Haha! Is this a joke? We the c7x0(c860) people are still waiting for beta 4

Well the poor 6000 owners are still on beta 1 and I think the c3000 owners are not even offically supported. I was looking at a 860 on ebay the other day just so I can move up the beta chain

I would prefer to have one more or less stable version ( beta 6-7-8?) developed on one platform, in a relatively short timeframe - and than as soon as that is there, it could be ported to all other Z models...
That would be probably (much) more efficient than releasing all betas on all Z models...
Or am I mistaken?
-
basically it depends on development process, on its very strategies... one could decide to proceed on every platform to avoid development stall and obsolescence, and to reduce porting risks by fragmenting, or concentrate on one platform in order to port only latest and stable solutions on other models. I's a matter of development strategy and method....
ops.. OT
sorry
a good way to avoid crunching my nails waiting for beta4 fix for my poor 860

My solution was to fall back to a known good (for my hardware) version and let the developers develop at their own pace. IMHO the 2.6 kernel still needs some work. I say this not as a kernel developer (I'm not) but after trying the latest GPE and pdax beta 4 in succession. There were things that felt somehow unpolished..unfinished on both. I cn't quite put my finger on it, but both of them had a similar uneven feel to their performance (maybe due largely to the absence of bvdd or equivalent?) Having said that, I have to point out that I think that both systems are on the right track, and that really open 2.6 based sytems are the way to go and will dominate the near future of the Z.

I'm curious, who exactly dictates the answer to this question?
Laze?
Sashz?
A group of people?
My biggest worry with pdaXrom is that if either of the guys Laze/Sashz get knocked down by a bus, what happens to pdaXrom?
-
the code goes into the oe system? community support?
edit: So far we seeem Ok. if they abandon the project, then other solutions will present themselves. Look at it this way-- the manufacturer abandoned development and we are better off than before

The bus driver will have to continue the project.

I hope he writes good drivers then!
*gosh* ... ahem! we should really not joke about this wonderful folks getting knocked down by buses! ...

Well the point that I'm making is...
If, heavens forbid, Laze/Sashz gave up on the project or were involved in a freakish bus related accident, would anyone within the existing pdaXrom community be able or willing to take it over?

I'm sure there are folks out there that could, and would be able to continue the
effort, but in my opinion, it would require handy access to the various hardware
models, in order to be able to produce a stable OS for all the models.
I'm sort of getting the feeling that interest and support for my SL-6000 is fading
in favor of the newer clamshells. I am running RC12 which has been very stable,
and today I plan to check out the SL-5500 version again.

I dunno... beta1 is very nearly the same as beta3. All the effort is going into 2.6 based beta4 imho. Beta4 is still really beta, so I'd expect the pdaX guys to concentrate on getting it polished before we can expect decent ports of it. Also, 2.6 is just beginning to emerge for the 6000. I bet there will be nice 2.6 based choices available for the 6k by the end of the summer.

Just bringing this thread back to life...
I'm looking forward to a new release... I'd rather see something "non-beta"... but to please the community and keep releases just about quarterly you have to release a semi-polished product... But... I'm mainly looking to a clean release... with Zumi working on the "Settings" apps and rebuilding them... that should be a big help by itself...
Just keep up the good work... I believe with the new plan of action with opening up the code and giving the community a chance to help out... will be a big thing...
One suggestion RELEASE A BOOTSTRAP!!... Shell only... and any other required apps (iwtools, tar, gunzip, etc....)
