I had a few months ago a U70 which was nice, but was lacking a keyboard. This model solves this problem, and I would have definitively bought it if the battery was not only 3h30! (I know there is an extended battery, but I also know how bulk it will be just as it was on the U70).
Common Sony, I have just ordered a Panasonic Subnotebook which delivers 12h battery lifetime!
So yes it seems nice, but no it will not replace my Zaurus. Note also that the formfactor is also quite different from the Zaurus (550g, size, ...).

Pricey and will probably have poor battery life. But what a beautiful device. It does have the things I would love in a next generation Zaurus. Very nice!

$1800? No, thanks.
-albertr
-
for that kind of money, I could afford a ultraportable Laptop.
$1800 is an obscene amount of money for running Windows XP on a small footprint device.
I cant believe that adding Bluetooth, Wifi, a solo core chip (if not some other equally performing one), more RAM, ROM etc will make the Zaurus double expensive than what it is now.
(and we dont need Windows XP and its license costs to be added unessecarily)
So how come these device mfrs make these ultraportables so expensive just to provide the capacity to run a full-blown XP on it.
gr8ful, where di you find that it runs Linux too ?

[a href=\"http://www.geekstuff4u.com]http://www.geekstuff4u.com[/url] pre-sale this Sony and offers Linux as base system. That does not mean that this device will run linux.
In fact I am sure it will, because it's quite like a standard PC, the only problem might be the touchscreen support.
U70 ran linux fine.

2) English XP OEM (+$128.02)
3) French XP OEM (+$128.02)

6) German XP OEM (+$140.83)
7) Italian XP OEM (+$140.83)
8) XP PRO OEM Multilingual (+$217.64)
I assume this means that some version of Linux OS is offered free with the product. I found no other information than this.
This is one pricey unit, but I want one anyway.

This device is very cool. It is not for people having trouble with there bank account every beginning of the month . Would love to see and test one. It should definitively be compared with an OQO instead of a Zaurus, even if it has the same battery life as a SL-700. ;-)
It's the best UPC available out there I guess. It is small enough for most common use. Just not enough for your pocket... put we are not there yet, are we?

It's not really that much bigger than a Z clamshell:
Sony ---> 150.2 x 95 x 32.2 mm
Zaurus -> 124 x 87 x 25
Won't fit the shirt pocket but will the pants pocket. A bit heavy though (520g, 1.23 lbs).

Over half a kilo is a bit much to hang off my belt ... and the pants pocket would get pretty stuffed with that, I can just see big bruises on these 60-year-old thighs.

The OQO is around 420g and I find it damn heavy to hold with just one hand for a longer period. Now 520g would be like holding a heavy brick. I always thought the OQO sucked because it was heavier than the Z.
-
Pure surmising on my part, but I wonder if this might provide Sharp with the necessary spur to produce the Zaurus that we all wish for.
They could probably afford to sell it for a darn sight less than the Sony.
Just found this cool Japanese interactive page showing GPS capability and much more. I can only go by the pics though, those who who ead Japanese will glean much more.
Also check the links under V Vision.

It is a backpacker for sure and I read that it had a 5 second start time. I assume that it's from a suspend.
This is not a zaurus replacement because it is not instant on or small and light. Would it be able to wake-up and remind you of your next meeting? I guess with some tweaking it might.
Might this take away some zaurus users? You bet. There are a lot less compromises on the operating system and hardware, but it is a much easier to carry than a even and ultra portable laptop. I wonder what heat issues that might arise.
-
Im definatly intrested in how this will shape up, i like it but not the price or the processor (cant stand x86)
but because of the usb on my Z i dont think i will be changing anytime soon

No CF, No USB OTG, and PocketPC.
We're probably better just getting the universal perfect for now.
I hate x86 too Blitz.
My desk currently contains 3 Acorn ARM, one SGI MIPS, one Sun UltraSparc, one Amiga 68k, a Duron 850 and a P4 1.9
it's a shame they don't make UltraSparc TabletPC's. . . I LIKE that architecture!

