Any release notes so we'll know what new features/bug fixes to look forward to?

Who'll be the first to try this out? I'm quite happy with beta3 right now, there're no major show-stoppers and apart from a flaky bluetooth when doing obex transfers it pretty much does everything that I want (for the moment!)

Is it based beta3 or beta4 based? It would be better to wait one day more and write a bit more information.

Hey thats nice. Never expected a new version so soon. Thats great news.

I will try it later on today, no matter if it is for "extreme testers"  only or still based on beta3. A beta4 based release with bugfixes would be really nice though.

No matter how it works: Great work sashz!

Thank you!

Lol and I JUST got beta3 working pretty much how I like it.

Like somebody asked previously...is this for "extreme testers" or is it a somewhat-stable release?

Thanks,
Frank

Like nearly everyone else, I'm on a nicely setup beta3.  Beta4 made me nervous . in fact i gave up on pdaXrom for most of the summer.   I realize that you warned us that beta4 was an early release and for extreme testing only. Still, I think i want to know more about whatI'm getting into before i trash a perfectly good beta3 setup.

What is it?
edit: I take it based on the downloads that it is a uboot 2.6 release....

video optimizations?

4gig sd card support?

what is still a problem?

settings widgets working?

I really like pdaXrom, and I have been looking forward to a solid uboot/2.6 release.  is this it?  I've also been looking forward to a rerolled patched up beta3 (so new installs won't take quite so much tweaking). Is that what this is?  I fear another Beta4 experience.  is it likley to be one of those?

Oh wow! Great news!

Sashz: I see you now have a release for 'sl-cxx00' - does that include the c3000? Strictly speaking it should do but I know in the past pdaX was just released for all the other cxx00 models except c3000.

Hopefully the c3k is no longer a second class machine in the pdaXrom world!

EDIT: Even worse, looks like it could be just for Akita. Tell me I'm wrong (truthfully!) please!

EDIT2: I'm a bit more hopeful now as it would seem this new cxx00 release installs on the c3200.

Apart from the possibility of c3000 support I'm also very curious to see if any progress has been made with the cxx00 video driver. Of course that would probably be no use unless mplayer knows how to make use of it.

Hi Sashz, I have some complaints, with the hope to be usefull.

I bought my Zaurus, the SL-C860, because I knew of pdaXrom.
PdaXrom has been an awesome project, fast and active, and I have been very happy with every release I tried.
Then came beta1 and so on.

I have to undestand if you all, developers, have the will to continue development not only for newer Zauruses, but also for mine. You made me used to amazing releases; now every release is a step more behind for my 860, since everyone is developing and compiling for the last betas while older "stable" revisions are outdated.

I think that feeling the need to change my zaurus for one of the newest would be a defeat for the project.
Maybe I'm wrong, and also Cxx00 releases aren't that stable these days... but I read posts of users so happy of their latest beta...

Maybe the problem is that you haven't a 860 or 760 to test releases on?
Really, I don't want to bother you... you all are hard working, and I didn't either donate a cent till now. I just want to know some more about project status and future.

Thank you, I'll keep trying releases hoping to make my Zaurus a bit productive.

Bye

I think it is a little early for that to be decided since it has only been out for less then a day.

Based on the fact that [a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=21497]someone has already bricked their Z installing it[/url]; I would say it may not be stable.

Hopefully, someone proves me wrong on this.

It looks nicer... but still holds the same bugs that I noticed in beta4...  I will work on some fixes for the small things I noticed... and post back with anything I find... my main thing is working on some of the settings apps... going to test out the whole "fltk" thing... then XFCE!

Any C3000 owner had the balls to try installing this yet to see if its possible?

Anyone tried mplayer or can report on the state of the cxx00 video driver?

excellent work!  I've noticed a few bugs (using C750):

- no cardctl for switching wifi schemes
- no audio!
- menu button does not work, have to use stylus
- some menu pixels are displayed "off screen"
- everything displayed on screen is "ghosted"

These all present in beta4 as well as r121, but were not present in beta2.  (never got around to trying beta3)

Very fast!!!!
but the usbfunction.py doesn't start, try to open /proc/deviceinfo/product, that doesn't exist, so i edited the file to override the machine autodetection.

actual problem.. i can't use my planex gw-cf11x, i tried the patches used in beta4 but no luck.

Great work Sashz!

I would have tried it right away if I still can use my 7500C. Right now I'm waiting for a solution or a new Flash chip.

I hope the APM works alright in this release.

I will try the new Cxx00 release later.

Hi iczer3,

Your C860 has the same apm issue as my 7500C. I guess the reason why anunakin says it's OK is because he uses C3100, which at least has some different hardware than C7x0.

