Title: How Many Of You Are Recent Switchers?
Post by: eji on July 12, 2006, 02:05:33 pm
This isn't a Mac "issue" per se, but it doesn't really belong in a non-Mac-related forum here.

We're a pretty geeky crowd here, and I was wondering how many of you fellow Z users are recent (as in, the past year) switchers to the Mac? You get one side on, for instance, the MacRumors forums, where non-techie folks seem to be a dime a dozen, but it'd be nice to get some idea of how many power users have taken the plunge.

For the record, I switched in the pre-iPod days.

I switched about 2 years ago when the uni mandated laptops, and i didn't want to spend a year getting linux to work on it -> powerbook 12". My workstation and server are still running linux, though.

I've also been a mac guy since before the iPod.  If anybody had technical mac questions, fire away.  That's what I do for a living.  I'm also a linux geek and keep one winxp machine for gaming.

Converted to Linux (Offically) back in 2002...
(Dove into Mandrake, Redhat and Debian back in the mid-late 90's but never stuck)
Haven't looked back since... if I didn't have to use the Active Directory Admin tools at work... I would run Linux on my 'all' my pc's at work...
(I have a total of 3 desktops on my desk... Fedora, Solaris 10 and XP)

Hi, here my story:

I am a Mac user since 1992 and switched from M68000 to PowerPC and not yet to Intel (still waiting for the Powerbook G5 - oops - the MacBook Pro Merom). So, I used the Mac even before the modern Zaurus appeared (there was a non-Linux Zaurus 5800 with a full PCMCIA slot around 1996 and of course the Newton).

And before that I was a user of HP/UX 9.x and 10.x - at that time a really great system based on X11 and Motif/Xt. And even before NeXT was developed (but those guys knew the HP/UX system).

With this "heritage" the Zaurus was my first Linux system...

I am a mac user since 1987 when my wife wanted a computer she could use without taking a class. Since that time I have tried LinuxPPC, Yellow Dog Linux and Debian. Each time I have tried a Linux flavor was due to the need of a command line interface, UNIX tools and programs found on X Windows. With Mac OS X, I am back to mac for good. I have had a performa, a PowerTower Pro, a 9500, a Silver Bullet (which I still have), an iBook provided by work and now a MacBook Pro. I would of waited for a merom based machine, but when my iBook died, my agency provided me a  Dell Lattitude piece of junk. I just am not productive on Windows so I bought my own mac laptop. I also owned a Newton which was crushed in the truck of the company car.

While linux is not new to me, the Zaurus is cool, especially after putting up with a hormonal palmos for the last few years.

I have used Mac on and off for years with Mac Plus being used at home beside my linux workstations and servers.  I finally worn to a ibook at work since i did not want a windows machine and I still wanted to IT staff to take care of my workstation.  I still have a windows workstation but I uses my ibook for almost everything.

I am still debating if I will buy an macbook instead of a linux laptop when I leave my current job to take care of my own company.  I still have a few months to decide that though.

I'm new to mac in this last month.  I have a mac mini core solo.  I'm using  fetchmail, procmail, qpopper, postfix and stunnel to make a more secure mail server for my zaurus to retrieve mail from road runner.

The thing is a dream for having low power, small size, and the OS is both simple, powerful and flexible.  I'm still trying to make the time to learn launchd.  I wasn't interested in macs until OS X.

The mac is in the company of many boxes (gentoo, solaris 10 x86, kubuntu and xp) and a few laptops.

I got my first Mac about 1.5 years ago a 12" PowerBook and then about 3 weeks ago I got the new MacBook in Black. I love both machines! only problem I have had of late was when I got my 3200 I'm can see it on the MAC but am unable to see any files ect....
One of these days when things get quiet (like that will ever happen  ) I'm going to play around and try to figure it out.

I switched from a Linux desktop to a PowerMac G5 early this year. The experience has been a bit like when I sold my Porsche and bought a Corvette. I loved the Porsche but there were a lot of quirky little things that I had to ignore and there was always something that needed tuning or fixing. The Mac, like the Vette, not only has more power, it's much more usable as a daily driver

Now, I still have Linux on my Thinkpad, my web server, my MythTV system, a half dozen virtual machines, and of course, the Zaurus but those are special purpose environments where I can get a narrow arc of capabilities working the way I want and then leave it alone.

