Hello,
I am interested in getting a Zaurus again (had the SL-C760 a few years back) I was excited by the new models available, but discouraged by the price differences. I have looked at the comparason charts for all of the Zaurus models, ( http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=e...%3Doff%26sa%3DG (http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=ja&u=http://ezaurus.com/lineup/sl/compare_spec.html&sa=X&oi=translate&resnum=6&ct=result&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dzaurus%2Bcomparison%2Bchart%2Bsl-c1000%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26safe%3Doff%26sa%3DG) ) with pricejapan.com selling the SL-C1000 for 330 USD, I can pick up a 4 gig SD and Compact flash WiFI for approx 100 USD more. Why is this NOT a good idea? I am willing to wait a month to save up if the SL-C3200 is worth it, but seeing a SL-860 for rock bottom pricing......very tempting, v.s. getting a SL-3200 that has almost the same processing power doesn't seem logical. Am I missing something?
I looked at other posts for a comparison but could not find any, If you are too busy to respond - just a quick link to where I could get the info would be fantastic.
Thanks in advance,

I was in Japan two weeks ago and, of course, went to Akihabara and had a look at the Zauruses there. I asked myself the same question you're asking and didn't see a compelling reason to upgrade from my C860. Just my $0.02.

"The mylo instant messages, Skypes, browses Web pages, send email, plays music, and shows pictures: It’s a $350 device that Sony will put on the market in September, and it uses Wi-Fi (slow 802.11b) for communications. The device, the name of which is supposed to remind us that “my life [is] online,†includes support for Skype, including SkypeIn (inbound “real†telephone number) and SkypeOut (outbound phone network calling), which means it’s a Wi-Fi telephone. A QWERTY keyboard is hidden and can slide out. It comes with 1GB of flash memory and a Memory Stick slot."
Think this will be any compitition to Zaurus?

Well,
I'm glad it's a linux device, and it probably will do all those things right out of the box, which a Zaurus does not always do. Sometimes you have to work for your Zaurus, sometimes it works for you.
As for the Mylo, I suspect that you won't be able to run a web server, ruby, perl, python, and PHP on it, write your own scripts and have shell access without some hacking and cracking. A Zaurus does do all of those things for the price of the time it takes to install and configure them.
I think you either love or hate a Zaurus, and I think different people have different reasons for owning them. It's not your typical consumer device, so asking whether Mylo will compete with it is in some ways redundant. From a purely marketing point of view, yes. It does compete.
..... But I probably wouldn't buy one. Why?
For reasons I cannot easily explain I need a handheld device that will run what appears to be a commercial grade web server. It's my kind of toy. Some kids liked the Hot Wheels cars, I liked the Tonka trucks. The Zaurus is the Tonka truck of handhelds, and I wouldn't own another one.

maximusz:
The pxa270 CPU used in the cxxxx models features iwmmx extensions which enables it to play up to 640x480 res divx/xvid pretty smoothly when you run the bvdd+iwmmx optimised mplayer. The pxa270 also features cpu speed scaling- you need them extra ~200Mhz and iwmmx if you want to be able to get the most out of zpsx, the playstation emu for the Z that is nearing completion!
ATM you still can't run Linux anywhere near as well on a HTC Uni as you can on a cxxxx Z so its still the best palmtop computer there is! Some might argue for the Z6000 with all the wireless addins and the 6000 has a better screen but no pxa270. The build quality of the Z is also much better than the Uni- Z also has a internal microdrive/CF slot (on c3x00 models), spare CF slot and a bigger, better screen too!

Maximusz, I had a C760 that got bricked and I went through the same series of questions and finally decided on the C1000. I must tell you, no regrets. CPU is better but the best thing is the USB host/client. I can now easily use a USB mouse, keyboard, and a thumbdrive for extra storage as well as plug into any PC and access the installed SD or CF card. This opens up a whole new world. Now that I have the C1K, wouldn't go back to the C760. If I can find a USB wifi that works I'll be set.

I guess that ebay auction was a scam, it looks like ebay disabled it......
Thanks for your help everyone, based on the comments, I will have to look into a C1000 or bigger to be happy. I appreciate all of the comments and help to ensure I spend my $$ properly........although how could anyone be unhappy with ANY Zaurus
Feel free to comment if you own a C1K or greater as to why you love that particular model............... oh how I wish there was built in Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/GPS PLUS Compact flash , USB and SD built in... my decision would be sooooo easy..... but I guess I am never happy......

