I had a problem with my speaker not making sounds last week when this forum was down.
There is a long winded thread over at tyrannozaurus.

Meanie suggested I issue this command in the console.
cat /dev/sndstat
That gave me "no such file or directory"
So later, I un-installed 2 newly installed programs, then went to a previous backup, using the restore function in Cacko.
The speaker started working again.
Issuing the command "cat /dev/sndstat" now gave me this
CORGI I2S sound driver:
sound.format = 0x10 (signed 16 bit little)
sound.speed = 44100Hz
sound.stereo = 0x1 (stereo)But I noticed, sometimes when using the "Home" button to tab through my Qtopia tabs, the "Home" button seemed to be acting like a volume control, and would "lower" the volume.
That was about 5 days ago.
Tonight, when I resumed my Z, all the sound was gone again.
Yes, I have tried the headphones, and an external amplifier with the proper jack, and both methods always worked.
There must be a loose or weak connection to my internal speaker, because I tried pressing the "Home" button, which is almost directly above the speaker. Nothing happened.
I set the unit on my desk and pressed the area near the button, where there is an empty space on the keyboard.
I pressed it down just enough to "flex" it a little. The sound came back to my speaker!
So, earlier, when pressing the "Home" button, and making the volume vary, I was "flexing" the top of the keyboard and "making", or "breaking" the speaker's electrical connection.
Since I stay home most of the Winter, and don't take my Z with me on motorcycle rides in the Summer, my Z hasn't seen much abuse. It is usually on my computer desk or dresser in my bedroom.
So there shouldn't be a reason for the bad electrical connection to the internal speaker due to abuse, or being knocked around. It seems that this is the problem though. If it happens again, I'll just "flex" the area above the speaker and see what happens, then I'll know if it is a mechanical problem.

cacko was hel buggy for me. I went back to sharprom. Still waiting for a more stable 3200 version. Maslovski is a busy dude. hope to see an update.

I'll be getting a new C3200 around the end of January.
I buy my stuff from StreamlineCPUs and there is an $80.00 difference between the 3100 and the 3200 now.
The 3100 is more expensive, and is also out of stock.
That $80.00 difference will buy me a wifi card.
I plan on trying pdaXrom on my 2nd Zaurus.

very sorry to hear of your sound problems. I think all the clamshell models have had a weakness in that area.
if might be worth opening up your Z to see if the connector itself has a dry joint that's popped. if you have a steady hand it might be re-solderable... I guess it depends on the balance of risk between "kill or cure"!

I'm not sure if I want to open my Z. I don't have a very steady hand.
This little "problem" only seems to occur after the Z has been suspended.
I'll keep an eye on it and see if it's actually a hardware prob, or software.
This morning, my "stylus clicks" and "directory navigation" sounds got very strange sounding for a short while, then went back to their "normal" sounds.

I think I may have found my problem with the speaker on my C3100 here.
This thread describes my problem with the C3100 speaker.
I'm not ready to do the "surgery", but this looks like a good description of my sound issues on my C3100.
I also have some close-up pictires of the C3100, disassembled, but I cannot attach them here at the moment.

the speaker sits snuggly into a circular slot in the bottom of the case. it is not connected by any wires to the motherboard. Most likely, the connections are tarnished in some way. I suggest you open the z up, wipe with alcohol pads but make sure you dont touch anything else. rub the ends till it showes cleanliness. that is what i can gather. I opened my c 3200 once just to change the internal hardisk.
