Future of Iraq: The spoils of war
How the West will make a killing on Iraqi oil riches
By Danny Fortson, Andrew Murray-Watson and Tim Webb
Published: 07 January 2007

Iraq's massive oil reserves, the third-largest in the world, are about to be thrown open for large-scale exploitation by Western oil companies under a controversial law which is expected to come before the Iraqi parliament within days.

The US government has been involved in drawing up the law, a draft of which has been seen by The Independent on Sunday. It would give big oil companies such as BP, Shell and Exxon 30-year contracts to extract Iraqi crude and allow the first large-scale operation of foreign oil interests in the country since the industry was nationalised in 1972.

It still wouldn't effect the US much since it's crude oil and we're limited on the number of refineries we have.  However that does mean we could make more CD's and DVD's...

This is just a couple of pages from a google search.

[a href=\"http://www.slate.com/id/2102031/]http://www.slate.com/id/2102031/[/url]

http://www.washtimes.com/op-ed/20050901-090238-2490r.htm (http://www.washtimes.com/op-ed/20050901-090238-2490r.htm)

That's why there was a big scare of price hikes when that hurricane was hitting 3 refineries off Texas last year.  That would have crippled production.

Polycarbonate plastic is made from crude oil.  So every time you throw away a CD or DVD that's a little bit of crude oil.

That's what I was referring to.

I live about 5 miles from a refinery, the oil they use is produced about 400 miles from me.  I still pay more for gas than most of the lower 48 states.  Splain that one...

I call it "We got you by the short ones, what are you going to do."  It's not like I can survive without it.  It got down to -45F last night.  We use fuel oil to heat the house.  We also only have about 8-10 inches of snow on the ground, so I'm just waiting for shit to freeze....

Hey, you're even further north than, me.
Sorry to hear about the weather. I found you (your town) on google maps. Do you guys have a song about the corner of Hurst and Nelson like we have about Portage and Main?
I guess my comment was an attempt at humor, but we sell our tree's to the US and then buy 2x4's from the US for more money, so I can kinda relate. We're kinda dumb, I guess.

Quite off topic, but at least you're selling and buying something. Yesterday I heard about some german woman who has made a million Euros by selling houses and land on "second life".
Who the f... want to spend money on a house or land that doesn't even exist ???

Chero.

Hey Barry I saw the pics on your site.  The aurora's look beautiful however -45F is a bit extreme  .... How did you end up there?

I live about 60 miles from Richmond, CA (from San Jose).  That's were Chevron refines theirs.  I think we pay more than you.    It could be all supply and demand.  Glad we don't live in Hawaii avg is 3.02

Air Force brat.  I was also stationed here in the Air Guard for 9 years.  I like it up here, I would much prefer being cold than hot.  That and there aren't as many crowds up here.

here here!

I live in Connecticut and the crowds are starting to get unbearable.  The housing boom raped my town and turned it into a suburb

Well, it's the least they can do after all we've done for them....

Assuming "we" means the USA and the "coalition of the willing", let's see what "we" have done for "them":

- destroyed Iraq's infrastructure
- introduced terrorists into the country
- installed a puppet government
- settled a personal grudge by executing Saddam

If the Western oil companies are allowed to exploit Iraq's oil wealth then it won't be many years before an Iraqi Revolution along the lines of the Iranian Revolution.
