I found it in the forum section. Here is the key comments
How I experienced from Japan, SHARP does not seem to be interested in a further production of the Zaurus PDAs in the current form any more. Over a direct successor me at present also nothing is well-known.
Take it easy, I will have the Zaurus further in the offer, as well as accessories and support for it will carry out.

Hi all,
yes, we have to confirm that Sharp pulled the plug out
of the Zaurus line.
No successor model is planned, and the end of production
will be early February.
For sure we'll continue with support, service and accessories
for the Zauri. Also there're interesting other products around,
so the fun with mobile Linux products is definitely not over.

Wow, what a sad news.
It's interesting that while all manufacturers are getting into this umpc-micropc area, sharp, with a great product and experience is quitting.
Even there are appearing many alternatives as a replacement, my heart will always be for the lovely zaurus.

Finally.

I confirm this info. But hey, I better speak English like translation those
The Pulster Zaurus Shop (http://www.pulster.de/engl) will supply Zaurus units (C-1000/32000 and SL-5500/6000 series), a lot of accessories and help.

and for how much time you (Pulster, Trisoft, other suppliers) will be able to supply Zaurus units and repair service?
How long will the stocks last?
Thanks,
Daniel

Personally, end of product line =/= end of my interest.
For now I still find my Z hardly replaceable by other handheld products in terms of form factor and flexibility. There are still many funny and useful stuff that can be ported to Z, and they can run pretty well.
-
IMO, it's a sad day.
I will need to grieve for a while.
-
It seems strange that Sharp is the innovator of this mini laptop/dictionary and came out with it quite some time ago, that they now drop it, while a lot of other people are now trying to copy it, or already have a close replacement for it.
Sharp seems to have their hands in many technologies, they are now producing the blue laser for blu-ray and hd-dvd units.

I feel the same way Antikx, you have really put a whole lot of effort into your website and everyone here appreciates it.
I'm not giving up my Z, as a matter of a fact, I have a new C3200 on order.
EDIT: You pulled many of us through the downtime when OESF forums were offline during last Xmas time period.
-
I will also not give up on my C3100 and am wondering what will happen now as both pdaxrom and Oz are unfinished. Instead of replacing my laptop as I planned I should maybe think about a C3200 as a backup to my C3100. A sad day indeed.
-
I hope the end of the Zaurus era means the dawning of another. Sharp has there fingers in a lot of pies (pdas, phones, dvd, dictionaries, lcd, etc, etc.). Sharp may possibly have a UMPC or similar type device up their sleeve that will carry a different brand name.
I can't see them abandoning this area of the market. I wouldn't be surprised to see a remodeled W-Zero3 type device. Be nice if it ran linux (Qt phone), but would likely be a Windows device.
-
It's a world-wide day of mourning (http://www.tyrannozaurus.com/).
-
I know I will continue working on pdaXrom... I'm actually going to prolly buy a 3200 soon... hopefully new before everyone sells out... peferably from pricejapan...
But this does suck... because... as time passes... kernels, applications, etc get more memory, resource, processor intensive... and knowing that the Zaurus aren't going to be able to move with the changes... really does suck... but hey... I'm still here for the long run...

Well, I can't say I am all that surprised by this annoucement. I just thought that Sharp would release one more 3x00 model before migrating over to the Papyrus line. That turned out to be wishful thinking on my part.
Also, the Zaurus will continue to be available for a while after the stop production date; it just means that Sharp won't be building anymore. Trust me I have been through this experience before first with the Sharp PC series and then Psion (see my sig below).
I've said this elsewhere on these forums and I'll repeat it again.
"Even the day that Sharp completely pulls the plug on the Zaurus line it will not die unless this community and others like it will let it die.
The Zaurus is one of those rare products that has dedicated communities behind it that strive to push it past the pigeon-holed niche that Sharp has decided to stuff it into. I consider myself honoured to be a part such a great and helpful community like this one."
Well that day has finally come; if we stick together we can move past this, continue to grow the Zaurus experience and make it a legendary product with an active supportive hobbiest community like the Tandy Model 100, the Commodore 64, Atari 2600, and Sega DreamCast communities.
We have alot going for us. The various 2.6 kernel distros (sorry ROMs) are coming along nicely thanks to the OZ, pdaXROM, and Angstrom teams. The 2.4 kernel distros (sorry ROMs) are either nicely polished (Cacko) or very close to it (Pdaxii13) thanks to Maslovsky, Meanie and the pdaXrom team. So keep the faith.

Ya I don't intend on shutting down the site anytime soon. Like I've mentioned before the [a href=\"http://www.club100.org/]Tandy Model 10X community[/url] (AFAIK) is still alive and well despite it being out of production for decades.
If a Linux based PDA comes out that surpasses the Zaurus I will start saving my pennies but will probably always have a Zaurus or two kicking around my house.

The time is right for a palmtop running a full desktop Linux distro. Why should the OQO & Flipstart have all the fun. If Sharp won't step up to the plate, I believe someone else will before too long.

I saw the sony UX390N UMPC at CES and I was very impressed. It was running vista and confirmed with sony that it can dual boot with linux. This would suit my portable needs but a 2599 price tag is just way too much. Hopefully some decent and cheap UMPC's come out to satisfy my mobile technology interest.

Sharp always preffered to be technology creator rather then device creator. They released c700 to show their new CG Silicon screens to the world.

OpenZaurus developers are working on 3.5.5 release for all existing models (except SL-A300 as usual). After release most of us will probably concentrate on fixing bugs, adding software and will move to Ångström distribution as this is future of embedded distros.
-
I feel very sad. I'm a relative late-comer to the Zaurus - about 18 months now but have come to love it; when I bought an 860 the excitement was immense as each discovery took place of new things it was capable of!
I wonder why Sharp have finished the line, when it's said to be have been a very popular product in Japan? Perhaps the W-Zero line has been so much more successful? Maybe we can hope that a 3rd party will buy the design and product like Hitachi did with the Flora and keep selling it.
I anticipate a price rise as people sitting on the fence decide to jump onboard (to nicely mix metaphors), just as happened when the 6000 was cancelled.
One thing for sure, I will be taking greater care of my baby, now that I know it's going to be irreplaceable. I am wondering whether to buy a C1000 as a backup and/or experimental machine.

