Title: Linksys Wcf12 Firmare Update
Post by: VirtusRex on October 05, 2006, 04:49:25 pm
Hello,

I've been trying to apply the Firmware update for my WCF12 card, has anybody done this before? If so, how do I proceed.

Thanks,

VirtusRex

I have a WCF-12 and I've never needed to update it. It's many years old.  . it worked fine in sharp on a 5600 and now in pdaXrom on my C1000.  what trouble are you having?

I'm trying to get aircrack packet Injection working. I've read on [a href=\"http://www.aircrack-ng.org/doku.php?id=sharp_zaurus]http://www.aircrack-ng.org/doku.php?id=sharp_zaurus[/url] that their is a way to enable packet injection with Aircrack but involves using Prism2_srec to update the firmware on the WCF12 card.

Darn, I was wondering why folks would not just use pdaXrom to perform
the firmware update.  I just tried it, and it found that the hostap driver was
not compiled with PRISM2_DOWNLOAD_SUPPORT or
PRISM2_NON_VOLATILE_DOWNLOAD defined in the
driver/modules/hostap_config.h file.  I assume this is done for safety reasons?

Well, I just tried the procedure in that link, using a Windows 98 SE laptop,
and it did not work.  I made the change to the WLANNIC.INF in the
[DeviceList] section.  I used the "Add New Hardware" wizard, and
when I selected the directory containing the driver files, it complained
that it could not find a driver for the device.

Is that the only place it needs to be changed?  The reason I ask, is that
I noticed in the [WLAN_PCMCIA1.reg] there is a line with:
HKR,Ndi        ,DeviceID,0,"PCMCIA\D-Link-DCF-650W-1986"

I'm very hesitant to experiment with this stuff, especially when performing
a firmware upgrade, as I do not want to ruin my WCF12!

Unfortunately the only windows version I have access to is 98SE.

EDIT: I just found the following page, and I will try those extra steps

I ran into many problems trying to get that driver running on win98se with the WCF12.  At one
point, I could not remove the dlink 650 device from the device manager list, as it would give
me a crash of rundll.exe even after a reboot.  I finally managed to delete the device by
creating a new hardware profile.  I started again, and got the device to the point where
I would get the low-high tone, and the device manager said the device was working
properly.  I was confused as to why it said there were no drivers installed or needed.
It appears the link to that generic 815 utility program is invalid, but I found one on
another page ( http://www.zcomax.com/htm/PC-CFcards.htm (http://www.zcomax.com/htm/PC-CFcards.htm) ) which would not show
the card.  Since I was unable to get the WFC12 to work as a regular WIFI card in
win98se, I decided not to persue the firmware upgrade.

I will wait until I can get around to building a linux kernel with proper (and firmware
download capable) hostap driver and utilities, and persue the LINUX-based
firmware upgrade procedure.

If anyone knows of anything that might fill in a missing piece on win98se, or better
yet has a suitable hostap.o and/or beta1 kernel that would work on the SL-6000
please post it!

Hi,

After a lot of research, I managed to upgrade my WCF-12 firmware.

The Whax Live CD has the prism2 firmware download option turned on.
Be sure to execute the command "switch-to-hostap" on that distro, in order
to the hostap drivers.

I used the procedure documented at http://linux.junsun.net/intersil-prism/ (http://linux.junsun.net/intersil-prism/) which
has a lot of great information, and I advise following the check procedure first
(without the -f) option, to verify that the files are OK.

After the firmware upgrade, I was able to use the WCF-12 to setup a laptop
as an access point, and will try again on pdaXrom soon.
