Title: Lots Of Questions...
Post by: fishcube on September 27, 2006, 12:09:52 pm
Hello.  Where is everyone?  I havn't seen many posts this month at all.  I'm hoping there is still quite a few Zaurus owners still around here.

I ordered a C1000 Zaurus from Conics.net (Thanks Brett!) on Sunday.  It will be converted to English.  It's now on its way to the US.  Anyone know how long it takes once its dispatched to US and shows up on the USPS tracking, to arrive at my post office?  We don't have home delivery here since we live in a small town, we have to pick up our mail at post office.  I'd really like to know if I have any hope of getting it by Saturday?  I also noticed the EMS will delivery on holidays and weekends, but what happens when the post office is closed on those days?

I chose the C1000, because it fit into my price range (savings) and I like the idea of no HD.  Since I don't have to worry about dropping it and the HD not working etc.  I may be using this while riding horses, so Flash is important.

I've not had any experience with linux before (or anything similiar).  This is my first linux device.  I only have experience with Windows.  Our main computer is a HP Laptop.  I mainly picked the Zaurus for its keyboard and clamshell type.  I need something with PIM functions and to use for Photos, games, and Database.  Will eventually get a 56K modem for e-mail/internet.  We have dial-up internet.
------

Here are questions I have (bare with me as I know nothing about linux):

1.  What color is the C1000 exactly?  I've seen many pictures but the documentation I've read online says its black?  but, I thought the 3100 was black?

2.  I've been reading that Cacko ROM is a very good English ROM.  Is this a good one for someone who is new to linux?  Will the main screen with icons be the same if I change ROM's?  About switching, I found the instructions on the main page under the release of the Cacko ROM.  If I add contact, calendar info and then switch to Cacko, will I lose that info or will it get transferred?   Also, how do I do a backup?  Can I backup to my laptop PC?  or to a SD card?  I plan on buying a 512mb or 1GB SD card soon after purchase.   I can't seem to find info on backing up the Zaurus, is there good instructions online?

3.  I won't be programming or doing anything major with the linux itself.  But, what info do I need to know about linux to get started?

4.  What brands and type of SD cards work with the C1000?  I read that its not supposed to be fast speed.  But, how does one know if high speed etc?  I've heard there is a patch one can use to allow the C1000 to use bigger SD cards then 1GB.  Is this patch safe and easy to install?

5.  About installing programs.  How hard or easy is it to install programs?  Will a icon for the programs be on the main boot screen after installing?

6.  Which 56K modem is cheapest and works the best with the C1000?

7.  Is there a website that shows the newest programs for Zaurus?  I would like to add tkcAddressbook.  Anyone have this program?  Would love to add DOOM, Heretic etc, how easy is it?  How is the default database program on the Zaurus?  Is there a better one?  I also want to add the xfishtank screensaver.  Anyone have this?  install
instructions?

8.  How easy is it to add mp3's in wma format?  I've got itunes and am slowly switching to Windows media Player.  I can't seem to get the song info to transfer... ??  I'm still thinking of buying a Samsung K5 to use for just mp3s, but it would be nice to have one device for PDA/mp3 etc.  If it works well for that purpose.

9.  Plan to change background image.  Is it easy to use a photo located on the Zaurus as background?  And what size pics can I add to Zaurus that will work as background?

10.  Which site has the best selections of Zaurus accessories?

11.  Books on Linux.  I went to B&N bookstore and they had quite a bit of books on linux.  All foreign material to me...  So, any recommendations?  for a newbie?  I need something I can take with me on the road for reading.

I plan on adding questions as I think of them.... bare with me

So I take it EMS delivers seperately from the post office?  or did you mean your regular postal service delivered the mail normally?   Did you have to sign for it?  I would love to have it tomorrow, but am just hoping by the weekend.

