Title: Posts Moved From 3.5.4.x Upgrades
Post by: al_do on April 27, 2006, 04:21:40 pm
hi all

I'm giving my noob point of view to contribute to "what sould be updated" (or created?) thread, so please be patient since it could even be OT...

I think this could help to keep in mind non-linux-experienced-user point of view, that's all.

what I miss most in order of relevance:

1) a good pim software (like opie one, not gpe)
2) an easy way to sync to a windoze machine (opie-like)
3) a working package manager (I'm learning how to use ipkg but I think this is not for beginners or occasional users)
4) any working emulator to play something when I'm travelling on a bus (xmame? snes9x? but keep in mind that if they don't work from scratc....)
5) a working mp3 player and eventually a video player (keep in mind how hard it could be for a non-experienced user to use a command line mp3 player!)
6) a pdf reader

I've tryed both opie and gpe on my c3k: I like them both but I'm not satisfacted

ty in advance and bye,
alessandro (IT)

al_do: this thread is not for such posts but for exact requests what users want.

I'm sorry... but I thought my requests where quite "exact"....

If you think of a PDA from a windows user point of view they're absolutely exact....
And I think a lot of people own a Z without beeing able to hack it or compile anything...

This thread is specifically for people to request updated versions of programmes to be compiled and added to the upgrades thread. See the first post: https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showt...ndpost&p=119002 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=19095&view=findpost&p=119002)

For your type of questions you should start a new thread - not only will they then not move this thread off-topic, but also people will see what you're asking and you'll have more exposure for your questions.

also is mplayer updated with the iwmmxt patches?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=136291\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Yes, but that doesn't work with softfpa, since the instructions overlap. It does work with EABI
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=136310\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
when might we reasonably expect EABI?

It's running on my c700 and hx4700 right now. You can build it yourself with OE

See [a href=\"http://wiki.debian.org/ArmEabiPort]http://wiki.debian.org/ArmEabiPort[/url]. In short: it's the end to all the 'but <foo> uses a different float thingie, so it's incompatible'

I'm off fishing again next week... after that I guess I'll setup OE and give angstrom testimage a spin   It sounds like a major breakthrough.

Most cool new stuff from china uses armv4t chips, since those chips give the most bang for your buck.

[span style=\'font-size:14pt;line-height:100%\']Overall[/span], this release is extrememly good--it's much more stable than the SharpROM release that I was running, and much faster. It looks very good, and most of the applications that I use are available. It's great to see that there's such active development for the Zaurus, I'd like to thank everyone that's helped contribute to this release.

The altboot package is absolutely terrific! I'm using a 1GB SD card as my root directory, and it works flawlessly. On the Sharp ROM I had a horrible spaghetti mess of symlinks to get something similar that never worked as well. This is a huge improvement.

[span style=\'font-size:14pt;line-height:100%\']My configuration:[/span]
    Zaurus SL6000-L (tosa)
    OZ/Opie 3.5.4.2
    Linux pimento 2.6.17 #1 PREEMPT Fri Jun 30 08:43:48 CEST 2006 armv5tel unknown

[span style=\'font-size:14pt;line-height:100%\']Now for the bugs & observations & requests...[/span]

wireless
I have been unable to connect to any wireless network (with or without WEP). I
can establish an 802.11b connection (the iwconfig program reports that the Zaurus
is associated with the desired wlan), but udhcpc never gets an
address. The networks I've tried work correctly with many other clients, and I've
tried establishing connections with the Network Settings applet, using ifup, using ifconfig and iwconfig, etc.

opie PIN authentication
it's inconsistent...sometimes the screen locks properly, sometimes the screen is
not locked after the Zaurus suspends (either manually or by timing out and
        auto-suspending)

if it's successful, why prompt with "enter opie" and "another try" options--
        this doesn't make sense

suspending the Zaurus should _always_ cause it to lock the screen

putting the Zaurus in the cradle should not bypass the authentication (ie., if
it's screen locked, it should remain that way when inserted in the cradle)

zsafe
suspending the Zaurus should _always_ cause it to lock the application, returning
to the zsafe password prompt upon "resume". This is the behavior on the desktop,
        and under the Sharp ROM.

