Title: Beta 3 Fixes, Customs, Contrib
Post by: loji on July 17, 2006, 11:12:53 pm
I have assembled a collection of edits, fixes, how-to's, and documentation that I thought would be handy for a new user to pdaXrom. The hardest part of learning pdaXrom when I first tried to install it was the fact that there is no one central place for documentation. (apart from this forum) Hopefully this will help bring (and keep) new users around

http://www.thesounddesign.com/zaurus/beta3.htm (http://www.thesounddesign.com/zaurus/beta3.htm)

I also hope that by having all the fixes listed that we can find for the 2.4 system .. we will eventually be able to release an installer that will work from the get-go insted of having to edit scripts and fixes. Any fix not listed please email or PM me. I will try to add more as I continue to explore.

Where can I find a beta3 release for C7x0? Is it more stable than beta1 on C7x0?

beta 3 for 7x0-860 lives in contrib

http://mail.pdaxrom.org/contrib/1.1.0beta3/Zaurus-7x0-860/ (http://mail.pdaxrom.org/contrib/1.1.0beta3/Zaurus-7x0-860/)

The latest 'stable' for 7x0-860 is beta 1 tho. But try it out

Ugh... I forget the name of the tool, but it should be easy enough to dump EVERYTHING into one feed, weed out the wonky, and roll an image that works right the first time (and has the right stuff-- That'll be a conversatio, better tar up the big feed and add a how to).
Does the big sd ipk work with beta3? is there a big sd solution?

Dear adf,

There is no simple solution to big sd cards (>1G). Pdax uses a float library
different from normal sharp rom so one cannot simply extract a kernel
module from normal sharp rom and put it in pdax. The drivers for large
sd cards are from sharp rom and are in binary only (C-guys for 860,
sharp for C3x00 and C1000).

May be in Beta 4 ?

BR,

Felix.

adf, you provoke an interesting thought - isn't the root filesystem including installed programs and settings a nice separate piece of the installation? Could different versions be created with different apps installed and configured ready to go? E.g. things discussed in other topics, like a different default WM, could be provided by a complete different image layout...

Or maybe that's more work than I think and my thoughts are best kept to myself...

Yes I found it and actually tried it. It worked OK until I slip in my 2G SD card. The system locked and would not accept any other cards. After a battery off restart the system halted at "Starting CF service...". I don't know what caused the problem but I gave up trying beta3. Yes you're right about beta1 is the most stable release for C7x0-860

Very nice website indeed!  Everything essential (from the user's perspective) is in one place.
I am just curious about the General Electric usb adapter kit you mention there.
This one looks even more useful than iRiver's and ZHost. Without the cable I don't need to worry about dangling the usb things while fearing breaking the small connector on Z.
I've been googling it but I cannot find relevant information about where and how to buy it. Could you give me a pointer?
Today I also flashed back to Beta3 as I can't stand the bugs and problems in Beta4 which make my C1000 not really usable as before.

Bullshit. softfloat == userspace, kernel modules == kernelspace.

pretty much on the money, considering I used a 4 gig card on beta 1 for months.... in fact ,i did it using tetsu's (sharp) module.   I was curuious t know if anyone had tried the same thing on beta3, not taking a poll to see who didn't think it would work.  The main problem I've found using a shaprish 2.4 kernel with a big sd is ipkg wanting no more than 1 gig on /mnt/card.

Thanks for the pointer. It's a pity that Walgreens only ships within the States. I remember seeing this when I was there (but forgot to buy one    ... ). Maplins' is way too expensive as the single adapter already costs 5.99 pounds, just the same as the whole GE usb kit.
Reichelt has some very cheap offers, but doesn't seem to have the right one for Z:
[a href=\"http://www.reichelt.de/?ACTION=42;atype=akku_select;special=akkus]http://www.reichelt.de/?ACTION=42;atype=ak...t;special=akkus
(BTW it's also selling incredibly cheap SD cards and USN sticks!)
Gotta look around again.

I spent the money on the GE usb kit but only use the Z adapter, so in effect I paid $12.99 for the adapter.  So now I have some extra cables that will probably junk up my workspace until I throw them away.

definitely a useful site.

