Title: Cell Ir Beta3 Help?
Post by: adf on September 04, 2006, 03:56:02 am
This page (http://mycusthelp.com/Voq/supportkbitem.asp?sSessionID=&Inc=134&sFilA=Category&sFilB=&sFilC=&FA=-1&FB=-1&FC=-1) has a nice howto on how to connect via windows on a laptop.

I followed the directions as far as seemed possible... putting in the init string, username and password

I try pppd -d.   a paatern of text types out, repeats a few times and stops/ crashin (locking up) the terminal--aterm or rxvt)

it seems that IR is simply not working, but I really can't tell.  I have the haunting feeling that I'm missing something obvious.

help? (yes, I searched the forum...and mostly found other people who coudn't connect or whose solutions seemed not to apply)

did you try "/etc/rc.d/init.d/irda start" first ?

no joy.  starting irda 1st certainly starts irda ( a good start lol), but pppd -d or pppd modem have the same result.....  string o symbols repeted then a locked term.

any other ideas?  there is also the usb option, but it seems dependant on a windows drdiver....

I have this working on my SL6000, and I discovered that I couldn't get it to work using ppp from the shell - for some reason I have to use the pppdialer app. On the command line everything appears to work until it stops just short of actually doing anything!

It's exactly the opposite of wireless etc which can't be configured with graphical tools - the only way this would work is to use the tools straight out of the box...

using the ppp dialer, I get:

(+cgdcont=1,"IP","cellular1wap,"",0,0^M)
expect (OK)
alarm
Failed
Connect script failed.

This isn't terribly useful to me-- I have no real idea if the phone isn't getting the ir signal, if I'm using a wrong APN. protocol, connect speed, etc.

Ideas on how to get more info??  (or how to make it work if anyone has a blinding flash of insight....?)

not yet... trying the pppdialer.  In theory, my nokia is coming back in the mail....

Put "debug" and "dump" in your ppp options file to get more info. By the looks of it, Chero's answer was closer than mine - the Zaurus isn't getting any response from the phone...

I guess I'll gove gnokii a shot then

edit:  suggestions about where I start with  gnokii?? gnokii --monitor?  --sndtmfstring?

I really have no clue here.  I'm pretty sure I don't want to talk to the todo list, though...

I also got this error when I tried to configure my Nolkia  6310 for GPRS over IrDA.
The workaround is as follows:
Configure the settings which you would give via AT+cgdcont directly in the phone (GPRS access point, APN or similar, just enter the string "cellular1wap" in the corresponding phone config dialog.). There are several "slots" for such configurations. If the first one is free, use that one.
Then, use only "ATZ" as the init string, and use the dial string *99***1# (where 1 is the number of that "slot", so use 2 if you used the second "slot" for example).

Seems as if the Nokia phones have some problem with thie cgdcont string.

Good luck!
daniel

ok.. that kinda did something... the Z seemed to occasionally "see" the phoine--though I think I might be wrong about how the phone contacts the isp.

anyway, here is the log from querying the modem in windows 2000. Maybe it will give someone a flash of insight?  So far, I'm still not getting the Z to connect.

Perhaps you've already tried this, but maybe there is a simple problem...

Windows:
Quote
09-13-2006 17:35:27.859 - Send: AT+cdcont=1,"IP","cellular1wap","",0,0<cr>
Zaurus:
Quote
(+cgdcont=1,"IP","cellular1wap,"",0,0^M)
... is missing the 'AT' at the start (Windows usually puts this in automatically, but mostly Linux/pppd just does exactly what you tell it). pppd times out waiting for a response because the phone won't respond to anything without an AT...

I also see you're missing a closing quote, but maybe that's just a typo?

Thanks!
Got it in windows (wrong APN)  that seems to have been a typo.... I had wondered about the AT.

I'll mess with it more on the Z now that I know I can connect with it.
Of course, on the Z it will have to be IR,I think.  It uses some proprietary windriver on usb.  Maybe it can be probed and deciphered??  I guess that can wait til I try ir on the Z.

written from windows connected via the cell--making progress.

I use my Nokia via USB with my Linux laptop, but no-go with the Z as yet due to the older kernel not having the USB stuff up to scratch. Probably a lot more likely with beta4 (for those who can run it...)

Here is what i get (ok, i copied a few attempts) Can anyone help me figure out why my connection is being terminated? I read on a mac forum that tcpip header compression can do something like this...Help?:

<snip>

sent [CCP ConfReq id=0x1 <deflate 15> <deflate(old#) 15> <bsd v1 15>]
sent [IPCP ConfReq id=0x1 <compress VJ 0f 01> <addr 0.0.0.0> <ms-dns1 0.0.0.0> <ms-dns3 0.0.0.0>]
rcvd [LCP ProtRej id=0x4 80 fd 01 01 00 0f 1a 04 78 00 18 04 78]
rcvd [LCP TermReq id=0x5]
LCP terminated by peer
sent [LCP TermAck id=0x5]
Connection terminated.

<snip>
The above lines are the guts of the problem. After successfully connecting and authenticating, protocol negotiation takes place. The first two lines above are your machine telling the remote one that you need various compression etc turned on. The rcvd lines are the remote machine rejecting the protocol negotiation and telling you to disconnect.

Normally a basic ppp modem connection (such as this) doesn't use any compression or extra settings - just straight out unencrypted and uncompressed data. What settings do you have in your /etc/ppp/options file? Or other ppp settings files?

From what I can see, you're 99% of the way there - just a matter of ppp configuration.

that's what I thought, too.

afaik I have no compresion turned on in ppp. My impression was that somehow the z was trying to do compression"  by default.  I'll poke around and post the settings.  Hopefully this is simple. Thanks for the help-- a little more, and I think I'll have it.