keyboard
the "numlock" sequence [Fn][Num] doesn't work (the "N" symbol appears on the
taskbar, but the keys don't produce numbers

        [Fn][Space} doesn't produce the pipe (|) character

the key repeat rate is too fast

the [Fn] key is not sticky

buttons
On my 6000, there doesn't seem to be a way to map the button with the "dot"
        (above the [Cancel] button)

froot
related to other issues with mapping buttons, the button in the middle of the
directional (arrow) ring doesn't send the [SPACE] character

konsole (opie-embeddedkonsole) doesn't run--the icon appears on the taskbar, but the
        application doesn't launch.

KOPI
with the kopi-alarm applet in use, the alarm correctly wakes up the
        zaurus, but the

screen brightness (backlight)
the screen is always at full brightness--it doesn't dim when the Zaurus is running
off the battery. The brightness slider on the taskbar or the "Light and Power"
settings applet has no effect. The option to dim the screen when running on
        battery has no effect.

[span style=\'font-size:14pt;line-height:100%\']Missing Applications[/span]
These are applications that I used often under the Sharp ROM. I
understand that running Sharp apps is no longer possible due to the
soft-float issue, but I'd really like to see these applications--or
programs with equivalent functionality--available for OZ/Opie:

                Opera
I found Opera to do a very good job at dealing with
the screen size on the Zaurus, managing bookmarks,
                        etc.

                ethereal

                kgrok
it was great to be able to use the same database (flat
file + forms) on my desktop & Zaurus
                                http://www.bitrot.de/pda_kgrok.html (http://www.bitrot.de/pda_kgrok.html)

                eLog
a terrific tool for maintaining electronic log books,
                        with synchronization capabilities between different
installations. Again, I miss the ability to use the
same tools on my PDA and server/desktop
                                http://midas.psi.ch/elog/download.html (http://midas.psi.ch/elog/download.html)

                T&T Bureau de Change
                FXConv
two different programs to display currency
conversions. I consider these essential when
traveling--they can download updated currency rates
from the internet. I understand that they depend on
floating point handling found on the Sharp ROM, but
I'd really love to see a port to OZ or a program of
                        equivalent function.
                                http://free.pages.at/uberger/zaurus/fxconv_en.html (http://free.pages.at/uberger/zaurus/fxconv_en.html)
                                http://www.vanstrien.net/zaurus/ttbureaudechange/ (http://www.vanstrien.net/zaurus/ttbureaudechange/)

                T&T World CLock
A clock, displaying time in different cities. More
convenient than the "City Time" applet.
                                http://www.vanstrien.net/zaurus/ttworldclock/index.html (http://www.vanstrien.net/zaurus/ttworldclock/index.html)

                lep-gen
One-time password generator, compatible with S/Key.
This was invaluable as a means of generating a secure,
one-time password when logging into my account from an
untrusted remote machine (such as in a cyber-cafe).
                                http://www.ima.umn.edu/~pliam/lepgen/ (http://www.ima.umn.edu/~pliam/lepgen/)

                nethack
it would be fun to have this compiled for OZ. The
                        Sharp version works surprisingly well.

Let me repeat: forums are NOT bugtrackers.

See http://openzaurus.org/wordpress/2006/09/02...2-rc2-released/ (http://openzaurus.org/wordpress/2006/09/02/oz-3542-rc2-released/) for more info

As Koen says, for bugs please add them to the bugtracker, for software you'd like to see included either create a .bb yourself, or create a post in something like the "User Request for Applications" section.

I wonder whether it would be worth adding a page to the OZ wiki where people can request specific software to be added/ported to OE. I'm not sure how fast such a list would fill up with rubbish/silly/unrealistic requests. Any thoughts?