Easy to answer: as long as there are customers, I will stock Zaurus.
Coming from the world of PSION PDAs, the Psion Series 3 was out of production 1996. Today, ten years later I am still selling some of this models. Quality products last long time.

You won't regret getting a 1000. Having a Sandbox and Production machines means having less worries about messing things up. As a bonus lots of the parts are interchangeable for that fateful day.

That is pretty much my only concern about the production stop right now.
If Sharp continues to use the pack in other devices then we should be okay since the pack will continue to be manufactured. If they don't then the pack will be the Achilles Heel of the Zaurus since lithium batteries also have a finite shelf life. Does the W-Zero-3 use an EA-BL11? I can't remember.
Of course, if the third party manufactuers in China got their acts together and actually made a replacement Zaurus battery that works out of the box (carving plastic on a brand new battery with an Exacto knife! ) this could become a non-issue as well.

IMHO, a zaurus should last as long as any other well-cared-for computer or piece of electronic equipment.
Most zaurus wounds are user-inflicted.
I would also think that support should last for one year after the very last new zaurus is sold, and new parts made available.
And with all the zaurus users, used units and parts should be available for some time to come.
-
Understand and basically agree with your analysis, hrw....
But I still feel a bit sad to see the Z's not continue...
Of course, went through the same thing with the Newt too and got over it....even went to the protest rally at Apple headquarters over it...didn't do any good but we felt better....

One the one hand I hate the idea of the end of the zaurus line. However, I can see your point of view and slightly agree that perhaps we're better off that Sharp no longer sell a device which is so poorly supported - it opens up the market to a newcomer who won't have to compete with Sharp... for example, Nokia might now consider a clamshell variation of the N800, and the PocketPenguin suddenly has no competitor.
This could also focus attention on getting the HTC universal linux port up to scratch.
-
Hi all,
I would also think that support should last for one year after the very last new zaurus is sold, and new parts made available.
support and spare parts will be available for a very long period.
Sharp is well known for spare part support lasting 5+ years after
the last unit left the factory. Today we have still access to parts
for 10 year old devices, so we don't worry about it.
Also accessories and batteries (3rd party) will still be available.
Don't forget about the real big numbers of Zauri in Japan, so
there's a noticeable demand for batteries and options for the
next years.

I would assume that they will be developed for while to come, as there will still be Z users.
-
I pretty much agree with hrw's assessment. I like my z's, and don't plan to get rid of them. But if i buy another handheld gizmo this year it will probably be a neo--it migh have been a new nokia. It would not have been a Zaurus. Ireally never expected to buy a Z after my 3100. Dablitz's project sounds interesting, the neo cold be the start of somehthing really cool, and nokia seems to be giving the linux handheld a serious effort.
Sharp wasn't taking the technology in any of the interesting directions it might have gone--and as hrw points out, we could all have guessed that the Z wasn't going to evolve simply based on the fact that the (sharp) software never did.
I really enjoy these forums (and plan to continue the use of my Z for some time yet) and I expect we will find a few devices that either are running linux, or will run linux nicely, and we will move on to those with a few nostalgic comments about the Z and maybe more commens along the line of "how did we ever live with out feature X?"

All of this is something that I feared, I just returned to work this week and my company stopped development for the Z last month. Just makes you wonder where linux will go to in a PDA form factor? Still trying to sell my Z (C3100), but seems like a bad time of year to buy. Also, with Sharp closing out the Z line, it looks like the age of the PDA is coming to a close, especially with all of the converged devices out there like the treo and the iphone.
-
As many of the oesf people would know by now (although I could not read the article above..), sharp's termination of zaurus is related to commercial success of new line of a wm smartphone named W-ZERO3, which hasn't long been popular in Japan because of oligopoly by communication careers. (and, one more thing, popularity of more simplistic electronic dictionary lines.)
This transition has been done as favor of a phs com module W-SIM, for which architectures are open, and now small group might be able to produce their linux mobile phones.
The problems I concern are...
Some W-SIM phones do not(and will not) have communication devices that can be used in western countries, eg Wifi, GSM. So selling and hacking these models are not expected in countries other than japan, china, taiwan, thai, and some african countries, in which the phs standard adopted.
Second, above all, zaurus's one and only sense of use and custmizability are no more garanteed.
Actually, I purchased W-ZERO3[es], may be the top seller in the W-SIM line, and have sold it and returned to SL-C760 in 2 months...
I hope anyone to produce linux-based clamshell pdas or W-ZERO3[es]'s linux rom soon...
-
I know this wasn't built for me but why does the W-ZERO3[es] need two keyboards...give me a bigger screen.
cycle_55
-
Aye ... it's kinda sad ... but think of it this way ... AFAI am concerned, SHARP could have ceased production and I would not feel much of a diff, as they just release the products and don't really produce any ROM updates or anything as such.
OESF forums and the community has supported all of us way better than SHARP has done.
I guess the one thing is that now there is no new Zaurii coming out for sure ...
-
I remain hopeful for the *current* state of Z development. There are still lots of things we can do (distros and packages) to perfect and get the most out of this extraordinary gadget.
I will stay with Z for quite some while, perhaps until Neo1973 is out and creates another buzz. iPhone looks gorgeous, but its openness remains doubtful.

Hi HoloVector,
Have you been able to source third party batteries that work out of the box without scraping the plastic around the terminals in order to get them to work with a Zaurus?
sure. The batteries from Rowa (the ones we're selling for
the SL-5500 and the SL-C series) will work right out of
the blisterpack (no box ). No modding or cutting is
required (this would be poor quality from the maker).
They aren't actually on the website, but in our shop. We have
them for a year now and received no complaints.