The real reson that the C1000 is better than the C860 is that Sharp aren't making the C860 anymore
I moved from C760 to C1K cause I broke the screen on the C760. Got cheap 2GB CF and SD cards and don't miss the built in micro drive.
Of course some people don't like having to lose the CF slot

When I was shopping around for my Z, a few monhs ago, I had my heart set on a 3100 (this was just before the the 3200 was released). However, just before I was going buy it, I had a car accident which effectively wiped out most of my Z funds.
With my reduced funds, I started taking a serious second look at the 1000. I liked the fact that the 1000 has the same battery as the 3x00 and since it doesn't have a MicroDrive to power, you get a longer battery life.
It had the same USB host mode as the 3x00 which is a key feature for me.
The deal clincher for me was albertr's project (I don't have link handy) to install Wifi and Bluetooth internally in the 1000 since has it has empty space inside where the MicroDrive is located on a 3x00. I never understood why Sharp didn't make a clamshell Z with those features. I guess Wifi and bluetooth aren't important to the Japanese target audience. I'm still waiting for someone to use abertr's research to set up Wifi,Bluetooth service for the Z since I can't solder together two paperclips.

Can somebody explain to me why the USB host capability is so useful? Not cool, mind you, I can see why it is cool. It seems to me that anything you do with the USB host requires a self-powered USB hub plus a bulky peripheral not designed for a PDA. This defeats the portability of the Zaurus. If you want to use the Zaurus as a desktop replecement, then it is cool but not useful, at least for me.

The USB host feature is great because you can plug in quite a lot of usb devices. If you plug in a powered usb hub, it acts almost like a docking station. You can then plug in keyboard, mouse, dvd, extra hdd, ethernet or bluetooth dongle. I plug in a usb ethernet adaptor most often. mine is quite small too so its easy to carry around with. when i travel extremly light, ie moving between two offices in the same city, then I usually only carry my Z (its bag contains a cf wifi and buetooth cards), and a little pouch containing a retractable sync/power cable, usb host cable and ethernet adaptor, all hanging off my belt.
-
Meanie's reply seems to make my point, most USB peripherals are cool but pointless (dvd!?). As for ethernet, my socket low-power ethernet CF card is very small and does its job. The only one I can see myself using and can't in my present set-up is the mouse.

I use the usb host for: flash keys, my mp3 player (has 5MB hdd so extra storage for my Z!), digital camera, ethernet adaptor, BT dongle, and for fun even my ancient webcam. I hardly ever need to use all of them at the same time and they all work without the need for a powered hub. So it's more than cool, it's extremely useful and pretty essential (for me).

Coming from a 5500 was a huge difference. Since I'm not a programmer and more of a power user the C1K has been effective with its screen resolution and killer apps. Things like Korganizer is great to schedule my appointments, keep track of clients, and check my todo list (something thats hard with a 320x240 resolution for the screen). With a 1G SD card and Cacko's build running the SNES emulator with overclocking and a huge swap space makes average people envy when I show them a Castlevania game.
The clamshell mode has saved my screen a lot. So Sony's new device might be dificult for me to go to. Clamshells are key.

Are you satisfied with the SNES emulation on your C1000? SNES is one of the things I use all of the time on my Tapwave Zodiac and I was hoping that the Zaurus would be able to to it as well. Thanks for any info...

Just an observation which is more like a generalisation, but people who want just a PDA generally prefer the C1000 and people who want a mini laptop usually prefer the C3x00.

Apart from USB host the only diff beteen C860 and C1000 are CPU & battery. Or are there any other diff?

Yes there are ... C7xx,860 has ATI gfx card while C1000,3x00 is using internal PXA270 overlay framebuffer, next there are more keys on internal keyboard and of course in C3x00 models is main advantage internal CF slot where you have default 4/6GB microdrive but you can use it for any CF accessories (after break warranty :-))

I would rate 'battery' as the strongest reason to get a C1000/C3x00 over a C860.
Rather... battery age.
as Stu says:

Any C760/C860 you are going to find, will have a 2-year old battery, at least. Even a used C1000 is probably going to have a fresher one,
and I'd still advise buying a new unit to be safe. cpu, usb, keyboard, are all better with the newer models, but battery age will determine how much use you'll get out of it, until the Zaurus perishes.
(In general, batteries for newer models are electrically compatible with older models; but they are larger, and don't tend to fit-
so getting a new battery for an old unit may not be practicable)

The usb port gives me instant access to my usb 80 gig hard drive. I use my Z for work and it is important to back up my data somewhere besides the Z. This does it for me.

Using cresho's package of apps the SNES, NES, and Turbo Grafix 16 emulator works sweet. I wish a Playstation emu worked with Cacko's ROM but seems like it's only working with Xrom. Meanie can you confirm this?

Quite interesting. I didn´t think about it

I wouldn't say that is the strongest reason as you can buy batteries separately.
There also seems to be a design flaw in the 760/860. Not all, but I assume a small portion of those clamshells lose sound due to issues with the PC board. The newer clamshells have not shown any signs of this problem (though it took over a year for my 760 to have problems) so far.
