But I was wrong!
The card does work and it is detected in a standard hentges install.
But, I wanted to remove all the software that I do not use. I have no wireless network, no bluetooth, no need for infrared, so I removed loads of stuff including kernel modules, now the CF card is not detected.
When I try to mount from the command line it reports that /dev/hda1 is not a valid block device.
Any thoughts about the module/software that I should reinstall.
Sorry coredump for breaking your fabulous work.

Hard to tell. You are probably missing ide_cs or some such.

On 5500 ide_cs is in kernel. Show 'cardctl ident'.

I cannot find cardctl on my collie, but I take it that this means the cf card is treated like a pcmcia device.
If so I will have to re-install pcmcia-cs.
Problem solved.
Many thanks
