Hi everyone,
psx4zaurus, also known as ZPSX, has a new version out for pdaXrom users.
For more information, head to:
http://www.psx4all.net (http://www.psx4all.net)
Be sure to post a comment in the news thread after downloading.
If you need assistance with psx4zaurus, let me know in the PSX4ALL Zaurus topic.
Thanks!

Nice work, man!
Thank you!
-
WOW!!!
I'm sad becouse I have to wait monday before I can back home and take my psx game...
-
I've been trying to download this, but the forums on www.dcemu.co.uk requires registration, so I registered and hours later I still haven't received the confirmation email. I was wondering whether anybody has downloaded it and could upload it to this forum? - if zodttd doesn't mind
-
Great news- can't wait to try this! I'm waiting for a cacko version or SRAM support in the OZ kernel + an OZ compile first though.
I've been reading the reports of people trying out this new beta on the GP2X, normally at 266Mhz, and most games seem to be running around 10fps so it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect double that (and more) on an OC'd cxxxx Z.
Zodttd: How much faster do you think you can make psx4all? Do you think theres a chance of 30fps under 3D games (without sound?) on the GP2X?

OMG! this is amazing, FF7 runs very nice! a lil slow, but very playable, man, this makes me wanting to go back and beat all those classic RPGs again...I think we should all get together, and make a compatbility list.

I tried Kula World ... does not work ... Game loaded succesfully then frozen. Will try FF7 when I get home
-
Zod you have made a great work!
I tried re2 and it's run very well (in many situation it's full speed).
Then I try gt, it runs, but gt is an extreme 3d game, so it run too slow, but see it on Z is very beautyful.
-
Very nice indeed, it's really amazing seeing this stuff running on the Z. So far I've tried Wipeout 2097, Castlevania, and Oddworld, unfortunately none work at a real playable speed, and there are some emulation glitches but nonetheless, very nice.
I notice in this thread (http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=240526&postcount=4) you mention installing an sdl bvdd ipk, but I've not been able to find one for pdaxrom, maybe this is only for qtopia, but if there is such a thing that could accellerate psx4all on the CX000 series, would be nice to know.
Just a suggestion but how about including some frameskipping mode (if there isn't already) to maybe speed up the emulation at the cost of looks, I see no evidence of such a mode in the menu.
Great work, I hope life goes on with this project

FF7, Wipeout XL, and others *can* run full speed. But I had to do the following to get it there:
- I test on a Zaurus C1000 running at 624MHz and pdaXrom Beta 3 (2.4 kernel) with SDL 1.2.9 (bvdd enhanced)
1. Get and install the bvdd enhanced "SDL 1.2.9 armv5tel" ipkg at http://zaurus.vivaphp.net/pdaxrom/misc (http://zaurus.vivaphp.net/pdaxrom/misc)
2. Go into X11 by running "startx" and overclock as needed.
3. Exit X11 to the console and run ./psx4all
By doing this, you have full screen accelerated SDL graphics. The overclocking to 624MHz helped a lot too of course. My C1000 handles it well though.

There is no SDL 1.2.9 on that site [a href=\"http://zaurus.vivaphp.net/pdaxrom/misc]http://zaurus.vivaphp.net/pdaxrom/misc[/url]. Or at least I don't see it there.:-) There is only SDL-mixer with ogg support (compiled by me I think). Please attach this SDL_1.2.9 ipk to this thread. It will help ppl to run psx4zaurus.
Great work zottd anyway!!! FF7 runs OK but sometimes slow when walking, without overclocking and bvdd SDL lib. Can you find out why Kula World (great logical game) does not work? I can send you .ZNX iso if you don't have this game.
Thnx.

Actually I'm already using that SDL ipk, I questioned it because it says nothing of BVDD, are we to assume that 1.2.9 is the BVDD enhanced version?

I doubt that SDL in feed is compiled with bvdd funkcionality. I have this one installed on my Z. I just want to compare with zottd's.