from the faq:
http://www.geekstuff4u.com/faq.php (http://www.geekstuff4u.com/faq.php)
Q: What is the LINUX PACK/OS FREE offer?
A: The LINUX PACK offer is dedicated to all clients willing to buy a PC from Japan without an operating system pre-installed? We also include in this package 3 CD's of the Linux Mandrake Free edition software in order to help promote the use of LINUX around the world? Clients are of course free to install any OS they desire on their PC's, including LEGALLY purchased versions of Windows 98/2000/XP? All necessary drivers will also be included on a separate CD or PC partition if clients wish to install Microsoft XP OS at a later date.
Please be aware however, that GeekStuff4u DOES NOT supports the installation of LINUX or any other OS that clients install on their PC's? We also CANNOT GUARANTEE that ALL PC's will run as smoothly running with a LINUX OS installed? Also, we CANNOT GUARANTEE that all functions of the PC will FULLY WORK with an OS other than the one we usually ship with your PC? GeekStuff4U ONLY guarantees and has a warranty for the hardware.
ie this doesn't mean that it runs linux.

that looks REALLY nice... zaurus with more memory and built-in wireless. WiBro = wireless broadband, doesn't say exactly what (3G? Wimax?)
-
Clicking on the WiBro link takes you to a page that describes WiBro as "Mobile WiMAX and 4G".
-
Nothing for the brits then. We're still on W-CDMA, aren't we?
-
Wow, it's amazing how much these new devices look like either a Zaurus, OQO, or PSP
-
That's because the designs are all ripped off. I mean look at the IBM PS-2. . One person built a computer NOT shaped like a keyboard, so everyone else did!
-
I will probably get one....even if I have-to deal with windoz, then again, oh sashz where are you.....

Just noticed a review of new Sony handheld...

Has anyone confirmed that linux can be loaded on it????
-
Without instanton, Zaurus still win handsdown.
-
Actually, the six seconds resume-from-suspend time is quite impressive. I wonder, is the suspend/resume time affected by the OS, hardware, or both? Would a "lite" version of Linux be able to quicken those times even more?
I am seriously dissapointed to hear of the keyboard usability issues, though. Fortunately, as with the OQO, the preorder lag time is enough to allow me to come to my senses and cancel the order before my bank account suffers another large blow
-
As someone who works at fixing/keeping-the-pile-of-crap-running windows xp on a daily basis on (to date) thousands of different spec machines. the thought of it in a device as small and as pda aimed as this is both horrific and clever at the same time.
Since owning a z (few years now) and using my 860 every single day, usually for hours on end (especially if I've got some new books from baen :-) I have to say the most trouble I've had is the cf card not being recognised as a drive (happened once) which was sorted on a reboot.
Windows xp on the other hand has a real penchant for committing suicide between shutdown and startup. Frequently essential system files are corrupted which entails a complete reinstall.
On a system without a built in cdrom - this becomes a major pain. And on a system that's touted as being pda-portable it's positively crazy to use such an unstable os.
Win98se on something like this would be superb, as it pretty much never truly dies.
But xp - nope I'll stay with my zaurus, there's nothing I want to do portably that it won't do. And clamshell with a twist has to be the way to go on an ultra portable.
This slide out keyboard crap just gives you a bad shape for typing/reading with it on a flat surface. I never have my z flat, even if holding it to read clamshell wide, it's still always bent at the hinge.
Plus the fact that you've got a permantly exposed touch screen - truly bad idea.
Sony have actually produced an ultra compact digital camera with a 3 inch touch screen on the back. thereby ensuring instantly that you can't stick it in your pocket and have to have a carry case.
touch screen devices should always have either a built in cover or be clamshell :-)
But lots of people think winxp is good so this gadget will be bought.
I'd like one for the sheer cool factor, but as a serious tool - it's hopeless.
-
Given enough time, linux will load on damn near anything. Though it is a Sony. It's hard enough finding some drivers for their stuff for windows.
-
I think the design is a piece of crap!
it has a sticking antena and there is no screen cover.
and support for holding the device while typing is almost none existant!

it looks huge! and the antenna is definately pathetic. looks like it has to be placed on a table to be used. i hope it doesnt get as hot as the oqo, but that currently is an advantage in this damn cold weather. at least it keeps my hands warm

When I went to LaOX I compared the UX50 to my c3000. In terms of width, the zaurus and the UX50 are about the same. The UX is about half an inch to an inch longer than the c3000. I know that there have been reports of the UX not being very pocketable but I think that if you have been pocketing your zaurus the UX should be no problem. I wouldn't feel comfortable sticking a UX in my pocket though because the screen is facing outwards =p. As for the heat. Although I didn't play with the unit for very long it was not hot at all.
I am actually thinking of picking one of these things up tomorrow...maybe. They are actually quite reasonable if you are in Tokyo for vacation =). (159000 yen-tax)/114 (yen/dollar).

