I have searched the forums. I have read the how-tos followed links off-site. But I still can't seem to get any window manager to work.
I download the files from the feeds, I install, I change all the lines that need changed, I check to see the files are there - but when I launch Fluxbox or Xfce all I get is a blank screen. No icons, no menus, nothing. No way to open a console, no way to find anything.
After wrestling with with two, I decided to go with Xfce - mostly because the instructions were the most complete. I downloaded the following packages onto my little C1000:
xfce 4.2.2
xfce4-mntplugin 0.3
xfce4-battery-plugin 0.3.0
xfce4-taskbarplugin 0.2.2
xfce4-systray-plugin 4.2.2
xfce4-panelmenu_plugin 0.3.1
xfce4-menu-pdax 0.0.1
(version numbers courtesy of the graphical Package manager)
I've installed Rox. I've entered the magic command:
# rox --pinboard=MYPINBOARD
when i type in "startxfce4" it launches nicely with no errors, the little mouse shows up and I can right-click (shift-click) to Add or Delete workspaces... but that's it. Nothing. Nada. Nil. Nyet.
What am I missing? Please help this poor lost soul!
Thank you!

Did you pull these down from the feed via package manager or manual?
Did you install libiconv from the beta1 feed?
When you exit out of xfce what error messages do you see?
Running beta3 or beta4?
If you are pulling the packages from mail.pdaxrom.org/contrib/chero... you might have some problems.... I had problems with them....

Make sure you dont mix packages... they dont play well...

Is the add/delete workspaces menu from ROX? Normally xfce4 shows the full menu when you right click. The panel is quite finicky though, and the short solution to this is to download and use fbpanel instead. Put this in your startxfce4 script, or possibly even just put in xterm/aterm temporarily so you can do something on startup...

The add/delete workspaces is the middle-click menu. You probably don't have the correct xmodmap loaded. xfce4_4.2.2 was compiled for CXX0-devices and the startxfce4-script that's included doesn't load the xmodmap for CXX00 devices.
I'll PM skot some modified scripts.
I haven't tested beta4, so if you're running beta4, I don't know whether everything will work.
To go to a default startup, remove the xfce-related files from ~/.config and ~/.cache from your home-dir. You should at least have a panel and a taskbar, even without the correct scripts.
Have fun,
Chero.

Hi,
Does the default window manager work?

Thanks for the responses, everyone!
In order:
1) Yes, I pulled them down through feeds - including Chero's.
2) I had Beta 1 installed, so I downloaded Beta 3 and re-flahsed.
However, when I went to the link you gave for the xfce4 files, Package manager didn't see any files. So, I downloaded them manually to my desktop and loaded them on my CF card.
But when I unpacked them, they all showed up as directories - and they wouldn't install.
What have I done wrong? What should I do next?
Thanks again!

Unpack them???? you dont need to unpack them... do this... copy all the data to 1 directory... the list of the basic files from chero's server....
open up the shell...
# cd /where/the/files/are
# ipkg install *.ipk
Make sure that you get libiconv from the beta1 7x0-860 feed... you will need it...
**Side Note**
Chero Directories arent ipk feeds... just a server with packages... basicly, as you already know, they will not work with package manager...
Give that a go and let me know the results...

OK - I got the .ipk files and installed them with no problem. (I have no idea where I downloaded those other files from, but they WERE .gz files... go figure.)
Got everything installed and ... same thing. Or should I say - same nothing.
I've got a lovely blue screen with a mouse sitting on top of xfce - and no menu, no panel, no pinboard, nothing.
I have to reset the Z, and when I #startx everything is fine (and Rox is working fine there).
What have I done wrong now?
Thanks again.

start xfce once you are completely in... do a
Crtl + Alt (the button direct to the right of control) + Backspace(DEL)
This will drop you back to the shell... what errors do you see?
-
Thanks for that tip.
A received a whole screen of errors: The first few were problems with xinitrc.xfce4 having a error while loading akita.xmodmap.
Then the following applications all "lost its connection to the display:"
xfce4-session
xfce4-mcs-manager
xftaskbar4
xfdesktop
And libxfcegui4 had an ICE I/O Error.
At the end of a lot of those errors it suggests: "most likely the X server was shut down or you killed/destroyed the application."
I hope that means something to you.
Meanwhile, I'm going to check on the proper path for my akita.xmodmap. THAT I can fix!
Thanks again!

seems like you pressed ctrl-alt-bs ...
did you remove .config and .cache from your home dir (or at least the xfce-related-dirs in .config and .cache) ?
Chero.

seems like you pressed ctrl-alt-bs ...
The ctrl-alt-bs was to review the error messages skot was getting...
due to the fact that normally he would just reboot his Z...
ok... pm me you script if you can... or post is here...
ohh... you dont have rox -pinboard=XXXXXXX in your xinitrc.xfce4 do you?
but just post your xinitrc.xfce4 here... copy and paste...
Late
PS. Have you tried any of chero's scripts... he is the XFCE KING! and he knows more about this setup then I do... let me know how those worked for you... and any changes it made or it was the same result...
-
Chero - I did delete the .config and .cache files. No luck.
Late - I DO have rox --pinboard==MYPINBOARD in xinitrc.xfce4
I will copy in paste as soon as my Z charges back up!
Thanks for trying to help!
-
so yes Rox -pinboard=XXXXX (your default pinboard)....
If so take it OUT!... it might be causing a conflict and causing the xftaskbar and and the panelmenu in the background and then the xfdesktop if loading afterwards and all you will see is the XFCE backdrop...

Chero sent me two scripts which solved all the problems! Thanks so much to everyone for their help!
Now to play with my settings! Woot!