Me too ... maybe it is same SDL as zottd is using :-)
-
Oh wow. I feel stupid...
I've been using sdl_1.2.9_armv5tel.ipk for testing.
This SDL package in fact does NOT use BVDD.
I figured out where the confusion came from. I was told when first getting the Zaurus that this package used bvdd. Shortly after I actually figured out how to use the SRAM by using the bvdd kernel module directly in psx4all and bypassing SDL. It went as fast as what I had THOUGHT was SDL 1.2.9 using bvdd (which it infact does not). So I figured my implementation of BVDD was as fast as the SDL's, so I just went back to using SDL.
So what we have here is a mess of confusion. I'm going to sort out whether bvdd even helps performance by using that SRAM.
The good news from all this is, it will make me less afraid of trying different distro's for builds of psx4all. Knowing I don't need to depend on certain kernel modules and such is a great relief.
I do know that I found that using sdl_1.2.9_armv5tel.ipk and pdaXrom Beta 3 in console mode runs things the fastest though. Whatever is in that package for FBCON's mode, runs great.
Anyone know of a link to OZ's latest toolchain?
-
well...i thought pdaxrom came with BVDD...i m not sure tho

About how long does it take for a game to load? I have it sitting at
Loading Game
Load Sucess
for about 5-7 min.. and no movement... it is Crash Bandicott 2...
Late
-
I think that game was reported to not work on the GP2X version of psx4all. Most likely it's not compatible yet. I'll look into it.
-
good business... I will try another... So the freezing at Load Sucess is how you determine incompatibility?

Is there way to rip CD from linux?
-
Zodttd:
So now you believe that accessing the SRAM may well be 'not dependant on kernel modules'? So do you think you may now be able to get BVDD-esque performance under the latest OZ kernel (the one with QVGA support)?
rmrfchik:
cdrdao read-cd --read-raw --datafile gamename.bin --device /dev/hdc gamename.toc
of course you need to replace /dev/hdc with whatever device the game disc is in
Is this command not included in the zpsx docs? I darn well think it should be!

There is no setup needed in kernel 2.6, if you have the sram patch applied.
-
SRAM patch?
Is the SRAM patch in that test kernel that hrw posted recently or is it even newer? If its newer, where can we download an SRAM patched kernel or the patch?
EDIT
Yes there is an SRAM patch but apparently it isn't working with the new pxafb system yet according to RP. It is being worked on.
According to RP, once the SRAM patch is done X and SDL will be accelerated, no patching required. The clamshell Z can only do 320x240 or 640x480
Could somebody please post a video of their Z running zpsx? It would be best to pick a visually impressive game such as Strider 2, GT 2, Einhander, R-Type Delta or Crash Bandicoot 2.

I've seen a few GP2X vids of the emu but none running on a Z and it has to be beta4. Someone with a cxxxx running zpsx needs to make some vids of it in action
-
Great work as usual Zodttd!
Not quite as fast as I was hoping, but definately a few fps faster on my C860 and ever closer to realtime FF7 and FF8! I've had quite a few segfaults (with SDL parachute) errors, and the menu seems to double keypresses quite frequently, but otherwise another great build.
With all this discussion of SDL versions, which should I be running on my 860?

Hello, can you find out also what's wrong with Kula World (I love this logical game it is playable on windows with epsxe... Same ... Game loaded then freeze.
Is there any possibility to run FF7 at fullspeed without overclocking? Overclocking eats your battery very fast.
With overclocking FF7 is playable fullspeed also with sound! (only sometimes SDL parashute ) but I can live with it. It is only beta and it's great! I am looking forward for normal release .... for state saving and maybe improoved speed and compatibility. I will try tomb raider soon.

Hi there...
I am not into games that much, but I would like to try out the emulator. Can someone post a simple came-rom in order to download it and give it a try?
I need something small...
Tnx...

I have some PS1 games. Can I convert them? How can I do this?

I tried Metal Slug X... it hangs but not always atthe same point. Anyway it hangs next to character selection (a little before, or while showing).