I'm just thinking about the possible ways to fix this issue:

1. We can ask Sashz to modify his code or the configuration for C7x0 and release another build. (But Sashz needs to find out what caused the problem)

2. Since the apm in OZ/GPE is working pretty well, can we borrow something from it's rom? My knowledge doesn't allow me to do that by myself now. But someone might be able to do that. I think the apm is a very essential part for pdaXrom. (Right now if I unplug my 7500 it will shut off right away. The testing guys in my company will call it a "Lines down" level 0 defect).

BTW, has anyone tried to build pdaXrom using pdaX86 LiveCD and the pdaXrom builder? I found that it's a very time consuming process and takes up a lot of disk space. But I suppose anyone can use that to build his own pdaXrom with his own fixes and sumbit to Sashz for review.

Anyway, I really hope the apm and the sound issues can be fixed for C7x0 soon.

Keep up the good work Sashz!

Hi All,
I installed 121 with no issues on C1000.
The main thing for me at this point is the wireless config is grey'd out.
I noticed that the hostap drives are not installed.

Is something else being used for the wireless config?
Anyone have any luck getting it working?

Thanks.

Symbol Spectrum24 Firmware (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=2798)

Copy these to CF/SD

Code: [Select]
# mkdir -p /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware

Unplug and plug back in...

Just flashed u-boot and r121 on my C760 (was KathrinRC12); here are some comments:

u-boot
- Flashing u-boot is OK, but after, there is screen is flickering. Did not bother to fix it, so, can't say more about this.
- In order to boot after flashing the bootloader, i had to remove power sources (alim AND battery) and plug AC while holding "OK" for a few seconds.
- Had some problems with CF card: unable to read, "df -h" segfaults, ... Had to boot without the CF, then plug it, copy CF content to a SD and run autoboot.sh manually. This worked, but could be related to the card formatting.
- After flashing, the Zaurus didn't reboot. Had to unplug the power.

r121
- / is still not mounted noatime in fstab. This is bad.
- Keymap is broken: ctrl, alt, mail, home and menu doesn't work.
- When loading X then exiting, console is really weird.
- KR9 seemed faster to me.

I will report other issues soon

I've tried the new beta on my C3000, still doesn't work, I flashed the first segment holding ok, then selecting 4, and cf for the card i had it on. Once this finished it said Uboot and Emergency system are installed, hold ok to enter emergency system. After this i couldn't get it to boot, tried holding ok for 20 sec like the doc's said, and every other combination i could think of. I've flashed back to the sharp bootloader for now, but if someone can give me a push of what needs to be done to make it work on my c3000 i'll gladly do some work.

r121 works on my C3100, but there are a few problems.

I can't get XFCE4 to work, it gives me errors regarding the panel, never had these problems with beta3.

The xmodmap files are all the same, for the C700, so I can't use fn for right clicking inside X...

More to come.

In Beta 4 and rc121 the means of determining the device and xmodmap to load is done different due the device name being different and not being located in the same place (now in /proc/cpuinfo)
(Ex. Akita instead of C1000)

You will need to edit your xinitrc.xfce4 files to look for device name the same way it does in your .xinitrc file (sym link)

Ps I will be working on getting it up and running good after I finish debugging rc121

On previous betas, the correct xmodmap file was akita.xmodmap in /etc/X11/kb.

Now the file is located at /etc/X11/kb/Akita/xmodmap

However, even if I try to load that, I still can't get the keyboard to function as it should...

Ok, the xmodmap loads and works properly now.

XFCE gives me these errors:

1)Whenever I click on quit in the menu or the icon on the panel, X crashes back to the console, the error given is:

'The application 'xfce-mcs-manager' lost its connection to the display 0:0'

2)After I get dumped back to the console, I can see many errors:

"(xfce4-menu-plugin:XXXXXX): Gtk-WARNING: **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "xfce",

I have everything installed correctly (gtk related libs etc.)... What could be the problem?

excellent work!  I've noticed a few bugs (using C750):

- no cardctl for switching wifi schemes
- no audio!
- menu button does not work, have to use stylus
- some menu pixels are displayed "off screen"
- everything displayed on screen is "ghosted"

These all present in beta4 as well as r121, but were not present in beta2.  (never got around to trying beta3)
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=142019\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
1- Yaeh it is because new Kernel and using udev now
2- Audio is working for me!
3- OK it can be patched
4- Here it is OK!

my Z is a SL-C3100

1. Udev?  Is there a way to get wifi & switching between networks working then, with the current beta?
2. You're lucky!  I miss my audio so much.  Anyone else experiencing this? C750
3,4,5. I can expect this in a future release?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=142148\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Try go to SHELL and load alsamixer , look for MUTED audio channels and unmute it... do it while playing somethink with mplayer....
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=142175\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Hi,

I already knew about alsamixer, it is the same "problem" as in Beta4. But here I noticed something else: When I was using Beta4 I didn't have to change the settings of mplayer. Here mplayer said "Can't open eSound Output Plugin". I changed it to "ALSA 1.2.10 output plugin" and after unmuting the audio channel it works fine now.

