Hello all!
After Hundreds of CVS and OE commits, countless hours of hacking, tuning and tweaking,
after digging through 18Gb of source code compiled into 2Gb of binary data for two machines in
three configurations,
I can now proudly present the first stable Hentges ROM Release after 13 month.
Grab it while it's hot (http://www.hentges.net/misc/openzaurus/oz3.5.4.1-opie1.2.1.shtml)
Happy flashing
-
Now I need to finish building feeds for OpenZaurus 3.5.4.1 to get it released...
-
*ouch* *ouch* ... its hot! ... ... grabbing it now ...
-
Just flashed it and booted up. Everything is 5-by-5.
btw, is it norm that the Do-You-Want-to-Scan-DocTab dialog almost always appear out of size on OPIE on first boot?
I always have to remove all media, including SD (even though I installed cardfs) to get into the system. Subsequent boots will show the dialog in the right size. I recall this behaviour back in 3.5.3. ... Am I missing something?

Nope, this years-old bug in Opie has still not been fixed I'm afraid.

Snappy, what do you do to get out of the wonderful De-You.... screen? Reboot/reset with the cards out or what?

Only happens on QVGA devices (ie: Collie / Poodle)

Collie....I figured it out. It seems to have stuffed all of the applications into RAM which has resulted in an unstable system. Oh well, at least I use Opie.

Chris, I make sure everything is installed, oz/opie + cardfs ... #1 so I get the first boot with the size-me-up-dialog ( ) ....
#2 I just do a battery switch flip to power off and on.
#3 Remove SD and CF
#4 Pressed Cancel (a few times just in case) to power up.
#5 Got into opie screen calibrate page. Calibrate
#6 Got into OPIE with tabs but not all, since SD with cardfs is not inserted.
#7 Reboot or shutdown
#8 Insert SD before kernel finish loading, so that SD is loaded and cardfs is used
#8.5 The DocTab dialog pops up ... this time in right size. I clear everything.
#9 OZ boots and OPIE loads up with full hentges rom apps and tabs.
Its on my collie. Gonna try out gpe in awhile ... though unless I can get murphytalk running on opie or some form of chinese input in gpe, my Akita stays on Cacko1.23.

I'm taking my first steps out of the Sharp Rom (got my colie a month ago and a CF just on Twesday). I just installed Hentges Rom with GPE. I still haven't desideded on which distribution to stay.
There are a couple of things I don yet understand:
*Which is the diference betwenn the Hentges Rom and the plain OZ Rom?
*I get a kernell version mismach warning while booting. I got my kernel from the OZ page (2.4.18-rmk7-pxa3-embedix). Where do I get the correct kernell?
*Are feeds working? Couldn't make them work with my previous flat GPE from the OZ page.
My firs impresion on GPE are very promising, I like it more than OPIE but I would like to try some software on it like firefox and get a good mp3 player on it.
Congratulations to the hole developer comunity!!

The Hentges ROM has several apps configured & pre-installed that perhaps the vanilla OZ ROM doesn't & it might have a few kernel tweaks too, which is why you should get the kernel from the hentges site rather than the OZ site. The Hentges feed should work if you have a working usbnet or wifi card.

ewi, the master mirror of OpenZaurus is currently down and with it all feeds

So far I get less aplications (PIM package manager, text editor, etc) in comparison with OZ one. I noticed the ability to move the root which I apreciate. How do I get more packages? Should I use ipk command?
On the other hand, I don't understand how to patch the kernel. Should I recomplie it?
I've been in [a href=\"http://www.hentges.net/misc/mhkernel.html]http://www.hentges.net/misc/mhkernel.html and it links me to kernel.org!!
I'm a bit lost

If you can dnload the apps to a CF card, then put the CF card into your Z.
Then, once it's automounted do this:
Open up the konsole & type:
cd /media/cf
ipkg -d sd install name_of_file.ipk
& then, once it's finished, type this:
ipkg-link add name_of_file
(without the .ipk extension).

