I came across mention of the psion netbook again, and I wondered whether OESFers had encountered it:

it got rave reviews about its ergonomics, but was quite expensive - still is
I looked again at it because there's been quite a lot of progress running linux:

From a Zaurus to a Netbook, me thinks most Zaurus users would find it too bulky. A sigmarion III would be a good upgrade size for Zaurus, though it (like the Netbook) cannot "transform" into tablet mode, so may be deemed poorer in terms of usability.

I don't see this having any appeal at all. Go to conics.net and you can get any of several used ultraportable laptops that are much faster, have much more storage, and are about the same size and weight, some a little smaller. Most of them can run regular linux distributions well. And they are cheaper. The somewhat longer battery life seems to be about the only comparison this gadget wins. Am I missing something here? Why would anyone use it except perhaps in some dedicated corporate configuration?

I'm still waiting for the new Clio to come out. That had the best of both worlds in my opinion.

The netbook pro does have its upside in terms of batt life and instanton compared to a subnotebook, though batt life can be pretty good with some of the newer subnotes and to be honest, the netbook is not cheap ~$1k+.
The CLIO ... oh don't even get me started ... when I was fiddling with HandheldPCs ... I was all hopeful for the CLIO NXT to be ze One ... but they just disappeared under the radar altogether ... only with the recent news (after 1 whole year) that they are trialling it in some school. Couple of folks who preordered were sorely disappointed, to say the least. grrr

When these beasts first came out they really didn't have any competition. It's got long battery life (8hrs), largish screen, decent keyboard, instant on and incredibly stable OS (the original Epoc version that is, not the current machines which use wince (yuck!)).

Nice thing about the older Epoc netBook is that there is hardly any development on it now. Seriously, the epoc OS is indeed solid as a rock, and it has all the business apps I need, and as there no new ROMS I can get on and actually use it. Trouble with my Z is that I am forever tweaking something, breaking things, reinstalling things... its fun, but I can't let my business depend on it.
One thing both the Z and the trusty old netBook have in common is the amount of free software. Compared with Windows Mobile, or even my Epoc decended 'Symbian' mobile phone that is. Its nice that I am not having to spend any more money on them.
Oh, the old Epoc netBook has a 640x480 screen too. But as it is so much bigger physically, it is easier to read especially when doing long word processing and spreadsheets. The keyboard is very easy on the fingers too. Finally, even though my netBook is one of the older machines its original battery still outstrips any portable I own.
The one thing I have against the netBook is that both the main web browsers available for it are showing their age and having increasing difficulties with some websites.

The Clio NXT's delay was in no way Data Evolution's fault. I can let you know about the product's progress next time I hear from their CEO.