Audio is essential for me, I don't want to carry around an MP3-player while I have my Z with me anyway.

Hi there,

just installed r121 to my C860. I found that the apm for 860 is

Can anyone help ?

On my C860 I have the same problem. The charging light remains off. When the Z is "switched on" the battery monitor applet indicates charging but I don't know if it is really doing anything??

Any fixes to that problem so far?

that's not the only problem on 860.

mapping in aterm is wrong, xterm doesn't work at all, and when you leave X mapping is not working anymore.
Wifi is buggy, touchscreen input sometimes lags or lose precision (when you use the on-screen keyboard you press a key and another one is actually pressed, while the cursor is far away from that...). Charging light turns off after a few seconds even if not completely charged. Not usable, actually, even for easy tasks.

2devs: Did you know of all these bugs? Have you an 860 to work on? It looks like you're working only on xx00. Maybe our bug-reportings about 860 aren't that good. Let us know about it.

Hi folks,

sorry, I was a bit fast to complain on charging. I don't know what happened, but now charging on my C860 seems to work. After I unplugged power it started to charge and since then it works fine (stopping when it is full, restarting correctly).

Apart from WiFi, which I was not able to test yet, everything so far works fine for me! This version seems much better than Beta4 which was already the best one so far.

- Backlight control works fine now
- Installation was smooth
- Installation of apps is 100% accurate
- It seems even faster than Beta4!

This is a really amazing release!

Is there any possibility to perform a NAND-RESTORE with this version? (which is essential for switching between versions during the long period of finetuning!)
I tried SD and CF with FAT. NAND-Backup works fine but NAND-Restore always ends up with "format error". The old Beta3-Nand-Backup restores without problems.
Any experiences so far?

Hi,

as I said: no problems so far (I'm still searching for the right mouse button, FN+"mouse click" does not work??).

Concerning charging:
I unplugged power and after a few seconds the icon changed from green "charging" to blue "battery indicator". After a few seconds I plugged power again and the charging light went on plus the icon changed to green "charging" again.
Charging works fine now. Charging lamp goes off when full which was not the case in Beta1.

All I did on installation was:

- install new u-boot
- install new release
- install rox, gnumeric, kdepimpi, planner, vim and all depending packages
- change desktop to rox
- applied bugfix to get brightness-keys to work (see [a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=20563]https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=20563[/url] for details)

WiFi I will test today.

Cheers, Jan

ok, now try this:

open Aterm
write "xterm" and enter
try to write something in xterm - if you see strange characters that's a problem
press CTRL+C in Aterm to close xterm - if you see strange characters instead of xterm closing, that's a problem
now exit from X (menu, exit, ok)
try to press "a" - if you cannot enter the "a" character, that's a problem

Hi! all!!

What's nice advice for me!
I use r121 on C860, but poweroff/on didn't work fine.

apm in OZ/GPE works fine,  so I checked apm.
Its version of OZ/GPI is v3.2.2, but the one of pdaXrom is v3.2.1!!

I built latest apm package, v3.2.2-8, for pdaXrom and updated on my Z.
Then poweroff/on works better than before!!

I have been trying poweroff/on many times since apm was updated, but never failed!!

You can download my apm ipk from this URL below.
If you have some problem with apm, you might become happy by using it.

[a href=\"http://comomo.shacknet.nu/files/pdaxrom/r121/feed/apm_3.2.2-8_armv5tel.ipk]http://comomo.shacknet.nu/files/pdaxrom/r1...-8_armv5tel.ipk[/url]
(Sorry, this web is Japanese only, but no problem to download it.)

You can overwrite the original apm package with it by using "ipkg install" command.

Enjoy!!

I have exactly the same issue in Beta4, which didn't happen with the previous version from Beta 3 backward. I did raise the issue but no one ever reply, so I assume that was  only my issue then.

