Title: Getting the right Wireless card
Post by: Anonymous on September 12, 2003, 07:46:43 pm
I have the Zaurus 5500 with the latest BIOS (3.1).  I have the Netgear Compact Flassh 802.11b Wireless (MA701).  I\'ve tried setting up my wireless connection at home (without encryption).  It appears to try and work, but then ends up not to, and without much indication of what is wrong.

Basically, will this card work, or do I need a specific card?

Thanks,

Hans

I\'ve seen quite a few posts about this card on zaurus.com/dev/board. http://www.zaurus.com/dev/board/index.php?...c=5180&hl=ma701 (http://www.zaurus.com/dev/board/index.php?showtopic=5180&hl=ma701) It seems as if it\'s a bit of a challenge with the new rom.

I also am interested in choosing the right wireless card. I have a 5500 with the Sharp ROM 3.10 and I'm not looking for the cheapest wireless card but the one that works best ie has great range, ease of use etc.

Anyone have a suggestion?

I use this one on my 5600:

http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP....ories_clearance (http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start;sid=JSsLevaQSwYLKLeCX3QBcbmc-Le5C0UKvk8=?ProductSKU=PEGAWL100%2fR&Dept=hp&CategoryName=hid_hp_accessories_clearance)

Its WL100 which is an Intel chip I believe.  Works well with my Belkin router.  I have used it all over the house in my pda without any issues.  I had to do a little searching and editting of files to get it to work but once you have it set up it works well.  I have encryption turned on without any issues.

Although it hasn't gotten the best reviews I'm going to try the Netgear MA701 as a friend of mine has one he doesn't need.

Next question is, uh, how to I go about using it? I'm a newbie to both Linux and the Z so I'm not sure what to do next.

I assume I need some sort of driver for the card and then I would need to adjust some settings.

FYI my desktop machine is a Win2k box and I have a 5500 with the Sharp 3.10 ROM.

Can anyone point in the right direction with instructions written very plainly for this newbie?

Thanks in advance.
