Title: wireless lan stats
Post by: Anonymous on March 05, 2004, 10:31:28 am
Hi,
Im wondering about signal /quality you tend to get from anyone with linksys wcf12 card or other.

I have this card with zynergy and looking at wireless lan stats in another room (say 50\') from ap I get signal quality typically around 33% (91) setting with quality ranging from 0-10 very low , kind of strange.

Right next to ap, signal only goes up to 60% (154 setting) with quality of 92 (100%).

1) do other roms (have wireless lan status) too?
2) what is your average signal rating?
3) if you put the zaurus right next to your ap, what is the signal % now?
4) do you ever exceed 60%?

The top 2 things I am deriving is sensitivity of the wireless card, and if the program is in fact correct in determining signal strength. Also, if you want to find rogue aps, you can run kismet find ap name, and walk around with it, and wait til quality goes up to near 100%.. right?

Hi,

I have a WCF12 that I use with my sl5600

Right next to the AP my signal is 100% and quality is between 97 and 100%

About 50 feet away it starts to dip to about 70%

are you using the wireless app from zynergy too? (Guess same as sharp rom). At work , it maxes out at 60% signal too., work is linksys and at home a netgear..

Nope, I am using tkcrom.  I have used Zynergy before too though and am pretty sure the signal was about the same as I have now...

My home router is a linksys befw11s4

I\'m not sure if it makes any difference, but I am not using dhcp.

I will try with static ip as well. Strange that the signal is only 60% at both home and remote top right on top of a/p but quality changes to 100% when its on top of it. Makes me wonder what the signal problem is. I\'ll write back and report what happens when using static ip.

Thanks for reply

Btw, if i may ask, what do you like about tkcrom over zynergy? I havent played with tkcrom yet...

Hi,
Checked even with static maxes out directly at 60% (i think it was 154 signal strength numerically). So either the wireless monitor has a bug, or my wireless card is only pulling down 60% of signal ????

I bought a c760 a couple days after I installed the tkcrom and my sl5600 has been neglected.  If I was still using it I would reinstall the zynergy rom.  tkcrom really doesn\'t have any advantages.  It did feel a little faster at times and it has a nicer feel to it, but zynergy is much more stable IMO.

Tkcrom always gave me a problem coming out of suspend if I was using samba, which I use allot.  It would come out of suspend, but then be very slow and give me an error message in the panel saying something was wrong with my connection.  The only problem I have seen in Zynergy is the problem with qinstall, otherwise it is very solid.

Oh by qinstall you mean the gui right] Yeah I gave up on that and always do a ipkg install ..... , tried using qtopia gui and it just exited for the packages I tried using it with.

If you ever get to looking at sl-5600 , let me know what you see with wireless settings. Im going to search down another ap. If that one also shows 60% (that would be 3) , I think its a miscalculation with the program.

If anyone knows name of the wireless app can I call comand line and get diagnostics????

I use this card on an C860 with the latest Cecko ROM.  My AP is an netgear MR814v2 and I use 128bit encryption. The driver is prism2_cs.
I\'m a whooping 5 meter from my AP (in another room) and have trouble connecting. Even my orinoco gold card in my laptop performs better than is.
I have been able to connect a few times, which does show it is possible. But it is not really reproducable. Its hard to be sure but it looks like that pressing the card gives better results. Maybe that is because my hard affects the antenna? Who knows.

I also tried the hostap drivers, which didn\'t help. dmesg shows a lot of errors messages and timeouts, and the signal strength indicator didn\'t update.
Lets not even get started on the battery drain. The large battery (1700mAh) drains in less than an hour of experimenting.

So not much joy really. :? Any tips? Alternatives?

Update: just tried it with the oz-3.3.6pre1 ROM (which uses hostap_cs). It has a nice signal strength indicator on the taskbar. For a while it showed the AP ESSID but with zero signal strength. Then for some unknown reason it suddenly locked in and the signal was 80%. I could walk around the house no problem. Then after loosing the signal I couldn\'t get it back.
Go figure. :?
Could this be that linksys-netgear are not compatible?

Other people\'s experience with this card is greatly appreciated.

I have a netgear AP and a ambicom wl100c nic. I\'m using the standard Sharp ROM v1.32 in a SL-5600.

I get 100% strength and 98% -100% quality right next to AP. About 25 feet away (two rooms) I get 40% strength and 20% quality. Card very easy to setup (worked right out of box), Not very impressed with its ability to pickup APs.

Hi,
interesting to the ambicon user two posts back, that might be indicative that the zynergy rom wireless applet maxes out at 60%. Hmmm, is there any oher utility that can run on this rom, that might indicate the wireless strength to do a comparison basis?

Also with zynergy rom, were you able to patch the special 1.3 kernel patch? I tried doing the update but it just asked me to reset and didnt put it in, called it zImage.bin and updater.sh was there too in cf.

Just got the wireless working on my Z!  Love it, mostly, but even with "-noimages" selected in Opera I yearn for the days when Lynx was usable for low-bandwidth connections.

With my built-in wireless connection on a 128-bit WEP key, I get almost 100/100 (strength/quaity)  at a few feet from the linksys router.  From there it's a linear drop to 30/4 at about 60 feet an severl walls away.

I maintain a love/ hate relationship with this built-in beybord.   :-)

I have an Ambicom wireless card and a linksys router, i am having the same problems, including frequent drops from the network, i am starting to suspect that it is just that wifi card, but after looking at all these posts im not so sure anymore, also when i look next to the SSID it shows the name of my ssid with a bnch of garbled characters next to it, they are constantly changing...