1. Here's 2 pics of the C1000 compared to the C3000
The C1000 is on the left in both pics.

2. Cacko is a variation of Sharp rom. It's basically Sharp rom with a lot of updated drivers, modules, and better apps. It's what most people here recommend as a "Starting" rom for new people with a Zaurus. It's also recommended for persons that are "new" at Linux. Most things, (with a few exceptions), just work in Cacko. Read this thread about Cacko, and installing Cacko. I printed a copy of this thread for refrence.
https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=15820 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=15820)
There is also a version of Cacko, called "Lite"
I suggest you go with the full version and not the Lite version.
You'll need to do some research about the differences, before using Cacko Lite.
Also, one of the best refrences for Cacko/Sharp rom users is Meanie's site.
In my opinion, it is THE BEST refrence for Cacko/Sharp users with the Cxxxx models of Zauri. Find and download zbook3k.pdf (It is a copy of the site, and is always updated by Meanie)
http://www.users.on.net/%7Ehluc/myZaurus/ (http://www.users.on.net/%7Ehluc/myZaurus/)

3. I'll let some of the Linux regulars answer this one. You'll need to learn the basic stuff, like files and directories. And Linux has a major differance from win/dos, that is all files and directories have differing layers of permissions. (In other words, some files/folders will be read only and you cannot access them or change them, without changing the permission to them). Like I said, you'll need to research this, and/or someone more knowledgeable of Linux can explain in more detail.

4. In my opinion, any good quality brand name SD card should work. The old Sandisk ones had problems, but that was 2 yrs ago. I'm using 2 different Sandisk Ultra 2 cards now. I also have a PNY and a Palm MMC card. No probs with any of them.
The speed is limited, so the "very fast" cards will have no advantage in speed.
Check this thread for cards above 1GB on the Cxxxx series of Zauri
https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=18523 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=18523)
It's just a few threads down from here.

5. Most well behaved programs will install an icon in one of your tabs on your screen.
Download from ELSI (At top of this forum). ELSI usually checks if you have necessory dependencies when you download a program form there.
A lot of programs have "dependencies" (These are other files required to enable your program to run). When you find a program that you want, research it first and make sure you have the files needed for that program to run. If you go online with your Z, and use the "feed method", the dependencies will be listed when you download a new program. I don't use that method, it requires to be connected online with your Z.
If you open a feed in your browser on your desktop, there will be a file called "packages". Download it and open it Wordpad on Windows, then copy it to notepad and save it to a text file. It shows all the packages on that feed, and lists the dependencies. The reason you need to open the packages file in wordpad, is because wordpad will convert the text from UNIX to a format that you can read in Windows.
If you cannot open the packages file in wordpad, open it first in notepad, then copy/paste it to wordpad. It will now be converted. Now copy/paste from wordpad, back to notepad, and save it. (Notepad uses monospaced font, and the converted UNIX files look better in notepad.)

6. I use the Ambicom "EZJack modem, CF card. It works out of the box. It may not be the cheapest, but you can purchase it at Staples, and that's why I chose it. I walked in and they ordered it for me.
http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/stores/s...8&cmArea=SEARCH (http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StaplesProductDisplay?prodCatType=1&storeId=10001&catalogId=10051&langId=-1&productId=131958&cmArea=SEARCH)

7. ELSI has most of the up to date software. But one of your best resources for new software is right here in the forums. A lot of people post about, and link to packages here.

8. I'll leave this to someone else.

9. This can be done in the Appearance app, in the system tab. Research this further to get your image to look good in both landscape and portrait modes.
A good site for complete themes is Cresho's site.
http://www.zaurusthemes.org/ (http://www.zaurusthemes.org/)

10. Conics, Trisoft, StreamlineCPUs are sites with Zaurus accessories. These sites test the accessories and are active members of this forum and will help you if needed. Also, for accessories that plug into USB, check Meanie's site, linked above.
Here in the midwest, I look at local stores, Radioshack, Staples, Bestbuy, Officemax, Office Depot, Circuit City.
Walgreens and Big Lots carry a good and cheap USB connector kit with the Mini 'A' connector. Thats the connector needed to use USB host. Such as mice, keyboards externally powered hard drives, and optical drives. USB Bluetooth, etc, etc..

1000 has a black outer shell (upper and lower body) with the keyboard area being silver with grey keys.  The screen frame is a gun metal greyish (pearl).

The 3100 has a black bottom shell and black keyboard area.  The upper shell and screen frame is gun metal greyish (pearl).

Linux in a Nutshell is a book I reference a lot.  Being a newb when I got my 5500 about 3 yrs back I did learn alot about file structures, permissions, and basics about the Command Line/Shell.  One of the best resources is https://www.oesf.org (https://www.oesf.org) and doing general searches in the forums.  The only time I really reference the linux in a Nutshell book is when I'm in a parking lot or somewhere without internet access.  Other than that its always a google search.

