stuff from feed/x11/ to feed/base/
Added:
- keymap-locales by CoreDump
This package show how to modify kernel keymap to get localized characters on collie and c7x0.

The rsync ipk seems to be missing, or am I missing a feed? thks

I'd really love to be able to figure out some missing keys on my poodle under GPE (ctrl-c comes to mind). What do I do?
Any chance of getting [a href=\"http://ipkgfind.handhelds.org/details.phtml?package=greader&official=&format=]greader to work under GPE? I'm tring to get it running, but I may be mistaken that currently GPE doesn't use GTK2?
Otherwise, if anybody could PLEASE recomend a GPE book reader?
thks

I have a couple of requests...
gnupg - versions older than 1.4.2.2 are susceptible to a signature spoofing attack.
otpkeygen - Also mentioned in an earlier thread. I checked the 3.5.4 feeds and didn't see it anywhere in the 3.5.4 directories.
Thanks and great job...
--Storm
-
Added:
- gnupg 1.4.2.2 (security fix)
- otpkeygen 1.3.0 (readded after fixing packaging)
- rsync 2.6.7
- iqnotes 2.1.0rc1 (as 2.0.99-2.1.0rc1)
- gnumeric 1.6.2
- abiword 2.4.2
- mplayer-atty 1.1.5 (for c7x0)
- alsa 1.0.10 stuff (mplayer-atty needs libasound)
- gdb 6.3
After using otpkeygen few times I'm thinking about removing it from feed. It looks like shit (hardcoded font names & sizes), removed qpe.conf on my Z so I had to configure appearance again...
Or one day I will look inside of it and patch it to behave correctly.

So thats what the problem is... I emailed the author just prior to my posting the original request, and he told me that he didn't have anything with OZ, but that "just recompiling" should fix the wiped-out appearance problem.
I agree that it looks terrible, but in spite of its problems, its the only app that I have found that fills its particular niche. And I do use one-time passwords fairly extensively.
Thanks again, HRW.

Thanks hrw. I've emailed the maintainer (Greg Berenfield) to see if he can provide it.
Is there any way that I can see what packages are available in OE, short of checking out the whole source tree?
[a href=\"http://ewi546.ewi.utwente.nl/tmp/hrw/t/oz354-packages-list.txt]http://ewi546.ewi.utwente.nl/tmp/hrw/t/oz3...ckages-list.txt

guys: I removed some maemo related stuff from feeds and will rebuild parts of GPE - for example gpe-filemanager

Hi guys,
With ekiga 2.0 now released would it be feasible to run it on gpe ? If yes would it be something you could add to the gpe feed ?
Thanks again Hrw for your tremendeous job

Requesting that Gaim include the following protocols by default:
Jabber
Yahoo
Oscar
MSN
IRC
Currently, only Jabber and IRC are enabled by default. The others require manual install.
Suggest that alert sounds be enabled by default.
Also, suggest that Gaim include an encryption plugin like OTR, or gaim-encryption.
Thanks,
Randall.

The sudo package (http://ewi546.ewi.utwente.nl/mirror/www.openzaurus.org/official/unstable/3.5.4//feed/base/sudo_1.6.8p12-r4_arm.ipk) seems to have lost it's suid bit on the binary. thks

rrnwexec: gaim will stay as it is - we prefer to not force too much deps.
grog: submit bug for that sudo thing

Changes in feeds:

- rebuilded all packages which found broken
- firefox is instalable now
- thunderbird is instalable now
Tosa got "keymaps" package in newer version - with fixed numbers problem.

Try using gpe-mini-browser instead of dillo, it's faster and supports more stuff (css, javascript, AJAX, etc)

I actually just installed dillo 'cause I couldn't get gpe-mini-browser to open local files. Maybe you can stear me back of the right path . In dillo there's a menu option to open a local file with a file browser. Not much to offer in mini other than the url box, & no matter what I typed in it wouldn't open a page that dillo or even links has no problems with.
As well, mini didn't recognize simple href tags pointing within the same page that work fine in all other browsers I've seen. Any idea about that?