I've noticed that when I play games on my Kingston 1Gig SD (ext3) it hangs after a while. If I play off my 1Gig IBM Microdrive (FAT) it plays just fine. Anyone else experience this?

Hello,
Great work zodttd! I'm really enjoying playing Diablo in bed on my C1000.
I've started making a compat list for psx game on zodttd's psx4zaurus.
Please post your experiences with games here in this OESF thread and I'll update the list:
http://www.tyrannozaurus.com/psx4all-compat-list/ (http://www.tyrannozaurus.com/psx4all-compat-list/)
Zodttd... would you mind updating your first post with this link?
-
Hi Antix!
Good idea about your compatibility list- you can most likely add Strider 2 to that list as it worked for me under the previous beta but you never know. I must point out you have omitted the first d of the cdrdao command.
I'm very happy to see the return of your updates to tyrannozaurus- great site! Are there no other good Z news sites (apart from oesf and ELSI)?
Soon we'll be able to play zpsx under OZ too!

I just tried Dragon Warrior VII, Disc1.
It gets to the creating a new game part, but after entering a new name the screen changes to the background, the music keeps playing but you can't do anything.

I do not have any Linux machine, only my Z. I guess that I have to use XP for this procedure. Can I use nero for this, right?
After I have the iso file, I just place usder the correct folder on my Z?
By the way, tnx for your concern...
-
Nero probably won't work, as I believe the NRG file it makes isn't a "RAW" format BIN/ISO.
For Windows, I'd use a free program called cdrdao. By going to the "XDuplicator" site you'll find a nice Windows frontend for cdrdao plus cdrdao itself.
Btw, a new psx4zaurus build is almost ready. It's faster and I'd say more compatible, though compatibility has changed on various games. Valkyrie Profile, for instance, works now.
-
Go ZodTTD!
Good to see continued rapid progress on zpsx!
Did you find the cacko toolchain? Are you still going to do a cacko build? You'd get a lot more testers that way but I'm not sure the cacko kernel or its version of SDL (or both) can do QVGA- I've certainly not seen it.
Thanks!

From what I've read Beta 1, 2 and 3 should work. Beta 4+ (with 2.6 kernel) may not work. Correct me if I'm wrong.
I'm using Beta3 and it works great.

Cool. So you can use cdrdao for Win and Lin. Nice.
Zodtdd... is there much overhead (during decompression) when using the compressed (PocketISO .Z) iso format you mentioned in previous posts? If not, is there a way to do it under Linux?
nm... I just googled PocketISO and it seems to just compress video, so it would add any extra overhead and might actually help with games like Lunar:SSS where the sound in the video gets out of sink after a couple seconds. correct me if I'm wrong.
Keep up the great work! Looking forward to more speed.
-
Here's an attached updated build for pdaXrom Beta 1/2/3 users.
New in psx4zaurus Beta 4 Build 3:
- Faster.
- Compatibility has improved, especially in 3D games. Though some working games might not work now, if so let me know.
- Included is a recommended SDL library to use with psx4zaurus on pdaXrom. Using this SDL over others can improve performance and enable QVGA in console mode. It is recommended for performance reasons that psx4zaurus be played in console mode.
Let me know how this build compares to the last.
-
PocketISO 2.0 will compress a raw BIN rip of a psx game to .Z (don't use .ZNX or .BZ for now as its not well supported yet). Keep in mind if you check mark any videos or sound, it will try to rip them out of the compressed file, which is a bit tricky and can make a compatible game become incompatible.
Also, sometimes there's an error with .Z compression/decompression that is causing games on the Zaurus to not load. It seems rare though, but keep that in mind for compatibility lists.
Best way to compress games with PocketISO 2:
- Use the FF8 search method as it will not find anything to rip for most games, which in our case is a good thing.
- Use Normal Compression.
- Process ISO
- Copy the .Z *and* .Z.table file for use with psx4all.
-
danboid: I'd like to do a Cacko build of psx4zaurus today. I have Cacko 1.23 set up and have the BVDD SDL 1.2.5. I need a recent toolchain for Cacko though. I only have the 2.95.3 (old) toolchain for compiling the Cacko kernel. If you can find the most recent Cacko toolchain, that would be great! I will have a build for it ready today if so.
-
I only have the 2.95.3 (old) toolchain for compiling the Cacko kernel.
AFAIK there is no such thing as a new toolchain for cacko. Cacko is a collection of tweaks added on the sharp rom and everything is built with the same toolchain used for the first zauruses.
I think Meanie has compiled a newer gcc/glibc and there is also a gcc compiled without softfloat here: http://mail.pdaxrom.org/download/1.1.0beta1/XQt/ (http://mail.pdaxrom.org/download/1.1.0beta1/XQt/) but if you compile with this, you will probably need to install a newer glibc together with the older one (again I think Meanie does something like this).
Another option might be to compile psx4zaurus with all the libs statically linked.