Thanks everyone!

Question:  about the usb cable for C1000.  Will my laptop automatically accept the C1000 once plugged in?  As the CD is in japanese and don't see it helping on a US laptop.

Also, is it easy to transfer a file (example from Word) from C1000 to PC in readable format?  Such as a txt file etc.   Or would it be better to get a usb drive and transfer file to it and then hook ubs drive to PC?

As a beginner, I would like to suggest to play around with the English version of original Sharp ROM till you are familiar with Linux OS.

Do post your questions and problems encountered when palying with your Zaraus.

when learning linux you should have an understanding of what you need to learn, you say that you dont want to program on the device, so that means that it should mostly be point and click and learning to configure things (ie no "under the hood" shell work) so i would say read up on meanies site and the fourms, post questions and tinker with the device as well as going throgh every menu you can' that will teach you how to use the device

dont be afriad of bricking the device. if you need to move on to somthing more advanced such as the command line then thats the time to breack out the books

It didn't arrive today.  Tracking shows that it left Japan on 27th 6pm.  But I believe that is Japan time, not US time?   What was others experiences with shipping times with EMS?

I'm hoping it arrives by Saturday.  Our post office says they get all mail by 6am.

xfishtank is an X11 based app. tkcAddressbook is only available for the (Qtopia) Sharp-based images.

Therefore you'll have to run something like Cacko or an original Sharp image to make tkcAddressbook work, and will have to use XQt to run xfishtank. I'm not sure this is quite what you'll want to do.

Is tkcAddressbook that wonderful? Is there nothing else in the x11-based world that can replace it?

I'm not a fan of tkcaddressbook anymore.  It was great back in the beginning when the sharp PIMs were based on xml and the screens were qvga.   AFAIK there is no way to sync it while using the current sharp roms.  I'm not sure if they have done any development since the attempt to move to a sqlite db.

kde pim pi is good and will sync with the sharp pims.  The sharp pim will sync with I think outlook 2000 and before.  I don't know if there is newer software that does outlook 2003.

I don't need the addressbook to sync with PC.  I just need a nice one that looks nice on the VGA and has good features that are customizable preferred.

what is XQT?  and why don't I want to use it?

tkc may look nice, but the kde one isn't bad.  The kde addressbook (kapi) has features that you won't find with the tkc one.

- You can use kapi with the stock email program (after a dtm sync).
- You can add links to users of calender events in kopi.
- You can add pictures to each entry.

Hi,

LINUX can be frustrating at first, since you are at the mercy of a new OS
where everything will naturally appear foreign at first.  There are many books
out there, and lots of stuff on the net as well.

I once bought "The Redhat 7.1 Bible", which included the RH7.1 as well, so
everything in the book "just worked".  It was a big book, and covered much more
than I wanted to learn at first, but it was divided well, and I could jump around
from concept to concept easily.

I find the Slackware Book, found at http://www.slackbook.org/ (http://www.slackbook.org/) (view the single page
version if you have the resources) as a very good starting point currently.

Also, you may want to find a decent Live CD of a decent linux, such as knoppix, to
play around on a desktop machine, which will be more comfortable with a larger
screen, keyboard, and a real mouse.  And Live CDs do not require you to install
anything to your desktop, as they run from memory.

Regarding the addressbook that comes with the C1000.  Can I customize it to show Home number/Home mobile in the main screen?   and when editing the contact is there a way to move fields from bottom to top?

I won't be using any of the "work" fields.

I saw screen shots at www.figlabs.com and I can't tell if its changeable.

I found a lot of stuff on the net pertaining to digital cameras and the Zaurus.
I've uploaded a folder full of camera applications and libraries and dependencies.
There are 2 text files that describe what each IPK is used for.
I am also posting a screenshot of the folder with these files showing.

Didn't receive it today   tracking says it just hit US in Chicago and is inbound to customs today (30th)...  what?  it took 3 days from leaving Japan to hit US...!   I know most people have said 4-5 days shipping, so not sure why its taking longer to just get to the US.

So, I'm hoping for Monday.

