Linux Installer (http://www.earthcomber.com/comber/setup/downloadLinux.do)
edit: oops i may have an installer for a linux desktop to a palm or wince phone here.
Still, maybe worth looking into if possible?

I haven't been here in awhile, still have my Palm Zire 72.
I recently bought a Zaurus, clamshell. It runs linux 2.4
Any chance that earthcomber will be ported to it?
It's an ARM 270 416mhz
I just got an Ambicom CF GPS unit and it seems to work great so far.
Thank you,
Jon

Thanks for the suggestion

I love the idea of porting Earthcomber to Linux/Qtopia, but I'm not sure we could move that onto the active development queue any time soon. There is, however, something in that domain that might be worth following. Namely, PalmSource has been working on a software layer that would allow you to run Palm OS applications on Linux devices. I'm really not sure where that stands, but it would certainly open up a large library of software to Linux-based handhelds like yours, including Earthcomber. Just tossing that out there for consideration.
Thanks for the comments. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Kind Regards,

John,
Do you by any chance have some example map data you could share?
I would like to take a look at how this stuff is set up, but I don't have access to a palm or windows pda

Last time I used Earthcomber was last December.
The data is free. You'll need to signup for a free account, then download the updater software. (Windows)
[a href=\"http://www.earthcomber.com]http://www.earthcomber.com[/url]
I think there is a Linux desktop PC version of the updater also.
Once installed, the updater will download the counties of your choice. (USA only) and associated database files for points of interest, etc.
All the ones that I have are in *.pdb format (Palm database format).
I have all the counties in one Zip file, but it is 37MB and that would be difficult to send over my 56k dialup.
Earthcomber is designed for Palm, and win handhelds.
I know of no way to convert the pdb files to use on a Zaurus.

this would rock if someone could code a reader for thier maps.

I went through my palm files from last yr, and beside the maps, I found this PDF file describing Earthcomber and it's usage on a Palm.
Here's one county map of Cook co (Chicago)
It's huge, may take ½ hour to upload. It's 6MB unzipped
and it's point of interest file.