First post in this thread. I'd like to try this in Cacko.
I'm currently using Cresho's neogeo-turbogrfx-genesis-nes-snes emulator and I think it's great.
I've never owned a PS or PS2. Are there a lot of good RPGs for this platform?

I've never owned a PS or PS2. Are there a lot of good RPGs for this platform?

Yes very good RPGs
Final Fantasy VII,VIII,IX,
Chrono Cross
Breath Of Fire IV
etc...

-FF7, yes prety much
-Chrono Cross, no
Chrono Trigger, yes prety much
-BoF 3, yes
-FF Tactics, yes
Check my website (see link below) for a compatibility list that we're working on.
If you want me to test a certain game, just let me know. I might have it.

W00T! thanks Antikx. You rock
Do you have monster rancher...? :-D

pgas: Thanks for your help, especially when it concerns a different rom such as Cacko.
Speaking of Cacko. It has me a bit upset. I'm probably going to have to land up using Meanie's GCC and do a static link of the libraries used. I am able to statically link all of them...except zlib. Is there a "libz.a" for Cacko? Or will I have to make one myself? I haven't found one yet.
As for psx4zaurus on pdaXrom, more optimizations are being made.
-
Is it biased if I report games I test for the compat list? ;P
I have a bunch of "rare but in demand" games ripped. Valkyrie Profile, Castlevanie SOTN, etc...

A new build of psx4zaurus has been made:
For downloads and discussion, please use:
http://www.psx4all.net/ (http://www.psx4all.net/)
New in build 4:
- Improved performance for games such as Tekken.
- Now includes both a CACKO build and a PDAXROM build.
pdaXrom blits to the screen much faster than Cacko 1.23 with BVDD SDL. And with pdaXrom's overclocking ability it outpaces Cacko. But Cacko is faster clock-for-clock.

Great to see more action here!
I'm quite surprised cacko performs better than pdaxrom - I've not even attempted overclocking yet but I might just have to now.
zottd- go ahead and report if you like, you know better than most - Castlevania is one game I would love to play through on the Z
way to go!

I thought I had it but I can't seem to find it. I may have loaned it out.
Sorry. Perhaps someone else can test for you.
-
Anyone know where I can get just a Demo or Sample game to test the cacko version with.
I don't care if it's even a game, just a file that "resembles" the game file structure, that has low requirements and runs some tests on the emulator.
I have one game already that runs, but with video problems and is very slow with sound off.
I got it running in cacko Qtopia, but had path problems at first.
-
What program are people using to get the images? Also, has anybody tried Final Fantasy IX?
Thanks.

I thought it would be easier to find homebrew psx games. After a couple hours googling, my answer to you is to but a $5 used psx game that is non3d. Sorry. Hoped to be more helpfull.
Diablo works pretty well (OC'ed) if you can find it. Check my compat page for more.

I looked at Amazon, and final fantasy 8 comes on 4 CDs
How would someone rip these CDs and be able to play this? It's about 2-2½GB total.
BTW, Antikx, I have a game now called "Legend of Legaia"
It runs very slow in the cacko version, but I can also play it on my desktop PC.

