Haven't seen this posted yet.
http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS2986976174.html (http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS2986976174.html)
Says it will be available in 1Q 2007 for about USD350 and that it will be compatible with oz, angstrom and familiar packages.
-
2.8" display with VGA!! that's incredible!
"One goal is give back to people creating this revolution. If you're going to hack on it, I'll give you a discount -- or something cool."
I like that idea, write an application for it and get a bonus.
-
this seems like something weve all been waiting for. Maybe fic will be the successor to sharp ...?
-
ill most likely buy something like this to use in conjunction with the zaurus.

So that has been mickeys secret

No, it will use the same package *format*, the packages itself won't be compatible. You can however use OE to build packages for the neo1973.
-
It will be a real nice gadget anyway!
The company has already build some linux based products.
Hopefully there 's more to come!!!
I really enjoyed the slideshow on linuxdevices.com
If the give price will persist, it is half the price of trolltechs Greenphone.
It should be possible to connect it to zaurus at least via USB. Perhaps some kind of USB network connection could be established easily.
So let's wait and see .

But that in itself is a step in the right direction, and a real coup for the OE team- congrats!
-
add a gsm/gprs adaptor or a 3G adaptor when available and it makes the flybook seem oversized and very overpriced!
-
128mb ram and 640x480 touchscreen? On an Open, Linux-based cellphone? Costs under $500 Canadian?
I think I'm in love!
They've done the smart thing and seperated out the closed modules and given them open, standard interfaces. (AT command set for the Radio, serial for the GPS)
So sorry, Treo650 - you're no longer required. I will be picking one of these up as soon as possible.
-
I may not need the trolltech greenphone now......
-
What more do you want than an affordable, hackable and open phone running our favorite OS?
Rumor has it that its OpenEmbedded support will be quite good from the get-go

That isn't a rumour anymore Holger and I had a look into their svn yesterday

How about a keypad? I don't buy this:
"Typical of Chinese phone designs, the Neo1973 sports a touchscreen, rather than a keypad"
as I don't recall seeing any Chinese phone designs which solely uses a touchscreen.
I'll wait for the BT/Wifi/3G version.
-
I'll wait for the BT/Wifi/3G version.
Same here, I need BT for handsfree, etc.
WiFi might be nice too, automatic GSM/voip switching.
Looks cool

The initial version will have quadband gsm, bluetooth and GPRS.

since not UMTS, will it support HSCD and EDGE over GSM, if not now, maybe later?
will this product's tools and programming toolkit be reasonably well documented, or will that be a community effort and permanent To-Do?
-
Well, this is much more an open source project than anything else, _however_ FIC / OpenMoko is very commited to that platform and will stay around funding one or the other activity. Think Maemo, but even more open

so, how do we form an orderly queue to buy them?

Latest rumours indicate that you buy it from the FIC webshop. See the community mailinglist for more details

I haven't been able to find any info that says it has Bluetooth. Are you sure about that?
From the website:
Hardware
* 120.7 x 62 x 18.5 (mm)
* 2.8" VGA (480x640) TFT Screen
* Samsung s3c2410 SoC
* Global Locate AGPS chip
* Ti GPRS (2.5G not EDGE)
* Unpowered USB 1.1
* Touchscreen
* micro-sd slot
* 2.5mm audio jack
* 2 buttons
* 1200 mAh battery (charged over USB)
* 128 MB SDRAM
* 64 MB NAND Flash

So, USB is a host? There is conflicting info about Bluetooth. Is it there?
I think I am interested too. What is the latest info about the release date. I am in the market for a smartphone and I think this could be it.
Will it be user (not just developer) ready at launch?

anything more substantial than this yet?
I did join the mailing lists but there was so much chatter on it I dropped out, I just couldn't keep up!

Is [a href=\"http://openmoko.com]http://openmoko.com[/url] that hard to open in your browser?
-
USB is gadget + unpowered host.
Bluetooth looks good, but I can't say for sure atm.

Any word on when, where, or how we can place our order for this phone? I've seen conflicting information, one said it would be available for order in Jan 2007 and another said February.

Thanks koen,
I'm definitely getting in line for this one. The iPhone is intriguing and I'll definitely give it a look, but the truly open nature of this phone makes it hard to pass up. And I don't have to sign a 2 year agreement to get it.
-
Confirmed bluetooth makes this one much more interesting now...

It appears as though we will have a greater choice of phone hardware platforms than the neo1973 as OpenMoko is ported to other phones. LugRadio has a very good interview with Mickey Lauer about the OpenMoko project (Season 4, Episode 1).
http://www.lugradio.org/ (http://www.lugradio.org/)
Mickey mentions that he expects OpenMoko to be up and running on all Motorola Linux smartphones shortly after the launch/release of OpenMoko. He believes it will then soon be ported to the HTC Universal which is also known as the i-Mate JASJAR, 02 XDA Exec, QTEK 9000, & the T-Mobile MDA IV.
These are all functionally the same platform and here are the specs:
- Intel XScale Bulverde 520 MHz processor, 128 MB of ROM, 64 MB of RAM
- 3.6" VGA screen, 16-bit color, 180-degree swivel screen
- Tri-band GSM/GPRS with UMTS support
- WiFi (802.11b) and Bluetooth
- Two speakers and a built-in microphone, with full duplex support
- Two cameras, a 1.3 mega pixel and a VGA camera
- SDIO slot is included
- Standard headphone jack which also supports headsets
- 1620 mAh battery
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Do those specs sound like what many of us have been desiring in a Zaurus upgrade?
I will be following this OpenMoko project very closely. If it is indeed ported to the HTC Universal platform and I am able to have access to the same array of Linux programs that I currently run on my Zaurus or I can compile them in OpenEmbedded, I think I have found my Zaurus replacement.
All I need is for it to accept the higher capacity memory cards (2gb or 4gb) and I will be very satisfied.

Congrats koen hrw and mickeyl on the dev edition phones. How about some reviews and screenshots as soon as you get 'em?

http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS7653749655.html (http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS7653749655.html)
available very soon in March, apparently (I presume this March not 2008!)... quote:
FIC will offer the Neo1973 in two packages. A $250 "Hacker's lunchbox" comprises a development board, battery, charger, shoulder strap, USB A-B cable, and a boss-looking reinforced lunchbox container.
The "Standard Kit," priced at $350 and likely available this fall, will include a phone, battery, headset, charger, case, stylus, lanyard, microSD card, MicroUSB cable, and manual.
