I'm looking for a web browser that renders better than Dillo but is faster than Firefox. I don't like Konqueror much, so does anybody have any suggestions on the matter of a relatively light browser (compiled or uncompiled) that renders fairly well and has only a few (preferably small) or no dependencies?
Thanks!

try this osb-browser here : [a href=\"http://mail.pdaxrom.org/contrib/Xromer/Beta4/]http://mail.pdaxrom.org/contrib/Xromer/Beta4/
take all packages all osb-* ipks. It is KHTML rendered (safari, konqueror) in a gtk interface. It's really fast and is working very nicely here.

That's for beta 4, and I don't see a version for betas 1, 2, and 3.

It should still run...
Try it...

I had never heard of this osb stuff until this post. I found the homepage at
http://gtk-webcore.sourceforge.net/doc/index.html (http://gtk-webcore.sourceforge.net/doc/index.html) and I get the idea that this
is flaky, and no longer progressing.
I'd be curious to know how well it works before I install it. The page mentions that
it crashes during day-to-day browsing, that more documentation will follow soon,
and at the bottom it says copyright Nokia 2004.

No idea about how it is maintained but I found it 2 months ago and I was quite happy with it. The only problem is browsing local files (that is a really big one fore me).
About Nokia, the "reason" can be found here : [a href=\"http://gtk-webcore.sourceforge.net/history.html]http://gtk-webcore.sourceforge.net/history.html. I assume they didn't pay enough the cleaning person

For me (beta1) osb browser run, but don't work.
-
Try links...
links for text-based browsing
links -g for graphical iface
What else a man could long for? Of course, there's no mouse middle-click, no
proxy manager plugin, but anyway, it is fast and reliable.
Works on C3k2 pdaXromb3 and a lot more...

Nice, sure it is but it is really fit the first requirement of Capn_Fish "render better than dillo". Shame that osb not working on your pda, perhaps because of outdated pxr version ?
-
on beta 3 I had to link libgsf XXX.113 to version .114 without really having 114. It kinda worked--rendered too big and wouldn't connect.
think the libgsf 114 from Xromer's beta 4 feed willl go in beta 3?
-
Good topic.
I guess it depends on your usage... but I find I use Dillo for 99% of the time and firefox for when I can't make Dillo do what I want it to do or find a command line work-around for when I can't make Dillo do what I want it to do.
I think I'll check out links though. I like fast! Thanks. Osage.

re osb-brower
on beta3 the libgsf 114 from Xromers beta 4 feed works fine
sadly the browser:
renders to large for the screen
doesn't connect
crashes it you try to go "home"
Ideas?
-
It has probably been tried already but what about Netfront and the portable version of opera that are available for Sharp Rom? They both work preety nice, but I've no idea about source or compatibility.

I posted this on another thread too. I am a "Dillo if it works, Firefox otherwise person".
But when I am at home I SSH into my linux box and run firefox remotely. It perfoms much better and takes a lot less memory.

So you use X11 over SSH to run Firefox. Cool. I've used X11 over SSH the other way but hadn't thought of doing it the way your doing. Thanks.

Is this what you are referring to?

yeah. I run a freenx server on my server at home ( a low watt 800mhz c3/ Debian Sarge) I can get a gui and use it over nx for pretty much the same amount of data as web surfing, though obviously the two look a bit different on iptraf.
AFAIK we have not got a zaurus pdaxrom client. Last I checked the only client around was for Old OZ (like 3.3.6) on a 5500.
there were some attempts that didn't really get much interest of follow-through over the past year or so. I guess either it was too difficult of people didn't see the point.
If you haven't played with it, give it a whirl on the desktop and monitor your traffic. I did and I was impressed.
This is a whole lot friendlier to cafe/work/other peoples connections than either vnc or a really compressed X over SSH. Not as tiny as text mode, of course. It would be a really welcome option on the Z, I think

I second that. I have a NX server at home too (the latest NX server, not the freenx release), and a NXclient Java applet embedded in a web page, so all I need to do is visit that page from any computer and I'm home. It works really well, better than tightVNC.
A NX client would be a good way to have access to a fast, full-fledged web browser from the Z, plus it would allow to do a lot more than the Z on its own (e.g. handle really big files with the Gimp, manage your P2P, etc).
Anyway, the source is available at [a href=\"http://www.nomachine.com/developers.php]http://www.nomachine.com/developers.php
There is a Qt package too, but it's for Zaurus 5xxx.
