Title: How Do I See Shared Docs?
Post by: Capn_Fish on August 21, 2006, 02:34:11 pm
How can I see my desktop's shared documents on my zaurus with pdaXrom? Is there a "My Computer"-like app that I can use?

Thanks in advance.

rox-filer... just install Rox from the feed... but the 2nd thing you would need to do is mount your share...

Let me know if  you need assistance mounting that share...

I have ROX and I really like it. I have almost no idea how to mount the shared docs. If you could tell me how to mount them that would be great.

Thanks for your help.

mount -t smbfs //location/sharename /mnt/whereever

you will need to install the smb packages in the feed... you will need to pull them from i believe the beta 1 feed...

samba-common and smbclient I think

I have samba installed, but have some very noob questions. (networking really confuses me)
I have a win XP home machine.
mount -t smbfs //location/sharename /mnt/whereever

My machine name is mshome-p4
My workgroup is MSHOME
1. location, is that the machine name, or it's IP address?
2. Is the IP address of my windows machine the same as the one in the zaurus USB settings app? (192.168.129.201) or is it (192.168.0.1 as reported by windows ipconfig /all)
3. sharename, is that the same as my workgroup name? (MSHOME)
4. /mnt/whereever, I understand. (Wow, I actually got something)
5. Do I need to have the USB settings on my zaurus set to "Network"? (In other words, will storage mode interfere with samba)?

1. Yep
2. well it is the one reported by windows ipconfig /all but that is weird because usually 192.168.0.1 is your gateway... unless it is configured to 254.
3. well no your share name is what you shared the directory as
4. You already know this...
5. hmmmm... well if you have network access when plugged in via usb and the app is set to storage, you should be fine.

This is the Windoze machine's IP address, or the Windoze machine's name if you set that up in /etc/hosts.  It you added that entry to the hosts file, you can enter the name and it will resolve to the correct IP address.

EDIT:
I just noticed that your machines may not be on the same subnet, which might cause you some problems.  Are you doing this with USB networking (which I am not familiar with)?  Or are you using a wired or wireless NIC?  You may want to set the Zaurus to a 192.168.0.x address if you're going through a router.

see LinNeighborhood. GUI to connect to windows shares. its easier if you are connected via a real network, ie wifi or ethernet rather than the usb client cable, but it works also with some extra host mapping tweaks...

I don't have a router (yet)
I only have the ADSL "modem" that the phone company supplied. It is connected to my onboard 10/100 network with a cat5 cable.
I do have a network card and wifi card, but am just waiting to get a wifi setup.

If I use my network card with my Zaurus, I'll have to disconnect my desktop PC, to use it with my phone co box.
I got the network card for when I shut down my desktop PC in the summer.
I'll have to move my phone co. box and use the network card with it on my Zaurus.

I connect my zaurus through USB only, since I don't have a second hard wire connection to my phone co box, and I don't have wifi yet either.

I (surprisingly) have TCP/IP over USB working on my Cacko zaurus.  Took me almost 6 months to figure that one out.

Also, I'm not sure what a "shared folder" is on my winXP box
Is it the one in My Computer called "Shared Documents" ?
If that is the shared folder, it has a space in the name, and one of the smbmount commands I used, interpreted this name as an additional command or argument.
I'm not sure what it really did, but the space messed up the command.
I cannot rename that folder in windows either.

Thanks meanie, I wasn't sure how to setup LinNeighborhood.

actually, shared folders on winxp is just a folder without any security so any user on that same machine can access the files in that folder. each user has their own MyDocuments folder where all their files get saved by default. The shared folders is just another location where everyone can place their files and let other people on the same computer see those files (not that other people can't see the files in other people's MyDocuments directory if they were smart enough to look) but M$ tried to make is easier for the average dummy user.
so strictly speaking, only people on the same computer can access the shared folder unless you share it out, ie make it network accessible.
you need to use "shared documents" or shared/ documents if there is a space
but it is much easier just give it another name without a space so when you right click on properties on your shared documents folder, you can change the name of the share, so just remove the space and you can access it as shareddocuments from the z

oh by the way, did you know that in pdaXii13 you can just run the command usbnet
to setup tcp/ip over usb on your Z and it automatically is configured for ICS as well?
so on your windows box, all you need is enable ICS and you can access the internet from your z using tcp/ip over usb

Thanks for the explanation meanie.
My shared documents folder won't let me change it's name.
Everything under properties is grayed out. If I click it twice, slowly to try to rename it, I get a "dong" sound.
I heard some stuff on XP home is different than the pro version.
Should I just make a new folder and share it?
EDIT:
I just tried to share a new folder, and windows wants me to put any shared folder into the above mentioned "Shared Documents" folder, so I'm back to square one.

yeah, make a new folder (preferably without spaces in its name) and share it. much simpler

that didn't work, see above EDIT:
The sharing stuff is grayed out in any new folder.

yep, it's mine, I'm logged in as Bill.
I was never sure if I'm logged in admin, I did a test with a program called Belarc adviser.
Here is some details about users:

When using the above command, I get this:
configuring USB cable for networking...
...DNS is 127.0.0.1
...Gateway is 192.168.0.1
...Local IP for usb0 is 192.168.0.2
...reconfiguring network
usb cable is not plugged in

What does that mean? "usb cable is not plugged in" My cable is plugged all the way in and I know it works because I use it with storage mode in my pdaxii13 Zaurus, and my Palm and my Cacko Zaurus.

I tried this 3 times and I got the same results, so I unplugged my USB cable from my pdaxii13 Zaurus and plugged it into my Cacko Zaurus and went to this forum, in Opera with no problem. I'm logged in as Jon_J on my Cacko Zaurus right now, but am typing this on my desktop PC.
I do have ICS enabled in Windows, otherwise my Cacko Zaurus wouldn't be working online now.