You can always come back to it later.

or where can I download the english usb driver?

I did the hardware wizard and selected the folder I got this file (c1000driver):

http://www.aonorokugo.net/rokugo/misc/zaurus/ (http://www.aonorokugo.net/rokugo/misc/zaurus/)

and finished, but when I do PC link, it doesn't work.
-----

Now, when I connect zaurus with usb cable, it says the hardware wizard is recognizing SL series Ver 3 (NDIS 5) and wants me to install from CD or specific location.

Now what?

How do I get my PC to recognize the Zaurus for file transfer etc?

Search Meanie website again, (I'm sure you've done it once because you used the search option in the forums, right?)

Also it would be nice to edit your own posts, instead of publishing 4 in a row. Is more readable, (and uses less server MB), and that's what you're looking for.

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=142878\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
It is refering to the usb driver you downloaded, I hate to say it - Windows is stupid this way. But tell windows that you will sellect the driver you want, and use "have disk" and browse it to the usb file you downloaded.

Yes, give it another try, but do not let windows search for the driver. Select where it says that you will choose the driver, and click continue where you get the pop-up for device signing. It's stupid, I know, but ut is the only way for Windows to see your device and the driver. I hope this helps, it will get easier, trust me.

Okay, got it to grab the driver I downloaded and it says its installed correctly and ready.  But, I tried PC Link and it doesn't work.

Am I trying the USB - I/O or USB - TCP/IP

The TCP one gives me error, and the other one I/O just keeps communicating, but nothing happens.

??

---

and when I click on add new hardware, it finds all drivers its found, and there are quite a few, including two that are:

SL series V3 (WDM)
SL series V3 (NDIS 5)

or should I actually continue and add new hardware and start over?

-----
when the C1000 is plugged in to PC, it shows up as SL series V3 (NDIS 5)

I can uninstall it while its connected, I just don't want to delete something off of C1000 that I need.

These are the two methods I use to connect my Z to my Windows XP box
The first is "Storage mode" - The second is "TCP/IP over USB"

Storage mode
I don't use my Z to sync, but if you just want your Z to appear as a storage device in Windows, do the following:
On the Zaurus, Go to Settings > PC Link.
In PC Link, select "Storage" (Make sure USB cable is unpluged when changing settings in PC Link). Click OK at top right.
Now, plug in your Zaurus to your Windows PC, a message will pop up on your Z. Click OK in the popup.
Wait about 10 seconds, (I have to wait because my Zaurus is parsing my Zaurus's hard drive.)
In windows, open "My Computer". There should be a new removable disk or removable storage.
This is your Zaurus. Depending on what settings you used in PC Link on the Zaurus, you'll be able to open your CF card, SD card, or Documents folder.
(My "Documents" folder on my Z is on my hard drive, yours should be in flash memory on your Z)
PC Link Storage mode, only allows you to access one thing at a time (ie CF, SD, Documents dir).

TCP/IP over USB
I won't explain TCP/IP over USB
There are several methods to accomplish this. These are two very helpful threads to get you connected.
One uses a "Bridge" to bridge your lan card on a high speed connection.
The other uses "Internet Connection Sharing" (I use this, because the "Bridge method didn't work for me)

Internet Connection Sharing method
https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=18619 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=18619)

Bridge method
https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=18602 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=18602)

Hope this helps,
Jon

Thanks.

I won't be able to connect wirelessly or through internet at all.

I tried the storage mode.  and I got no window on the Zaurus that had an ok button, it just has a screen saying "communicating with PC"  and I do have a removable disk drive on My computer, but when I click on it, it says "Please insert a disk into Drive E:"   Also the screen with communicating with PC is still on Zaurus through all of this.  and I have to remove the usb cord to stop the screen.

??

---
and the only settins under Storage on PC Link, is CF card and SD card.

I want to be able to move files/photos/music etc and software from PC to Zaurus.

