I've got loads of excel files that aren't playing very nice with gnumeric because the row and column header font sizes are too big and so I can only fit a few cells on my screen at a time. These are mongrel xls files as most started off life on the Psion 5 then got converted to xls and then many have also been opened and saved with Hancom sheet since so I'm not entirely sure what part of that chain has caused the problem but most likely its psiwins fault.
Can this be fixed, even if it means using the real Excel to do it? I can't see any option to change said font sizes under gnumeric. I can provide a sample if anybody wants to give it a go.

I have Excel 2000
I only use it for one purpose, and that is pasting *.CSV data into it.
I use it for my karaoke database.
I can try and see if I can change the header font for you.
I don't use the header function in my karaoke database, so I may not know exactly the correct way to change the header font.
Below is a screenshot of my karaoke database. You can see that I only have the headers in the default template. (A B C, and so on)
EDIT: I've been experimenting with a small snippet of my database and I found if I select all, then reduce the font, the row header fonts get smaller (the numbered headers), but the column fonts don't.

Speaking of gnumeric and limited viewable cells... Does anyone know if there is a command-line option to start gnumeric with the toolbars not visible? Everytime I start it, the first thing I do is select to not view the toolbars. I couldn't find a command line switch or an option in the app to start it this way.
I have a feeling I'm out of luck, but thought I'd ask, anyway.

On my PC I have a .gnumericrc in my home directory that is used to remember the gnumeric settings I used the last time but not on the Z and if I copy it to the Z it doesn't have any effect. Furthermore when I go to the preference dialog in gnumeric to change the font it doesn't have any effect...So I have no solution

Thanks for helping me out with this! OESF doesn't let you upload raw .xls files for some reason so I've had to gzip an example. If you try opening it under gnumeric on your Z you will notice that the column and row header fonts consume most of the sheet display area. Not good!

That is the other problem I have with gnumeric that I want to solve- hiding most of the toolbars by default. As has already been said, pdaxrom gnumeric doesn't come with a ~/.gnumericrc file and nor does it come with ssconvert, the gnumeric spreadsheet conversion tool.

Is the .gnumericrc file you copied over from your PC from the same version of gnumeric? They may have changed its layout between the two versions, if they're different.
I know a lot of programs look for a file in a certain place and if its present it will load that file and inherit its settings so I tried this with gnumeric- opened a new sheet, hid the toolbars, saved a .gnumeric sheet, closed gnumeric then re-launched gnumeric opening that file but unfortunately the toolbars returned with it.
I can't see why sashz or anyone should disable support for the .gnumericrc, sounds like that would be much more trouble than its worth. If that is the case though I guess I'll just have to compile a new gnumeric as those toolbars are too much for the Z display.

I don't have gnumeric on my Z, since it's an 'X' application or for pdaXrom
I opened your sheet in Excel in Win XP
The column and row headers are very large and reducing the font of the cells has no effect on the column/row header font size.
There may be a setting in Windows registry for this.
I'll search a Microsoft site about Excel and see if there is a solution, and report back.
I cannot find a setting within Excel to change this.

Don't bother looking into windows registry fixes as that will not fix my excel files but if you find a way to alter those fonts under excel then let me know.

I went to microsoft knowledge base and the newsgroup "microsoft.public.excel" and several excel forums.
There are a lot of forums relating to excel out there.
The knowledge base has some refrence to visual basic and changing excel's interface, but I don't know much about VB, and I don't think this changes anything except the interface in Windows.
I haven't found anything yet to change those fonts.
By the way, the word that microsoft uses for these are:
"column heading"
"row heading"
Not "header" (since "header" is used in conjunction with "footer")
This makes a search work better in the various forums and newsgroup and online help.

I just took a look at the font / header issue... View->Zoom... and change the zoom level to something less than 200%.
Otherwise, I was going to suggest exporting to a .csv in order to lose all the formatting. This is an easier fix, though.

I just opened your example in Picsel Browser on my Zaurus, and it looks like it's in Landscape.
Maybe try opening it in gnumeric and switching it to portrait.

I have fixed the toolbar problem under gnumeric by upgrading the current pdaXii13 gnumeric to v1.6.3 from the beta3 feed- I had to upgrade a few other libraries after updating gnumeric but I can't remember their names- the console will tell you that
