I think it\'s about time this ZUG had a meeting, I am open to suggestions as to venue, date & time.
So anyone up for this?
tapjpa

I\'m interested, but I\'m in the Milwaukee area. I\'d be willing to drive down though.

-
I\'m in Kenosha and located kind of in the middle of everyone so far.
I\'m trying to come up with a couple dates and a location.
I\'ll post the details when I get them put together.
Jim
-
I\'m in the Northwest burbs in Illinois along the 294. I\'d be willing to come up to the dog track or Brat Stop some night. I\'m a little busy right now, but if you set a place and time, I\'ll try to get there.
-
VivianC-
Welcome to the ZUG. I was planning on next week but just found out I\'ll be traveling for work now so.....
Hopefully the week following.
Enjoy the ZUG,
Jim

Greetings all.
I\'ve just got my Zaurus and just joined the group so I thought I\'d drop in and say hi (thanks Viv, for letting me know about the group). I\'m in Lake county, Illinois so I\'m also pretty centralised. I\'m north of the border with my band quite a bit so can make a meeting pretty much anywhere in Lake, Kenosha, or Racine counties. The Brat would be my personal pick as a place to meet. Easy to get to from 94 and great food. As for days, Saturdays would be best. Tuesday is out (practice night). I could make other weeknights.
-
PS,
Glad you found it! That evens out the WI and IL members. Although, with all the time we spend up north, we are almost cheeseheads...
Viv

I was thinking how about Saturday the 14th for our first ZUG meeting? We can meet up at the Brat Stop on Hwy 50 @ I 94 in Kenosha, have some lunch and play with our Z\'s for while. Say around 12:30pm? If this works for everyone let me know. And no more cheesehead jokes or I\'ll have to start in on you flatlanders
-
I might have a doctor\'s appt Saturday morning with my wife but won\'t know until Friday. Even if I have it I should be able to schedule early enough to be at the Brat by 12:30. Gives me an excuse to drive up for Powerball tickets, that should keep her happy. I can let you know definately Friday afternoon.
Flatlander I understand, FIB I understand, can anyone explain \"puddlejumper\" to me?
Hey, I\'ve got a Z question. Back in the day when I had my old Palm III I had a nice leather pouch that I could carry on my belt. Of course the Z is about 3/4 of an inch too big for the old pouch and I\'m not having much luck finding a replacement. Does anyone have any ideas? I don\'t need anything fancy.

I\'m going to be in the Dells over the weekend so that won\'t work for me. During the week, Wednesdays are bad but most other days are fine. Weekends depends on what the wife has planned for me...
As for a case, I have a nice black and tan Piel Frama case that ran me about $50. I can hook you up with the lady on eBay who sold it to me, if she still has any.
As for Cheeseheads, I have nothing against them. Some of my good friends are Cheeseheads and my brother just graduated from Marquette. Between fests in Milwaukee, my timeshare in the Dells, my in-laws place in Sister Bay and Phantom Stanger\'s shows, I\'m about two weeks from having residency!
-
Well, if there are a couple others that are interested as well, PS if you want I\'ll keep the date open, just let me know Friday what\'s up.
I got a $14.95 Sumdex case off of Amazon that I love.
Jim
-
Hi all,
I won\'t be able to make it Saturday. I\'m told that the doctor\'s appointment is going to take several hours. Looks like I\'m locked up.
Tapjpa,
I looked at the Sumdex cases and am going to pick one out. Thanks for the recommendation
-
Well only 2 of us showed but the Brats where good and we shared alot on how we both use the Z at home and work.
Hope we get a better showing next time. I know everyone was busy.
Thanks,
tapjpa

Hey all! Well, I\'ve been posting on the ZUG since beginning of Jan, but I\'m just now finally adding myself to this group!
I live in Chicago - Lincoln Square (near Lincoln and Irving Park), if you\'re familiar. If anyone\'s interested in having a meeting at some point in the near future - anywhere from Chicago to Kenosha - I\'d be up for it!
My gear:
SL-5500 running tkcROM
Multiple SD and CF memory cards
Haicom GPS CF card
Socket Rev. G Bluetooth
SanDisk WiFi
Sharp CF Camera
I\'m planning to soon make the c860 jump, but I\'m waiting for some work expenses to be reimbursed first...
ttys!

