Title: Xfce4 Won't Load
Post by: boardboyd on June 20, 2006, 12:15:00 pm
I've checked the forums, and followed the numerous guides on how to install XFCE4.
Xfce4 starts up only once, and that's the first time after a clean install of pdaXrom beta3 and xfce4-4.2.2, but when I exit it (saved the session of course) and try to start Xfce4 again I get the following error:

Quote
> startxfce4
Loading /etc/sysconfig/keyboard/kernel.map

Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'
XIO:  fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

I've looked for the 'fixed' font and can't find it in anywhere on my Z (c3100) but I can't understand why it would load XFCE4 the first time.

Oh yeah and Matchbox works without a problem.

Thanks

What exactly did you install ?

Have you tried to install the xlibs package you can find in one of my lists ? I get this error after installing that one. It can be solved by removing the fonts section from the startxfce4-script you can find in /usr/local/bin.
The section to remove starts with
Code: [Select]
FONTS_PATH=""and end at
Code: [Select]
           defaultserverargs=.......
fi

BTW : there is an experimental xfce4 4.4beta1 over here : [a href=\"http://users.telenet.be/zaurususer/ipkgs/experimental/]http://users.telenet.be/zaurususer/ipkgs/experimental/[/url]

Install all (Terminal, orage and mousepad are optional) ipks over there, copy xinitrc.xfce to your home dir, copy startxfce4 to /usr/bin
(first remove xfce4.2.2)
Terminal needs vte (main feed)

Have fun,
Chero.

Well I tried your first part Chero, where I edit the startxfce4 script and that gave me a different error along the lines that I was missing libxfce4mcs-client.so.3

So I reformated my microdrive, and reinstalled pdaxrom after d/l all your ipkls from your experimental feed and tried them and everything worked right off the bat.
Thanks.

sounds like some things were not installed to "/', xfce doesn't like this, libs seem to get broken that way.

Yeah I was trying to install xfce to a microdrive partition, but it's starting up without a problem now.

I do have another question/problem, I have panelmenu and menu-pdx installed but whenever I tap on the "start" (for lack of better words) button on my panel, nothing happens.  Where is your default menu.xml file stored so I can see if I can specify it.

did you replace the xinitrc.xfce4 with the one in Chero's feed?  it sounds like xfce4 is starting up, the startup has a white background with a rat in the middle that fades in and out.

check your home dir : in .config and .cache there could be some settings from the previous version that aren't possible in the new one. Try removing everything related to xfce over there.

I compiled it on a C3100, maybe it's not fully compatible with CXX0 devices. Has anyone got it running on a CXX0 ?

If you are using the experimental (4.3.90.1) packages, it won't work. It's likely you broke the default-menu by installing the "panel-menu-plugin". The panel has been completely recoded for the 4.4 release and the plugins have to be updated as well. I compiled the ones I could find (they are also in the experimental dir)

Try this : from a terminal window do
Code: [Select]
# xfdesktop -menu
That should show a menu on the screen somewhere. Any errors ?

If you don't get a menu, try reinstalling xfdesktop.

NOTE : don't edit the text-string from the default-menu-plugin, you can choose to show or hide it, but you shouldn't change it (it does strange things then - it's a known (old) xfce related bug).

The menu isn't really stored. It's build using .desktop files and temp. stored in your home-dir (~/.cache/xfce4/desktop/menu...........)

The menu of the plugin you mention (but is likely unusable with the 4.3.90.1 packages) is stored in ~/.config (I guess).

Reinstalling xfdesktop and libexo seemed to do the trick.

I thought calling the mouse a rat might get someone going  I'm known to be a poop disturber at times

I'll put a link from the xfce4 forums to this thread,
you may need a new login name in a few days ...

BTW : you're not the first who called this lovely mouse a rat, I recall reading about "a screen with a dead rat"

experimental packages aren't sl-c860 beta1 compatible, and older packages seem not well packaged (some install in /usr/, come other in /usr/local)

I desperately need the latesta xfce4 on my sl-c860

Chero, can you help me(us)?

thanks

I GOT IT TO WORK!...
but... I cant use the menu editor....

I will not lauch... all the others work fine...
*except* for Session and Startup Settings...

I dont need to use it... but it resized all the font and wipes the XFCE menu from the task bar...

I have to CTRL+ALT+BKSP to get out and start XFCE again and add it back to the menu...

Isn't there a beta 3 for CXX0 in the contrib part of the pdaXrom -site ? Or isn't it stable enough ?

I believe it is mirrored [a href=\"http://zaurus.spy.org/feeds/cacko/pdaXrom/1.1.0/beta3/]over here[/url]

The main difference (i think) is the change of libiconv to glibc-iconv. That's why the packages may not be compatible.

xfce4 4.4 is still in beta stage, maybe it's not so bad to stick with 4.2.2 for now

session and startup settings come with xfce4-session, which is not the 4.3.90.1 release (but a snapshot i downloaded a few days before the release. The release had a major bug, which caused xfce to crash multiple times. That's why i use the older package and the reason why it's settings don't work. Maybe it's time to upgrade that one.

Yep.

The versions 4.2.x and 4.4.x (starting from 4.3.90.1) are not compatible.
The panel has been recoded, the old plugins have to be upgraded, "xfcalender" is now called "orage" and has alarm capabilities, iconbox doesn't exist any longer, xfdesktop can hold icons, thunar is the new filemanager, .... (check xfce diary for more news)

I compiled the plugins I was able to find, if you find more that should be 4.4 compatible, just shout.

Have fun,
Chero.

beta3 isn't stable at all on sl-c860, so I'd like a beta1-compatible xfce build. I would use 4.2 version if I could find a precise and coherent set of packages. Actually the 4.4 folder id is clear, while 4.2 set of packages seems confusing.

hi,

new snapshots have been released. I'll try to compile them compatible to beta 1.
Beta 3 users will have to install libiconv from the beta 1 feed.

Just give me some time to finish it.

Hi,

there are plans to release xfce 4.4 beta2 next weekend, I think I'd better wait for that before releasing some "half-done" packages for pdaX, while the next beta is so close.

Have fun,
Chero.
