You guys are way too fast
I don\'t know how that happened but somehow an intermidiate ROM build got out. Sorry for that. The latest ROM is available here:
http://www.zaurususergroup.com/modules.php...q=getit&lid=193 (http://www.zaurususergroup.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=UpDownload&file=index&req=getit&lid=193)
Helvetica Italic Fonts have been removed form ROM and repackaged:
http://www.zaurususergroup.com/modules.php...q=getit&lid=194 (http://www.zaurususergroup.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=UpDownload&file=index&req=getit&lid=194)
HostAp wireles drivers are available here:
http://www.zaurususergroup.com/modules.php...q=getit&lid=195 (http://www.zaurususergroup.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=UpDownload&file=index&req=getit&lid=195)
The new ROM entry should appear in the ZUG Downloads area soon. For now use direct links.
Below is the contents of the readme file. Have fun.
PS: Dont worry about words \"at least\" in ragards to partition size. Exactly 26 Mb is enough

IMPORTANT: This ROM requries a flash partition at least 26 MBytes in size!
Make sure to repartition your internal flash before updating ROM!
Installation:
1. Extract the 3 files - initrd.bin tools.tar updater.sh - to the root of your CF or SD/MMC card.
2. Make sure that Zaurus isn\'t plugged into AC power.
3. Remove battery for at least 5 seconds.
4. Replace battery (replace battery cover, lock cover), plug in AC power.
5. Press and hold the \"OK\" button on the keyboard.
6. Turn the power on, you should see the Japanese service menu.
7. Now Plug in the Power Cord. (You will get an error if it isn\'t plugged in!)
8. Select option 4 (flash/update).
9. You then have four options (1. USB, 2. CF, 3. SD, 4. Back)
10. Choose either option 2 or 3, depending on which media you put the files on.
11. Select \"5 Flash repartition\", enter at least 26 when prompted for root partition size.
12. Flash will be repartioned and Zaurus will reboot.
13. Repeate steps 2-10 again and wait for the menu start menu.

Moving to new thread as requested since this the the \"right\" version
Is it possible to backup the previous Cacko QT ROM, flash the new one (after repartitioning to 26 meg) and then recover from the prior backup?
TIA,
Mike

Is it possible to backup the previous Cacko QT ROM, flash the new one (after repartitioning to 26 meg) and then recover from the prior backup?
No, I would not recommend doing that. Tthe ROM structure has changed from previous versions. Sorry, but you\'ll have to reinstall your applications.
However, you can save your settings but manualy backing up /home/zaurus/Settings folder and then restoring it. This is safe.
Also, you can back up your PIM data by saving /home/zaurus/Applications/dtm folder and restoring it on the new ROM.
-
This is for the C7xx/8xx series only? Looks very interesting.
-
I\'ve installed it and think it is great.
1 bug I have found: My clock in the panel somehow changed into Japanese numbers. I am not sure why it happened, or even when, but I am sure it was english when I first installed the rom.
Rebooting fixed the panel clock, but this could be an annoying problem if it happens too often.
Great work team Cacko, thanks
-
will this work on an american sl-5600?
thanks, and good work!
-
this isn\'t an actual problem... probably just a quirk with me... but the icon for the overclocking is so cool (in my mind) that I want to use and play with it. It reminds me of my old Saab with a turbo charged engine... it was great to actually feel the turbo kick in...
oh well... I don\'t dare overclock my precious 760...
-
Flashed it using 26 megs. and all is working great!
I\'ll repeat my post on the intermediate build:
The new ROM looks great. I used 30 megs, no problems. And it\'s a lot faster. GPRS CF installed fine. This is the first time I tried Opera, since it was always slow compared to Netfront. But Opera 7 is looking good.
Well done Cacko team! You are the best!
Now, who is Daniela?
-
This is for the C7xx/8xx series only?
Yes, it\'s only for C7x0/8x0.
Now, who is Daniela?
Actualy, I don\'t know. But I bet sash does
oh well... I don\'t dare overclock my precious 760...
Actualy, it\'s pretty safe to overclock PXA255 processor.
-
sorry maslovsky, yesterdays rom was what sash uploaded to my webserver, i just passed on the files and links. Ill change the link on myserver to the new urls so noone will download the old one by mistake.
Sorry guys, I offered my server to sash for distribution (a few people were anxious to try the rom), woke up the next day and found he had uploaded those files so i posted. Sorry if it did anything bad to anyones machines :-(
I guess i\'ll stay out of the way of releases next time.... i was just trying to help.
-
sorry maslovsky, yesterdays rom was what sash uploaded to my webserver, i just passed on the files and links. Good work on the kernel!
Actualy it was me who uploaded the files, but they were ment for sash, for testing.
Anyway, I think now we have cleared things out

I am still getting the strange \"ghost\" effect on my screen with this rom, but it looks like I am the only one. does anyone have any idea why my c760 is so special?