I'm a mac user since er. . . Thursday.

iBook G3 Dual USB (The sexier version of the iBook G4 in translucent white and magnesium instead of white plastic.) 700mhz, 256MB RAM, 40GB HDD, 14", Combo Drive, OS 10.4.7

Now, how do I get it hooked up to my 5600? ^^

I'll be a Mac user too in a few days. Have ordered a Macbook in order to replace my Windows PC at home.

Of course, I am also interested in the chances to synchronize Macbook and KDEPIM/PI on pdaXrom, also maybe setting up a cross-compiling envoronment for pdaXrom on the Mac etc etc.

I have never used a Mac by now, so I'll be totally new to this system.

Any recommendations regarding software for PIM?

Did someone even get KDEPIM/PI itself to run on the Mac?
Well, the Windows version can probably be used under Parallels, but it should also be possible to compile and use a native Mac version...

I used an Apple IIe back in the 80s ... that's about as close to a Mac as I ever did ... minus playing with executor emulator and couple of others ...

I might be getting another notebook in the new year and hey, might just get a mac! ... but as it is ... the Kohjisha is high on my list as a potential. 8D ... Although it does not have a touch screen ... it can still be pretty nifty in slate form as an ebook. 8)

Too bad Apple never quite make a convertible tablet ... and the only 3rd party modder company EOLed that family of products.

recently I played with a macbook and I was impressed with the ease of use and speed. best of all its unix based as far as I can tell. So I am saving for a macbook pro, unless I get impatient then i will grab just the regular macbook.

I like the macbook better because of its size. Comes a bit closer to a Zaurus than the Pro
It will arrive in the next days. I'm very curious.

I have always been a Mac user. I have an iMac G5 (pre-isight) and it works great. I also have quite a bit of vintage machines. They are a Beige Powermac G3, Powerbook G3 Wallstreet, Powermac 6100, and Performa 575. I also have a Powerbook 520c but it is not working anymore  . At my dads work, He owns a Powermac G5, Powerbook G4 15", Powermac G4, Bondi iMac, and a Graphite iMac. He is a photographer so thats why he has so many. I only have 2 PC's at home that both run winxp (which i dislike a lot) and then at work my dad has 3 PC's that run win2000 except 1 runs winxp. I think I will stick with Macs 'till the day I die.

I'll let you guys in on a little secret.  If you don't need the graphics horsepower get a macbook.  The aluminum cases on the pros dent.  The polycarb on the macbooks just "bounces".  I just wish they had backlit keyboards.

I now have the macbook. Great machine and very powerful and nice preinstalled software.
After migrating all data from Windows, I'll look into cooperation with the Zaurus.

I bought my wife a used eMac about 6 months ago, to replace her WinXP Home desktop, which was just too vulnerable. I run a Xandros Linux box, and an old Win XP machine as a webserver and utility machine for stuff Linux doesn't do yet. (My Abyss X2 server runs on Windows, yes, but it's reasonably secure, and its the paid version which I would have to pay for again to switch to the Linux version of.)

I bought the last model of Apple iBooks.  14" 1.42ghz Apple iBook G4 with superdrive.

I needed a laptop.  I decided to get an Apple one.  I already have a desktop with Linux and Windows.  A desktop is gonna be better than any laptop anyway.  I wanted a laptop that was low maintenance and I always wanted to get an Apple so I got the iBook with Mac OS X Tiger.  I love it.  I do quite a bit of video editing on here with Final Cut Pro.  There are lots of open source software for Mac OS X as well.  Battery life on this thing is kick ass too.  6 hours!  And I done it before.

Do I have any regrets?  No.  I just wish I could use x86 Linux on this thing.  (I tried PowerPC Linux on my iBook.  Just a total lack of support and community.  Also no Flash player.)

Hi all,
I am working on the AJZaurusUSB driver and have a new preliminary version. It now works on MacOS X 10.4.8 on a PowerBook G4 (PowerPC) and a MacBook Pro (Core 2 Duo).

