Title: Angstrom Installation
Post by: Sy Ali on June 17, 2006, 09:03:19 am
This probably isn't the right place to put this thread, but there isn't an "other" category.

I was going to try installing the 2006-04-28 preview, but I cannot find an initrd.bin  ..  the installation instructions mention it.

rename the .img file to initrd.bin

There are four .img files to use.  I tried Angstrom-gpe-image-test-20060428-akita.rootfs.img but it results in:

Quote
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(254,1)

I'll try Angstrom-e-image-core-test-20060428-akita.rootfs.img

[edit]

That didn't work either.  I'm not sure what's going on.

I've not tried but my guess is this:

*Same file except in tar bz format/package?
Angstrom-bootstrap-image-test-20060428-akita.rootfs.tar.bz2
Angstrom-e-image-core-test-20060428-akita.rootfs.tar.bz2
Angstrom-gpe-image-test-20060428-akita.rootfs.tar.bz2
Angstrom-opie-image-test-20060429-akita.rootfs.tar.bz2

*Rename *one* of following to initrd.bin
Angstrom-bootstrap-image-test-20060428-akita.rootfs.img
Angstrom-e-image-core-test-20060428-akita.rootfs.img
Angstrom-gpe-image-test-20060428-akita.rootfs.img
Angstrom-opie-image-test-20060429-akita.rootfs.img

*no idea
modules-2.6.16-akita.tgz

updater.sh.akita ======> updater.sh
zImage-2.6.16-akita-20060427232137.bin  ==> zImage.bin

I was using these three files:

zImage.bin
updater.sh
initrd.bin (renamed from Angstrom-e-image-core-test-20060428-akita.rootfs.img)

I assume that this package is a little too alpha for me just now.  =)

e-image is enlightenment gui or something right?

How about gpe or opie?

The gpe file was the first one I tried.  It didn't work.

GPE is GPE (gpe.handhelds.org)
Opie is Opie (opie.handhelds.org)
e is Enlightenment (no idea where off the top of my head)

modules-2.6.16-akita.tgz contains kernel modules, as there's no feed for this atm iirc.

Did you check the md5sums for all the files to make sure nothing was corrupted?

I'd love to.  Where can I get the md5sums?  =)

Good point. I've just asked someone to sort this out.

I would like to see your instructions when you have it running.

The instructions will be largely the same as for the OpenZaurus installation (as both use bitbake and the openembedded metadata to produce the files).

I'm having the same problem trying to install Angstrom.  Kernel panic
I renamed everything correctly and got it from the akita folder under /tmp/Angstrom on the ewi mirror.  Has this problem been solved?

It took me some time to find them, but apparently the images have been updated.   Therein, I see a very recent build for the akita.

I'll check it out soon.  The installation instructions remain unchanged, so it looks like the images I was using before were bad.

I installed Angstrom successfully on my C1000:

Code: [Select]
mv zImage-2.6.17-akita-20060813164359.bin zImage.bin
mv updater.sh.akita updater.sh
mv Angstrom-gpe-image-test-20060813-akita.rootfs.img initrd.bin

*  I performed a complete system restore from my systc100.dbk file, to ensure that my home folder was wiped and the partitioning was reset.
* Perform a flash update. (hold OK)  - http://jrandomhacker.info/Sharp_Zaurus_SL-C1000/Flash_update (http://jrandomhacker.info/Sharp_Zaurus_SL-C1000/Flash_update)

The result is that I get a lot of "out of memory" errors while it boots up.. it takes forever.  I briefly see a login prompt and then I get a black screen.

Presumably I have either used the wrong initrd.bin file, or maybe I have a partitioning issue.

(edit)

Using Angstrom-bootstrap-image-test-20060813-akita.rootfs.img will get me to a basic shell, for which I don't know the user or password.  So I'm on the right track.. I don't know what to do from here though.  The files aren't named intuitively, and the install instructions only vaguely hint at file renaming.

Should I try the summary .img files?  =/