I\'m all for it, been trying for a while to have another ZUG get together. Any other interest?
-
Ok, I haven\'t been keeping up, but I\'m interested in a meeting. Let\'s pick somewhere that has WI-FI.
-
What\'s the best way to go about organizing a meeting place? I was thinking that we could tag onto / invade one of the local LUGs.
-
Regarding WiFi, I\'ll offer my DSL\'d place up if you guys want to visit Chicago. Plenty of parking where I\'m at, although I have a basement apartment, so if you\'re over 6\'2 it may not be that enjoyable It\'s also not incredibly big, so it would depend on the number of people participating.
I\'m also rather newbie-ish with Linux, so the only available Linux \"server\" is a laptop running SuSe!
Can anyone suggest a decent public location that has WiFi availability? Maybe on derekp\'s suggestion?
-
LUNI ( http://luni.org (http://luni.org) ) always has events going on over the weekends we could try and piggy back with one of their events?
The one and only WI/IL ZUG event to date was up my way in Kenosha, only fair to have the next towards Chicago.
-
Hi everybody!
Glad to see so many people from around Chicago (I\'m located in Chinatown). AFAIK Panera Bread has free wi-fi access, but I\'ve had mixed results so far. I am definitely up for a meeting
-
Well we got several event spots anyone have a date/time in mind?
-
I\'m guessing a weekend would work best for all of us - Sunday nights are best for me as well as Fridays.
-
I could meet pretty much any day on the weekend. As long as we plan it far enough out, I could clear most any date.
I would suggest that if we plan it on a Friday, we go somewhere that\'s open relatively late and we may want to avoid Chicago or plan to meet later in the evening due to traffic.
If we do meet in Chicago, a place in Chicago that may be good is where the Windy City Linux User group meets on Thursdays:
http://wclug.org/ (http://wclug.org/)
Click on the first link - Letizia\'s Natural Bakery. That\'s on Division between Western and Damen. The place is near the expressway and there should be decent street parking nearby. I have a good friend that lives across the street, too In addition, they\'re open till 11:00 pm daily. I could check it out if anyone\'s interested.
-
Sounds good. I agree with n8a, as long as the date/time is set far enough in advance I can schedule for it
-
Great here as well. As long as it\'s fairly close to the expressway I won\'t get to lost
n8a why don\'t you set something up and let us know a date and time.
-

OK - I\'ll check out the place to gauge the seating available and to find out if the wifi connection costs anything. You guys please let me know what weekend days you\'d prefer - rank them in order of pref. I\'ll then set up a date for about a month from now, if that works-
-
According to the website, Letizia\'s offers connection from FaceFive ($3 for an hour, $8 for a day, $20 for monthly unlimited). I like the fact it\'s open till 11pm though I\'m a late-night kind of person. My prefs is Friday, Sunday, Saturday.
-
thanks yeswarchief. I checked online, and it seems that there may be some other cafes in Chicago that have free wifi:
http://www.jiwire.com/browse-hotspot-free-...icago-35392.htm (http://www.jiwire.com/browse-hotspot-free-united-states-us-illinois-il-chicago-35392.htm)
I\'ll check 1-2 out tonight to see if they\'re free, decent, and to check parking, seating and hours. Of course, I\'d like to find a nice late-night joint that has free wifi for my own use as well!
-
Here\'s another list: http://www.wififreespot.com/il.html (http://www.wififreespot.com/il.html)
One of these is located in Schaumburg and open till 11pm on Friday. I can check this one out sometime this week.

Please do - I know exactly where that\'s at. The Coffee Haus looks good, esp. being open til 11. Also, the NW suburbs should be easier for everyone to get to, park, etc.
-
Hello. I\'m in WI, but have been thinking about trekking down to Shaumburg and buying some nice Swedish furniture. If a ZUG meeting was scheduled some weekend in the near to mid future, that might be fun.
Just curious, is there anyone else in the Madison/Milwaukee region?

I\'m from the Kenosha area just south of Milwaukee and I am the WI/IL ZUG moderator.
Schaumburg area works well for me, sounds like you guys are narrowing down a spot. I\'m going to work on coming up with some \"incentives\" for showing up I\'ll post more when I got it all figured out.