Umm, you should install the correct kernel for your needs. I tend to use the 64-0 kernels so I have complete control.
For example, you could dnload:
[a href=\"http://oz.hentges.net/releases/3.5.4.1/T1/collie/kernel/zImage-collie-64-0-20060620045455.bin]http://oz.hentges.net/releases/3.5.4.1/T1/...60620045455.bin
& then:
http://oz.hentges.net/releases/3.5.4.1/T1/...ollie_T1.tar.gz (http://oz.hentges.net/releases/3.5.4.1/T1/collie/hentges-opie-image-collie_T1.tar.gz)
rename them as per instructions
&, as CoreDump has said, RTFM wrt CardFS howto.
When you've done & read all that, put the renamed files onto yourCF card, rflash, & you'll find *lots* of goodies on your Zaurus.

Someone should just write a script
ipkg -d sd install $1.ipk
ipkg-link add $1

Since I wasn't able to find a nice media player for gpe I descided to give a chance to OPIE but I'm still having some problems. I downloaded /zImage-collie-64-0-20060620045455.bin and I'm still havinga kernell version mismatch while booting.

plus the gnu-tar & updater.sh scripts & obviously, rename the above hentges files according to the flash instructions. Not sure what to suggest if that all doesn't work.

Just curious. Not sure if I should post this here as part of this thread, as a new thread in this forum or a new thread in the GPE forum, so if this isn't right, someone say please.
I'm playing with the GPE variant of this ROM and it's closer to what I've wanted on the Z than most other ROMs so am really keen to give it a fair trial.
I've come across the following problems, issues, which I'm hoping to resolve so I can carry on with this. If anyone can help, I'd so appreciate it!
1) Abiword loads up with purple mixed into the background/ruler bar. Now this isn't a problem, , but it is ugly and I've no clue how to fix it.
2) The keymap isn't quite how I'm used to. I rather like the sticky shift and function keys that the Sharp Rom has. Is there a way to alter the GPE keymap to allow this?
3) I can't find Alt anywhere, which is making application based menu navigation a bit tricky. Anyone know where this is?
4) I have a fat CF, a fat32 CF and a ext2 SD but neither abiword nor gnumeric will write to these. I get access denied all the time. The cards are correctly mounted, as these apps can read files from them, but they can't write any changes back.
5) When opened from the icon, the pdf viewer continues to crash when you try and open any pdf. If gpdf is launched from the terminal, it opens the pdfs fine. This isn't that big a deal, but it's weird that it happens. Supplemental to this, is there a way to get the pdf viewer to scroll onto the next page rather than just scroll to the end of the current page and then need you to tap the button to move it onto the next page? I'd love continuous scrolling, like in acrobat. Should I be using a different pdf app within GPE for this?
6) I want to import date to / export data from the address book. Where is the information held and is it possible to import data into it so I don't have to type everything in again manually.
7) Beyond NAND backups, is there a way to backup the GPE PIMs? Ideally I'd like to export the data from the address book and calendar to another format and have the backups readable by another machine should I ever break my Z. I'm very conscious about losing data.
Thanks!!

hmmm .... good point! ... maybe I should go look at the ipkg code altogether ... afterall, it should be a matter of iterating through the files that are installed, and ipkg-linking them if they are on external media.

Yeah, that looks rather ugly . IIRC someone fixed that in .dev, will have a look.
2) The keymap isn't quite how I'm used to. I rather like the sticky shift and function keys that the Sharp Rom has. Is there a way to alter the GPE keymap to allow this?
The "sticky" keys are actually a driver hack from Sharp in kernel 2.4. The keys aren't configured to be sticky in userspace. I implemented sticky keys for Poodle 2.6 and I can tell you that it's more trouble than it's probably worth it. You should see Poodles xmodmap and the changes to Opie to make it work with sticky keys...
Until someone reworks the 2.6 kbd driver for sticky keys, I don't see that coming to SL-Cxx00 anytime soon, sorry.
3) I can't find Alt anywhere, which is making application based menu navigation a bit tricky. Anyone know where this is?
Alt should be the japanese key to the left of "Ctrl" but by the looks of it that doesn't work in X. Will have a look.
4) I have a fat CF, a fat32 CF and a ext2 SD but neither abiword nor gnumeric will write to these. I get access denied all the time. The cards are correctly mounted, as these apps can read files from them, but they can't write any changes back.
That sounds like a permission problem to me. Make sure your user has rw access to the folder.