When I plug my Symbol Spectrum24 wifi card, the light blinks.
However I can't connect to the net.
My wifi router is set to DHCP, no wep key, ESSID airlinkplus.
I used these 2 scripts:
eth0.up
Code: [Select]
#!/bin/bash
ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.5 up
route add default gw 192.168.0.1
echo "nameserver 192.168.0.1" > /etc/resolv.conf
ifconfig eth0
and wlan0.up
Code: [Select]
#!/bin/sh
ifconfig wlan0 down
iwconfig wlan0 essid airlinkplus mode managed
ifconfig wlan0 192.168.0.5 up
route add default gw 192.168.0.1
echo "nameserver 192.168.0.1" > /etc/resolv.conf
ifconfig wlan0
thanks to anunakin
Then I did
Code: [Select]
# sh eth0.up
eth0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:A0:F8:B4:58:7D
          inet addr:192.168.0.5  Bcast:192.168.0.255  Mask:255.255.255.0

          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:0 (0.0 b)  TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)
          Interrupt:137
and
Code: [Select]
# sh wlan0.up
wlan0: unknown interface: No such device
Error for wireless request "Set ESSID" (8B1A) :

SIOCSIFADDR: No such device

I don't know much about wifi just that it worked under beta1.
To access my router, I use 192.168.1.1 in my browser.

Thanks

Do the date/time settings survive a reboot and is the hwclock command included?
Beta4 always resets the time to the epoch on reboot.

My SD card has 2 partitions(vfat and ext2)

Hi scoutme,

you are right. Not everything is 100%. There is still a configuration issue in xterm and the annoying keyboard problem after exit from X.
You con use "FN"-"a" to enter the "a" character in console.
Seems I got used to the smaller problems - I don't even notice them anymore

Post by: Martin on September 30, 2006, 10:57:12 am
Hi scoutsme, Hi Sash, Hi Laze, Hi everyone :-)

I am willing to test the new release and I will be very happy to do it, but I have the same problems with installing u-boot ... reading Howto install, many threads of the forum :-(

But evrytime the same problems with my c860 and many different CF / SD Cards :-( ... only getting blinking yellow / green lights and nothing happens ... NAND Backup / Restore with these cards works well!

I am really sad because I love pdaXrom ... now remaining to Beta2 for works very fine ... using NAND restore ...

C+M Menu gives me Ok usinf NAND erase and Nand Full Testing, but no possibility to install u-boot and new pdaxrom r121 ...

Does anybody have an idea to help me install for testing? Any chance to get a NANDbackup from fresh installed c860 (with u-boot and r121)?

THX

ok... with the spectrum wifi card... it registers as eth0...
so try this...

**eth0.up**
Code: [Select]
#!/bin/sh
ifconfig eth0 up
iwconfig eth0 essid airlinkplus mode managed
dhcpcd
sleep 5
ifconfig eth0

Code: [Select]
# sh eth0.up

Oh and note... you don't need to run both scripts only 1 or the other... in this case run the one I have above...

After that runs when ifconfig should show you your ip! Surf away!

Hi,
With this script and the firmware update posted earlier. I now have my c1000 online.
Great news!!..

I do have one question though, what the command for it to find "any" wireless AP, not just the ones where I know the essid.

Thanks again Late.

Here's what worked out with my C860:

Put uboot files on cf.  remove power and battery, replace both.  Hold down 'ok' while booting, and it installs uboot.  It says it's rebooting, and fails to do so.

The unit will now no longer turn on, power on with 'ok' pressed etc dead, plug in power and power light stays off.

Put 121 ROM files on CF and slot in.  Remove power and battery.  Hold down 'OK' and plug in power, KEEP 'OK' held down for 12 seconds, and emergency rom fires up, offers to 'install or boot emergency - y/n' (this should either NOT be 'y/n' or question should be reworded).  Press 'y' and it installs 121 ROM successfully.  When it reboots, pull power cord, reinstert battery.

Normal power-on now boots 121 ROM.

Just in case someone wants to try on a C860 and can't get this working, you are welcome to try the NAND backup I just made after installing and booting.  I told it to recalibrate touchscreen after restart, shut down, and backed up, so it should boot fine and require calibration if you restore this NAND backup on a C860.  [a href=\"http://myzaur.us/pdaxr121c860bak.tar.gz]http://myzaur.us/pdaxr121c860bak.tar.gz[/url]

Dear InSearchOf,

I have made further investigation on r121 with 860. If you do
cat /proc/apm  most of the time it shows 5% and battery critical.
But, on some rare cases, the battery is on 45% which is correct.
When the battery is at 45% and I insert charger the battery will charge.
When the battery is at 5% (most of the time) and I insert charger it
will not charge.

BR,

Felix.

Unfortunately it seems, from my previous experiences and reading around here, that NAND backups of the more recent pdaXroms (at least on x60 Zauri) are unusable.  My apologies, I didn't actually try to restore the backup myself.