-
Hi all,
@jochen-02
Why don't you sell them online?
sorry for the confusion. Internally we simply isolate
the website (the tons of html-pages with infos,
downloads etc.) and the shop (the dynamic system
where people can buy stuff).
So i just meant that you won't see the batteries if
you browse through trisoft.de, but if you click at
the "online shop" button, they're listed as "R-EA-BL06"
and "R-EA-BL11".
@HoloVector
Thanks Marc. Once again you have the problem solved. Are these these packs 1700mAh (like the EA-BL08) or 1800mAh (like the EA-BL11)?
Specification for the Rowa EA-BL06 is 1050 mAh.
So it's +100mAh compared to the original EA-BL06.
The Rowa EA-BL11 is 1800 mAh. Identical specs to
the EA-BL11.

Bad news for the Zaurus community
-
I hope this doesn't mean that Softmaker will abandon their support for products on the Z... it kills any hopes that TomTom might be persuaded to do an official linux port. Also diminishes chances of an updated opera browser too. Ironically, it means the Sony MyLo is one of the only linux true-handhelds with a keyboard now.

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=151162\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
I think it is good news. It means that people will start thinking about how they can adapt their 'zaurus' software to other devices. It will make their software more generic and easier to maintain.
-
shocking that koen would take an opposing view
-
In a way (as far as OZ and pdaX are concerned) koen is right. Just think of how many issues have been generated by the differences between the Cxx0 and the Cxk series, and between the "flash-only" models and those with microdrive.
I'm just beginning to think of making my Z as the dedicated pocketable roguelike/dungeon crawling gaming device. One of the greatest things about these games is they can be ported easily to many platforms (such as pdaX) with low hardware requirement.
-

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=151164\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
I think this is good news for non-zaurus handheld linux fans - you're right, people will make their code more portable... but why should non-zaurus fans make the software they already have portable to the zaurus?
Why should any budding new embedded or handheld linux guru get a zaurus and join the community? No, apart from a last surge of interest, the zaurus will very slowly die, we'll all hang on as long as possible and hope something will come along to replace it, and we'll all have to work even harder to get new software written (or dig into our pockets to offer a bounty).
For proof, take a look at the discontinued 6000, despite being a very fine machine, there's not been massive innovation there, although the OZ people did us a big favour by adopting it. Admittedly, there aren't too many 6000s active.
-
I don't understand what all this fuss is about. The Zaurus is just another very nice device but with any device, there will be a time it will become obsolete and replaced with better technology. However, this has not come yet. Sharp just announced that they will stop producing them which is not very surprising since the Zaurus is just a very powerful multimedia dictionary on their prodcuct line. The Z is very well build and will last me a few more years before it will be shelved and replaced with something better that hopefully will be available a few years down the track. As for software, well, just use pdaXrom and compile your own. Shapr/Cacko has been there for years without significant changes in software and you can always continue to use those. The only problem I can see is for those stuck with using OZ...
Back to using Windows for me
-
Bah. A low blow from down under. (pun intended) I agree with Meanie. Unless you somehow derive your self-worth from the toys you carry, drive it until the wheels fall off. I carried my HP 200LX for a long time and could probably still make do with it. If there is a market, there will be another. I was thinking of starting a post in the OT section entitled:
Portable Belgian Waffle Maker spells doom for the Z
That is about the level of silliness we have reached. The thing with all-in-one devices is that they tend to do a lot of things, few to none of them well. If you don't believe that, tell me how you like using your blackberry as a cell phone. I don't. Groups like this and smart folks like Meanie and others keep these devices alive long past their EOL and have the side benefit of helping to keep the resale price up well beyond the viability of the product. And with that, let me say - Bears Win, Bears Win, Bears Win!

I agree, but why does it have to be a "Belgian Waffle Maker" ?
-
i think that people are just lookning to jump ship and ale wieghing thier options
perhaps if this went from a zaurus fourm to a "linux portables" fourm it would be more acurate as it seems some of the questions this board has been getting are more and mare diverse
the one thing i dont like about the handheld mailing list was that it was a mailing list, for this type of discussion a fourm feels alot more natural. perhaps we should start a new sister site dedicaed to portables with a linux slant. we could pick up most of the 1 question guys out of the handhelds fourm then and perhaps get them more involved with the community
even though my Z is dead i dont mind doing what amounts to tech support for the people on this fourm at all.
-
Maybe people are looking to jump ship. I dunno, though most of us enjoyed looking at the new Z's as they came out..and buying a new one occasionally. I think I might be typical in saying I'm hanging on to my Z--but I'm also looking for the next thing, just like I would have been had there been a zaurus 4000 coming out, just as I had been when I had a 5600...then a 6000. My z's have years of use ahed- but that doesn't preclude an interest in better linux handhelds

Well, what other type of Waffle Maker would you use??

Bel-gium?
Some would have you believe that the Bel in Belgium stems from the ancient Bel or Ba'al
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baal)
As for the Z, I think there's plenty of life in it yet. We're still looking forward to full hardware support (SRAM for one) in the 2.6 kernel, improvements in pdaXrom and OZ, Angstrom, zodttd's full speed Neo-Geo/Capcom arcade emulator, a new GPE, QT4, maybe a full-speed playstation emulator and who knows maybe someone will even one day successfully hack a 2700G AND 128MB RAM onto their cxxxx?!?
2007 could actually be a great year for Z OS's and software IMO!

We do use a belgian waffle maker every now and again ...
Maybe Belgium refers to Bel or Ba'al ....
But the Zaurus will be out of production, that seems to be a fact.
I'll still be using mine for a few years I guess. I ain't seen nothing else I like that much, yet...
Having fun,
Chero.
-
yes it is a sad day i got mine in august of last year i am glad i got it before they went away you never no sharp may planing something new for a zaurus succesor
-
in the gallic wars Caesar makes reference to a group the Belgae living in that region. The only way bel would be ann issue in what was then celtic gaul would have been through the phoenecian traders of effect of the punic wars--begium might be a bit out of the way for that (though migration might help accout for it)imho.