The man package (http://ewi546.ewi.utwente.nl/mirror/www.openzaurus.org/official/unstable/3.5.4//feed/base/man_1.5p-r1_arm.ipk) understandably depends on groff, which is nowhere to be found (even on ipkgfind). Is it available to be added? I'd love to be able to have the man pages installed on my sd card!

mpc and ncmpc are in the feed but not the daemon mpd, tried compiling it, using binaries fom other pakages and other such unspeakable things and couldnt get it to work
do you want this as a bug report, or just leave it as it is?

Added:

Changed:
- updater.sh for tosa (in images/tosa) which will use also zImage.bin as kernel (like it is on clamshells)

I think xoscope,
http://xoscope.sourceforge.net/ (http://xoscope.sourceforge.net/)
or something like it would be interesting on a Collie.
I have used it on my powerbook in combination with
a homemade electromagnetic field detector that I plug
into my audio in port.
The screen on the Collie is a little small, and may pose
a problem in porting xoscope, but if sound in is working
(is it? I have not been able to record memo on GPE yet,
but that may be just my problem) this would be a great
device for acquiering all sorts of interesting low voltage
signals.
(EMF meter: some inductors, an opamp (optional if you
have enough inductors or big enough coil), germanium
diodes to keep voltage swing close to half a volt, an audio
transformer (also optional), a 1/8 miniplug jack, and
male-male cable.)

I tried installing firefox and thunderbird to the SD card. Neither work.
During the install, the dependency issues seem to be fixed however cannot run the programs as neither knows where to find libraries... Is there a way to fix the paths in the ipk so that everything can find what it needs in order to run?
Thanks.
-
For local files with gpe-mini-browser, try file:///path/to/your/file.html.
That's three slashes: two for the file:// (like ftp:// or any other protocol), and then one to begin the path to the file. So, if you wanted to view the configuration of your local samba server in gpe-mini-browser (don't ask me why you'd want to do that), it'd be file:///etc/samba/smb.conf .

HRW, I can send you a larger SD card if that would help. I have one that I'm not using... Is there a specific type of SD that works with the 2.6 kernel?
-
rrnwexec: working/non working it depends on something but I do not know yet what it is.. Best way is checking on Zaurus with 2.6 kernel ofcourse but not everyone have this possibility. I've seen cards which looked identical but one worked, second gave timeouts and other errors. Supporting closed specs things in Linux is a problem - there are many cards which does not work and noone has specs to check why ;(

I will provide hostap update for OZ 3.5.4 soon.
Details:
- all modules version will be the same
- /etc/pcmcia/hostap_cs.conf moved into hostap-conf package
this is how we have it done in 3.5.4.1 - I got Pretec WiFi card today which works nice with hostap but 3.5.4 machines could try to use it with orinoco driver instead.

Can the qte package be modified to include codecs (i.e. remove the QT_NO_CODECS flag), or perhaps could an alternative package (qte-with-codecs) be created?
I am currently trying to port a Japanese input method (qpobox), something that is currently missing from Opie and, I believe, has prevented a lot of Japanese users from switching over to OZ. However, it, as well as a lot of other Japanese Qtopia-based software, depends on QTextCodec (in this case, QTextCodec("EUC-JP")).
In the meantime, is there any simple way that I can build it myself? The QT_NO_CODECS flag doesn't seem to be coming from the .bb file.

To make Qt/Embedded fit with our new KDE 3.5 Konqueror, we need to touch the qte configuration anyway. We will consider enabling the codecs.