Careful with that comment...see the following:

http://news.com.com/2009-1040_3-253289.html (http://news.com.com/2009-1040_3-253289.html)
and this link that makes specific reference to a PDA that runs XScale: http://www.viewsonic.com/products/pocket_p...pocketpcv35.htm (http://www.viewsonic.com/products/pocket_pc_pocketpcv35.htm)
Where it says the following in the warranty about the XScale processor:
1-year limited warranty on parts and labor. Overclocking Warning - Intel® processors are validated and supported only when they are operated at their factory rated settings. Operating a processor faster than it was designed (overclocking) can cause permanent damage to the processor, and possibly other system components including the motherboard. Other negative results are possible including the inability to boot or calculation errors. Operating a processor outside of specification will likely shorten the life of the processor, and can also void any available product warranty. Overclocked processors can product unpredictable results or system instabilities, which might not be readily apparent. The life of the processor may also be shortened. The expected frequency is the frequency at which ViewSonic warrants the reliable performance of the processor. Damages caused by overclocking are not covered under warranty.

Frank
Try to do a \"echo 75 ] /proc/driver/w100/fastsysclk\" from console as root.
Let me know if it helps.
-
2 Guest: So what? Yes we know that overclocking shortens processor life - it work only for say 10 years instead of 15. Actualy even Intel itself overclocks its processors - how else do you name selling the same processor with a different multiplier? Pentium 4 2.4 and Pentium 4 3.0 have abs0olutely no difference other than multiplier. But look at their prices...
I\'ve been overclocking elaost everything all my life - from Pentium 75 to my GeForce4 Ti...
It\'s always up to you - overclock or not...

Interesting...
I\'m thinking this might make easier to load another ROM on SD; or am I getting way too ahead of my newbie self? At this point, wouldn\'t it be great to be able to dual boot from Qt to pdaXrom and back with out reflashing & reinstalling everything?
There were several a threads in devnet on this topic, sigh...
Anyway, great work sashz & company! This is the best Qt ROM so far, love the qkonsole & kernel with wireless & monitoring mode. maslovsky, nice work on the kernel. It definately seems to run faster (with default clock).
Cheers,
Jerry

Give this a cool name like the other rom PdaX ...nice work folks!

You said \"Actualy, it\'s pretty safe to overclock PXA255 processor.\" which really is not a correct statement. This is a far cry from saying \"It\'s always up to you - overclock or not...\". I simply disagreed with your comment that it is safe based on hard data as shown in the posts. Others have found that thier Z gets warm when overclocked. Perhaps for someone like you, its not a problem to \"burn out\" a Z as you can just go buy another one. However for many users on this site, they scrape together coins and work hard to afford a CXXX. So to release software that has the potential to damage a user\'s hard earned Z, its probably much more responsible to say \"It\'s always up to you - overclock or not...\" rather than \"Actualy, it\'s pretty safe to overclock PXA255 processor.\" Remember, if someone\'s Z has a melt down (which you have no idea whether it will or not - and guaging by its warm temperature and lack of ventilation, I would assume you are more wrong that right on this point), are you going to come back and say you never said it was \"Ok\" to overclock? Just trying to be responsible here, thats all
-
Lets not argue here guys.
Overclocking carries a small risk, agreed.
The default install of this rom *DOES NOT* overclock your cpu, it only gives you the ability to do it. You also have to use a utility(provided in the rom) to do this, so it can\'t be done by accident.
A 10% or 15% increase, especially on a temporary basis will very rarely destroy anything, only where the part is of a lower sytandard in the first place.
Don\'t forget you can also *underclock* the cpu too, save battery power and prolong the life of you chip, great for ebook reading.
Guest, you have pointed out the dangers, thank you for that. This rom simply makes that choice available to more people.
Manufacturers use these disclaimers to stop people doubling their cpu speed without extra cooling, and then taking a molten bit of plastic back and asking for a refund.
Peter.
-
Peter,
I agree on all points. I had concern that the author was stating it was \"safe\" to overclock, and I think it was irresponsible to state that, thats all I was trying to point out. Keep in mind, there are lots of n00bs on this site and when a person of authority makes a claim like this, I think its not appropriate. I\'m just trying to help out
-
good, I am glad we are all freinds
I really apreciate the work that the cacko team has put into this rom. I would not have a c760 now if it wasn\'t for this board, and the constant supply of new sorftware/roms to play with.
I wil use the overclock facility, but only for apps that really require it, not all the time.
It is good to point out potential dangers to people who may not know better, but please do this constructively. There is nothing worse for a developer than to have his latest release torn to bit\'s and labeled dangerous when the risks are very low, especially when the feature is turned off by default.
To the Cacko team, another excellent rom. keep up the good work but maybe a disclaimer pointing out some of the risks to using the new features may be a worthwile addition to the readme.
Installing any software, especially a new rom, can be risky, but imagine the risks the developer has taken in order to produce this rom/software for our benefit, and he\'s not even charging for it either.