Oh and come to think of it, SHARP isn't exactly well known for maintaining product lines. With its pull out of earlier pda products in US and other countries, I'm not surprised.
Anyhow, I think our Zs are still going to be one heck of a pda many years to come ... as long as they don't break. I mean, which pda can claim to be a mini convertible tabletpc running linux? 8)

actually the 2700G project and the extra RAM were "done" so to speak. the only thing holding it back is that its not easy to get the 2700G chip and it requires some heavy soldering (over 300 BGA pins). if it was done it would have to be done in batches and require that your Z was sent off to someone to do it for you

Does the RAM upgrade just have nothing holding it back (including availability of parts), or has somebody done it?

"Even the day that Sharp completely pulls the plug on the Zaurus line it will not die unless this community and others like it will let it die.
I still use my Newton, and that had the rug pulled out from under it in 1998. It's still going with a pretty good-sized user base.

basically the ram upgrade and the 2700g upgrade are best if rolled into one, the 2700 held it back but the ram should be doable, would require a reflash of the ram as you have to change the ram initilisation numbers

So, which camp seems the most promising to breathe new life into our now obsolete Z's (pdaXrom, Angstrom, QuantumSTEP)? I like the general direction of pdaXrom and the 2.6 kernel work, I like the look of Angstrom though I must admit I'm not sure if it's going to be more than just a gui look and feel change, and QuantumSTEP seems to have a long ways to go to really have an environment you wouldn't mind using on a daily basis.
Because the Z is so well built and so configurable, it will definitely be around for a while. I just wish the last model Sharp released would have had integrated wifi and BT. Speaking of which, has anyone been successful at shortening a CF wifi card so that it does not protrude beyond the case when inserted? Now that my hopes of integrated wifi have been dashed, the second best option may be to replace my C1000 with a C3200 and leave a modified wifi card in the CF slot permanently. I currently have to swap my 4gb CF microdrive with the wifi card.
Also, I don’t remember seeing this anywhere, but is there an SD BT solution that is either available or on the horizon that can be adopted for the Z?
There are quite a few new and interesting platforms coming out (Sony Vaio UX, OQO Model 02, Kohjinsha SH1, & HTC Athena) that have some outstanding features but at a very high premium. It is hard to match the Z clamshell abilities and keep the price within reason.
-
You can get a 4gb sd card (1gb Transcend 150x for eg) and you can leave you cf slot for wifi permanently .... which is basically what I am doing.

Yes, but the heart of the matter is that I can't stand typing on my Z with a friggen card poking an inch out the side! It's uncomfortable, reduces portability, and is quite likely to be damaged leaving it like that.
I'm trying to get my Socket BT card working for networking because it mounts flush. That would make me happy, slow speeds be damned.
Unfortunately, BT software is a huge steaming pile, and getting the whole mess working has been less than an entirely pleasing process so far.
-
kahm,
I've this before from others on the forum, but never understood what does having a card stick out on the side of your Z have to do with typing on it???
Isn't the keyboard on the top surface and the card to the side of the keyboard? What is the interference that I assume you're referring to come from???
Not trying to say that it doesn't bug you, just trying to understand what the problem is about....

I find typing on the Z when it's on the table ludicrous. If I've got room to set the Z down on a flat surface, then I usually have something more capable to use in it's place. 99.9% of the time I spend with my Zaurus is thumb typing - one hand on either side of the Z. You can see how the ergonomics fail to work in that circumstance. I carry mine in my jacket and use it on the bus, when I'm in a waiting room, etc. It's no good to me if I have to sit it down to use it. Plus, holding it with both hands is more stable and secure, and easier to type on then trying to hold it in one and and peck with the other.
Like I said - it's uncomfortable, plus you're forced to remove the card if you're sticking it back in your pocket, etc.* Part of the reason I like the clamshell form factor so much is that it's so sturdy and self contained. You don't have to worry so much about cases or screen protectors - just slam it back closed and stick it in your pocket.
(* Some people might feel otherwise, but the wi-fi cards are expensive, delicate, and way too easy to damage by leaving them poking out the side like that.)

That's been around for a while. Only 203mhz, QVGA screen. To its credit does have USB Host. Unfortunately, other than the built in Wi-fi, it's impossible to consider this as anything but a pale imitation of the Z.

it's the Socket card, the early revisions are actually Nokia devices (Nokia sold that division to Socket/Symbol), and are unstable; also you can't reflash them. The later G & H devices are probably a lot more reliable.
The one I use now is a PANBT010M:
[img]http://www.ccandc.com.tw/product/b-cf.JPG\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /]
it cost about a tenner off ebay, it does stick out a bit, but it's not too bad, and PAN networking seems quite reliable - as reliable as from my linux laptop to my firewall.
I've thought about opening the case to see if I can make it smaller, but it's not a massive hassle for me.

On top of that I don't think it's actually been released yet.
It was supposed to be quite cheap too, so it might have made an economical choice for someone that wanted the features that the Magpie had but didn't want to by a 5xxx. *shrug*

Is it worth taking a snapshot of the various sharp websites which show the zaurus, such as the www.ezaurus.com? There's all sorts of useful information and details on them which no doubt will disappear when the Z drops out of production.
Wasn't there, a long time ago (before my time) , a US & UK developer & support forum which Sharp abruptly turned off?
Snapshotting this forum has proved to me that you can become dependent on websites which aren't always as dependable as you'd like!

I've managed a PAN network using the socket card and a 1.1 dongle on linux and windows (Microsoft Stack). I can also do Obex on windows with the 2.0BT built into the Libretto.
I'm going to try the dongle's software under windows next, as Microsoft's stack doesn't let you bridge a PAN network to the internet. (Why???)