I have a feeling this isn't the proper thread for this request, since it's not currently implemented, but...
I, of course, request BVDD driver support. It should increase the framebuffer performance greatly for apps that support it such as mplayer.
Here's the driver zipped up, ripped from mplayer-bvdd release:
http://www.friggingames.com/bvdd.zip (http://www.friggingames.com/bvdd.zip)
Just edit the two lines in the Makefile so it points to the cross-compile gcc and the kernel sources directory. Hopefully it's not much more work than that. Not sure if it should be a module/kernel patch. But it would be nice to see this supported any possible way.
I'd give it a compile but the kernel source's don't seem to be available publicly.
Thanks.

Correct, libcurses is not listed as a depends for links. I already had it installed from other stuff, that's why it wasn't a problem for me.

I guess I should have added my request here. I would like to use the FUSE kernel module in 3.5.4.1
Source code here: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.p...ckage_id=132802 (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=121684&package_id=132802)

- abiword-plugins 2.4.4 (some can stop abiword loading)
- enchant 1.2.5
- libwpd 0.8.4
- poppler 0.5.1
- epdfview 0.1.2
- xmame 0.100
Updated:
- opie-bluepin 1.2.1-r2 with wrapper (so it should work now)
Info:
- fbvncserver-kmodule for collie/poodle is already available in upgrades/machine/ feeds
Fuse: request it in OE bugtracker as it need kernel modules AND userspace apps.
Links does not need libncurses - it need gpm which need ncurses. And all those libs are installed when "ipkg install links" is used (just checked).
-
Can you add the option to zaurusd so that closing the lid to the clamshells only turns off the backlight, not suspend?
Thanks,
Jerry

Can we please enable hostap driver in wpa_supplicant? it is as easy as uncommenting single line in defconfig CONFIG_DRIVER_HOSTAP=y
Wpa_supplicant tends to work best with hostap driver in native mode, especially when authenticating with 802.11x networks. Using 0.4.8 with hostap driver disabled I cannot connect to wireless network at my workplace.
I tried to build wpa_supplicant myself but I think I didnt configure the tree properly because it used gcc 4
Thanks.

I haven't yet full understood the bug(s)...I'll do it later on.
I'll wait for the rc-2, then I'll install root-filesystem in order to check the /dev thing.
The problem could be missing devices or, more probably, some SUID bugs so that the permissions are wrong.
I got ppp working by manually adding /dev/rfcomm0 and /dev/ppp in "/lib/udev/devices/.
/etc/init.d/udev
# I hate this hack. -- Md
make_extra_nodes() {
if [ "$(echo /lib/udev/devices/*)" != /lib/udev/devices/*" ]; then
cp -a /lib/udev/devices/* /dev/

Probably I will give it in final 3.5.4.1 images and some time after will release 3.5.4.2 for collie/tosa/poodle (3.5.4.2 will be 3.5.4 + upgrades basically - any 3.5.4 user should be able to upgrade via 'ipkg update;ipkg upgrade').

just some things i would like:
usb-audio (kernel module)
zkbdd
and some bug fixes
man still broken "invalid device 'latin1'"
zsh symlink /usr/bin/zsh incorectly points to Hrw's home dir (which dosent exsist on my machine)
mpd has no universal init script (thogh some people like to run it as thier own user)
mpd dosent ship with /etc/mpd.conf file and dir structure is messed up (/var/lib/mpd, requires files and folders to be added)
/tmp (symlink to /var/tmp) has no stikybit set
running the bootstrap image and had to change TERM varible to linux to get color (not really a problem but IMHO if its running on a linux FB with the kernel doing term emulation then it should be set to t"linux)
no perl (automake fails as it is listed as a dependency
sorry for the list i have been caching these for awhile and never did get around to looking for that bugtracker, mabey could we get a program to auto submit bug reports? somithng quick whiped up in sh

Thanks alot, the one thing i have noticed about OZ is that the pakages dont seem to have the same level and intergration as some of the PC distros, id say its about 95% there but things like default PAM rules and other such stuff are not installed by default or config files being left off

