Title: Skype Released For Linux

I've read about it in these forums and it seems that linux distros didn't exist so we couldn't get Skype on the Zaurus. I'm not sure if this is new at all, but I just found it. Hopefully someone of the geniuses here can do some magic and we'll have Xmas early this year!

THANKS!!!

Well, it doesn't help us, because even though skype is available on linux, it is not available as opensource so we cannot compile it for the Zaurus. But even if it were available as opensource, there would be a lot of work required to port it to the arm platform...
Although, skype is available on the Sony Mylo, so it is possible to build skype for arm but again, no source code.

:-(((

Darn, I got all excited for nothing then. How is it that there are so many clients to access AIM, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, Gtalk but none for Skype?

Because Skype is closed source.  Duh!

skype has been available for linux for well over a year; I do note that there's a new 1.3 version dated early october

our best hope is that the Sony MyLo version will run on the Z. Problem is the MyLo is quite expensive, and if it weren't for the wifi would be quite a boring device compared to the many smartphones with sliding keyboards - it's not got VGA or touchscreen.

It has more to do with the fact that the Skype protocol is not "open source". People had to work hard to reverse engineer the protocols used in the various IMs to produce the open source clients. Reverse engineering the Skype protocol is probably more difficult, and maybe doubly so because it's encrypted?