That would be handy but, most of the info is in Japanese though.
I found out yesterday that the product sites for the [a href=\"http://www.ezaurus.com/lineup/slc860/index.html]C860[/url] and C3000 (http://www.ezaurus.com/lineup/slc3000/) are still on the ezaurus site. I couldn't find the C3100 or C7xx site though.
EDIT: Found the C3100 (http://www.ezaurus.com/lineup/sl/slc3100/index.html) one.

Probably a good idea. I've started downloading packages for the Z, in case some of them start disappearing. I was hoping to track down some of the obscure sites that have unusual packages that I've had to hunt for in the past. I noticed that some of the sites I've visited hadn't been updated for a while and with the Z discontinued, I don't know how long those sites will be around. Now if I could only remember where I found them!

hehe ... it's funny how we can get influenced by others ... I've been using the keyboard, thumbing style while surfing the web, writing on forums etc, and have been pretty ok with it ... but then noticed what you mean, in that the wifi card does sticks out a bit. Mine juts just a half inch so it's pretty alright.
Someone on another thread was asking if the screen can be rotated 180 landscape in tablet mode so that the wifi juts out on the right (it's on the left in tablet mode by default). Still trying to find the script handler for rotation.

I still use my Newton because of the persistence of the data. It really is good for entering random information that I need to remember, and it's easy to search and find what I want, years later. When the battery dies, no problem, nothing gets lost, just plug it in months later, the information is still stored.
Sure, it's a bit heavy, it's grayscale, it's a bit slow. But it is still useful.
-
pdahero, just out of curiousity, what do you use your Newt for nowadays??
Mostly as a mobile journal, actually. The Newton makes a wonderful mobile writing platform, especially with its size and full-sized stylus (pen?) Also with its slightly textured screen (compared to the Original Message Pad) and my custom stylus pen from Cross, it's just about perfect.
It even hooks up to my Personal Stylewriter so I can print directly if need be.

and just for those of you thinking of getting an OQO to replace your Z, my OQO is almost dead. Piece of $^&*. Lousy quality, not worth is at all considering that it cost 4 times as much as the Zaurus and I had my Zaurus much longer than the OQO and use my Zaurus much more. Stupid OQO.
-
Sorry to hear that Meanie. After the hype and long wait, that is disappointing. I read the fellows posts from the point when he had the matchbox PC. Got a bad feel from the way it progressed. I was shocked that it made it to market and more shocked by the price. Some of the vaporware devices being posted here as potential successors to the Z give me a similarly bad feeling.

yeah warranty is a sham! I had to return some parts and they send me back some other faulty parts and even missed a few parts that I send them and still waiting for them to send the missing parts back. This been going on for almost 2 months!
Stay away from OQO, they have very bad quality control. If you ever need to return something, you are in for a very long trip and trial and error and sending back and fro many parts for many months... also their distributor expansys is also not the best out there. in addition to being bloody expensive, they are also very slow, just like OQO itself I guess. Those two make a nice pair, equally slow and expensive.. a real match made in hell...

I'm not going to want one, I'm just curious.

there are actually quite a few ergonomic problems with the OQO IMHO, but besides those, there are also many quality problems with manufacturing...
because of the extreme weather conditions here in Australia, actually Melbourne where the temperature varies from 12 degrees celcius to 28 degrees in autumn on a single day, the OQO developed cracks in its two antennaes on the sides. The OQO antannaoes are just plastic stripes attached to both sides of the OQO, but because of these extreme weather conditions (yeah rite), the plastic expanded and cracked when it shrank back to its original size. Even though the antennaes are cracked, they still work though, but I put sticky tape around them
Anyway, the battery is bloody heavy and it doesn't last long (max 3 hours) unless you use the double density battery which weights double as much...
My charger died and after about a month I received a replacement charger. This new charger can charge the battery fine by itself, but locks up the OQO so you cannot have the OQO plugged into the mains and use it while it is charging... still waiting on a word on whether I will get another replacement charger. anyway, because of that, the OQO has been collecting dust for 2 months now....
-
on the other hand, if the oqo was as good as the initial hype we might have had have less of your time here, I find this tempoers my sympathy
-
any opinions on the OQO2, it looks to be a nicly built unit. first thing ill be doing is dumping windows on the machine for somthing a bit better
also on the warantee issue, ive talked to some sales reps at comercial places and they tell me the love extended warinties as its pure profit for them and dosent cost them anything at all (mainly due to problems comming out in the first 3 months and the last 3 months of a products lifetime, see "the product life cycle) so keep it in mind
not to mention i dont think i have a device that has had a warnetee for more than 1 hour of me getting it home, i get alot of questions when i tell peopple what my stuff does
ME: and so as you can see it plays mp3s, records TV skips ads and cures cancer in its spare time
Them: but that wasent in the ad
ME: well thats because i <wink wink nudge nudge> "upgraded" </wink wink nudge nudge> it
them: i didnt know the manufacturer put out an upgrade to do that
ME: ....

