Title: Wellenreiter
Post by: BarrySamuels on October 25, 2006, 09:14:17 am
C3100 - Standard Sharp ROM.

I'm trying to get Wellenreiter to work which it doesn't at the moment. If I click 'Sniffer', 'Start' I get the message 'Your device is not properly configured'.

If I look at 'Sniffer', 'Configure', 'Interface' I see that the Name box at the top is blank and the drop-down list is empty. Could this be the cause and what should be in there? Is there a configuration file that should include these values?

Here's how I got it working on my C1000.

First, download the Wellenreiter tarball from this page (http://www.zaurususergroup.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=UpDownload&file=index&req=viewsdownload&sid=22&min=40&orderby=titleA&show=10)
Extract the files and install them in the order shown.

Then follow these instructions (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=14986&view=findpost&p=95751) (thanks Cresho)

The only thing I had to do different was to check "Execute with root privilege".
You will still get a pop-up box telling you that you have started Wellenreiter as non-root.
Just click on "Yes" to proceed anyway.

I didn't have to configure anything, it just worked.

Works great for me.

Lucky you!

I downloaded those files, installed them in the recommended order, ticked the 'Execute with root privilege' box and started wellenreiter.

This time there was a 'wlan0' option to select in the Name box for 'Configure' so that's an improvement.

However when I start the network connection (setup as specified) and select Sniffer, Start then wellenreiter crashes.

I have also tried running it from the console and it crashes in exactly the same way. There is no error message or other indication of a fault showing on the console.

Advice welcome.

In Configure > Interface I have this:

Name: wlan0
Driver: wlan-ng

So do I.

Does wellenreiter have a configuration file somewhere?

(Are you any relation to Pooh Bear?)

There is a configuration file "Wellenreiter II.conf" in /home/zaurus/Settings

I used to be called Pooh Bear at work  other than that, no.

I found the configuration file thanks. I thought I'd rename it to force a new one to be created, which it was, but to no avail - it still crashes.

Hmmm... there must be a difference somewhere between the 3100 and 1000 file systems.
Maybe someone else with a 3100 has managed to get it working.

Good luck, hope you get it figured out.

Doug

I've just uninstalled wellenreiter and associated packages and re-installed. There is no difference and wellenreiter still crashes when the network connection is started. Oh woe is me

Most likely, it looks for the wifi in the wrong mounted drive.

I don't understand that.

No I'm running the standard Sharp ROM.

I have just discovered that if I start the network connection first and then run wellenreiter it doesn't crash and it does detect my local network.

Is there any disadvantage in doing it this way?

When I stop sniffing the light on the network CF card goes out although the icon in the bottom bar shows as connected but it obviously isn't. Should that happen?

It does pick up my local network but doesn't show an ESSID (which Kismet does) - should it show the ESSID?

Clicking and holding the network line on the display produces a 'Join Managed Network' popup which, when clicked, appears to try to run something but fails - what is it trying to run/do?

AFAICT, Wellenreiter has limited functionality (some functions are not available).
But it does detect available networks, which is all I need.

Here's my network setup:

1- Wireless - MINE ... which is encrypted and will only connect to my network
2- Wireless - OTHER ... which will connect to any unencrypted network
3- Wireless - Sniffer ... set up per Cresho's instructions.

If Wellenreiter discovers an unencrypted network, I just stop the sniffer, close the connection and exit Wellenreiter.

Then I just load my browser and connect with OTHER.
And away I go.
