Title: How to access the "terminal"???
Post by: dcbpe on February 27, 2004, 12:53:39 pm
I am about as newbie as newbie gets....so this has got to be the correct forum to post in.

I have just purchased a 5600, it is my very first handheld.  Also, I have zero Linux experience.  I have been looking around here at ZUG, answering questions for myself and playing with my Z.

I\'ve been able to answer most questions as I\'ve come to them, except one...how does one exit the GUI and get to the \"terminal\"?

All I want to do (for now) is install a new screen saver (the Trek one), and the how-to-doc gives some cryptic stuff that looks like something from my old DOS 3.0 PC.  I\'m assuming \"terminal\" is what an old timer like me calls a \"command prompt\", but I can\'t find the confounded thing.

Please help a newbie out.....

Thanks in advance

I have a c860 and I had the same question for a full day after getting mine.  The simple answer is there is an application icon for the \"Terminal\".  It is the very last application icon on mine.  I missed it for a full day and went crazy trying to create a shell icon.   How stupid can I feel?

I just received by 5600 also.  Terminal is on the CD, not installed by default.

Once you install it, it will appear as one of your applications.

First you need to find the installation file, which has extension \"ipk\". I use \"qpe-terminal_1.5.0-3_arm.ipk\" which I downloaded somewhere from the net.
Easiest to get this on your Zaurus, is to use a memory card. First insert it in your Z, automatically a folder \"Documents/Install_Files\" will be created on it. Then copy the IPK from your PC to that folder (using a cardreader or such device).
Finally on your Z go to the \"settings\" tab, \"add/remove software\", click the package you want to install, press \"install\", then exit the package installer.
An icon \"Terminal\" will be added to your system.

A few tips to get started:
you obviously need to type linux commands, you can find various sources on the net.
In the terminal, you are logged in per default as \"Zaurus\" (type \"whoami\" to see that). Often you need to be \"root\" (or \"superuser\") for more advanced tasks -type \"su\" to login as \"root\". Take \"exit\" to leave, twice to exit from root. Make sure you understand what you are entering, you can screw up a lot if you type the wrong commands.

Good luck, you\'re in for a \"steep learning curve\" as someone put it -I can concur that ;-)

After you have the terminal installed how do you install the new screen saver?

Thanks,

Thanks to all!

I have installed terminal...and been to it.  Can\'t find the  / on the the damn keyboard, but I know there is a list of keystrokes around here somewhere.  I haven\'t had the time to use terminal to change my screensaver yet.  I did try to use filemanager (like the guy in the other thread), but I guess it doesn\'t work because you need to be \"root\" and not \"zaurus\".

no big...I\'ll get to it later.

Thanks for all the input....

If the 5600 keyboard is the same as the 5500 keyboard (and I think it is) the \"/\" is there (along with the \"?\").  It\'s the \"\" that isn\'t.  On the 5500, that\'s Shift+tab.

on my 5600 it\'s the first key to the LEFT of the space key. no shift required.

Well...once I found the time to change the screensaver, I did something wrong.

I downloaded \"trekscreensaver.png\" to my \"Install_Files\" folder and renamed it to \"Zaurus_logo.png\"
I then went to terminal, enter the su command, and went to the the \"Install_Files\" folder.
I entered the command \"cp Zaurus_logo.png /home/QtPalmtop/pics/Zaurus_logo.png\"
I then confirmed that the file had copied (I had previously deleted the original, so the file wouldn\'t show up at all had the copy not been successful).
I then exited terminal, and waited for the screensaver to come on

but it still is the Zaurus logo......

What did I do wrong?
