It does work OK on laptops but it is a long way off the best version of Linux.

I suspect someone is confusing "best" with "easiest to install"

i would second that, many people seem to like ubuntu because it works out of the box for most of thier needs, i guess that means best for them

anyway wasent ubuntu prducing an embedded version

I replaced sid with kubuntu on my desktop (server is still sarge, and will stay debian) and am quite happy with it on the desktop.  I traded some serious episodic upgrade madness in sid for being a bit less cutting edge, having a release shcedule, easy install, and some issue with the marillat repositories. all in all ubuntu is pretty good... ahead of debian stable, more predictable than testing or unstable.  Or were you hinting that there are non-debian based distros

apt-get bakes my noodle, emerge is much better IMHO, in fact Gentoo overall is way better than anything else I have tried once you get past the first install.

hmmm...another mini distro war.

I have both gentoo and kubuntu.

For ease of maintenance (you don't need to know the underlying linux) and ease of use kubuntu/ubuntu rules.

For flexibility and learning linux gentoo rules.  Gentoo is also easier to have bleeding edge software.  I have a desktop that has fluxbox, kde, gnome, enlightenment e17and fvmn all installed and working with little effort (well except maybe e17).

On a laptop, it depends on the power of the laptop.  If it is an older laptop, kubuntu will be easier on you because the absence of compiling everything.

No, LFS rules for that. Gentoo is LFS for dummies

I concede that point, but I was just comparing gentoo and kubuntu.

I seriously considered gentoo when sid pissed me off.  The thing is I had recently finished reading an article on /. about how the founder of gentoo was quitting his job at microsoft.  Left me wondering about where gentoo was headed.  ubuntu seemed to be gaining steam and had no stories of disto founders working at the linux lab in redmond (the mission of which, it seems to me must be seriously suspect). besides, i LIKE debian

I found the installation to be less than desirable as well. I don't know why anyone would think it's any easier to install than other distros.

I did find a section of the wiki for ubuntu [a href=\"https://wiki.ubuntu.com/EmbeddedUbuntu]https://wiki.ubuntu.com/EmbeddedUbuntu[/url] that seems to look like there might be some truth behind the idea of ubuntu on the zaurus, but it looks like it is just theory right now.