Could you add that to the OE bugtracker please?
And mention that your system is OZ 3.5.4.1, not hentges-something.
6) I want to import date to / export data from the address book. Where is the information held and is it possible to import data into it so I don't have to type everything in again manually.
I'm not much into PIM, so I have no idea how well import / export works, sorry.
7) Beyond NAND backups, is there a way to backup the GPE PIMs? Ideally I'd like to export the data from the address book and calendar to another format and have the backups readable by another machine should I ever break my Z. I'm very conscious about losing data.
The files are most-likely in ~/.gpe somewhere.

That's probably not worth the trouble. Collies / Poodles future lies in root-on-SD, not root-on-flash + ipkg-link.
Now that I finally have a stable release out, I can work on the more intrusive changes I were planning to implement for some time now. This is one of them.
And if I understood HRW correctly, he is looking forward for something like this for low-flash devices as well (OIOW: OZ is likely to move to root-on-SD as well eventually)

That's a good point there! You are right. Root-on-SD would solve the space constraint without complications with the ipkg-linking issues.
So how about Akita with its 128mb ram. Would it be in that direction too? Does it mean we can have 128mb of RAM and root-on-SD as storage? That would be neat! ... hmmm ... the altboot current does that right?

Hi. I flushed my sl-5500 with the henteges rom from http://oz.hentges.net/releases/3.5.4.1/T1/collie/ (http://oz.hentges.net/releases/3.5.4.1/T1/collie/). I used the three files from that url (cardfs zImage (64-0) and initrd) but I still having some problems with the kernel version on startup. Aditionaly I have some other problems in GPE. Seting the time, changes on the date and time don't look to make effect or behave erraticly. Login in to GPE, for some reason (maybe date and time isue) some users fail to start GPE from the login.
Which kernel should I use? Where can I get it? Is there any chance the kernel to fix the time isue?

Hi
The package aliens has not fully installed on my collie, there are a few png files but no executables.
Is this just on my machine or is it a bug?
The feed descriptions were also a little screwed up, I fixed these then found out that the feeds are dead, any idea what is going on with these as I cannot run ipkg update and add new packages automatically.
Froot exits with an error message, but works apart from that.
The rest appears stable and fast.

At this time I can't log with my user so I'm login with root. This worked fine up to now. Recently I can't launch any setings app or terminal on GPE (mini browser launches) nor log in through ssh. I can ping it, but when I try to connect it fails in the authentification of any user. I hard reseedt it but it made no difference.

No, I downloaded the three files from [a href=\"http://oz.hentges.net/releases/3.5.4.1/T1/collie/]http://oz.hentges.net/releases/3.5.4.1/T1/collie/
md5's match for the three of them with the one on the page!

For some reason the kernel is not flashed. You can trust me when I say that the Collie kernel on my site is not 3 month old
Please make sure to rename it to "zImage", format the CF card and try again.

By the looks of it, the old suspend bug is back
Suspending via menu works fine.
-
Maybe it's just me but i noticed a few things with hentges on akita (both opie and gpe)
opie:
- sound doesn't work
- suspend bug is present when switching from menu or with the on/off button
- sd card doesn't get mounted or viewed, totally missing.
- cf cards that worked before (cf bluetooth and dlink wifi) doesn't get recognised but cf eth billionton works
gpe:
- suspend bug still present
- sound works ok
- sd not detected as in opie
- cf cards as in opie
hope this helps

Missing sound in Opie is an Opie bug. It works sometimes, usually it doesn't.
I have yet to see a single suspend / resume freeze, there is no such bug and is likely caused by a driver for some of your additional hardware.
SD cards are auto-mounted just fine, even with multiple partitions. If you've changed the partitioning of your card you'll have to edit /etc/fstab to make it mount in /media/card, otherwise it will be mounted in /media/$PARTITION by the auto-mounter.