I would think that you would need to rip each CD into a seperate BIN file like you've probably been doing with single CD games.
I've been meaning to ask zodttd about mult-disc support.
Most people don't play past the first CD, but we might belong to a different category of gamers.
Zodttd, is there support for swapping a CD in mid game-play?

I've never played it but it looks neat. I've added your info to the new wiki (soon to be revealed after zodttd has his time with it).
It looks like there is a fair amount of 3D in that game. All that 3d would slow it down slow down your experience. I would recommend a 2D if you want to see better speed.
I'll go though my collection soon and pull out/test the 2d games soon.
-
In the latest build, the text overlays in Final Fantasy 8 are broken. Other than that, great work. I tested a much older build, and the new ones are certainly much faster!
-
I forgot to mention that I have Ubuntu Dapper and Windows XP available to rip with. I would rather use Ubuntu, though. I am basically looking for an easy to use program that is known to work. Can anybody post one?
Thanks!

funny, I have the same choice never used dapper to rip with although there are some console utils that might do it. I've used Alcohol 120% in XP and it does the job fine, pretty quick too.
-
You've used Alcohol 120%, and can verify that it works for ripping games for psx4all? Are there any settings I have to change, and what format should I put the images in, .bin or .iso?
Thanks.
-
Is anyone doing this under Linux? What software are you using?
-
Actually I've used it for ripping in the past for emulating on the Xbox, I know that I tested wipeout 2097 on psx4all and it recognised it. I created cue/bin files and used pretty much default settings. It really was straightforward but if you have trouble let me know and I'll take a look
-
Is there any known issue with FF9? I've tried to rip it three or four times, and i hasn't worked. It gets past the Square Electronics or whatever it is logo, and then gives a blank screen.
Thanks for your suggestions, but I would like to use Linux, as XP is being dumb and slow. Also, I didn't see an option to rip as a .bin, and have uninstalled the software (I don't know why, but I don't like free software on XP.) Do you (or anybody else) have any suggestions for Linux that are known to work?
Thanks.
-
If you have *.MDF & *.MDS files created from Alcohol 120%, I posted a Howto in this thread for converting them into psx4zaurus friendly *.BIN files.
Sorry, this uses windows..

cdrdao - it has already been asked and answered several times already in this thread!
-
I just got "Konami Arcade Classics" running
This has simple, low-graphics games from the early 1980's
I played the helicoptor sim and it runs at 15FPS under Cacko
It's playable, but would be more realistic at 30FPS
-
Thank you! I will try this if nobody comes up with a Linux solution before I get impatient enough to reboot back into Windows.
-
Sorry to ask a question that had been answered. I actually had seen that, but couldn't figure out how to use it (I'm rather new to Linux). Can you post the command to use?
Thanks, and sorry again!
-
FF7 is not so fast as you say...for me..
It's fast, true, but is in fullspeed only without sound, and in fullmontionvideo it's slow, exactly like RE2.
Metal Gear Solid and RE3 dont't work.
-
zottd: are you planning on putting in any frameskipping options? if we can at least have a couple of games running at full speed with gameskip then this emu will be a lot more use
-
After bugging people for a whille, I finally got a game working. The other two I tried froze at the black screen after the first block of text that appeared (Square Electronics, Sony, etc.). Is this related to the game, my image, or is it caused by my CPU running at stock speed (I have no clue if this could cause it to hang, but I thought I would mention it)? The emulator said that the game loaded successfully.
Thanks.
-
It's possible that the first release of zpsx is more fast that the last?
And the speed change between a compressed rom or no?
-
I'm only able to test with my C1000, as thats all I have as far as Zaurus go. But I am able to overclock it to 620MHz. Just about every game I throw at it at this overclock is fullspeed. A big help would be a page or post listing the various Zaurus' out there and their CPU specs.
The "Load Success" only means that the BIOS was loaded successfully, currently. To test if your ISO is valid, try testing it on a desktop...Windows psx emu such as PSXeven, PCSX, ePSXe, etc. Or on a Linux desktop there's PCSX I suppose. Knowing the BIN file or .Z/.table you have works on another emu pretty much lets me know it's an issue with psx4zaurus.
The CPU running at stock speed is usually a good way to test stability of a game, so that shouldn't be an issue. Overclocking the CPU will give A LOT more performance though. Games on my C1000 at stock 416MHz are slow, but fullspeed at 620MHz.
-
FF7 on my c1000 is slow in full montion video and in battle.
I run at 624mhz, no sound and without X...
However when I load a saved game, and I want turn on sound, I can hear nothing...
-
Full motion video (MDEC) is slow/jerky in most games right now. I can get that fixed soon.
Performance tip:
There's a small "trick" I have built-in to psx4zaurus. To change the playstation vsync timing use the following key combinations:
Lower VSync (more performance, possibly less stability, best at around 5000):
TAB + E
Raise VSync (less performance, possibly more stability, sometimes will get you out of instability from lowering the vsync as well):
TAB + R
Can you let me know if setting the VSync to that 5000 mark helps you with FF7 performance? Thanks!