If it\'s not Swedish it\'s crap! By the way, from a former alum: Go Illini!!
-
Go Illini!!
I\'m sure my badgers can eat your \"illini\" anyday and spit out the seeds.
Above guest post was mine, btw, seem to be having trouble with browser cookies today. (mmm... cookies)
-
Great. I\'ll probably check it out Wednesday/Thursday night. I know for a fact parking is much easier out in the suburbs than here in the city
-
I\'m sure my badgers can eat your \"illini\" anyday and spit out the seeds.
I don\'t think so However, in 10 head to head matchups, I would give you guys the nod this year (last year we had the nod). We don\'t match up that well, and Devin is just ridiculous!! I\'ll be rooting HARD for the big ten in the tourney this year, so I\'m a Wisky and MSU fan for the next few weeks...
I checked out the Panera on Clybourn near Armitage in the city. Not many outlets, which really hurts one\'s ability to be working there on your laptop for an extended period of time. However, the connection was very good. As an FYI - the Panera philosophy is to provide free WiFi, so this won\'t be changing soon and has been rolling out first in the midwest. Very nice!
I found a decent WiFi bar in Chicago! The Map Room on Armitage - I was there at around 4 pm, and there were several people on laptops with a beer... strange site to see! Not enough room to meet, but I\'ll have to go there sometime soon to \"work from home\".
-
I am in CoffeeHaus right now. The place is not very big - a few coffee tables, mostly couches and recliners. There are 3 computer terminals available, a large screen TV. Wireless connection is great. Zaurus picked it up right away, the signal is pretty strong. It doesn\'t require any kind of authentication (unlike Panera, where after some configuration changes I was able to surf via my laptop but not the Zaurus).
Not many outlets as far as I can see (most of these places aren\'t built to support that) so gotta charge batteries first
As far as menu selection, it is mostly beverages, hot and cold. Large CoffeeHaus mocha cost me ~$3 bucks. Not much food other than cookies and muffins.
Nice comfortable atmosphere, plenty of parking - I give it thumbs up
-
Funny enough, I am in between doctor appointments right now in Des Plaines, and I dropped by a place called Kaffeccino. There\'s seating for about 40 people, full Starbucks-type menu, plus convenient store/ice cream goods in the back - definitely your ma n pa type coffee house, although it\'s not too cheezy. For kicks, I popped in my wireless card, et voila!, a \'very good\' signal strength connection. The connection\'s wide open.
I talked to the girl at the counter, and she said that the wifi is free to use and that the place isn\'t ever ~too~ busy on the weekends, so a group of 10-12 should be just fine. This is certainly an option, and VERY close to I-294 for those from Wisconsin. The only problem is that there is only one open set of outlets, although I could certainly bring a power strip or two
If interested, the place is right in downtown Des Plaines, just to the west of the library, right behind the Metra train station off of Northwest Highway. Compared to the wifi bars and Panera Breads that I\'ve checked in the city, this place or CoffeeHaus defn get my vote! Also, I could give directions here from either 294, 90/94, or Northwest Highway since I\'m from Des Plaines.
-
n8a- That sounds great, plus I am halfway familure with the area. I\'m busy for the next week but anytime after I\'m good.
Lets set a date.
-
Update - I forgot to check hours and just called
The place opens very early, but closes at 8 on weekdays, 6:30 on saturdays, and 4 on sundays...? sorry for the oversight everyone - my vote is for coffeehaus!
i\'m free to meet pretty much anytime after next weekend. How does April Fools weekend work?
-
I\'m sitting in Coffehaus right now. Thought I check it out since I work nearby. Good strong WiFi signal, fast connection. Nice place, a little small, but I doubt our numbers are too high.
I\'d vote for April weekend, too.
-
April Fools weekend sounds good to me.
-
Fine here also, looking forward to it.
I am still trying to pull together some \"incentives\" for showing.
-
How about free a sl-6000 for every one who how comes.
I wish!
JP
-
If you willling to front the $\'s.....
-
Are we still planing on haveing a meeting?
-
Fine here also, looking forward to it.
I am still trying to pull together some \"incentives\" for showing.
Having a chance to test drive a real, live, japanese clamshell model would be incentive enough for me. Is there someone who would come who has one?

I do.
Is there a time/date set yet?
Cheers
-
I would vote for Sunday April 4th. Some time in the afternoon would be good. I don\'t know exactly where this place is, but if it is near Woodfield, there is a CompUSA and BestBuy just west of the mall.
Let me know what you all think. If we do Saturday, I can\'t make it until after 6 PM because the wife works and I have the kids.
-
April 4th sounds good to me. Which place did we agree on?
-
April 4th good here as well!

that date works for me. shall we say Coffeehaus? What time works?

How about Sunday April 4th between 1 and 1:30? I should be able to get out there by then.
Here is the link to the location:

They open Sundays at 1 PM, according to their web site. Sound good?
-
Works for me, see everyone there!
-
Sounds good. I\'m in.
-
Sorry about not giving directions - I\'ve been getting crushed at work this week.
You can of course mapquest it, but from I-294, you would defn want to take I-90 west to the Roselle Road exit. On Roselle Road, make a left (go south) to Golf Road (about 1 mile at most). At Golf Road, make a right turn and you should be there on your left.
From Wisonsin on I-90 coming east, I\'m not sure what the best exit is as you can\'t exit on Roselle, so I would recommend MapQuest or Expedia. I\'ll see you all there!
-
I swung by there yesterday. When you are heading west on Golf Road (past Roselle), there will be a \"Lee\'s Auto Parts\" on the right side of the road, and a strip mall on the left side. The strip mall has a Hollywood video on it\'s corner. Turn left just past the Hollywood Video, and it\'s in the middle of the back strip.
-
I\'ll be there too. I just got my SL-5600 last month and am a relative novice to the platform. Also, if I have to haul out to Schaumburg from Evanston, I\'ll for sure be eating at the Todai sushi buffet at Woodfield Mall while I am out there. Anyone else interested in that afterwards?

