One thing I really miss in GPE, even though it is not really a very "serious" request, are games.
in the standard QT environment, as well as in embedded Debian or PdaXrom, there are many good games I would really like to see natively under GPE.
In a very personal ranking I would really like to see:
1) Exult (It is both in QTE version and in Pocketdebian)
2) Crimson Skies
3) Battle for Wesnoth
4) MAME (It works very well, at least for the 1970' and 80' games on my 150MHZ nokia 7710!!!)
I am sure this list is far from complete but would be very nice
I would really appreciate if at least an attempt could be done for some of them!
Thanks a lot anyway for the great effort put in OZ!

Hi,
I've compiled Exult 1.4.x (cvs version) for GPE, but I didn't have the chance to test it... I'll let you know when I'll do some basic testing. Additionally I've built Pentagram (Ultima 8) engine but at the moment it's not really usable: bad performance and poor user control...
Thx.

Hi,
That's great news, especially because the 1.4 branch adds the notetaking functions, which is quite useful in playing an RPG on an Handheld!
And the stock rom only has 1.2 working, thanks to artaxerses from the exult team!

Cool!
I don't have much free time but I wouldn't mind playing a game like Exult once and a while.

hey,
what about playing doom or zak mac kracken on your zaurus ?
(there's prboom and scummvm...)
ain't that nothing ;-) ?

Also, Ur-Quan Masters has a package for OZ (possibly works in Opie/GPE/console)
though its only v 0.3 (needs updating).
Judging from the performance of UQM 0.5 on pdaXrom, its probably fantastic.
UQM is "freed software" port of Star Control II (strategy, exploration, combat)

Koen, could you attach the build-opts.sh file required to build this recipe, this might help me finding out how to compile other apps (I am stuck with Liferea rss reader...)?
Thanks.

Did you use OpenEmbedded to compile Exult? The person who originally ported Exult to the Sharp ROM (Artaxerxes) is now looking to port Exult to OpenZaurus. It would be cool to help him use OpenEmbedded to compile it, and maybe it could eventually be added to the 3.5.4.x feed. If you had a .bb file he could use, that would be great!

I have no build-opts.sh?

I took a look at the build-opts.sh in the .dev feed for uqm and it was the same as the one in the .oz354x feed. Everything in org.openembedded.dev/packages/uqm looked the same except for one new file: uqm_0.5.0.bb.
As a test, I tried copying uqm_0.5.0.bb from the .dev feed into my org.openembedded.oz354x tree and doing a "bitbake uqm". It compiled all of the dependencies such as libogg, libvorbis, libsdl-net, etc. but then when it tried compiling uqm-0.5.0, it complained about not being able to find SDL:
'echo -n' capable echo found.
Sed stream editor found.
tr found.
Make found.
GNU C compiler found.
Little-endian machine detected.
Simple DirectMedia Layer not found.
Is it "legal" to copy over the .bb file or am I missing something else?

The two things that keep me going back to cacko from OZ the lack of a good video front end like kino2 and are not being abe to get a proper chess game running, I have tried to get FLTK chess going without much sucess, so a working chess game for 3100 with OZ and GPE would get me converted full time!
A 6 month old and a 2 year old mean that watching movies just doesn't happen any more, but chess is a priority as you can put it down and come back later.

Does the OZ 3.5.4.1 SDL lib support 320x240 console mode operation like the SDL under pdaXrom? Using that I was able to get around 12/13 fps under 16-bit arcade games (like Golden Axe etc.) under MAME on an overclocked c3000.
I would be fantastic if somebody ported GP2X MAME to the Z- you run 16 bit arcade games full speed with sound, including Neo-Geo games like Metal Slug and Samurai Shodown on it and the GP2X only has a 200Mhz ARM processor.

I took a closer look at the uqm source code and the differences between 0.3 and 0.5. It looks like build/unix/config_proginfo in 0.3 has been split into two files in 0.5, config_proginfo_build and config_proginfo_host. So the build-oe.patch file needs to be modified. But I tried doing this and got an error message that uqm 0.5 requires libSDL-1.2.8 and above. The UQM home page verifies this and also says that libsdl-image 1.2.4 is required, but the latest versions of libsdl and libsdl-image in the org.openembedded.dev branch are 1.2.7-r7 and 1.2.3-r0. So it looks like 0.5 won't compile on OZ until these libraries are upgraded.

Ehm, http://www.openembedded.org/filebrowser/or...packages/libsdl (http://www.openembedded.org/filebrowser/org.openembedded.dev/packages/libsdl) lists a libsdl 1.2.9 that has been there for at least 5 weeks.

Sorry, I was looking at libsdl-qpe. I should have made that clear.