If you mean the screen shown in the screenshot below, that is OK
You'll need to go into PC Link, with cable disconnected, and make a selection next to "Storage" in the dropdown box.
You need a CF card or SD card inserted, to be able to select one of them.
I don't have an SL-C1000, but I assumed you would have a 3rd selection in the dropdown.
Mine says "Internal-HDD" (I have an SL-C3100 with hard drive)

Jon,
That's a good tip.
Works great on my CF card, but not the SD card because that is formatted as ext2, and my windows pc keeps telling me the drive is not formatted, and asks if I want to format it now.

there is a website to get a driver for windows that will let you read ext2, ext3 filesystems under windows.
Let me find it and I'll post it here.
http://www.fs-driver.org/ (http://www.fs-driver.org/) (site is kinda slow at the moment..)
Here's a screenshot of an SD card formatted as ext2, and in Windows with above driver soft installed.

I have already tried that driver, but I always get that pesky pop-up error message regarding delayed writes to it.
It shows the card's files with no problem, but I can't get past that error message.

Thanks anyway...

Mine only has CF and SD card under Storage.  So, I guess it won't work for the internal Flash

I plan on getting a SD card soon and I'm hoping I can select that under PC Link and have it show up correctly under "My computer".   I guess one can only save to SD or CF cards on the C1000.  It's strange I can't transfer software to the C1000 without a SD or CF card.

Also, I take it once the files etc are on the SD card, I'll be able to move what ever files to selected folders on the Internal flash?

If you don't get the popup, just ignore my mention of it. It pops up in Cacko after a fresh reboot, the first time you connect USB.

But, I won't be able to get a SD card by then.

Is there another way to get files back and forth without using internet?

Yes only the SD card (formatted at FAT) and CF acrd will show up as storage when you change PC LInk to storage mode. The internal flash does not show as storage on Windows.

The ony 2 other ways would be
1) get a Mini USB cable which accepts USB for the Zaurus and then you can plug in a USB stick (if you have one) and move files to/from the Zaurus and Windows computer

2) Load the Zaurus desktop software (there are version compatibility issues and it works only with Sharp ROM maybe) and then internal flash can be accessed also thru the Desktop software to transfer files. Of course you need to install drivers first.
(But it seems this method is not working for you because of driver issues)

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=142959\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I meant formatted as FAT (not ext3).

Of cousre the Zaurus will mount most USB sticks via the USB host cable.
I do that all the time, where most big files ar on my USB stick (and not on the CF or SD).

But with USB stick, you have to mount the USB stick explicitly. It wont be auto-detected and mounted like a CF or SD card on the zaurus.

Pretty simple really
first make a directory for the USB stick to show up as
mkdir /mnt/usbstick

then mount as
mount -t vfat /dev/sdaX  /mnt/usbstick

Edit : Sorry, just tried on my Zaurus with my Memorex 1 GB stick, and on Cacko ROM, it DOES auto-mount. I dont need to mount is with commandas as I suggested.
Don't know about Sharp ROM though. (its been a long time back since I used Sharp ROM).

Seriously Fishcube look at the connectivity part of the wiki.  It gives step by step instructions on how to do TCP/IP over USB.  When you connect the Zaurus to the PC the pc will treat the usb connection as a network adapter.  If you give this adapter an ip address of 192.168.129.2 then you will get connectivity to the Z.  With that you can browse to the z through your pc by going to start>run> type in "\\192.168.1.201\"

This will allow you to browse the Z through samba.  As well as ssh, VNC, KO/PI syncing, and more.  The wiki is all knowing..... the wiki is very powerful..... the wiki will make you happy..... the wiki......wiiiiikkkiiiiiiii.

You can try Sharp's own software "Photo Storage"
It has been converted to English, so it should be good to go.
Check the Cacko ROM archives and the hav the English IPK.  Should work fine for Sharp ROM as well.

Most SD cards and CF cards are formatted as FAT from the factory.
On your Zaurus, look in system info and click the "Mount" tab.
This will show you what format the SD card is.
Mine shows this for my SD card.

/mnt/card /dev/mmcda1  vfat  rw,noatime

The part your'e interested in is the "vfat" under the "Type" column.

After you plug in the camera,
do a "dmesg" on it.

See if the camera is recognised as a device when connected.
Also did you do the mount on the camera device  to mount it as a storage space on your Zaurus ?

A Search is the best tool to find answers to questions already asked.
Of course being a newbie, you dont often knwo what excatly to search for, so here it is...

GPhoto2 - great application to make your camera work on the Zaurus

Heres a thread with questions like how to mount manually ...

