EDIT:  It has a 3.5 inch touchscreen and is running Mac OS X!
It was said on www.macrumours.com that it has 160 dpi - but that would mean only 320x480 pixels screen

And, does anybody know if it is really running MacOS X or is it just looking like the Aqua/Cocoa interface style? It wasn't said anything about writing your own software...

And, if I look at the minimum system requirements for MacOS X 10.4, I have doubts:
Quote
Mac OS X Version 10.4 requires a Macintosh with:
At least 256MB of physical RAM
At least 3.0 GB of available space on your hard drive
And not mentioned, it needs a powerful processor - on a very small battery.

Here are the tech specs from Apple:

Screen size: 3.5 inches
Screen resolution: 320 by 480 at 160 ppi
Input method: Multi-touch
Operating system: OS X
Storage: 4GB or 8GB
GSM Quad-band: (MHz: 850, 900, 1800, 1900)
Wireless data Wi-Fi: (802.11b/g) + EDGE + Bluetooth 2.0
Camera: 2.0 megapixels
Battery: Up to 5 hours Talk / Video / Browsing
Up to 16 hours Audio playback

Dimensions 4.5 x 2.4 x 0.46 inches / 115 x 61 x 11.6mm
Weight 4.8 ounces / 135 grams

The screen resolution is lower then I expected.  I was hoping 640x480 at least.

I wonder if the WiFi will work at g speeds.  Nice to see bluetooth too.  Hopefully, Cingular won't lock it down.

No mention of the processor(s) or the amount of RAM.  I think I'll stick with my Zs.

Apple is adament that the iPhone is running OS X.  My guess is that Aqua and parts of Core subsystems (Graphics, etc...) were not ported to keep the OS X footprint down so, Aqua has been replaced with something a bit more light weight on this unit.  I am also guessing that they are using ARM processors of some sort.  Possibly multiple ones since the communications features aren't being disrupted when you are doing other things at the same time.  I would also hazzard a guess that that unit has some sort 2D/3D acceleration to be able to run Movies, Google Maps and the eye candy so smoothly.

All I can say is, THAT is the way you are suppposed to seamlessly integrate different functions in one device.  Very nice job indeed!!!

At least there is one company that knows that we are already in the 21st century!!!

I won't be getting iPhone v1.0 (screen seems low-res), but certainly I'll be there when iPhone v2.0 arrives !!

With it having OS X under the hood I guess it will be easier to get open source software on to it? And I don't mean replacing the OS with linux, but building on the OS X itself.

I'm not a programmer but I noted he mentioned cocoa too, though I don't really know what that is of course! What I am saying is please don't someone say wouldn't it be great to get linux on it... Apple have already got unix on it, what would be great is smart folks like those coding for the Z creating/compiling amazingly useful software on top!

Just a thought.

Looking forward to June then.

EDIT
Bugger, just read this. That's no to open source then.

yeah, the price really isn't awful considering.  I realized shortly after my post how much I payed for my 3200 on preorder (neigh 800 USD IIRC).  Funny how your perception of "expensive" changes when you buy imported japanese tech goodies

I know what you mean. My C3000 was $705 from PriveJapan years ago.
I'm in the market for a new phone and was looking hard at the BlackJack.....

All I freaking want is a linux smart phone!! But I can't seem to find one.

GreenPhone is said to be unstable for dialy use. Even Trolltech makes the point that it's a dev tool, not a daily use phone.

So RIM, Nokia and Apple are my only 'non MS' options out there and _none_ run linux.

sigh.

I dunno... that sounds like loose ends near the end of a project ..and the frustration that goes with it just as easily as it could be taken to mean an endless, hopeless (phoneless) mire.

I wasn't planning to buy one far a little while anyway

Wow!  That was a poorly researched article even by Slashdot standards.  The author shows no proof for that conclusion since no one outside of a small set of Apple and Cingular employees have even touched the thing.

He makes it sound like it would be impossible to recompile the BSD components on ARM.     We better not tell the OpenBSD and NetBSD people on OESF about this or their Zauruses might stop working.

I'm guessing that until June we won't find out any more goodies about this puppy.

Honestly I'm not sure about cingular or ATT.
we have alascom gci and mta.  I do everything with gci--decent plans and easier to manage with one call.  Another reason I won't be getting an i-phone, maybe, though.