Well, the obvious reason for this is that OZ is not a PC distro.
Always keep in mind that we are talking about PDAs with (usually) a very small rootfs.
Think Collies ~14Mb, or Poodles ~20Mb.
The SL-Cxx00 with 64 to 4000Mb are the exception, not the norm
When we create a package, all the superflous stuff gets thrown out due to space / RAM / CPU constraints.
Please try to do something like that (http://hentges.net/tmp/screenshots/Zaurus/Akita/Misc/essential-to-boot+wifi.jpg) with $RANDOM_PC_DISTRO
i guess its time for me to have another look at OE and update some pakages by hand (i really want to add htop, rtorrent and some other utility packages)

You probably need the new sdl stuff mickeyl added to .dev a while ago. The opie .desktop file isn't supposed to be in that .ipk but in a seperate ipk that depends on the main .ipk
-
I'd like dump_cis etc. to help me diagnose why a card that should be supported by pcmcia card services doesn't work on OZ.
-
True about the small space but why not just make $pakage_name-conf.ipkg like we have for the man pages so they can be installed, this is how ipkg was intended to be used (pacakages broken down to the smallest usable component to install what you need)
i still belive that OE "feels" messy to use, i dont know how others fell it just seems to me to be a bit inonsistent thogh that might just be due to the fact that i tend to concentrate on the cmd line more, i havet used gpe or opie but it seems to me that the people who do havent needed to do nearly as many hacks by hand to get things running nicly
while im on about it the display-brightness ipkg has a bug, uses head -1 instead of head -n 1 (somewhere in the first 10 lines), bug trackers are nice but i dont like having to do the entire email thing, i would rather just report it and move on, im still willing to whip up that auto bug tracking program if you want it
Bugs being submitted now
your right thogh when you have 4G its easy to forget

There is also a notice about an upcoming change in the spca project here (http://mxhaard.free.fr/download.html) and here (http://lists.zerezo.com/spca50x-devs/msg00644.html)
I have recently been looking at getting a small webcam for my Z. I hoped to have all the necessary bits in place for vacation next week, so even with the spca changes coming soon I would be greatful to be able to use it in the meantime.

Hrw, could you please add tinymail to the OZ/GPE package list? I'm still hunting for the holy grail - a fast light graphical MUA with IMAP/SSL and GPG support.

- mc 4.6.1
- samba-essential 3.0.20 (minimal Samba server)
- fluxbox 1.0rc
- fbreader 0.7.3d
- icecast 2.2.0
- debianutils 2.16.1
- sword 1.5.8
- nano 1.3.12
- wireless-tools 29pre10 (will be needed for 2.6.17+ kernels)
- dosbox 0.65 (Thx goes to raduga)
- jamvm 1.4.2
- classpath 0.20
- mplayer 1.0pre8
- zip 2.32
- groff 1.19.2 (should fix problems with man pages)
- links-x11 2.1pre22
About other stuff which was requested in last weeks - I will look at it but rather not before end on July - going to vacations.
-
tinymail will not be included as it needs newer dbus that OZ 3.5.4x use and upgrading dbus will require many rebuilds.
usb-audio is enabled in 3.5.4.1 kernel - we do not add anything other without reason. Spending lot of time on building kernel modules is not something which we like to do often.

Thanks for that, i am aware of how tricky kerenl modules can be (when they dont compile and crash the build process)

Hrw:
I too would like to use xmms in OZ/GPE however I see it is only in the Opie feed . I enabled the Opie feed and installed it but wasn't successful as you were last month (see bug [a href=\"http://bugs.openembedded.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1164]http://bugs.openembedded.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1164 ). What's the reason it's in the Opie feed & not in base if it will suposedly work in both?
Thanks,
Jerry
**EDIT**
OK, after some digging around I found the x11 version of xmms in the 3.5.4/upgrade feed. It looks like some of the upgrades Hrw is doing are placed in there. My mistake was to assume that 3.5.4.X upgrades would be placed in the 3.5.4.1 feeds. Putting that feed in my ipkg.conf resulted in several other apps being upgraded too