Maybe we should give some thought to "rerolling" beta3?  pgas has just put up a version for 7x0 zaurii, etc. If this became the default 2.4 version, and the various fixes and updates were incorporated and repackged, would that not qualify as an outta da box stable 2.4?

I have given this thought ... however I don't have a dev enviroment set up, and haven't compiled before -  but that doesn't mean we couldn't give it a shot. I totally support a stable release. In a week or two I"ll have more time to play. I just recently packed up and moved to Utah and I'm working 12 hour days till about 3 am right now.  (theatre gigs are a bit nuts during load-in and tech)

Here's some interesting info:

Graphic Image Builder (released w/ beta1 but should still work)
https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=16351 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=16351)
(actual DOwnload location)
http://mail.pdaxrom.org/download/rc12/ImageBuilder/ (http://mail.pdaxrom.org/download/rc12/ImageBuilder/)

pdaXrom builder quick start
http://www.pdaxrom.org/node/101 (http://www.pdaxrom.org/node/101)

BUilder intro / overview / howto
http://www.pdaxrom.org/node/96 (http://www.pdaxrom.org/node/96)

http://www.pdaxrom.org/node/97 (http://www.pdaxrom.org/node/97)

http://www.pdaxrom.org/node/98 (http://www.pdaxrom.org/node/98)

Add new packages in build system (same as image builder)
http://www.pdaxrom.org/node/99 (http://www.pdaxrom.org/node/99)

The graphic builder would allow to add or remove ipks, but I don't think it allows the configuration of system files. (unless it was scripted as an ipk, which is a bit silly) Does anyone have a dev system I could SSH into? or know of step-by-step how-to's I can take a peek at?  (or even better offer to help)

added /unstable feed mirror since the pdaXrom has been down.

This site is great. I wish I had this when I got started 6 months ago.
I made the jump to Beta4 and now I can't get my wifi working. Just a flashing light.
Anyway, I am going to try to find a way to get back to 2.4 and install Beta3 after I give the card one more shot before I take the trip back.

when I do I will follow this site and get up and running quickly.

thanks for a great head start.

I know that I got my Symbol card working in beta4, but I can't seem to find my installation log for that step of the process.  Anyway, I think the following threads might be helpful for beta4:
[a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=19301&view=findpost&p=127294]https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showt...ndpost&p=127294

Also, there was some issue with beta4 regarding the names you could use for the profiles if you use the Lan & Wifi utility.  The profiles had to be named after the interface you were using, otherwise they wouldn't work.  I used eth0 as the name for my WiFi profile because I was having some problem with even wlan0, which should work according to the following post:
https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showt...ndpost&p=126615 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=19301&view=findpost&p=126615)

I believe the following are more specific to beta3, but this way you've got it all at your fingertips:
https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showt...ndpost&p=124796 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=19087&view=findpost&p=124796)

Thanks for your help on this.
I have found one of these before and tried it with no luck.
I rebooted the system and now I have no light at all on the symbol card and a solid light on the ambicom card. However ifconfig shows only lo.
So it's not even starting the card at all.
Very stranage as Others with a C1000 and one of these cards have it working with no issues.
Anyway, I was thinking that it may be the firmware version on the cards.
I am going to try to force the card up etc but I doubt it will work.

Any news on beta 5? hahah

thanks again.

I haven't read the whole thred, but might I suggest putting all 3 hostap drivers from the beta3 feed (you are using beta3?) that most closely fits the desrciption of your machine. Then install hostap-driver, hostap-utils and hostapd from the sd....
I have the same card (or at least one with the same name, I think) on my 3100. this SHOULD work.

This is really a Beta 3 thread. there is a Beta 4 thread..something about announcing beta4 for extreme testers. I think it iss pinned in the pdaXrom section of the forums.

You should also be able to find instructions at the pdaxrom.org site.

I think, on the whole that you'd really rather not install Beta4 though. it is really just a testing version

Thanks for a great site.  Whenever I update my ROM I always forget essential things so it's good to group them together.

A couple of small points:

1) It would clarify things a bit if you point out that the feed addresses are in the left hand column;

2) You mean backslash instead of forward slash in the SNES emulator description.

