Title: Development Halted
Post by: guylhem on November 20, 2006, 01:37:24 pm
Hello

Just a quick email to let you know I had a car accident in october, and I'm in the hospital until dec/jan with many broken bones. I've had a real net access since last week, and I first tried to sort of everything before passing the information.

As a consequence, development of the ROM has been fully halted. It also damaged the Acer N30 project I was working on.

Sorry about that. I will try to come back on the handheld linux world as soon as possible.

Guylhem

Sorry to hear of your misfortune. I have enjoyed your reviews, hacks, (even though they were on devices I don't own) and liked your 6000 rom too. I also would like to wish you a speedy recovery.

Get well soon Guylhem! While we usually don't agree on anything, your contributions to the mobile Linux are badly missed!

All the best!

It also damaged the Acer N30 project I was working on.
As Guylhems partner for distributing the Acer n30 Familiar/GPE-Linux distribution "Letux", I myself was shocked about his accident. But I was also very happy to hear recently from him that it is beginning to be better for him and that he has again network access to "be connected".

I just want to note that I will continue the Letux n30 project as good as I can. For your convenience, here is a description: http://www.letux.org/releases/Letux%20n30.html (http://www.letux.org/releases/Letux%20n30.html) and note that you can purchase SD cards through my shop on which we have preinstalled Letux.

Hello Guylhem,

Also from me the best wishes for recovery!
Although I do not know your ROM or even you too well, I am sad to hear that you will stop development. But most importantly get better soon!

Such an accident makes one think about priorities, right? And although software development is nice and helps many people, it is probably not prio no 1 in most people's life.

Hello

Thanks to you all for your kind words.

Effectively, I'm feeling better. I can now fully work with both hands, with minor pain on the right shoulder. I'm still on a wheelchair, but that's just fine for using a laptop :-)

Some of my linux hardware was damaged in the accident (note to self - in the future, you do not always carry all your handhelds with yourself), but I guess that comes second to the human "wetware" :-). As daniel3000 said, it really helps reprioritize things in your life [yet I miss hacking!]

Many thanks to dhns for continuing to support the N30. It's a really nice machine, with a great screen and fully supported by Linux 2.6 (except the sound part) + with dual boot capabilites for WinCe (either one can be installed in flash from USB, and linux can be booted from WinCe).

BTW I have found than while I was out, there were many exiting news. The OpenMoko / FIC Neo1973 looks very attractive - with or without wifi. I'll try to contribute whatever I can to such as exciting project.

Guylhem

PS: here's a picture of the car after the accident. It was a Ford (trust me). I was sitting in the passenger seat, right where the collision stuck. I will try to upload a bigger picture of the destroyed car (looks awesome !).

Ouch!  That wreck looks nasty.

I hope you have a swift and relatively painless recovery.

what (rhetorical question), exactly, did you do to get that result? attempt a kamikaze attack on a tractor-trailer?? you are lucky to be as well as you say, judging from the look of the car.

just seen the picture...  looks like a routine type of bump on the Boulevard Peripherque and barely scratched! Seriously for a moment, seeing that wreck I think you're blessed to have survived and I pray for a speedy recovery.

glad to hear from you and keep us informed as to your progress. don't worry about your PDAs, the main thing is you're still with us.

wow !!

it looks rescue team had a lot of work to take you out of that bunch of hardware (I tend to prefer software for these occasions), luckily in one piece !

Anyway, I hope you recover soon, as well as your externe.net forums, which have been 'temporary disabled' for a while !!

best regards.

Well, we were simply stuck by a car on the right handside where I was sitting. It didn't stop at the crossing. I was informed by the gendarmes that the last accident at that very spot was fatal for the guy in the passenger seat, so yes I guess I was lucky.

I don't know how long it took to to cut the metal around and get me out of the car, but to me that was long, painfull and stressfull. I wish I would have lost consciousness...

The fun part : I have no health insurance (I think I can treat myself) but due to the seriousness, the french social security takes most of the bill (17k Eur for the first 2 weeks in the hospital, includings drugs/surgery/exams etc. the next bill should arrive soon), and the car insurance should cover the difference.

That's what I like about the french system: while you are taxed on your income (variable rate, capped near 50%, everything included), if you have serious medical problems, everything is paid for you, so you won't go bankrupt.

However for small stuff, you pay between 100% and 40% of the bill, which can be covered by private health insurances (mutuelles)

I was pondering the idea of putting together a donation for Guylhem, to show our concern for him, and help him back on his feet or to get a working zaurus up again (maybe someone has a 2nd zaurus they don't want and we could all chip-in with some cash to buy it for G?)

speculatrix, I'm not sure about that. Sure playing with a new generation 3xxx could be interesting, especially for the video acceleration part, but at the same time I think the donation would be better invested if the unit was send to the OE projet for kernel improvements etc.

This sounds like you already know what you want to do as soon as you're up to it ...

Good luck,

Well then I'll try to help with the C7/8x0 2.6 kernel for OZ :-)

I already send cpu overclocking patches, 7500 keyboard map, and a X application to make fn+p emulate third click/paste,  but I don't know if they have been integrated.

well, I had been hoping that people would have expressed support by posting responses, but nearly two months on you're the first to indicate interest, so I don't think there's enough interest.

It took me two months, but I did eventually respond.  Perhaps others might as well?  Just a shot in the dark.

reading back, Guylhem said he would be happy if people donated to the OE/OZ project; I would guess that a donation in his name would be a positive thing.

there are many worthy causes for opensource software and related institutions,  sourceforge, EFF, Debian, OE, this forum itself... if everyone donated merely the money not spend on a license of MS windows home (let alone pro/ultimate), it would make a big difference.

Then just think of all the money spent on software after making that first step into the MS world.  (I don't even want to bring in the time and energy spent on fighting the piracy wars... either supporting or opposing)

The trouble is that this becomes some kind of quasi- communism vs capitalism debate that never really seems to reach a universal conclusion.  I try hard not to be anti-closed source, despite all of the distaste that it induces in me. When I fail to do so,  I try to keep it a personal decision not to be imposed on others.

I'm not so sure that the world would be better off if everything was "free" in the debian sense of the word, but I certainly feel more comfortable using things that I don't understand when the creators have given them away with (seemingly) noble intentions.

Looking again at the title of this thread fills me with a sort of desperation.  We all probably realize that these forums have been up and down lately.  I've been coming to depend on these webpages as one of my few and most reliable guides to the zaurus world.  Yet until recently, I haven't even begun to consider donating towards the maintainance of this site.

Furthermore, production of the zaurus hardware appears to have ended at the very source. This is at least a little sad to me in many ways, not the least of which is my strange obsession over this little material device.

I digress.

I just liked your idea of trying to raise funds towards some kind of gift towards guylhelm's recovery and continued work on handheld platforms.  I would be willing to donate towards that cause, and I'd like to believe that others would as well.

Hello

If you really don't want to donate to OE/angstrom or your favorite cause, you can send me a paypal for whatever you want.

That will be very welcome.

I hope I will be able to start working on such interesting projects (Linux handhelds !) next year.

Now I'm putting the focus on the "normal" life to recoup the delays this accident caused me - thesis and stuff.