Well, hold on now. This is where we disagree. Nobody tore his bits and labeled any of his code as dangerous. I labeled his incorrect assumption of calling overclocking \"safe\" as dangerous. His statement and assumption were completely incorrect and I backed it up with data. I fail to see where it was not done constructively. I simply pointed out that he should watch his comments as they were not responsible. It is understood that his code releases are welcomed by the community. However, calling over clocking \"safe\" was plainly wrong. Had he originally stated that he has used over-clocking and has not personally encountered any problems and that there may be risks involved with over-clocking, then there never would have been an issue. But calling it \"safe\"? That was out of line.

I have two comments:
1) i think the 3rd link (the hostap drivers) is bad on the download at the start of this thread. maybe it should be http://www.zaurususergroup.com/modules.php...q=getit&lid=195 (http://www.zaurususergroup.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=UpDownload&file=index&req=getit&lid=195)?
2) I was going to comment on the overclocking thing, but I think that topic should die where it is.
this is a lot less typing anyways

Thanks for the call out. I changed the links to the ZUG Downloads entries to help track downloads and obviously muffed it up
It\'s fixed now.
I agree with your second point... enough said.

I flashed my C860 with the new ROM and it great except for one thing. The C860 is no longer recognized as a disk drive device when you connect it to your PC using the USB cable. Is there a way to fix this in the setup screens?
-
2 Guest: You stil did not convince me (and could not). It is my personal opinion that it is safe to overclock Zaurus. Im not forcing anyone to agree with me or use this feature.
And what does that statement mean that I can afford trashing my zaurus and buy a new one? I work hard earning doing my living and you better think before posting something stupid.
BTW, Is Guest your first or last name?
-
yes, this worked! so what does it do?
Frank
This changes the refresh rate of the video chip from 100 (default in new ROM) to original 75.
You\'ll have to do that after every boot, so you may want to put this in a startup script, for example /home/QtPalmtop/qpe.sh.
Interesting...
I\'m thinking this might make easier to load another ROM on SD; or am I getting way too ahead of my newbie self? At this point, wouldn\'t it be great to be able to dual boot from Qt to pdaXrom and back with out reflashing & reinstalling everything?
Yes that would be a nice feature. Most important though is that the kernel must be compatible with both systems, because you cannot easily switch it without reflashing. I hope to convince sash to keep X11 and Qtopia ROM kernels compatible, if not the same.
Changing root file system to point to a different location (removable media or any other place) is not a big problem.
-
strange thing: why does www.cacko.biz not say anything about this new rom?
where are the docs except here??? I\'ve never flashed my Z (bought wiht previous sash rom) so i really need to have a LOOOOOOOOOT of docs.
For exemple, why should i resize my partition ??
If i don\'t like this rom, will the re partitioning be a pb ???
Can i reach network via usb ??????
Any advice is welcome.
-
when you download the rom there is a step by step instructions on reflashing in the \"read me\" . youll need to repartition to 26 mb. heres a quick recap...
Info about installation and FAQ look on our site: http://www.cacko.biz (http://www.cacko.biz)
13. Now select \"1 Install new ROM\" and wait - Zaurus will reboot.
good luck !!!