One essential thing to add for me with an 860, and possibly all 7/8 series users, is a bugfix for a nasty offset to the pointer (not the arrow, but the part of the screen it affects, oddly) at the top right:

Also abiword doesn't work for me on my 860 unless I install http://zaurus.daemons.gr/menaie/feed/libiconv_1.8-2_arm.ipk (http://zaurus.daemons.gr/menaie/feed/libiconv_1.8-2_arm.ipk)

I'm having trouble with meanie's feed - the package manager doesn't like it so I have to use wget and install manually.

I added the info about the pointer for 7X0-860 series. Beta 3 isn't really the best release for those machines though. Beta1 is much more stable on them, but beta3 is best for C1000 and higher.

I would love ot .. but firstly we need to build a new stable system.  I've made a persistant home from the pdaXrom CD (which didn't work when i ran setup like the instructions say ... I had to extract the rootfs.bin and place it in the root of a FAT directory) I also found the Dl for IMageBuilder which allows you to slipstream ipks into an installable image. (ie: add rox, etc...) but I don't know enough, I tried to run qmake like the instructions say, and it errored saying something about not being set-up correctly.

If someone wants to help with compiling or giving info: I'd much welcome it.

Huh... I had assumed it would be pretty straightforward.  Well.. I can setup an older machine for the purpose of experimenting, I suppose- but it sounds like I'll get pretty much the same results you did.

ps.  If we do get it to work, maybe r0x + a different wm-like fvwm, or ede if we can get the applets working right?
Title: Beta 3 Fixes, Customs, Contrib
Post by: loji on October 04, 2006, 01:12:34 am
Well I was trying to get ImageBuilder-0.0.2 to work. It allows slipstreaming ipks into the initrd and rootfs of the installable image. (ie: don't have to compile it all from scratch ... just have to get image builder up and running to at least add / remove packages.  ie: update abiword, and everything -- possibly add rox : however I'm not sure if it allows editing files within the image, or only installing ipks straightforward.

I was on IRC last night and pgas was helping me out, but still no go. Got further than I did before tho. I'm running into troubles with qmake and make with paths and enviroments not being set. I did:

Code: [Select]
#export QMAKESPEC /usr/lib/qt/
and that allowed qmake to build the ImageBuilder-0.0.2.pro (i think) but even after playing with the Makefile I couldn't get 'make' to work. It kept giving me problems saying that it couldn't find the needed .ui and .moc files in /usr/lib/qt/bin :: however they are in the ImageBuilder directory themselves .. so it was still looking in the wrong place from the export option I had to pass to make qmake work ::: not sure how to move it back, I tried defining absolute paths in the Makefile, but that didn't work either.  I never compiled before, so there are probably steps I'm missing .... the tutorials on pdaXrom site don't help much .. since they are for using svn and the newest versions.

we'll keep tinkering away, and see what happens :: anyone with experience get in touch with me.

small update ... Just added the inf about the Input Settings dialog bug . It rewrites the kernel.map which changes the keybaord layout outside of X (basic shell) so that the [>?.] buttons doesn`t work .. You need to edit the filw if you`ve ever run Input Setup and delete the null keys.

Apparently the correct kernel.map lives in the ipk vender-tweaks .... I`m thinking it ma be possible to combine many fixes into this vender-tweak package and use that for `stablizing` our installs. It would allow a correct image to be made once I get ImageBuilder to work ..and also let peiople apply the patches without re-flashing. .. hmm...interesting though. Most the the vender tweaks package seems to be symlinked .. so I`ll have to do it in a *nix enviroment.

does anyone know if I can untar and edit ..then re-tar and change the extension? or do I need to completly rebuild the ipk?

Hi loji, good to see a few updates - your page is becoming a veritable goldmine!

It might be useful to include this nugget:

If you get errors during bootup relating to libiconv or libstdc++, you can fix it by ensuring that the following packages are installed to the root of your filesystem with the command "ipkg -d root install <packagename>"

libstdcxx5-compat_5.0.7_armv5tel.ipk
libstdcxx_5.0.5_arm.ipk
libiconv_1.9.2_arm.ipk

The problem is that if they are installed in another location, it will not be linked until after bootup by the ipkg-link process.

cheers!

just FYI, pdaXii13 is beta3 with all the mentioned fixes/patches and many more pre-applied.
the pdaXii13 installer also has an upgrade/patch option to apply all those fixes to an already installed beta1/beta3 installation.