[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div] (http://index.php?act=findpost&pid=153293\")
from what Meanie says, the quality control and basic design of the OQO was very poor, so I would doubt that its successor is going to be perfect (probably a lot better but they have a long way to go).
for the price there are some nice UMPCs about (the Sony things look good, and conics have a few 2nd hand ones at good prices), and the number of tablets is increasing too, take a look at this one: [a href=\"http://www.internettablettalk.com/2007/02/05/a-maemo-ized-umpc/]http://www.internettablettalk.com/2007/02/...aemo-ized-umpc/[/url]
-
saw that one, waiting for someone to mention it:)
seems there are alot of arm bassed umpc style offerings coming up. funny that this should happen as i dont see the x86 as the best choice in this enviroment (they list a 4000mah battery which would be nice, wonder how that would stretch on a 15W via vs a 2 watt arm chip)
-
saw that one, waiting for someone to mention it:)
The Register had an article about how Intel are proposing to replace their Arm/XScale devices with x86 system on chip (SoC):
http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2007/02/05/in...eadies_x86_soc/ (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2007/02/05/intel_readies_x86_soc/)
they say it only takes 22W. At 5V that's over four amps, so you'd need a 4000mAh battery purely for one hour of full use, which means it ain't gonna be a PDA or even a small handheld like the Z!
I think that Arm processor plus accelerator chips is the best or even only way to get the performance/power ratio.
-
well your looking at more like 1.7v max and about 1.3v most of the time (assuming that the proc just dosent regulate it itself)
x86 in its current intel form is a death wish, it requires bridge chips and such as its a microprocessor not a microcontroller so it desnt have the IO built in and requires the bridge chips, works well if you upgrade your cpu all the time but not for a static design
i dont know, via seems to be better off in this arena as well as the 486 clones. they mention embedding the pentium M products but if they are thinking about that then they are missing the point. 25W is alot of heat, and while 2Ghz is nice you dont really need that much performance in most devices
i cant see what area they are targetting if they procede. perhaps the umpc market as the 22W was a maximum but look at the pa-semi anouncment today. 25W max draw with 2x10GBe, 4x1GBe, dual independent DDR controllers and 2 64bit power PC cores at up to 2GHz. i dont know how intel can compete with that. if you wanted to build a routor this thing has tones more IO potential than the pentium M, at full capacity i have no dought this thing would choke but it would choke alot latter than the intel as it dosent have to worry about choking its FSB

Just curious. Has anyone actually seen Sharp's EOL announcement? I've tried to search ezaurus.com but can't find it.
-
No official news so far.
-
I'm pretty sure they won't make a public announcement until the exiting Zaurus stocks are closer to depleted otherwise they might take too much of a loss on the current stock. I'm guessing it will be a month or two.

don't you dare buy an N800 and ruin that too :-)
seriously for a second, I think that we have to be realistic and accept that computer stuff quickly becomes obsolete, and if you're a late adopter of a "cult" product which doesn't gain mass market acceptance, you're going to have to hope there's a good community around the device.
I mean, at least we didn't buy Sony Mylos, right?

True--and I still have hopes that the "Cult of Z" will
*continue to work with the Z for some time to come
*be the basis for the next thing--like the neo or the pocketpenguin
*spread killer custom rom goodness to linux devices like the N800 or the H9

Same here. This is my PDA list.
Sharp PC-3x00 (Sharp discontinues a month after I get my units)
Psion series 3a (Psion discontinues it a few years after I buy my first then pulls out of the PDA market)
Palm Tungsten T3 (PDA market begins death spiral and Palm loses market lead to MS)
Sharp Zaurus SL-C1000 and 3200 (Sharp kills the line and focuses on Windows Mobile SmartPhones)
Who shall I mortally wound or kill next?
I think it will be BlackBerry since my boss is insisting that I get one.
I honestly tried to kill Windows CE in between my Psion and Palm years when I was given one at work but, it's too hard to kill something that is already braindead.
EDIT: If I do manage to kill the BlackBerry; I am definitely changing my sig to:
"BEHOLD! I am HoloVector, the Destroyer of PDA platforms. Tremble before me as I wipe out this market segment!"

With such a track record you could make a good living out of it... getting paid by the mainstream brands just to never buy anything from them :-)

Hi,
everytime I'm more and more interested in nokia devices. They are very hackable, and their effort to make them open and linuxable is noticeable; yesterday they did release a kit to easy porting C OSS to nokia handsets; it's a complex architecture, but the hardware is very good.
On the other had, I have to admit that windows mobile 5/6 is bad, but, given the neverending flow of cash M$ can put/puts on it, and the fact that ~90% of computers are windows powered, at the end they'll make it.
It's a pity but I think that, or the rest of the world goes with an unified effort for pcs/phones or eventually M$ will dominate all fields.
For M$ is just a matter of time given the unlimited cash available; any other company would have go into bankrupcy. It's like an infinite number of monkeys can eventually write the complete W. Shakespeare works.
My 0.02

I think it was only last year that the wince division in its 10 (or more?) years of history had a positive income. It is all the more astonishing when you take into account that for the last few years it has hardly any competition, Psion has long since left the market and Palm is floundering along. It lends weight to my suspicions that M$ had all along been paying manufacturers to use wince

Hi all,
let's bring some big fun in this thread ;-)
As we all "know", Sharp pulled the plug with the "last" production
run for February...
Now the fun part begins: We tried to order some more (because
with the "end of the line" sales increased big time). The answer
was "OK". Box came. Produced March 2007 (!)
*speechless*
Talked with the Sharp sales droid, WT* is going on ??
Sales droid : "How many do you need for April and forecast for
May ?"
No, we have no idea what the hell is going on at Sharp.
We got no explanation and (even if we got some info how long
they plan to continue) we won't comment this further.
For now, we expect everything. From out-of-stock tomorrow up
to a new model announcement next week.
Or maybe the rumor was just strategic to get rid of stock for the
new SL-C4000XL with 3D holographic XGA, toaster interface,
GSM, WiFi and bottle opener...
We don't know what kind of game they're playing, but for today
we can only confirm that fresh manufactured Zauri are available.
Happy and relaxed easter holidays to all OESF readers,

Way-hey! Thanks for the info, Marc, I figured SHARP had been planning that toaster option all along. Now if they would include a cake baker... I could have my cake and eat it too...
Oh come on, it's funny.

Naw, I couldn't take the money.
But, if Nokia or Palm wants to send me a bunch of BlackBerries and Windows Mobile units in order for my bad karma to rub off on those platforms, I would gladly oblige them.

NEW ZAURUS!!!!! CRAP!!!! AWSOME! im the first in line!

I guess at least they are not making 6000 any more.