I just noticed this post...Been spending some quality time with my new bike for the last couple of weeks.
Congrats, Coredump! Great job.
I downloaded the collie tree, but was wondering before I flash...The two items from my last attempt at 3.5.4.1 were the suspend problem (which still seems to be around, at least in limited quantities), and the bash problem with only executing one command then hanging.
Has the bash problem been fixed?
Thanks,

There were no changes to bash recently, so I don't think so

Excellent release, Coredump. A few observations if I might...
1) Bash still had the same problem, executing one command then not returning the command prompt. I installed the bash from the 3.5.3 feeds (which was also 3.0r4), and it works fine.
2) One of the things I do post install is to rearrange the tabs using opie-tabmanager. This package no longer appears in the 3.5.4 or 3.5.4.1 feeds. Was this functionality combined into another package? I have the one from the 3.5.3 feed, but I thought I would ask before installing old packages.
Other than that, everything looks good. The suspend thing is a known issue thats been beat to death...Again, thanks to Coredump and all of the OZ developers for a job well done.

I decided to install the basic version of opie (hentges 3.5.4.1) without the added bundle of programs.
This enable me just to install what I wanted, in fact I even removed about 25 packages from this basic version.
All is well and it is fast.
I have now got my first problem!
I cannot get a desktop entry for prboom-opie.
I have a prboom.desktop in /opt/QtPalmtop/apps/Games/, I have an icon in /opt/QtPalmtop/pics/, I have a link to prboom.sh in /opt/QtPalmtop/bin/.
prboom works from the command line.
Any suggestions?

Have you clicked the reload icons (or similar) button on the Settings tab?

Hi Si, thanks for the quick reply.
Have you clicked the reload icons (or similar) button on the Settings tab?
That was one of the programs that I removed, I have now re-installed it, but to no effect. The prboom icon is still AWOL.

I just looked at the earlier posts stating that a root file system is the way to go. I agree. Installing packages is a real pain and the machine loses some of the links, especially on the card file system installation.
As a result, I have attempted numerous times to install using both the whole rfs.bin files (both opie and gpe) and the tarballs. The only success I have had consistently is the gpe tarball. The gpe loop-image comes up to a black screen. I cannot even access the opie loop-file (the thing respawns too fast). Of the tarballs, gpe installs, but opie cannot get bast the media gag screen. While I like gpe
So, I am am back to the cfs for a while. I really hope that the rough edges for rfs installs can be ironed out. The thought of installing without ipkg-link sounds good.

the question early in this thread never was really answered...
what's the difference between OZ vanilla and Hentges?

PrBoom and a snes emulator in default? I'm sold.
Flashing in the morning

As for the person with a PrBoom issue, the .desktop file should be in /opt/QtPalmtop/apps/Games

As you can see that is where I had put the .desktop file, but I found an easier way to deal with it.
I decided to give my Z to my daughter, and she wouldn't like doom, so I took it off.
Many thanks for the reply though.

oops, sorry 'bout that
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I think that snes9x is broken... the dialog pops up, i can select a file, then it spits out 'snes9x: command not found". Do i need to install the actual emulator seperately? i would think it would be included in the wrapper
Oh, and any way to remove the 'ding' when suspending/resuming?
-
benplaut--
Snes9x doesn't appear to be installed, just opie-sh-snes (a shell to run Snes9x). Somewhat more confusing, I can't find snes9x in any of the feeds, so maybe it hasn't been built yet (?)... small pity, as I'm curious to see if it can do full-screen with any speed yet (I will say that MPlayer seems to be MUCH faster on this release in full-screen--I can actually watch videos now, should I wish!).
I'm curious about the snes9x thing too, though--that'd be fun to have working.
-
Oh, and a minor annoyance--I couldn't seem to install scummvm; gave me some sort of error about installing SDL, though I can't remember the error exactly (I'll try it again when I get home and post the error).
Nice release, though! GPE looked very promising (actually, it looked totally cool), but I'm sorta stuck with Opie for now because of kdepim/pi and Opie-Reader; if I can find the time to get reacquainted with OZ, I'll try to get those compiled and running; I know Hrw has better things to do with his time (like relax for a while, man! You're doing incredible work with OZ, but take care of yourself!).
