Title: Gpsdrive On Pdaxqtrom
Post by: RGRICH on September 21, 2006, 07:26:37 am
I'm running the latest version of pdaxqtrom on a C3000 running Cacko rom beta. For the most part it appears to be working well. I've trying to use gpsdrive with my garmin gps. When the gpsdrive app starts up the screen size is much bigger than the physical screen and hence not all the screen is visible. I haven't found a setting to change this behavior. Other apps i.e abiword, etc display with the window maximized within the physical screen.
Another problem I have is when I start gpsd from within gpsdrive it doesn't appear to start gpsd and hence I have no communication with the gps. I have qpeqps running under qtopia, it starts gpsd and communites with the gps unit without a problem.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
 Randy

well, you are the first person to give me feedback on the gpsdrive build. i just compiled it without hacking the code and since I do not own a gps unit, I am unable to test it. nobody complained about it not working (i guess most people dont have a gps unit either) so I just included it in case it might be useful for someone since it doesnt take up much space.
as for gpsd, i thought it was not required (there were some posts that mentioned that it was not needed anymore in the newer releases of gpsdrive). in order to change the window sizes, someone would need to go through the source code and fix it up to rstrict it to the Z screen size. fluxbox tries to change it initially, but then gpsdrive reasserts itself and rechanges the size. maybe icewm which is also included in the latest pdaXqtrom does a better job with forcing the screen size.
can gpsd be started before gpsdrive or does it have to be started by gpsdrive? i am unable to test this unfortunately.

Hi

I have tested your gpsdrive within pdaxqtrom before. The main trouble is the Z screen that is to short to see the details like speed, gps state.. I was able to move the windows to have only the map on the screen.

For the GPS, gpsd seems not needed (at least with my cheap USB GPS), i have set up (in Preferences ->"Setting 2" tab->) "Use serial comm" , /dev/ttyUSB0 , 4800 baudrate.

In order to work i had to change the owner of "/dev/ttyUSB0" to zaurus before launching gpsdrive (it is root by default when you plug in the GPS)

Thanks for the feedback. It's great to know it works. Can you try running gpsdrive with icewm instead of fluxbox and see whether the resizing is better?

You should try qpegps. Importing new maps is a bit tricky (I use expedia maps downloaded by gpsmap), and a few features are missing but it works.

I tired to change the window mananger from fluxbox to icewm by editing the /etc/X11/defaultwm. When I startx xwindows loads and a bash shell opens but shortly after that everything closes and my xsession is gone.

I have just installed the pdaXqtrom for the first time and may I say what an excellent piece of work it is. Thanks Meanie.

I have tried running GPSDrive under both FluxBox and IceWM with the same result. There is a large chunk of the display missing from the bottom of the window.

Have I misunderstood, Meanie, when you say you can't try it because you don't have a GPS? You can run it anyway, GPS or no, download and display maps and change the position on the map. I can run it on my desktop which does not have a GPS connected.

It would be lovely to have it fit the window but I wouldn't have the faintest idea of what to do to achieve that.

GPSdrive was written for bigger screens with higher res, so it would require some recoding in order to make it fit entirely on the screen. maybe ask the author of gpsdrive to write the code in such a way that it will fit smaller screens.

Hi, I'm trying to setting gpsdrive up on my zaurus running debian pocket workstation.

This application, in my case, has to be ran from command prompt, and I've found in its manual two options that tweaks its size.

I run:

#gpsdrive -s 400 -r 600                                              - (-s height and -r weight) -

and it appears more well fitted on the screen.

I don't know if this can be applied to PdaXrom.

I hope so.

It's looks like a problem related to "GLIBC_2.3" not found. I tried to make it work but I'm not able to find info about it or to instal a valid glibc 2.3.x

If I find a way I'll tell you.