Ok, one more request.
Are there any free/shareware/demo images available in any public place, that we can download and use to test psx4zaurus- as a reference platform?
I've had so far no luck with any of the images I've tried, and can't really tell
if its a configuration problem on my end, or if the images themselves are bad.
A reference file to test, that's *known* to work, would be really wonderful,
if any such thing may exist.
Not all of us have PlayStations at home, and not all of us have known working images, or access to them.
thanks :/

About Vsync: I use it.
I set always at 5000 (500 freeze the game) becouse seems that the performances are improved.
It's true, but (for example) during the battle in FF7 it's too slow.
Now I set 10000-15000, and the battle is very near to fullspeed and the game is very playable (without sound).
Problem that I can found: if I load a savedgame, and then I turn on audio, audio doesn't work;
in some game (like ff7) is better your previous version of psx4all (in ff7 the menu game and the char are displayed wrong).
-
sorry for the cross post, but...
I setup a wiki for psx4all on my site, go to:
wiki DOT tyrannozaurus DOT com
I know that there all ready is some info in the OESF wiki and I hope I'm not stepping on toes. I set it up before I remembered (was reminded of) the OESF wiki. If you guys would rather use the OESF, that fine with me.
I've been trying to update the compat list, and info page as I read your posts and try games of my own. Take a look, there's lots of data in it all ready.
PM me here or email me @ montanaq AT gmail DOT com if you have problems using the Wik

Darth_Sith: Are you using a PAL (UK) or NTSC (Japanese / US) version of FF7? I didn't notice the text bug in the NTSC version.
The issue with sound and save states is a known bug. It's on my "things-to-do" list for psx4all.
Antikx: Is it ok if I sig " wiki DOT tyrannozaurus DOT com " on OESF and the psx4all forum? Sorry about the lack of response lately, been very busy.

Zod I use original CD from PAL version.
With your first release of psx4all (412kb) run fine. With the last the window dialog and the menu in ff7 is broken on bottom, and the text is displayed worse.
About performance I seem that is good the version of 412kb, but I can wrong this...
-
The battle menus in FF8 don't display in the newest release.
-
Could somebody post the most recent version/whatever works with FF9 (assuming that's OK with everybody)? I don't like registering.
Thanks!
-
It says here (http://wiki.tyrannozaurus.com/ZaurusCompatabilityList?v=13dg) that FF9 works with Beta 4.3. I have 4.3, but it freezes up at the black screen right after the Square whatever it is logo. Can anybody confirm that it works with Beta 4.3, or recommend/post a beta that does work with it?
Thanks!
-
FF9 is FFIX and FFIX freezes just after the square logo like you say. I didn't see anaywhere that psx4zaurus is able to run FF9...