Here's my observations so far on my C860 for r121:

'up arrow' still broken in MC (strangely, it effects combined 'block on' and up within mc editor) as well as ctrl and alt.

xterm unable to open font '-misc-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed--13-120-75-75-c-60-iso10646-1'

After look'n'feel changes desktop doesn't restart

taskbar skinning and size changes are ignored

ctrl-alt-backspace mapping to kill xserver fails

After dropping from X, console is mangled in random ways

Before entering X, console works perfectly, including up-arrow in mc

power button works from console

backlight flashing as power drains.  It seems to hit thresholds where it reduces backlight to save battery, then brightens 1/4 second later when it decides the battery has more to give.  Usually flashes for 5-10 seconds

Socket WiFi useless  "cannot find firmware: symbol_sp24t_prim_fw"

Ambicom WiFi useless

BT fails - "can't get DUN info"

Backlight stays on when clamshell closed

Menus flow off bottom of screen

A battery (any of three I've tried, two bl06 and one bl08) that the charger considers fully charged (if reinserted after sitting for 30 minutes the charger still considers it full, and stops charging right away)  registers as 75% - 83% via apm and battery applet. 5-10 minutes later with no CF card inserted and backlight less than full on and APM tells me the battery is already down to 50% range.

I'll post these points on the bugtracker at pdaxrom.org when I get a chance.

More notes:

iptables is broken.  Seems that ip_tables is neither compiled into kernel NOR included as a module.  (although supporting netfilter modules are present, like ip_conntrack connection tracking - yes I've install iptables and iproute2 ipks - like 'mc', I can't live without those tools - they've allowed me to use my Z as a wireless router in the past, when my DSL was down and I routed my home network through the Z and out my cell via IRDA)

'hcitool dev' finds no devices with my billionton bluetooth.  If I dig about I find dmesg reporting it at ttyS0 when inserted.  /etc/bluetooth/bt-uart.conf has an entry  "Compact Flash", "Bluetooth Card","","":/dev/ttyS3 bcsp:/dev/ttyS3 baud_base 921600 that almost matches.  When I change that entry to ttyS0 both places, however, it still fails to recognize the card.

Pointer is very 'jittery' - for example trying to tap the 'X' to close xmms and even with the stylus perfectly centered in the X, and the cursor ALSO perfectly centered in the X, it's hit or miss whether it actually clicks the X or tries to drag the window or hits the rollup widget.    This jitteriness is the likely cause of the problem where tapping on ANY button regardless of size will often NOT actually click the button - the UI seems to consider it a mouse movement instead of a button click.

Ctrl and Alt are broken everywhere, not just MC.  Alt-Tab does nothing except 'tab' if the focused window allows 'tab'.  Ctrl displays "0~" on a console, while Alt displays "1~".

When first starting X, the X server fires up in landscape mode (matching current screen orientation), but before actually doing anything except display grey startup background and cursor 'X', it changes to portrait mode.  Then it starts the taskbar, populates it, THEN returns to Landscape.

Display DOES shut off /sometimes/ when I close clamshell.  I've not figured out any pattern yet to identify why it fails sometimes.

My bl08 battery has been in my C860 for about 45 minutes uptime right now.  Fully charged when inserted, apm reported it as 75%.  After 30 minutes, it's STILL reporting it at 75%.  At 45 minutes it's registering 83%?!? with no change in usage or devices.  Something is definitely wonky in apmland.

'del' doesn't work - fn+bs just inserts a tilde.  (Related to this, it would be really REALLY  helpful if we could define the FN+ key combos as well - for instance, I have NEVER used fn+1 through fn+0, but several times a day I wish I had function keys.  I'd be thrilled if I could map 'FN+1' to send 'F1' keypresses, etc.

I went back to the stable beta3. For me this is the most serious problem: There is no working NAND-backup function with this version (with all uboot versions?? I don't know). You can Nand backup but the NAND restore fails.   So any major problem you run into during tuning the system leads to startup from the beginning or at least to very time consuming step by step backups and new installs.
I really hope the following versions will allow NAND backups again.

For me this is enough for me to consider leaving this release for now, need wifi working (I've a Socket LP Wifi CF Card) amongst other things.

Maybe someone can come up with some backup and restore scripts to back up config files, etc so you don't have to start over quite so much? shouldn't be too hard to adapt something from another Linux distro perhaps?

I have pretty much got Beta3 running how I want it, but I just cannot stop the itch of wanting to try out 1.1.0r121.

The two main things stopping me are what seems to be a very complicated install process compared with the older betas and the lack of working NAND backup.

I am wondering if there are any screenshots of the new release or any list of the features as compared to beta3?

Just tried to follow this to get it to install.

U-boot/emergency seems to install fine.