Hi all,
some more informations and answers for you:
@daniel3000
It's definitely no Aprils joke. I just got the information
that the next shipment is on its way from Japan.
They really continue making them but today they
announced, that the price will go up a bit
@Cresho
No, sorry. THIS was a joke. There's no SL-C4000XL
coming. It was stopped because also Sharp engineers
are reading this forum and after they read Fish's
post, they're now looking how to include a cake baker.
The Bluetooth-Rice-Cooker interface is XML-based. So
they hope to include the cake-baker protocol within the
next 12 months.
(Zaurus Cake Baker SHARP CE-CB1 will be available as
external device only. Capacity up to 10 cpd/cakes per day)
@xjqian
The good news: They're still making SL-6000s.
The bad news: It's the japanese version and they're
so incredible expensive, that we decided to call the
SL-6000 "no longer available".
Funny sidenote: We just got a 10xpack of EA-BL09
batteries for the SL-6000. Produced March 2007(!).
Doesn't look like a totally dead product, eh ?
I'm off now, installing the webcam watching the garden
to see where they hide all the easter eggs for the kids

awww god damn!!! i mean how does one decide what to do now??? i was just about to order my c1000 from trisoft and now you're saying that there could be a new model in the works??? so i could just wait to see what happens but then again trisoft said that the price will go up.
i just dont know what to do now...

- I bow before the oracle that is TriSoft, font of all shipping Zaurus knowlege!
- I also feel considerably better. Thanks!!
-
this is amazingly good news. So why did Sharp say they were stopping production?
Normally these things are kept a secret otherwise they might not be able to sell remaining stock, either
- because people don't want to buy an obsolete product (Sony are v bad at this, they left left owners of Palm/Clie home and dry),
or
- there's a new product coming and noone buys an old model
In this case no new model came and they carried on production. It's unlikely that Sharp would have tested the water to see if there'd be a clamour to continue making them (as they don't appear to pay heed to users), as that's a high risk strategy. It could be that they were taken aback to find demand increased because people sitting on the fence waiting for the next model decided to get in a last-chance buy. After all, whilst the Z is flawed (sorry, but it is!), it has less flaws than any other current PDA.
Another possibility is that the new em-one has been delayed into production, or isn't a big seller or other problem and they have spare capacity so decided to make more Zs.
Maybe they were intending to launch a new Z model but there were problems with supply of parts (e.g. the "new" 20GB microdrives simply haven't appeared on the market).
Sadly, speculation apart, I suspect we'll never really know the full story of the zaurus strategy (there might not even be one, it often strikes me more as a drunk random walk through handheld technology!).

Perhaps we are witnessing a corporate power struggle between the Pro-Zaurus and Pro-Windows Mobile or Papyrus forces at Sharp. We know that the Zaurus has a solid following with the Japanese public so, perhaps they bolstered the Pro-Zaurus group with upper management so, the Zaurus line has been given a last minute reprieve.

It doesn't look too hard. I had my C3100 open earlier to look at the option of a full USB port. It looks like you just lift up the motherboard, pull out the old drive, and stick in a new one. I didn't look too closely, though.
The hardest part would seem to be finding a small enough screwdriver to open the Z. I bought a $5 set of philips-head screwdrivers at radio shack that work great.
-
Hi,
This may be off topic, if it is I am sorry. I am glad to hear the Z is not dead.
I have a c1000 that is great. And am considering getting another c1000 or 6000l.
Since this thread started I have been collecting a few apps I do not really need now but may need in the future. I am doing this because I am afraid they may become difficult or impossible to find. I really started doing this when zaurususergroup.org went down. Any thoughts?
Again if this is off topic I am sorry......
-
I tought this was zaurususergroup?
most stuff is pretty well mirrored, but keeping apps in storage isn't a bad idea.
why a 6000 or 1000 particularly?
-
I have a c1000 already so this would be a backup. I always really liked the 6000l and its form factor........

Funny, I HATE the slab form factor...Leaves the screen open to damage and buttons are easily pressed. The sliding keyboard is a nice touch, though. The screen is nice too...
-
I worry about the c1000's hinge becoming weak and damaged from repeated opening and closing. I like the slab because aside from an impact to the screen, there are fewer mechnical parts to become damaged.
But don't get me wrong the c1000 is an awesome machine all the way around.........

these days my 6k mostly lives in its cradle on my nightstand for reading and browsing, the 3100 travels more. I think the clamshell factor gives me more of a feeling of security--and the keyboard is much better. Of course if the family travels my wife brings the 6k, hence the sharprom setup

I'm a solid Z user. As long as they sell them/ I'll keep buying. BTW, I am using a 8gb internal drive.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=158185\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
I was talking about ram.
How hard was the drive swap-- I have a 6G that I might pop in the 3100 if it isn't like neurosurgery
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=158186\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
It isn't too hard.
The weakest point, in my opinion, is not to damage the screen cable connectors on the motherboard.
The locks for the cables have to be lifted UPWARDS, not pulled out, as it was the case with many older, larger versions of such connectors.
The plastic is very fragile.

Now that the UMPC market seems to be moving forward and with the recent Intel announcement about the Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs), I hope Sharp reworks the Zaurus to enter this market. In its current form it is oh so close to these devices already.
Build a new clamshell with the Sharp Em-One specs: 4.1 inch screen, 802.11, bluetooth, integrated camera, etc., but use the new Intel Menlow chipset. I would even take the Sharp Em-One (s01sh) as it is now, with the new Intel chipset and the ability to run on the cellular networks in the US.
Oh, it is so fun to dream.

we would if we had any hard informations.
We told you everything we know by now.
Fact is, that the 1000 and the 3200 are still in production.
But it was also fact in mid January that they cancel in Feb .
Now they act like they never announced it (but it was a
VERY clear statement in Janaury).
There're definitely no informations about a new model.
(You know that the 4000 was cancelled because of the
cake baker interface thingy )
Sorry, but we don't have any news for you.

