Hello All,
I have recently purchased a Zaurus 5600, and would like some advice from you Zaurus experts.
I am a researcher, so I spend a lot of time away from the office working on the road or at the library. Currently, I have a netgear wireless network card that is working well. I am also using the original ROM which came with my 5600.
My goal is to have the following capabilities:
1. samba or nfs mounting
2. ssh
3. terminal
4. a good browser
5. a good pdf reader
6. keyboard (i\'m leaning toward targus universal wireless keyboard)
7. emacs
8. VPN
9. a better set PIM programs (i am using the default ones that came with my Zaurus)
10.OCTAVE
11. LATEX?
12. suggestions (like a different ROM)?
I want to use this device to do some simple writing/editing of papers, writing of simple scipts to manage experiments, monitoring remote processes which are running on remote workstations, email, and simple web browsing. Unfortunately, I need a &*&(* VPN client to do nearly all of this. My University uses a Cisco VPN concentrator.
I thank you all in advance for any help I might receive.

I searched for VPN, Octave and Latex and got results for each. Hopefully that\'ll help.
As far as the rest, I recommend tkcRom. I\'ve tried all the 5600 rom\'s and it\'s my favorite. It has SSH installed, as well as a terminal and Opera 6. You can download a PDF Reader and I\'m not sure about the kb or emacs.
I have SSH and noMachine.com\'s NX Client installed on mine which seems to work nicely.
Enjoy

If you want the lastest version of Octave (2.1.50) I\'m afraid you\'ll have to move to a libc2.3 based ROM. If you can live with the older 2.0.17 then you\'ll be fine with your standard (or the tkc) ROM. Add in gnuplot if you want to plot stuff from Octave. Take a look at my web site linked from the killefiz Octave entry.
There\'s also R (basically an open source version of S) which may be of interest.

Thank you for this information. I have the octave and ssh installed and things seem to be working well.
I am having many problems with the VPN client (VPNC). It appears to hang after reading my vpnc.conf file. Is this the only vpn client compatable with cisco vpn?