I put then the 121 ROM files onto the CF card, and boot it up, it doesn't give me the 'install or boot emergency - y/n', just a sh prompt.

If I boot it up with the CF card plugged in, when its got to that point, if I then try to acess the CF card, the 860 locks up.

If I boot it up without the CF card plugged in, then I get dropped again tot he prompt,  but it doesn't lock if I then try to access the CF card.

Am I doing something wrong here?

I had a similar problem when I tried the previous beta - uboot install had a problem and wasn't able to use CF.  I was able to install from SD however, by putting the 121 ROM files on my 256mb SD and firing up uboot.  It won't give you the 'install or boot' prompt unless it finds the required files on CF or SD for installing the ROM, so the lack of that message is just a symptom of the CF problem.

If you have a suitably large SD then try that approach.  Otherwise try downloading and unzipping the uboot package again and reinstall it.  You might also try reformatting the CF card - doing so found an error on one of my cards and mapped around it - that error probably caused my CF install problems.

excellent work!  I've noticed a few bugs (using C750):

- no cardctl for switching wifi schemes
- no audio!
- menu button does not work, have to use stylus
- some menu pixels are displayed "off screen"
- everything displayed on screen is "ghosted"

These all present in beta4 as well as r121, but were not present in beta2.  (never got around to trying beta3)
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=142019\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
1- Yaeh it is because new Kernel and using udev now
2- Audio is working for me!
3- OK it can be patched
4- Here it is OK!

my Z is a SL-C3100

1. Udev?  Is there a way to get wifi & switching between networks working then, with the current beta?
2. You're lucky!  I miss my audio so much.  Anyone else experiencing this? C750
3,4,5. I can expect this in a future release?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=142148\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Try go to SHELL and load alsamixer , look for MUTED audio channels and unmute it... do it while playing somethink with mplayer....
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=142175\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Hi,

I already knew about alsamixer, it is the same "problem" as in Beta4. But here I noticed something else: When I was using Beta4 I didn't have to change the settings of mplayer. Here mplayer said "Can't open eSound Output Plugin". I changed it to "ALSA 1.2.10 output plugin" and after unmuting the audio channel it works fine now.

Audio is essential for me, I don't want to carry around an MP3-player while I have my Z with me anyway.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=142220\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Thanks so much, my audio is working again.  I must note that I couldn't run alsamixer from rxvt.  I had to run xterm, and all the text is garbled as hell.  I figured it out though..

Still very annoyed not having wifi.  Is there something I'm missing here?  There's no cardctl, no way to use a profile.  If I create a profile and save it, it isn't actually saved or used...

Another thing that drives me crazy, is how there's ghosting and flickering that I never experienced in releases previous to beta 4 and r121.  I went through the COM & LCD configuration, adjusted values.. but it's still ghosted/flickering.

Also noticing that there's extremely high CPU utilization.  If I play music, and try to even open a terminal, the unit is sloooooow and the music will skip a couple times.  Again, didn't experience this in previous releases..

I'm really sorry I upgraded from beta2.

I use the scripts provided by anunakin found [a href=\"http://www.pdaxrom.org/node/121]Here[/url]. They need editied and then to switch "profiles", I just run a different script. I found it to be much qucker than the old cardctl scheme mechanism.

Hope this helps.

Just tried the zgcc.img from the r121 feed and got this upon mounting:
Code: [Select]
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop0, missing codepage, or too many mounted file systems
Pass -t cramfs to mount doesn't help.
The older file in the Beta4 feed is working.

I am using a c860 and would like to go back to Beta3. How? I don't know how to reflash now I have uboot going. If I hold down the OK button on reboot I get the emergency system but it doesn't offer to install anything, I just get the sh prompt. My Beta 3 install files are on an SD card.

Oh, and doing a NAND restore doesn't seem to work, as I hold down M +D for ages and nothing happens, and if I put in the battery (switch locked or unlocked) or attach the power lead the Z fires up as usual, whether I continue to hold down the keys or not.

Thanks!

If I found someone with a NAND backup of beta3 on a C750, would I be able to apply it to my Zaurus?  Is it just as easy to go the japanese route and then beta3?  I'm sorry, I've just had enough of 121.

I just installed r121 on my 860. A bit of a pain getting here, but it's got some nice stuff. I managed to get my sound working after xmms gave me the 'Cannot load esound output plugin' error by first installing the esound package from the main feed, and then running alsamixer & making sure both the 'Output Mixer Hifi Playback Swit' and the 'Output Mixer Line Bypass' are NOT muted.

As well, I found that unless I turned the 'Speaker Function' to off, it would play on the speaker as well as the headphones. I guess I'll have to turn that back on if I actually want to use the speaker (I assume for alarms). I'll have to do some more testing.