One thing though, you might want to switch over to Cacko ROM, since that is the most supported ROM which is similar (compatible) to the Sharp ROM, but also better with added functionalities built-in (like USB support etc).

But again, dont rush yourself - take it all one-step at a time.

As bluedevils pointed, get the package and install it.
(Note : you can have the elsix or the older www.killefiz.de/zaurus links handy for serching and downloading these apps mentioned here).

Once you are in the command line prompt, to get back to the GUI from the command line, just type "exit".

Your wrong.  I think the cacko rom (full) is exactly what he needs now.  He will have software built in and software from the cacko feeds.  He will also have the most up-to-date drivers compared to what he is dealing with now.  Learning to flash a rom is not that hard.  Just be careful of the light/power setting bug (keep it at least one notch above the minimal light level).

Ok, downloading Zip file now.  Going to take sometime, we have dial-up.  Looks to be a couple hours away from finishing

At end of instructions, it says  "14. Now select "1 Install new ROM" and wait. Reboot your Zaurus when ROM installaiton is complete."

How does one reboot?  and how will I know the ROM has finished installing?

It also states to repartition internal flash before updating ROM?  Do they mean the SD/CF card?

no they mean the built-in flash where the /home directory resides

For internal flash memory, I have 50,248 KB available.  Is this enough?

You have been reading this?  The part about entering 32 is where they are resizing the internal flash for root (my mistake it wasn't for the /home directory)

Installation:

    1. Extract the 3 files - initrd.bin tools.tar updater.sh - to the root of your CF or SD/MMC card.
    2. Make sure that Zaurus isn't plugged into AC power.
    3. Remove battery for at least 5 seconds.
    4. Replace battery (replace battery cover, lock cover), plug in AC power.
    5. Press and hold the "OK" button on the keyboard.
    6. Turn the power on, you should see the Japanese service menu.
    7. Now Plug in the Power Cord. (You will get an error if it isn't plugged in!)
    8. Select option 4 (flash/update).
    9. You then have several options including CF and SD
    10. Choose either CF or SD, depending on which media you put the files on.

    11. Select "3 NAND Flash Utils"
    12. Select "1 Resize root partition"
    13. Enter 32 when prompted for root partition size.
    12. Flash will be repartioned and Zaurus will reboot.

    13. Repeat steps 2-10 again and wait for the menu start menu.
    14. Now select "1 Install new ROM" and wait. Reboot your Zaurus when ROM installaiton is complete.

Guys...
I don't think it's wise for fishcube to be installing cacko (or any other rom) at this time.
He seems to know absolutely nothing about Linux or the Zaurus, and I would hate to see him brick his new z.

fishcube...
I strongly suggest you take some time to READ through the forums, and get some understanding of how things work on the zaurus before you get into a mess you can't get out of.
IMHO, you should stick with the sharp rom that came installed on your C1000 for awhile (please!!!!).

Regards,
Doug

well there are situations where people feel they've bricked their Zs, but I remember trisoft saying it is very rare where the Z is truly bricked.  I actually think the process of installing the rom is easier than learning linux.  Just follow the directions.

Will this work with the Zaurus?

[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div] (http://index.php?act=findpost&pid=143092\")

I have one of these ...
[a href=\"http://www.amazon.com/IOGEAR-Universal-Hi-Speed-Reader-Writer/dp/B00083Y4HO/sr=8-1/qid=1159994084/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-3340233-2097624?ie=UTF8&s=electronics]http://www.amazon.com/IOGEAR-Universal-Hi-...8&s=electronics[/url]

And it works perfectly on the Zaurus.
But again, I am using Cacko ROM, so you are back to square one.

The thing is Cacko ROM comes with built in USB support while on the Sharp ROM, you might have to add those extra modules, which is why people using Cacko generally don't have issues with such regular accesories.

And BTW, good find about those pictorial instuctions for installing Cacko ROM. I wish I had those when I installed Cacko, because for a first time NAND partition and ROM install, working on the the japanese screen with English instruction with only matching numerals between them was indeed very discincerting.

Wish you all the luck and success in getting Cacko on. I am sure you will be glad you did it after it goes thru fine.
Title: Lots Of Questions...
Post by: nilch on October 04, 2006, 04:46:16 pm
BTW, just so you are aware, there are two Cacko ROM versions - a full version and a Lite version (for the same version number).