Flashed my C700 with the new ROM - looks great as usual!
One question. I\'d like to use my Symbol wireless card with it - it\'s recognised when I plug it in, and I\'ve configured a standard WiFi network for it, but I get \"connection failed\" whenever I try to use it. Is there something else I need to do to get this working? It worked fine under OZ 3.3.5 in the same C700, so I know the hardware\'s all fine.
Thanks.
-
I noticed that new ROM lacks Russian phonetic keyboard layout (it was included in intermediate release). Any chance to post that file somewhere to be available for download???
I have to comment - you guys are doing EXCELLENT job creating these new ROMs. Thank you very much!
-

And what does that statement mean that I can afford trashing my zaurus and buy a new one? I work hard earning doing my living and you better think before posting something stupid.
A) I am not attempting to convince you of anything. You did not state it as an opinion, you stated it as a fact. You were wrong. You did not say, \"its my opinion that..., but use at you rown risk.\" You said \"Actualy, it\'s pretty safe to overclock PXA255 processor.\" That looks like a factual claim to me. That \"fact\" is simply incorrect.
The statement about affording to trash the Z...was it not you who said you overclock lots of things? Surely if you have been doing it for so long and overclock so many items, you must have trashed something. You say you take the risk on your machinery, so you must understand that when you trash it, you need to get another one. If you see all of these risks and take them, then you also understand the consequences. This means if you trash your computer, you will likely buy another one. For someone who cannot afford these items, they would likely not take the risk. Just an assumption I took by your own words. Perhaps an incorrect assumption...but by your desire to take risks, I would doubt it.

Change the setting in PC link to Storage.

Nope, that doesn\'t seem to help. When I insert the Symbol card, it\'s recognised and the network globe icon appears, but when I click on it to start the network up it says connection failed, even when I\'m right next to my wifi AP. Works fine under OZ, so there must be something about the software I\'m not doing right. Any ideas?
-
Snowy... my bad. Add your wireless card, and then add a LAN card. Make sure the Lan card is checked and the Wireless Lan isn\'t. Then click on connect. A popup box will come up asking what service you want to use. Choose your WiFi card. Then it should connect.

I have created a new thread in the C7x0 Hardware forum to deal with overclocking, you can find it here: http://www.zaurususergroup.com/index.php?n...c&p=13033#13033 (http://www.zaurususergroup.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&p=13033#13033)
Any further posts regarding overclocking in this thread will be deleted. We need to remain professional.

Uncheck the autoconnect boxes in the network applet.

Thanks CoreyC. Got it working by doing this , but also I\'d installed the hostapp wireless drivers ipk which was preventing it from working! Once this was removed, the card came up. What\'s the hostapp wireless ipk for?

Has anyone been able to get Wellenreiter working with the new ROM? If so, how did you do it. I thought it would work because the new ROM is supposed to have wireless support in the kernel, but no luck for me.
-
I\'m in the market for a new machine... fastest cpu possible
should I get 3.x+ GHZ pentium or opteron?
should I overclock a slower CPU? Oh, z related? this is so I can do xrom SDK.

There is no such layout available, but you can create it from the russian-jcuken. Make a copy of /home/zaurus/Applications/cyrillica/russian-jcuken and remap the keys.

I\'m in the market for a new machine... fastest cpu possible
should I get 3.x+ GHZ pentium or opteron?

This what I do - I buy a Pentuim 4 2.4C, good DDR400 memory and a good motherboard with overclocking support (ex. ASUS P4P800). Then I set the main bus to 250 Mhz, and bus/memory divider to 2:3. This makes 2.4 run at 3.0 and memory still runs at 400 Mhz.
Now compare the prices for Pentuim 2.4C and 3.0

Has anyone been able to get Wellenreiter working with the new ROM? If so, how did you do it. I thought it would work because the new ROM is supposed to have wireless support in the kernel, but no luck for me.
The ROM has wireless extentions enabled in the kernel. But they are only supported in orinico/spectrum drivers. Most cards still use default wlan-ng drivers, which don\'t support wireless extentions. To make your card use orinico driver, you need to comment its definition from wlang-ng.conf file and add it into hermes.conf file. This file is located in /etc/pcmcia and renamed to .hermes.conf by default.
Or better install hostap drivers package.
To make wellenreiter work, make sure you run it as root (tap & hold its icon and selecr \"Run as root\" option) and start it when there is an active wireless connection.
-
maslovsky--Many thanks for your great work and help. Have you actually tried and been successful in getting Wellenreiter to work with the new ROM using the instructions you posted above? When I install host-ap drivers my wifi stops working all together. When I uninstall them everything is fine once again. Perhaps you are using a different version of Wellenreiter. Could you please point us to the version you installed. A number of us are really trying hard to get Wellenreiter working with the new ROM, but so far we have no luck. Thanks so much once again.
-
When I install host-ap drivers my wifi stops working all together. When I uninstall them everything is fine once again.
Me too. I guess this depends on the card you\'re using. I\'m using the Buffalo Wi-Fi, and installing hostap doesn\'t work.
-
mas: thanks.. I\'ll compare (soon).
ok, latest -- real -- qt rom flashed... on the 700. the hostap wireless drivers breaks usability for my dlink660w.
the overclocking power save works, and it is slow... the default 250 works. all of the others lock the machine.
I\'ll go post in the hardware section more.
-
qt rom flashed without any pb!
But still unable to conect via USB neither tcp/ip nor usb storage under mandrake 9.2. But it must come from me as it never worked anyway with the previous rom
Any idea?
-
still unable to conect via USB neither tcp/ip nor usb storage under mandrake 9.2
Have you enabled usb storage in the pclink app (in the settings tab).
If so, it may be your mandrake box that needs tweaking.