Does anyone know where alsamixer savaes it's settings? I'd definitely like to back that file up!!

Still trying to get back from 121 to Beta 3 (well, anything really). Nand restore just doesn't work - I don't even get the diagnostic menu.

Does this really mean I'm stuck with this ROM?

No you are not stuck... you will just have to work at getting into the DM...

I have no trouble at all getting into the Diag Menu on my c1000 I notice most cxxx users complain about getting into it but it must be a device specific issue... I would type up the steps to getting into it... but it has been post so many times I'm not going to waste my time...

Thanks!

Try Fn+D+M instead of just D+M.  Restore to an older/original ROM image, then install Beta.  Alternately, I seem to recall someone posted instructions somewhere in the forum here about installing earler Betas via uboot.

How did this work out?  Did you try, and were you successful?  As I'd said, when I tried Beta4 I had problems with uboot barfing on CF, although when I installed uboot for the R121 install, it's happy with CF.

FWIW I've gone back to beta2 on my 860. The biggest thing 'scaring' me off r121 is the non-functioning NAND restore. I have two saved images, a fresh install & a slightly tweaked one, neither of which I was able to restore to. I'll lurk & see if any suggestions arise & will be more than willing to test them out. thks

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=141934\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

A question for everyone that has r121 working on an sl-c3200.  Does you Z come up with the microdrive mounted as the cf?  I've got beta2 running on my sl-c3000 and it runs great, no problems that I can't work around, but it mounts the microdrive the way you would expect as /.   Shouldn't this be the case in r121?  I've tried building it the 'Manual' way as stated earlier in the thread, and from an SD card.  The SD card install works great and seems to install smoothly, whereas the manual method using the CF card displays a ton of errors.

In regard to the microdrive mounting as /mnt/cf, is this expected?  Has anyone else seen this?

Thanks,
Jason

I still can't get my Symbol Spectrum24 working!

I downloaded the firmware using the previously supplied link and copied it to my (newly created) /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware directory.

pdaXrom responds to my Spectrum24 just it did without the firmware.

To wit - when I plug the card in, I can see it in the (little card manager app on the taskbar, whatever it's called) - it shows up as "Symbol Tech?ologies LA4111 Spectrum24 Wireless LAN PC Card 1.00" The little LED on the card never lights up, even for a moment, though, and no eth0 is created. dmesg says -

pccard: PCMCIA card inserted into slot 0
pcmcia: registering new device pcmcia0.0

When I remove the card, dmesg says -

pccard: card ejected from slot 0

With the older versions of the ROM, I was accustomed to calling "/etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia restart" - with this version, there is no pcmcia script I could find, so I restarted the whole system. The behavior is unchanged.

Can someone please help me figure this out?

At last NAND restore...

Quote
Fn+D+M *will* work, flashing cannot overwrite it as it is in P2ROM.

Take the battery out and unplug the AC. Hold down Fn+D+M, insert the AC, then KEEP HOLDING Fn+D+M. It will take anywhere from 5-20 seconds before anything happens, then it will boot into the diag menu. Put the battery back and lock it in.

Thank you perlun.

I'm going to leave r121 until some of its little annoyances are sorted. But I'm definitely at the lower end of the learning curve.

Nope I didn't give it a try in the end, been too busy recently. I may do at some point, but for now Cacko will stay on it as it works well enough for my needs presently (which keep changing depending on what I'm doing).

I'm keeping an eye on this thread though and the bugtracker. If the person who managed to get r121 to NAND restore posts how they managed it I'd be very interested as I've tended to get a ROM installed, set up and configured and then use NAND backup/restore from time to time.

My next question then has to be why make us go to uboot if that is the case. Especially since most of us only boot up once and then just suspend. I'm obviously missing something here. I'm sure that most of us understand that we are not using a Zaurus because of it's lightening speed. I'm just curious and wouldn't mind seeing something on booting from other than the built in flash. Thanks.

Well he didnt create uboot... he decided to implement u-boot into his rom... U-boot fits in the same boat as Lilo... Syslinux... and Grub... just a variation of these..

And U-Boot *WILL* work with booting from alternate mediums... but it is just that no one that I know of... has configured uboot to boot from an external/internal cf... or SD... on a Z

though back to some earlier questions....
It seems like it would make a lot more sense to  boot in maybe a distributed sort of way.  Maybe use the internal flash as a / partition and put /user and /home and /var on other media?  I admit some addiotnal mapping and driver info might have to be at the / but it seems like a kinda obvious solution.....