I know you hate fiddleing withthe kernel however fbsplash (http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_fbsplash) could be nice for having a bitmap on each VT in the background.
im not sure what you use for your current splash stuff if it is this or somthing diffrent but if it isnt this then it may come in handy
-
I hope this request qualifies in this upgrades thread.
I would like an already upgraded program (cups) upgraded one more step. The current edition in the upgrades feed is cups_1.1.23-r0 but in the "Angstrom" section there is a cups_1.1.23-r1 (but this won't run on my OZ 3.5.4.1 because of older libraries).
I can't get the r0 edition to work with the internet configuration (localhost:631) and I don't think it is something I am doing wrong. If you could upgrade the package to r1, I believe Koen said it had the internet configuration protocol (localhost:631).
If it is just something I am doing wrong with r0 please let me know.

Could you please add Irssi 0.8.10 from the .dev branch? I have built it and it works.
Thanks

Ok i know you hate adding things to the kernel but i tried to mount a dvd form my z and had a couple of complaints about the udf file system
also is mplayer updated with the iwmmxt patches? and would it be posible to compile it with libdvdread support
i should really get OE up and running

Yes, but that doesn't work with softfpa, since the instructions overlap. It does work with EABI

The 'x11' version is a regular x11, it's only called 'x11' because it links to xlibs, and to distinguish it from that evil qte hack.
-
if you are impling that it will run under any X11 enviroment then i still have a problem (i dont run a window manager) hence the need for a FB target

It should behave like a normal sdl and fall back to framebuffer if no X is present. If it doesn't, it's a bug.

Couple of requests for inclusion into OZ please

http://jdolan.dyndns.org/jaydolan/pymp.html (http://jdolan.dyndns.org/jaydolan/pymp.html)
The only way I have been able to play oggs under OZ is with mplayer so now I need a GUI to manage mplayer playlists with and this was the best GTK one I could find.
dillo 0.8.6
Yes yes, its a GTK 1.x app I know but if we're going to have xmms in the feed then we should definately have dillo too as it is the best open source, light-weight GTK browser out there. When gpe-minibrowser is good enough to handle Yahoo! mail then we can ditch this I suppose.
Thanks!

pymp just needs python, I thought. did you try install python then running pymp ?

Hmm, I can't see a python package in the OZ feeds, but there is one called python-pyethem ? Won't I also need the pygtk libs?
xmms for OZ has apparently been fixed so we should have a music player under OZ soon!
Have you got pymp to run under OZ adf?

My SL5500 using the OZ/Opie stable (Not 3.5.4.2.rcX) has Mplayer on SD, plus the libs for it. However, every time I run mplayer I get a responce:
root@collie:~# mplayer
mplayer: error while loading shared libraries: libmad.so.0: cannot enable executable stack as shared object requires: Error 14
root@collie:~#
However, since this is mplayer 1.0pre8, and there's support for not using the exec stacks, all you need to do is pass a switch to ./configure. It's already patched.

I will probably stop OZ/OE work for some time - have to fix my home machine and this need two things: time and money.
Memtest86 passed so it is not memory, badblocks and S.M.A.R.T. tests passed so it is not hdd. CPU (AthlonXP 1.8GHz) has 45-60°C so it is not this. I have to find replacement PSU for this PC and test does it help. If this will not help then I will be out of ideas.
Until I resolve those problems I will not work on OZ as I do not like to have to use c760 as SSH terminal.

if you want to build it natively, then the first thing it does is build qmake, followed by moc and then the qt-mt shared or static library. if you then further compile the tools, it will first compile uic and the rest of the tools. you probbaly want to compile designer, linguistics and assistant.

i re-built the kismet package myself using the org.openembedded.oz354x branch (but had to add a dependency to ncurses to get it built...) and it works perfectly (since not being linked to two c++ libs).
