Title: Any News On Familiar Development?
Post by: Master One on January 13, 2007, 05:25:12 am
The handhelds.org site doesn't show any recent news, so is there still someone working on familiar?

I really would like to get WPA working on my simpad, to be able to finally switch my access-point to a securer mode, and v0.8.4 still lacks a useable webbrowser (using minimo under GPE ATM, but that one is barely useable, I'd like to switch back to OPIE, if a recent version of konqueror would be available).

I only use my simpad for webbrowsing, so I can do without all the other apps, I really just need WPA + a useable webbrowser.

Can't comment on Familiar, however if someone finishes Linux 2.6 for the SIMpad and offers to take care about the machine specifics, then Angstrom would likely support the SIMpad.

What exacly do you mean by finishing 2.6?

I have started to play a bit with 2.6.19.1 [1].

What I found out atm.

- Zeckes mq200 driver seems to be working with a reproducable bug  [2]

UCB1300 stuff:
- the ts (touchscreen) driver seems to be working (only loaded the kernel (compiled with evdev build in) and did a cat /dev/input/event0)
- there is a audio driver but I didn't tested it yet
- Zeckes ucb related stuff (battery, simpad-switches) is broken because of pavels changes on the ucb1300 stuff for the ts driver . But I think the switches code didn't work anyway (k2-6-16-hh6).

I checked the source and I was starting to write a new switches driver. This driver is not in a working state atm. I have to do a lot of school related stuff so I don't know when I am able to complete it. But I will do as soon I have enought time.

I wasn't able to find out if the 2 LEDs are also connected to the ucb. But there is a driver for them which I didn't testet yet.

I don't know if there is a driver for the Smartcard reader.
Also I didn't try to get APM working.

Finishing means fixing the bugs you mention to get it into a (for users) usable state.

What are the machine specifics - simpad-2.6.config and a kernel.bb file or is it more?

Does the SIMpad Kernel must be compatible with the hh.org Kernel? Or is a patchset against a Vanilla Kernel also ok?

I now have a SVN repro at sf.net:

EDIT: changed the SVN link from OpenSVN to sourceforge.net (http://sourceforge.net/svn/?group_id=189832[/url)

A patchset against a vanille kernel would be appreciated. The hh.org kernel has kind of a problematic track record for the developers not being exactly übermotivated to get stuff into mainline.

I have created a new thred for Kernel devel. (Switches driver is complete)

https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=22826 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=22826)

I will also try to get the Kernel into openembedded but creating a bb for the virtual stuff seems to be harder then I thougt. So this could take a bit.

I now have build a .bb file for the new SIMpad Kernel for openembedded.
I have handed it in as a Bug report [1]. Hopefully it will be integrated into oe.

One thing still puzzels me. It don't create the neccessary device entrys (like /dev/console) at the rootfs dir. Does this have to do with the DEVFS section set at the simpad.conf file? do I have to set it at the include/simpad-2.4.conf file and delete it in simpad.conf?

I have created them per hand and rebuilded the Image. It is also possible to let the image boot without a /dev/console (wait verry long at unable to open console) and then remount the /dev with the bind option:

I will also provide 2.6 Angstrom images in a few days or a week. So that more people can try it or have an easier entry to the development. A detailed description about how to create a Angstrom Image for the SIMpad will also follow.

I will create a Image for you in the next few days.

APM is not working atm the mq200 driver was fixed by mrdata and the switches driver is complete also the battery driver. power button is not implemented jet. I didn't tested much in gpe so I don't know how useful the Image will be for you.

I have no clue about pdaXrom.

Hi MrNice,

thanks for your reply ... sorry ... little bit confused *g* pdaXrom questions in the wrong forum ... thanks for the image on simpad

How could I help ... not very good c++ or else programmer, but c is ok ...

hi, sorry I am not able to build up a Image atm. which is usable.  I will upload a more functional image as soon this is possible.

here [1] is one with which you can see most of the kernel stuff but you cannot log in via gpe. serial connection is possible.

c is what will help

the bigest problem atm. is that the simpad won't wake up after resume. mrdata trys to fix that (he is the one who fixed the mq200 driver as well). Else there are the audio and smartcard drivers missing. I am working on the gpio key (power button) and cs3 to sysfs implementation.

Hi mr_nice,

thanks for your invitation :-) ... I hope to get some time on the weekend ... but first problem I have to , is getting a clean and working development area for it.

Here are some questions:

Which development, sdk do you use for compiling? I think you use the tenet login on serial / usb console for debuging stuff ...

Is there something like a emulator for PC to do developement for simpad, maybe running apps on simpad and remotedisplay (only for console in forst step) ...

THX
Martin

p.s.: hope my english is not to much misunderstanding ...

Hi,
I am myself using a crosscompiler for the kernel and then I copy it to a cf card and boot the kernel from it. On the SIMpad I have flashed an Angstom image. I found this was the most convenient way for me to just do kernel development.

But I would recommand you openembedded.org. They are having a real good getting started page [1]. You can use this to generate fresh images or just compile the kernel.
If you need help with it just ask me. After you was able to build the first image. I will explain you how to include the latest patches from the svn.

If you than have a running 2.6 linux on the simpad you can connect to it via minicom.

The emulation question is about the distro at all I think. There is the possibility to build an Angstrom image for x86.

If you want to help the Angstroem Team the best place is to ask how on freenode.net irc channel #angstrom . If you want to write applications for the user interface I think you shuld contact some people at #gpe or #opie on the same irc server. If you want to do Kernel development you should ask me or mrdata about which parts are have to be done. Best way to do this is either on #oe or here in the forum.