If you do get one please let us know. I would love to see a full comparison of the UX50 to your C3000. The UX50 is definitely an intriguing device, but I struggle at paying that much for it.

- I wouldn't take one of these Sony things for hundred dollars, much less eighteen hundred (or 1400-ish if i happen to be in japan already). Definitely designed for that crowd with significantly more money than sense. Even if it ran Linux, the usablity looks right about nil. It's got a serious Rube Goldberg look to it, that's for sure. Unusual for the Sony hardware I usually see.
- And it's got Memory Stick. I wish Sony would get off their high horse and follow standard spec for a change. They tend to design better hardware, imho, then they put all of their proprietary bull into it. I wouldn't touch MS with a hundred-foot pole; over-priced niche item that should go the way of the dinosaur.
- No thanks. If I got one for free I'd sell it and get a DLP projector. (wolfish grin) My old LCD is getting long in the tooth and could stand a res improvement.
-
for the price I could buy another zaurus, some accessories, build a decent workstation/gamebox, buy a ps2 and have dinner out. Or I could build a pretty nice lumenlab projector and a pretty nice workstation/gamebox/mediabox to attach to it, and keep my 2 current Zs. It seems excessive. What, actually does (that one might want to do with a portable) it do that my Z won't? It what way would it be a better companion on the road, or at work?
-
You can get a good idea as to size and shape from this video
http://jkontherun.blogs.com/jkotr_audio_ed...herun_audi.html (http://jkontherun.blogs.com/jkotr_audio_edition/2006/06/jkontherun_audi.html)
The presentation is a bit drawn out as he takes his time over it but you get to see it in action and being held. The other videos I have seen only focus on the display and o/s.
The big issue for me is whether or not it fits in my cargo pants pocket. The beaty of the Zaurus is that it is with me at all times, whether or not I have a bag.
-
It would seem the newer version UX90 sports a 1.2 Ghz cpu along with a CF card slot and english querty keyboard.
The CF slot definately helps make it more attractive. Aside from the fact that its so expensive, has a crappy intel wireless chipset, and that its from Sony.... Id love one.

Actually there are 3 versions, 2 Japan VGN-UX50, VGN-UX90/S and 1 US VGN-UX180P

I agree with you that having such a device with Windows (98 or XP) can be crazy when you think of recovery. The thing I like about Zaurus and/or PPCs, HPCs and Palms are the fact that its OS is in rom and a hard reset 'restores' it back to factory condition (according to what is in rom). On a Windows device (non Wince), restoring takes just too long, though some system restoration software restores to factory default in 20mins flat via a hidden partition. Granted, its still moot if the hdd goes dead, but that's like saying "What if the ROM in my Akita goes dead?" ...
Dunno what machine you are running on ... but I cannot recall the last time I had a blue screen or essential system files being corrupted. I hibernate my notebook between uses and sometimes leave it on the whole night and it works just fine.
Win98, while being lighter on resources, had poor driver support until 98se, especially for USB devices and still its not as good as USB support on XP.
-
it's a real shame that the Sharp Muramasa Mebius CV50F was both outrageously expensive (both to buy, and for extra memory & batteries), lacked bluetooth, and was discontinued... because it had a v hires screen for its size (better than the lifebook P7120 or P7010 and far better than the Flybook). They're pretty rare too, the only place which has them is Conics, and 2nd hand only!
-
Another review - confirms what most here have been discussing which to me sounds like it's a somewhat interesting device but overall no thanks.

There's a new version of it with flash (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/06/27/sony_umpc_goes_flash/) instead of a hard drive. 1.5s startup as opposed to a 9s startup and ~ 1/5th lighter.
-
Do you realize that this Sony UPC has enough ram to run pdaXrom in ram with a ramdisk like the old Psion Series 5mx pro? What is the battery life of this device if you don't use nor the flash nor the harddrive? Does it support hibernation and fast wake up?
With the same specification but with the Zaurus or HTC universal design it will be a real killer. It's my dream since 1991, after my firstt purchase of a Psion Series 3. At last, I will perhaps see this coming true in a few months or a few years.
Anecdote : A wall life with PDA. I like pda... because the first time a saw an Amstrad CPC, I asked : "Isn't there a portable version running with battery?" and everybody had fun with me. Well
I'm ready for a HTC universal with the Sony specification. Are you listening Sharp? Sony? HTC?