BTW maybe a pdaX cellphone wiki or howto might  be a good idea?

You could always post the contents of your /etc/ppp/options and /etc/ppp/peers/<xx> files so we can have a look.

By the time you get it working, you'll have all the info you need to add it to the wiki...

As you're using IR this should be an invalid option (if you invoke pppd manually you'll see an error). You should replace it with "nocrtscts".

Actually this works fine for me using IR - the mobile phone is surprisingly transparent when used as a modem.

I don't think you need the last two lines you talked about though (novj and the IP address), although the settings in peers/voq might take precedence anyway. All the other lines in options.ttyS0 look fine; what do the -ac, -pc, -vj options do?

You should be able to ignore the options.pptp file as it's not being used here.

in theory theay are switches that turn off various bits of compression. in practice they seem to do nothing at all...  possible inline with pppd they might have an effect.
The problem is, it looks ok ,but doesn't work

I was thinkinking thant this bit :
# Compression
# Turn off compression protocols we know won't be used
nobsdcomp
nodeflate

is the problem

see-- we still get:
sent [CCP ConfReq id=0x1 <deflate 15> <deflate(old#) 15> <bsd v1 15>]
sent [IPCP ConfReq id=0x1 <compress VJ 0f 01> <addr 0.0.0.0> <ms-dns1 0.0.0.0> <ms-dns3 0.0.0.0>]

right before the disconnect.

makes me think either this setting has no effect and should, or I am seeing it backwards and I should turn compression ON.

should this be pasted into the peers/voq stuff?

Good point - those settings aren't working because they're in the options file for pptp, not for voq. Judging by the output of ppp, you're probably right in thinking that adding nodeflate and nobsdcomp to the peers/voq file might just work...

The computer at the other end is deliberately disconnecting you (received TermReq). I am not sure if it has anything to do with the previous line or not - I wonder if that 'addr 0.0.0.0' is wrong? What settings do you have for DNS and DHCP?

Interestingly, I can connect in win2k.

I'll post the win2k ipconfig aand the Z settings this evening.

My isp wants me to buy a igher speed edge account for twice the price. the gsm disconnects if the server "thinks"  the connection isn't with the phone. --to put it vaguely and opaquely .  Since the win2k connection works, this shuold be surmountable.]  this is why the "zaurus" line just after the chap stuff struck me as ominous..... the name is maybe triggering something?

Definitely surmountable - I just meant that it is no longer an error (you're just trying to use settings that the other server doesn't agree to). Your /etc/ppp/chap-secrets file should only need the ISP user name and password, and a * for the server:

Code: [Select]
# client server  secret     IP address
  *
If it says 'zaurus' in there anywhere that could cause the problem, but since the output shows 'CHAP authentication succeeded', it seems like there's no problem here. You shouldn't need a 'name' entry anywhere in your config file.

i have nothin at all inchap-secrets..other than the commented stuff.

The reason I think it might possibly be a name thing is based on win behaviour.

If i try from a work winxp on which I have a username, I can't log in..though the software runs, and the box sees the phone as a modem

If i try on win2k from home wher i am Administrator--everything is a snap.

I guess what I'll do is enter the ipconfig  ip numbers in /peers/voq and see what happens.  i thnk though that some "zaurus" hostname ifs setting off a flag at the isp-- one that accepts something windowish.....

Well it says it's using CHAP, so you'll need a valid secret entry to authenticate yourself to the remote server (maybe you only have one in pap-secrets?)

PPP uses the hostname to authenticate - the end result being that basically you set this to your ISP user name, not your actual host name.

which hostname, set where?
in win2k I am sending no username or password (in fact the isp instructions for things like blackberries say not to) that I know of. I thought it might be on the sim card (as you see, I don't quite get how the phone is validated.

I can tell you that I am on win2k over the phone connect rigth now, though

That's interesting - Telecom NZ has a single user name and password that must be used for all mobile phone data connections just to get connected. They still charge by your phone account.

Have you tried setting the 'noauth' option so it doesn't try to authenticate at all? I doubt this will work though as the debug output you posted clearly shows the remote server asking for a name via CHAP. I think you definitely need an entry in chap-secrets. Do you have a set of instructions for your ISP/phone (even if for Windows - it might help)?

It would appear that changing phone won't help as there are no hardware issues, just configuration.

I put noauht in chap--it still passes the name Zaurus from someplace.

The isp insttructions say not to enter  a username or password, and in windows, I haven't.

It seems that the question is "what is it that the windows connection is doing that the zaurus cionnection is not?" right?  then what should i look for, and how? if anyone has an idea..

Actually the noauth option is for the remote machine - whoops. I can't see any options for not authenticating at this end...

I guess that zaurus is your actual hostname - this will be a last resort because there isn't a chap-secrets entry. I don't think that using a different phone will help because the same settings (and same remote server) apply. Maybe it is sending blank user name and password if none set in Windows.

Perhaps it isn't the auth after all then - have a look at the pppd man page (on another machine or via Google) and scan through the options you have set and what they mean. Do you have 'ms-dns' set? The zaurus seems to be asking for this just before it receives the remote term request, and you shouldn't need this (usepeerdns instead). Also perhaps try 'noip' which is supposed to help with buggy remote ipcp config...

thanks... I'll tinker for a bit and post in a few days. Hopefuly with a success story, or at least useful info (besides the price and availability of a cf gsm card in the us  )

edit:  a kind of off topic thought, but if i used a gsm card in my Z, then ran voip over that connection....  might it be possible to use that setup with something like vonage? ( I gather the skype thing isn't happening ) just something ai thought should be mentioned