Regarding HostAp drivers - I\'ve tried them with the two cards I have - Pretec and Ambicom. They worked fine.
What exactly goes wrong with HostAp drivers? Does your card gets recognised? Does it connect to to an access point without WEP? If you use DHCP try to increase DHCP timeout in wlan-ng.opts file, in qpewlan0 section.
Also, as I said you may want to try orinico drivers instead of default wlan-ng:
Uninstall hostap drivers, go to console and do:
su
cd /etc/pcmcia
mv wlan-ng.conf .wlan-ng.conf
mv .hermes.conf hermes.conf
/etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia restart
Then reinsert your card.
Let me know if orinico drivers work better.
-
the overclocking power save works, and it is slow... the default 250 works. all of the others lock the machine.
Sorry, but there is no garantee if overclocking wil work for for a particular processor.

I finally decided to install a new ROM and choose slc7x0-Qtopia-1438050304. All is well except the the Zaurus can only see my Viking 256MB SD card as Read Only. I tried reformatting it via my PC but all to no avail. I can read and write using my PC. It was working with the default Sharp ROM. Can anyone tell me how to fix it so I can write to my SD Card?
Thank you.
-
Some people/had similar problem with Sharp ROM. Search these forums - there are topics on such issue.
-
rlackey,
What did you format your card to? if it was fat32, then try formatting it to fat (which is fat16).
-
Thanks. I have tried both FAT and FAT32. After reformating, anything I put on the SD is invisible to the C700. I will do a search to see if I can find any other info. If you have any ideas, they would be welcomed. Thanks, Richard
LATEST - I did a fsck on it and it is ALIVE. Thanks
-
su
cd /etc/pcmcia
mv wlan-ng.conf .wlan-ng.conf
mv .hermes.conf hermes.conf
/etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia restart
Then reinsert your card.
Let me know if orinico drivers work better.
Yes, it works!
I just had to add the Buffalo card to hermes.conf, and welllenreiter works..
Thanks Mas!
-
tamarian--Please explain a little more about what you did. Did you comment the Buffalo card out of the wlan-ng.conf file? Did you rename wlan-ng.conf to .wlan-ng.conf? Did you add the Buffalo card to the .hermes.conf and specify that the orinico drivers should be used for it? Did you rename .hermes.conf to hermes.conf? Finally did you restart using the /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia restart command? Thanks for your help.

Yes
I followed the instructions:
su
cd /etc/pcmcia
mv wlan-ng.conf .wlan-ng.conf
mv .hermes.conf hermes.conf
And then added my card info (obtained through cardctl ident) to hermes.conf:
card "BUFFALO WLI2-CF-S11"
manfid 0x026f,0x030b
bind "orinoco_cs"
and finally:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia restart

I tried what tamarian suggested but it wouldn\'t work for me. I have a SanDisk wireless card. When I make the change tamarian suggested my card isn\'t recognized at all, so I can\'t even connect to a regular network. Is it possible that some cards simply can\'t use the orinoco drivers which the kernel requires with the hermes.conf file? If that is likey the problem let me know and I\'ll go out and buy another card. Thanks.

Doesn\'t appear to do that for me. Do you have the Music Player set as Fast Load?

If your card is not recognised then you need to add it to /etc/pcmcia/hostap_cs.conf (if using hostap drivers) or hermes.conf (if using orinico drivers) and then restart pcmcia (/etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia restart)
If you use orinico drivers, make sure to follow instruction supper in this thread.
If you use hostap this is handled by the install script.

First double or even tripple check that you did not make a typo when adding card entry to the config file.
Then after you inserted the card do a lsmod command from console and see if it displays hermes, orinoco and orinico_cs modules loaded.
Then see if you have eth0 interface by typing iwconfig.
Also look for eny suspision error messages in dmesg command output.
At this point you should be able to make regular network connections.
And yes, it is possible that some cards are not supported by orinico drivers, but I cannot tell which ones.
And finally try doing the same with hostap drivers - add the entry into hostap_csconf file.