Count me in. Is any one comeing with a Cxxx model?

I think they close just after the lunch hour (arounc 2:00/2:30 or so), and re-open around dinnertime. If we\'re meeting at the coffeehaus at 1 - 1:30, we won\'t make it to todai in time. However, there is an excellent Thai restaurant a few doors down from CoffeeHaus.

The hours posted on their website list Sunday 1pm - 11pm. So it appears we\'ll be ok, always good to have a backup plan tho

Which web site did you look at? According to http://www.todai.com/pages/todai/generalinfo/hours.htm (http://www.todai.com/pages/todai/generalinfo/hours.htm) lunch is 11:00am to 2:30pm and dinner is 5:00 to 9:00pm. I called the schaumburg number, and they confirimed this.
If you want another good sushi place, if you go north-east, to algonquin and arlington hights road, there is Mitsua Maketplace (an asian grocrie store), which has packaged sushi available (fresh and cheap too) and a food court (with other japanese dishes) to eat in. Also, there\'s another sushi restaurant on 53 & algonquin.
-
Which web site did you look at?
lol, the problem is not what website I looked at, but that I didn\'t read the previous poster\'s and your message carefully!
I thought you were saying the CoffeeHaus was closed during those hours.
Never mind...
BTW, now that I actually read the posting instead of glancing at them, I\'d be up for Thai (or sushi)
-
Well, I have a particular Todai jones (I can only eat there when I get to the west coast or to Schaumburg, which happen with about equal frequency) but that needn\'t bog down the discussion here. I\'ll probably go there for lunch before the meeting then.
I\'m pretty new to the platform, so I\'ll have lots of things I want to learn from y\'all! I\'ve never flashed my ROM yet, so I might do that Sunday. I like that having free WiFi we should be able to download packages and images and generally go crazy. Should be fun.
See you all there!

Sorry guys I\'m having to drop out at the last minute. Have a kid that isn\'t feeling well.
If you get online I\'ll try to participate remote!
-
I over slept (wife took the kids to breakfast) but I\'m on my way.
-
We are here.
-
Sorry again for not showing how many people made it?
-
Five of us so far. All 5500 and 5600. Good connection and good coffee.
-
Well enjoy it while I clean up behind a sick kid
-
Hey while we have an audience how about making this a monthly thing?
-
We are up to 7. Good showing. And Jerry is here with the 750. He has become very popular.
-
We all agree on a monthly meeting if we can find some WI/Rockford places with wi-fi. We need to follow up on locations.
-
Ok, I\'ll start hunting around up WI way for places, I\'ll be near Rockford in the next few days, I\'ll poke around there as well.
-
It was a good meeting, tapjpa. Sorry you couldn\'t make it. It was nice to meet everyone in person, get out conversation that would take weeks on the board , and toss out ideas on ROMs, the next zaurus purchase, spots to meet next time, etc.
My vote for the next meeting - if we want it to be closer to those in Wisconsin - would be the Waukegan-Kenosha area.
Cheers all!
Nate
-
i missed it too, being out on my last spring break... :-/
-
forgot to mention... found great wifi place in the heart of the city - western and division - called \"Ballou\".
http://www.usrg.com/script/byrestaurant.asp?ID=613602 (http://www.usrg.com/script/byrestaurant.asp?ID=613602)
wifi is provided by sbc-yahoo, no authentication needed

Hey guys, it was good to see all of you. I would definitely like to do it again. I liked hearing about Derek\'s dual boot system, which I had never run across until I heard him talking about it. Lots of cool stuff to think about. My brain was full by the time we left, but in a good way.

Tony Olsen... I work in Schaumburg... didn\'t yet read all 6+ pages yet. Let me know the next time a meeting is scheduled. I\'m in Chicago M-F and in Iowa S-Su.
-
I\'m from the Kenosha, WI area and am currently out in the quad cities on business. We\'ll probbly cross path\'s at the end of the week
-
Im from central illinois, i was thinking springfield, anyone interested? Maybe a local coffee shop with wifi access?
-
Edwardsville/Glen Carbon IL? anywhere near there?
-
I live in Des Plaines. There's actually a coffee shop two blocks from me with free wifi
-cor-

Does any one know if/whan the next meeting will be held?
JP
-
Is this officially dead? It would be fun to get together again if anyone's up for it - but i would imagine no one will check this for ANOTHER 6 months!
ugh, oh well!

Is any one out there?
