Microsoft releases Virtual PC for Windows for free
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtualpc...nloads/sp1.mspx (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtualpc/downloads/sp1.mspx)
Virtual PC 2004 SP1
Brief Description
Download the full version of Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 SP1.
The installation will warn on machines running WindowsXP Home edition, but so far its running pretty well on mine!
EDIT:
Good for existing Windows desktop users.
To me, this also serve as a good try-out method for Windows desktop developers who want to try out developing for Z on linux but do not want to install linux just yet or find booting from a liveCD a hassle.
Note that running VirtualPC usually takes up a fair bit of your CPU, so please don't run too many other apps with it and still expect it to be lightning fast. It's afterall, emulating (almost) a whole PC within WindowsXP.
What you can do with it:
1. Install Windows 9x/NT/2k/XP onto a Virtual Machine in it
2. Install Linux onto a Virtual Machine in it
3. Close and save current state anytime, and start up to that state later.
So far, DamnSmallLinux runs on it just fine, both LiveCD and installation. Ubuntu needs to run in safe mode for installation; the screen shows garbage under normal mode. I'm letting it install to hdd so we'll see how it goes in a while.
IMPORTANT
All Virtual Machines created allow you to use local harddisks or create virtual harddisks. Virtual harddisks are basically disk images (a single file) that are mounted within Virtual PC as a drive. That way, you don't mess with the actual file system in your local harddisks when installing another OS.