I installed the new ROM and I have a small problem with the size of the type face displayed in the Konsole program. I clicked on the magnifying glass in the Konsole (running as root) and somehow got the type size increased to 36 (big!). Now it won\'t let me change the type size to anything else in the Konsole program. Whenever I click on any other type size the program just closes and kicks me out of Konsole. Other than that Konsole seems to work fine. How can I change the Konsole type size back to something smaller? Is there some file where this setting is stored that I can manually edit? Thanks.
-
I forget if I clicked and held down... or clicked twice.... or kept clicking (past 72?) and it went back to microscopic.
also, qt --] zoom out.... it works!
Scott
-
I can\'t get the type size to change in Konsole following ScottYelich\'s suggestions. It just seems stuck at 36 and whenever I try to change it I get kicked out of Konsole. Isn\'t there somewhere this setting is stored so that I could manually edit it? Thanks.
-
and here I thought I had a corner on computer quirks.
Scott

use the hardware zoom buttons (fn+1 and fn+2) to zoom in and out on the fly.
Peter

Hardware zoom buttons won\'t work for me in Konsole. They work everywhere else, however. Konsole is jus plain stuck with a 36 pt character set. That setting must be saved in some file so I can manually edit it.

I am still trying to get Wellenreiter working with the new Cacko 1.20 ROM. I got some new ipk files via javab0y, but they don\'t seem to work. I am using the Ambicon CF1100 card. I can get the card to work with the wlan-ng prisim drivers and, by doing the file switching technique outlined above, they will also work with the hermes file and the orinoco drivers. Wellenreiter says my card isn\'t configured correctly no matter which set I use. Both sets work for regular connections and kismet. I tired the host-ap drivers but my Ambicon card won\'t work for any connection with host-ap. Does some script need to be run to activate host-ap. Any ideas on how to get Wellenreiter working would be appreciated. I heard a new distribution compiled for the Cacko ROM should be out in a few days--is that true?
-
A very stupid question:
I installed the intermediate built of 1.20 ROM (It\'s very nice!!!) and I wrote some contacts, TODO and appointments in PIM applications. Now I would install the official release. Can I do a backup, install the definitive built and restore my datas without problems or can I copy in the SD the files made by the PIM applications and then restore them?
In the last case, what and where these files are?
Thanks for helping a *REALLY* newbie!

I\'m here again...
I use a BT CF by DAIKOM (detected as CSR Bluecore 2 UART adapter) and I set a GPRS connection via my Siemens S55 for dial-up using Setting/network. It seems that it\'s all Ok. The applet says \"connected\" and pressing \"i\" button it gives right connection params (DNS, GW etc...), but if I try to use mail or browser (Opera or NF), I can\'t access to internet. NF, for example, says \"TCP write error\". Anyone can help me?
Thanks again, M.

If you installed the new cacko QT rom from this thread, then it uses qkonsole which does support the hardware zoom buttons, or at least it does on my c760.
The conf file is Qkonsole.conf in /home/zaurus/Settings.
The mapping of the euro key to fn-5 breaks the use of fn-5 to switch between fullscreen and windowed mode however. I will have to try keyhelper again.

I am still trying to get Wellenreiter working with the new Cacko 1.20 ROM. I got some new ipk files via javab0y, but they don\'t seem to work.
I\'m using welenreiter 0.9.9 from this feed:
http://www.vanille.de/feed/sharp/ (http://www.vanille.de/feed/sharp/)
Make sure to start wellenreiter when you have an active connection, because wellenreiter cannot handle a suspended card. Or do from console:
su
cardctl scheme qpewlan0
cardctl reset
..and then start wellenterier.
I am using the Ambicon CF1100 card. Well, I heard that too from Mikey. He told me he was going to build 1.0.3 this weekend. Obviousely that did not happen...

The best would be to sync with Windows before flashing an updated ROM. After flashing you sync again and you\'ll get your PIM data back.
If synching is not a option, you can save /home/zaurus/Applications/dtm directory and then coy it back to the new ROM.

Actualy even Intel itself overclocks its processors - how else do you name selling the same processor with a different multiplier? Pentium 4 2.4 and Pentium 4 3.0 have abs0olutely no difference other than multiplier. But look at their prices...
In the \"old\" days I was told that the chips went through a quality check and the ones with the better qualtity got the higher clock rate. That was the risk then, see how far you could push your own hardware. I don\'t know how it\'s done now.
What I don\'t really get in all these horror scenarios: don\'t people actually measure the temperature? How can you burn up your Laptop etc? They just overclock the hardware and leave it alone? :?:

All was going well (Cacko Qtopia ROM) ... but the Package Manager has developed a problem. It won\'t install packages anymore ... I get \"ipkg says something went wrong. Sorry\". Even if I uninstall a package which was previously installed, it won\'t reinstall. Does anyone know how to fix this? A Reboot does not help.
Thanks

run ipkg install blah
manually, answer the questions... when it\'s done, go back to the gui version..