It isn't that I have a big problem with how things are working at the present time, it just seems that the internal flash is small and at the present time I am having difficulty putting applications elsewhere. The 3100 has a harddrive which in reality I have never really used for anything except some limited storage. I have in the past loaded some applications to the harddrive but am having difficulty with r121. Thanks for the responses to my questions.

If you are in the mood to see how running off the HD goes, give OZ a spin.
My impression from my last run on OZ this summer was that for possibly psychological reasons i felt a need to do something with the internal flash, but that running the system off the internal hd worked pretty well. It was certainly quicker than I had expected it to be.

Anyway, as I said, it may be a personal neurosis, but I'd really like to see a sane partition scheme that uses the flah and the hd or the flash and *some* medium in combination (without ipkg-link weirdness) that made use of the speed of the internal flash, but didn't write to it much, and made use of the size and writeability of the hd (or size and comparative disposability of a flash card).

Well isn't this interesting....installed OZ gpe and everything I plug into my Z now works without any fiddling and I'm booting off the microdrive. Still some minor difficulties with partitions 2 and 3 but so far so good. I hadn't tried any other rom except pdaxrom to this point. Thanks.

welcome.

Any ideas on meaningful partition schemes??

Does anybody try 4Gb SD with 1.1.0r121?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=144381\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Just installed r121.  I noticed the automounter didn't connect to the 4Gb SD card however when I looked at

#dmesg

it noticed the mmcblk0

so I mounted it to /mnt/card and was successful.

I did jump the gun though  .... As soon as I loaded the ROM I installed the SD > 1G IPK from cresho.  Needless to say it works great.

it had nothing to do with THAT driver since it is a kernel model fo 2.4.20
r121 uses 2.6.x kernel which has build in support for large sd cards.

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=144029\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

it seems to be a squashfs

I have a script doing :
Code: [Select]
losetup /dev/loop0 /home/root/zgcc-3.4.6.img
mount /dev/loop0 /opt/native/arm/3.4.6-xscale-softvfp -t squashfs

and I could compile the latest xarchiver natively.

decided to try r121
 instructions are fine, etc.

1st problem:
accidentally tapped the screen during calibration--no recalibrate giu app?

how do I recalibrate (actually I am going to reflash, but this sort of thing maybe should be easy?)

quick question (may have been answered many time before, anyway...): what's preventing Tosa rom to advance beyond beta1?

there is a file called pointercal under /etc
remove it and next time you boot up, it will make you to recalibrate

thanks... I was pretty sure there was something along those lines...but reflashing seemed quicker than poking around.

a side note....  you (I think) mentioned that we have uboot largely because sashz nuked his bootloader?  I seemed to have done something along those lines playing with swapd (latest) that I compiled on Beta3. It caused some weird hangups and then just shut me out of the Z...lost diagnostics after trying Zaurus test--no power light, just a blinking hd light if I tried D&M.  Uboot suddenly made life a whole lot easier

Tell me this is something simple. I have a great fondness for gui package managers.

then what gets beta1 done for Tosa in the first place? Are you suggesting nothing stops Tosa user to try newer beta except for a brave soul (i.e. there's no hardware limitations built into the newer betas)?

I think you might have to build it for a tosa? there are some distinct hardware differences... certainly the kernel and some modules would have to be built..afterwhich maybe the 7x0-860 feed might work if you stayed away from the ati video stuff.

I was thinking that maybe some of the tisastuff had been done "blind"

have you looked at the pdaxrom builder?  does it have stuff to build for tosa?

Well adf to answer your question... there isn't a build set currently put together for a tosa under rc121... but I think with some time an effort you could prolly put together to right combinations under ptxdist to get it work with uboot... I dont know if just including the config settings for initrd will do the trick on not...

PS. Did I mention this is post # 500 for me... oh yea... I did... :-)

Oh, thanks for clarifying this!
But how come the zgcc changes format (cramfs -> squashfs) silently but the documentation is not updated?

I will make the needed changes to the site... But, I do remeber there being something in the boot up scripts to mount this image if it is placed in t he correct place... I will see if I can find it... and maybe we could start pointing users to where it should be placed to mount at boot instead of mounting by manual means.

Agreed.
Just took me a while to figure out how to mount it, in previous versions it was pretty straightforward, so I already guessed there would be a better way to do it.

Thanks,

ok... yea... I found it again...

the "at boot" mounting action is located in
/etc/rc.d/rc.sysint

the begining of the script starts on line 164

if you want to change the location of where the zgcc*.img is located and or the version you are using... you can change it there...

Well, as soon as I get some go output from the community, we will all look at getting them fixed... then pushing out another release... it would just depend on how long it takes to clear everything up... shouldnt take to long :-)