There is still one major issue (on the MacBook only!) why I have not yet released it: when switching off the Zaurus, the Mac adds a re-routing entry to the routing table.

After switching the Zaurus on again, this entry is not removed and there is no communication unless you do a very special terminal command. That is not a final, user-friendly sulution...

Is there a way to synchronize the Mac OS X standard PIM tool with KDEPIM/PI?
Or to run KDEPIM/PI under Mac OS X?

I just found a good way to sync files.

FileSynchronize, a file synchronization tool for Mac OS X, does a nice job to synchronize a local directory with a remote one shared using Samba. It is surprisingly fast. Much faster than Unison on the Windows PC. --> recommendet.

Apologies in advance for todays typos, I'm on a Fuji irda keyboard, which is kinda too small for normal typing and too big for thumbpadding. Oh well, I'm getting the hang of it, thanks to the Unagi that I learned in Karate.

Now that I've had my iBook for a while and got used to it, I'm trying to put OSX on my T4210 as a proof of Concept experiment, as no-one has yet to make a reliable claim to having interfaces OSX with a tablet, only the other way around.

It's the partitioning that's a pain in the ass. well, thankyou Slackware for coming to my rescue.

Uggghhh, only about 10 more years and we won't have any more of them in the schools....  Pain to work on.  Fun to carry a lab of 30 or so up a flight of stairs too.

ah....  but what about turning old e-macs into kiosks (running linux) locked down nicely for limited (and possibly unsupervised) reference use by students---  All you'd need is a platform to screw it to, a tough keyboard (also screwed in place) and a touchpad (likewise immobilized).  They would look ok, keep the power bill down and cost little---and if you screwed 'em onto fixed platforms, no more carrying

Our schools got rid of the macs, pretty much. we now have a dell/novell/commercial software setup that looks like something from a defense department pork barrel project.  They are "moving to linux"  which probably means more money for novell and no idea about how the gpl works or what it means.

When asked, I often recommend that people who really can't run linux, or people who want a working appliance rather than a hobby, buy a mac.

We use linux thin clients for that.  It's not that I don't like eMacs with OSX, I just don't like carrying the damn things.  Or opening them up.  You shouldn't have to completely dissemble a machine to replace the hard drive.

true enough...they are not designed with maintenance in mind.
thin clients? k12ltsp or a homebrew ltsp?
in my corner of the world macs are suspect and linux thin clients are clearly communist technology inspired by aliens plotting to subvert Our Way of Life. I did some k12ltsp anyway. worked great. Got called names by people who think whitelisting is a reasonable approach to educational computing. interestingly the clear strengths of linux over windows have some teachers looking at macs again, for personal use, as a sort of nix with training wheels (not thaat I think that that is all there is to OSX)

I'm pretty sure we're using k12ltsp, but don't quote me on that.  We're also doing windows terminal machines.  We're a 90% mac environment with windows for about the other 9% and a few linux machines thrown in.  Most of the mission critical servers are xServes with a few linux machines then a couple winblows server 2003 machines.  Our instruction lab in the central office is all intel iMacs that dual boot to windows xp so we don't have to have half macs and half pcs.

Yeah, the sucker is heavy.
The medical & genetics research institute that about half of my half-time hours as a semi-retired beast of burden are billed to runs about 90% Win2K and 10% Macs, I expect 10.4 ... for the graphics, they tell me. My Zaurus may just be the only machine that ever signs in to the hospital/institute network using Linux, and I only use the free networking on coffee and lunch breaks to check my email etc.  The IP guys who know me are duly impressed that a lowly porter is the only person they know of at MSH running Linux ... one or two of 'em run Fedora or Suse at home. That said, one of the research institute IP guys has a SL 5500 in his desk drawer.

My main, shared home machine went from Win98, to Ubuntu, to Mepis, to a new Intel Mac.
After a month of Mac, I thanked my wife for humouring me by using a Linux desktop OS for years and then humbly apologized for doing that to her.
With Mac we both get the GUI and I still get the shell. Good deal for both of us.