Has anyone had a problem with Windows not recognizing mass storage correctly with Daniela?
-
Yupp.
No sweat.
Open up the pc-link-applet, select network, press ok and plug your zaurus into some linux or windows box. Wait a moment until the Z has initialized the network and stuff, then unplug it again, reopen pc-link and select storage. That\'s what worked in my case. The problem seems to be that in \"virgin\" (just installed) condition, the storage_fd module doesn\'t seem to load.
Good luck,
Abed

Is there any home page for this rom (well... except here of course!!)?
www.cacko.biz has become the pdaxrom page.

Damm, hoped that would work as it did the trick for me.
P.S. you can remount / read-write if you need to change anything by
mount -o rw,remount /
I suggest as soon as your done that you
mount -o ro,remount /
to put it back read-only so you don\'t mistakenly kill your Z by deleting /sbin or something stupid like me.

Nobody use the Mass storage settings ?
With the Cacko Qt ROM, I use it at work to sync with KO/PI on my Winblows desktop. I run KO/PI sync from the Desktop to \"local file\". (I\'ve symlinked mycalendar.ics from my SD card to default location in internal memory)
The only trick was to install USB mass storage drivers for the Z. With PC link set to Storage, go to Device manager and the Z\'s connection (mine had the dreaded Splat symbol on it), go to properties, chose update drivers and then USB Mass storage. WAY faster for transering files, than samba. Down side only one card visible at a time.

thanks for the great rom!
What I still miss, is something similiar like the notes-applet and the clipboard from Opie.
I installed both, but this would freeze my C860 (after a while) when my wlan was inserted.
Is there a solution to this?

Hi, all of you.
decided to Nand Restore with my \'old\' Sash Qtopia Rom : was not able to get Mass storage working.
Stupefaction : I have the same error messages and the same read-write configuration on the old ROM : but it works !!!!
Conclusion : the thruth is elsewhere ( perhaps an updated driver somewhere ?)
Please, keep in mind that there is a real mass storage prob on this ROM
A lot of intempestive reboot / switch off, also !!
-
okay, I think I did post it elsewhere, but here is a better place I suppose - so sorry for double posting.
Could someone explain or find a solution for my iwconfig though listing eth0 would claim, that it hasn\'t any wireless extensions?
ifconfig is listing everything right and surfing with the Zaurus is no problem.
thanks a lot,
cheers Kathrin

Ah the man himself, nice work - REAL NICE.

Please help, I am getting frantic!!

ALL my problems have been solved.
I flashed the previous Cacko release, and that\'s it, no more flashing for me, time to play...
Maslovsky, you\'re doing some great work, compared to the ROM that my Z came with, this is PURE GOLD.
I\'m \'feelin the love\' for my 860 now, can\'t wait for ROM 1.21
Is Sashz finished with Qtopia ROMs now? Are you our only lifeline? I\'d love to help more but wouldn\'t like to make a regular habit of flashing my Z.
Thanks again

I am noticing some problems with Cacko QT ROM 1.20, I am finding that if I listen to music with the case closed, it stops after a while, when I open the case I get a white screen, and it beeps every second or so, I managed to get it back once, other times I have to take the battery out.
Also I am noticing that the time is not being kept properly, usually I wake up in the morning and find the machine has rebooted and the display is showing the set time/date screen. It seems to do this at indeterminable intervals.
Now I\'ve had this machine a week, I am no longer feeling the love... (oh, I miss my 5500)
Anyone got any ideas how to flash the original ROM back without the evils of NAND stuff?
I\'m getting desperate, I want to use my machine not constantly tinker with it!!!
HELP!!!

oh, Emperor - your love waxes and wanes with the tides of ROM changes it seems.
but seriously I am using 1.20 on my 750 and listen to music with the screen closed (and display off), and everything is fine , just fine.
Time is the same from day I set it up.
Are u sure you are already not tunkering with it since loading the new ROM ? I am surprised at your Zaurus\'s instability - since my 750 seems to be more stable with Cacko than my 5000D with tkcROM beta.

Mine does this too, using the sharp mp3 player on the same rom.
I rarely listen to mp3\'s using the zaurus so it\'s not a major gripe.
Perhaps other media players don\'t do this
Peter.

