Title: Package Manager Crashes Every Install
Post by: ShiroiKuma on May 15, 2006, 12:12:39 pm
I thought I messed something up and that's why I did it, so I reinstalled, but still the same.

I have a 3200 and if I try to install something via the Package Manager GUI it crashes, reports a SIGSEGV.

I can install from the command line no prob. But can't use the Package Manager.

Any hints as to what might be wrong, or how I can debug this?

Opies package manager has a bug where it crashes when installing more than two or three packages at the same time. It is known for quite some time but no-one bothered to fix it, yet.

Is there any workround for this, then?   I cna use ipkg from the konsole, but that's not so convenient!   Tried uninstall/install with no joy....

It does get old.  when switched back to an X environment from cacko I thought hard about going back to gpe...the unspeakable, unfortunate behaviour of the package manager convinced me that flashing to gpe was just too much work.
It has been like this since the 1st gpe release, too.

My personal experience is with the veyr annoying one in gpe.  I've heard similar comments re opie, but haven't really messed with opie much, and so couldn't say from experience.

The problem is that the devs tend to use the command line to install things, and therefore aren't all that bothered to fix the GUI package managers which they won't use (as there are more exciting/interesting things to hack at).

I know this is not ideal and that this issue annoys a lot of people.

Anyone out there who'd like to cut their teeth on one or both of these package manager apps? Might be an interesting way to start coding...

The alternative is the bounty system, or just a dev who is really, really bored

Try to use AQPKG, it's working fine in most cases

That's the package manager I've been trying to use and which segfaults every time.  As I said, reinstalling makes no difference - there has to be a file it's written somewhere which is killing it.

That doesn't refer to AQPkg (random capitalisation) afaik.

Not really, I believe we are talking about OPIE Package Manager, but those bugs are mostly in GPE manager.
Try to launch it from the console and catch an output. Maybe that will give you ideas about problem.

I had this problem on the latest Hentges.
Aqpkg would work precisely once and then sigsegv out on every subsequent attempt at use.
I found that the package was changing the ipkg.conf file and after I went into the file and cleaned it up, it now works fine every time.