The Cacko Lite does not have all the USB/Bluetooth/etc etc modules pre-installed and you need to add the extra modules yourself. Also most Sharp apps and third party apps are excluded from the Lite version. The name explains why.

The full version comes will all the bells and Whistles and necessaty open source apps (like Ko/PI etc) installed.

It's been on same screen for around 6-8 minutes.

Zaurus has rebooted. You'll need to unplug it and remove the battery as instructed in 2. & 3.
Now Start at number 2. and repeat the below steps. When done with number 10. wait for the menu.
Now go to 14.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Great - see it wasnt THAT difficult.
And therein lies the secret sause for working with Linux - just do things with it and you will learn even more. Linux makes you experiment more by its very open nature of tweaking and modifying and "playing" with it.

BTW, does you camera now work "out-of-the-box" on the new ROM ?

Then the next time you start the app, it will load much quicker.

just do a NAND backup, then when you want to go back, do a NAND restore. it's quite simple with the c1000 since you don't need to worry about backing up/repartitioning the microdrive since you dont have one unlike the c3x00

Thanks for the reply, Meanie.

So am I correct in assuming that a NAND backup includes a complete backup of the ROM, plus the data contained in the backups made with backup/restore?

I ask this because the NAND backups are 132MB in size.

Doug

I changed my tab coloring and all Qtopia interface/dialogs to a darker shade of blue.
It's been a long time since I did this, but found most of the information in the "Themes Icons and Backgrounds" Forum.
Don't follow these instructions, because I don't remember all the details. It went something like this:
I copied the zblu file to zblu3
I edited zblu3 with a new HEX number that represents the color.
I then renamed the original zblu file to zblu2 and renamed my zblu3 to zblu.
Then I re-enabled the zblu style in the appearance tab.
Now my tabs, dialogs, and program borders, are a slightly darker shade of blue.

Like I said, my description above isn't complete, and I may have forgot some steps, so do some research in the above mentioned forum.
You'll eventually figure it out.
Here's an older screenshot of my apps tab just after I changed this setting. It also shows a dark blue wallpaper.

that's a hard one to answer.  I don't know that particular package as I use kopi's built in alarm as my alarm clock.  The ways you can figure this out, is to open a console and go commandline (check permissions and manual ipkg install).  The first one is to go to the directory and try to install it manually.  This will also fail if permissions are wrong.

Code: [Select]
cd /home/zaurus/Documents/Install_FIles
Code: [Select]
ipkg install

Ko/Pi and Ka/Pi are the best parts of Cacko ROM I would say.
Ok the names kind of don't mean anything at first - but it refers to

KOrganisaer / Pi (Pi = platform independant or something like that) and Ka/Pi is KAddressbook.

So one is a Calendar and one is an addressbook. The advantage over Sharp Calendar and Addressbook - is that it is an integrated package - so you can link contacts from addressbook into your calendar events, see Calendar by various formats whcih Sharp calendar does not to - has a Todo , Agenda built into Calendar, has a notify icon (task bar iconkind of) to show whats next evets etc etc and I could go on and on.
Theres a whole thread on Ko applications in the applications or software thread .

And of course Ko/Pi comes with an alarm clock KAlarm or something like that.

Integration is the name of the Korganiser game.

make sure you get the sharp rom version (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=104103&package_id=112604&release_id=302114)

You will have to unzip it via commandline

Link to portabase documentation.

I used it for a short while, seemed like I had to create a template first before it would open my karaoke database, then it never really finished opening it.

I went to CSV View instead

I believe portabase is asking you where you want to put your database, before you even start.  Not something intuitive to a new linux user.

Is there a better music player?  The default one only shows Track 1, Track 2 while playing music.  I want it to show the song name/info.   I changed the file names to the song name, but it still won't show up while playing.

Also is there a way to bookmark?  for podcasts etd?

Changing the song name will not show as Track info.

If you are using Itunes to rip songs, select the song and right click and set the properties - Song Name, Category, Genre, Artist etc etc.

After that the music player will recognise the song info and show as part of tract info while playing. The file name is just that - a file name.

In fact if I have a song file called "track1.mp3" and it has the track info set (as I mentioned above), the correct song name will show while playing and not the file name - "track1".