I had a similar problem, it happens when the screensaver activates. You need to locate qpe.conf (If I remember correctly) and disable the screensaver by setting the screensaver timeout to 0
That solved my woes.

Now that might do it! I have set Interval=0 will see how it goes..

Are you sure you haven\'t been overclocking your Z?!
-
no, no, no!
I don\'t overclock it, no!!
;-)
--Update--
Foxdie, I\'ve been thrashing the machine for the last two hours now, no problems, I hope it was just the screensaver interfering and making things crash.
-
It was definately the screensaver for me, it was crashing Qtopia and because Qtopia takes a while to restart it appears that the Zaurus is rebooting.
If I was to guess why this happens, it would probably be that switching from 640x480 to 320x240 (which is what the screensaver runs at) while either the LCD is off or the Sharp MP3 player is active causes it to segfault and as someone said earlier, it\'s run under the \"Qtopia\" process and takes the whole lot with it when it does.
I told sashz about this a while ago but he says he has no idea why it does this. I guess it\'s just a quirk we\'ll have to live with. In all sincerity, why do we need a screensaver on the Zaurus anyway? It\'s an LCD, it doesn\'t suffer nowhere near as bad from static images as a CRT monitor

I agree with Foxdie, but I do like the screensaver from this Japanese site http://www.skill-engineering.com/zaurus/ (http://www.skill-engineering.com/zaurus/)
Especially the fish module. I haven\'t experienced any crashing with it on my C750.
-
Foxdie, I think you may have cracked it, my Z has been working fine since I did it, by now I should have had at least 2 or 3 reboots.
Aaaah (sigh of relief), I totally agree the screensaver is a waste of binary really.
Video mode switching could explain the problem, it would make sense and fit the pattern of what I\'ve seen go tits up...
-
You can easily tell if it\'s the screensaver thats crashing it, just before the crash / reboot the screen goes white with garbled black text in the center, then about 60 - 90 seconds later you hear the qtopia startup sound (assuming you have it enabled).

I like it too. If space permits I may include it in the next Cacko ROM version.

Ha ha ha!!
I know, I know. I really should have played with it for a day or two before exploring new ROMs, but I couldn\'t wait, so I am discovering things/find issues as I go along and not knowing where the fault lies, I am learning that my machine is stable too, I\'m just becoming aware of quirks... it\'s all running fine at the mo.

In possesion of a 4gb micrdrive i tend to listen to music a fair bit on my c760.. i have noticed a few things..
1: I tend to set the cpu speed down to \"Default (PXA250)\" to try and save power.. I notice the touchscreen doesnt respond to input very well at this setting.. Using the volume slider or menus becomes very dificult.. Open ImagePAd and try to draw a streight line accross the shortest axis of the screen! (down in landscape mode or accross in portrait mode).
2: Every so often qpe dies and restarts.. (Mentioned ealrier in this thread i think).
It would be nice to have a player that would read the data off the drive in large (maybe a song) blocks at a time. As it is the drive spins prety much continuosly and so drains the battery quickly.
If nobody can sugest a player that will do this i think i will write one myself whereby a buffer of several meg is filled and then drained till say 20% or so and then filled again.. Hopefully the drive might last a little longer and my battery life increase somewaht too.
[EDIT].. Also that will overide the auto suspend after X minutes.. very annoying whilst in the middle of favorite album!
-
The new ROM will have new screen saver, which does not crash Qtopia and supports disabling of suspend for used-defined applications.
It will also have Media Player from SL6000

I have some problem with Calendar under last cacko rom. i can\'t change openning option. I have only Today view at openning.. i prefer text week view or month view. So i delete Datebook.conf... it\'s the same.. there is another solution to registred openning view..
In the new cacko 1.30 ??
It work\'s with \"fast load option\" because program isn\'t closed, but without this option, openning view doesn\'t change

My MMC card problem BTW I believe was a hardware problem, I got the supplier to send me another one, same problem, now I have bought a different card from a different supplier and it seems ok, but I do get cards (very occasionally) remounted read-only after suspends or usb drive mounting.

There is a possibility to make a \"Light Cacko Rom\" : only hardware without some applications.
Now, i use Ko/pi (http://www.pi-sync.net/html/ko_pi.html), TKCplayer, Zeditor...
So without Calendar, Kino (to use new Mplayer, if required), Mpegplayer, text editor... you can make a 22 or 24Mo Rom...
You can choose your personal software like KO/pi, Zeditor, MP3player from Z6000, or another, without double