Hi Trisoft,
whilst I don't expect you to give away your trade secrets, can you hint as to how many zauruses you've supplied?
It seems to me that there must be many more zauruses sold into Europe and USA than there are people on this forum, and since they don't change hands too often I wonder how many non-oesf members there are and what they are doing with them!
When/if you buy in another batch, would you be able to tell us what the manufacturing dates on them are, so we can try and guess whether Sharp are still making batches of them?
-
i'm new here, so i'd be interested in hearing from experienced z'ers how much of this speculation is (understandably) wishful thinking and how actually pr>0.33.
for example, is it logical that if sharp has spare manufacturing capacity and don't need to retool, they'd continue as long as they can? if so, that would be a manufacturing thing, and the designers could long since have been reassigned. no new models.
on that subject, i'm flabbergasted that the answers to these questions are unknowns... do sharp engineers keep secrets about what they are working on that close? in silicon valley, most people kind of know what most people are working on, kind of, in this type of situation.
-
Hi speculatrix,
It seems to me that there must be many more zauruses sold into Europe and USA than there are people on this forum, and since they don't change hands too often I wonder how many non-oesf members there are and what they are doing with them!
The answer is easy: A few thousand users that don't even
know, that they're working with a Zaurus
We sell only a few Zauri to Linux-geeks or endusers.
Most units go into professional / project sales. For
example one of our customers uses more than 1000
SL-C860/SL-C1000 with a special software for tour
planning / ordering / accounting. These Zauri are
used in delivery trucks and the truck driver just knows,
that this nice thing tells him what to drop off and how
many cash he has to take. He will never heard about
something like a "Zaurus" even if he use it every day.
Another nice application is the usage in helicopters:
http://www.eae.de/produkte_helimap.php (http://www.eae.de/produkte_helimap.php)
Also here, the pilot uses his "helimap" and don't
know that this is a Zaurus.
Funny sidenote: One of the most critical points here,
was to reduce the backlight brightness to make it
readable with night vision goggles.
A device with an open source platform is also very
interesting for users with, lets call it "high security
requirements" (dunno if they paint them in camo).
So there're a lot of people working with our beloved
gadgets every day, but they'll never join OESF
And we'll have an eye on the production dates, but
Sharp often starts a bigger production run and sells
the units over a few months. We'll keep you updated.

seems Sharp's announcement of the death of the Zaurus was somewhat premature. perhaps their wzero range hasn't been a magnificent success after all.

Anyone heard any credible or not so credible rumors of Sharp either reviving and updating the Zaurus or producing another handheld device, other than the W-Zero or EM One platforms?
I recently read where Sharp just developed a very nice multi-touch LCD that has built-in optical sensors in each pixel. Article said it would be able to act as a scanner and could even replace the keyboard. How would you like an updated Zaurus with an LCD in place of the keyboard and the ability to program the keyboard LCD to any keyboard format or even a giant touch pad?

actually, as cool as that could be, I think i prefer a simple keyboard.

Tactile feedback is quite nice, I must admit, though DS emulation would be killer.
-
How would you like an updated Zaurus with an LCD in place of the keyboard
The Zaurus uses a CG Silicon display; the "touch" technology display you are talking about would be something different. Also remember that you are making holes in the display therefore brightness must be lower.
Unless Sharp start making a 'touch' display at 5" I can't see this happening. Besides Zaurus is a dictionary product now or haven't you been looking at the software that comes packaged with the 1000 and 3200 ?

Trisoft, any news for the new year? Are any freshly manufactured batches still appearing?
-
Hi all,
Trisoft, any news for the new year?
nope. Status is like it was.
No new models coming, new units available for
orders of 500+. Our actual status is that we still
have new units on stock and we're going to sell
some of our "warranty replacement pool" of
SL-C1000 in the next weeks (about 15 units).

I went to PriceJapan a couple of days ago IIRC, and they had Zaurii listed, just not on the first page like they were.

Hi Speculatrix,
Trisoft, any news about whether Sharp have manufactured any new batches of Zs recently
last batch of SL-C1000 we got were produced in January 2008.
We also looked a bit puzzled about a 2008 production run.
"Officially" they're over and out since late 2007, but we still get some.

Oh my! That is somewhat encouraging. It sounds like the Zaurus factory is still semi-operational and Sharp brings it back online as needed to generate additional units. The high minimum unit order size must be fulfill their third party contract supplies sizes. For example Hitachi may require Sharp to order the MicroDrives in quantities of 500+ in order for Sharp to get their fixed contract price. I don't think I have ever heard of an large conglomerate do this type of demand manufacturing after the official end of life on the product line. But, I shouldn't be too surprised since Sharp has been doing custom design and manufacturing with Wilcomm for example. Now which Zaurus owner is the CEO of a well known and moneyed tech related firm so they can approach Sharp on designing a true next generation Zaurus?
-
that willcom/sharp D4 looks to be as close as we're going to get to SonOfZaurus. The thing is, the C3xxx motherboard looks as if there were pads on the PCB for bluetooth, bumping up the memory wouldn't be too hard, and adding wifi not too difficult - it would be relatively little effort for Sharp to have produced C3300 and C3300W models, they just lack the vision!

interesting - phone + zaurus

In the "at least it's not the same old, same old" department, AVING has spotted a handset from Sharp that looks and acts like a MID. The 9225H is surprisingly small and thin yet has a Sharp Zaurus-like keyboard inside that looks pretty darn functional. It has a 3.5-inch wide VGA screen and a little LED display on the outside while in handset mode for phone functions. This will probably never step foot out of Asia but it's great to see something totally different.

the good thing is that there are many zauruses (zaurii) around, and most of us will continue to use them for one purpose or another for quite some time since there's still nothing quite like it out there - it truly is a "cult classic" - despite the best efforts of Sharp!!!
I note that ebay prices on all models have remained good, thus "proving" my theory.
And also the community has been a magnificent success story. My thanks go to everyone here!
