Title: Good Buy On A Z Mic
Post by: HoloVector on January 19, 2007, 05:42:16 pm
Okay, I went down to The Source by Circuit City this afternoon.  And saw this mic (http://www.thesourcecc.com/estore/product.aspx?language=en-CA&product=2616438) on the shelf.  I had my 3200 with me so, I tried it with the Voice Recorder software in Cacko.  It works!  The specs are quite close to the Conics one but this one is only $19.99CAN.  That's a great price to add another useful feature to your Zaurus.

The Source is owned by Circuit City and the Mic is labelled as the house brand NexxTech so, if you have a nearby CC then you might be able to pick one up there.

I haven't been able to find any from googling. Sorry.
If I recall correctly NEXXTECH is a Radio Shack brand name.
Maybe it's available under a different brand name in the US.

I googled the local circuit city and apparantly they have six in stock. I'd be willing to send one if anyone would like.

Hi guys,

Been a while since I posted, but I thought I would just chime in and mention that you can buy (what looks like) the exact same microphone on Ebay for about $8 (plus another $7 for shipping from Hong Kong):

Mini Microphone available on EBay (http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?sofocus=bs&sbrftog=1&from=R10&satitle=MINI+NOTEBOOK+MICROPHONE&sacat=-1%26catref%3DC6&sargn=-1%26saslc%3D2&sadis=200&fpos=06776&ftrt=1&ftrv=1&saprclo=&saprchi=&fsop=1%26fsoo%3D1&coaction=compare&copagenum=1&coentrypage=search)

Disclaimer: I have no association to the seller(s), as a matter of fact, I have not even purchased from them...  so I am not recommending anything, just mentioning the possibility.

Also, these obviously don't have the Nexxtech brand name.

Thanks for the tip.

Looks like it is a slightly different model since the main mic casing is different.

Well, with the shipping you are looking at $17CAN and since they are shipping it from Hong Kong the chances that a canadian will get hit with taxes and duties are high so, you won't be saving that much.

I found a site in UK
http://www.microanvika.com/audio-and-mp3-p...FO&PNO=SWS59301 (http://www.microanvika.com/audio-and-mp3-players/product.asp?TXT=INFO&PNO=SWS59301)

19.99 pounds

I searched Circuit City, using it's own search feature and didn't find any for here in the US
I don't know how to use google to search within a retailer's website.

Hello again,

I did some more googling around and found another Mini Microphone at an even better deal.  This one appears to pivot and is made by Olympus (ME-12) and is also a noise canceling microphone.  One possible issue though is that this Olympus Mic is MONO as oposed to the Nexxtech ones that appear to be STEREO.

Reviews are 3 out 5 (of 6 reviews) with the main complaint being that it is not as sensitive as most built-in mics (reviews stated it to be sensitive to about 10 feet, which makes sense as it is a noise canceling microphone and after 10 feet, the sound would fall in the background noise category anyway).

I'm not sure how this compares to the Nexxtech (or the Nextech-looking generic), but the price is just $8 from Amazon.com (through ANTOnline) with shipping of an additional $7.

However, shipping gets ALOT cheaper if you buy more than one:

Quantity.......Shipping Cost..............Cost per microphone (w/shipping incld.)
1.................$6.98............................$15.00
2.................$7.97............................$12.00
3.................$8.96............................$11.00
4.................$9.95............................$10.50
5................$10.94............................$10.25
10...............$15.89.............................$9.59
20...............$25.79.............................$9.25

So since these would be easy to ship from one forum member to another (a couple of stamps I would guess) it does lend itself to a group purchase if someone is willing to manage that sort of thing.

Oops, I forgot the link...so here it is:
Olympus ME-12 Noise Cancelling Microphone through Amazon.com (via ANTOnline) (http://www.amazon.com/Olympus-ME-12-Noise-Canceling-Microphone/dp/B00006HSBC?ref=nosim&t=savecitynet-20)

Mono is good though, because the Zaurus only records in mono anyway, doesn't it?
Correct me if I'm wrong.

I dont think there is a mic in the world that records stereo... the equipment just creates two channels...

Looking around more at Amazon, and while this is a totally different type of Microphone (wired lapel type), it seems to get very favorable reviews for the most part.  Most reviews say it dramatically improves the quality of the recordings, while keeping the recorder out of sight and safe from harm:

Well, here is one made by Olympus, but you may very well be right about it just creating two channels.  If it it didn't, the left and right are so close together that I doubt there would be much of a panning effect...not toomention the steep $49 price tag.

no, they're genuinely stereo mics, with directional pickup. to exhaust my technical knowledge, stereo strictly means "solid", and in theory the mics have to be at an equivalent point to the playback speakers to get accurate stereo presentation, so not ideal, but a lot better than mono.

if you use a dummy head and put the microphones where the ears are, it's called binaural, and playback is of course ideal for headphones.

yamaha and others have some neat tricks using DSPs to transform stereo sound into binaural using "head related transformation functions".

--edit - oops, fixed

p.s. until recently most computers only have mono microphone input but stereo aux/line-in. I think the latest Intel specification with high resolution sound calls for stereo microphones, but the zaurus is mono. I don't know if there's any way to do stereo sound input on the Z except by adding some sort of analogue/digital converter adaptor in the CF slot?

If you are in France, here is another Mic:
http://www.pearl.fr/article-PE5530-MICROPHONE.html (http://www.pearl.fr/article-PE5530-MICROPHONE.html)
I tried it under pdaxrom beta3 using KHdRecord. It works great as long as you are very close to the Mic. You can't beat the price: 4,90eur(mic) + 4,90eur(shipping). [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Cool thanks. I started to get excited.  Read the specs, got more excited. Then I realised it costs $41.   So I thought "well, you've gotta pay to play."  Then I remembered to add shipping, oh wait it's $41 + $13.66 shipping.  I may wait on that abit.  /khan!

Yeah it could get up there in price.  I guess it's easier when someone buys it for you as a present

I picked one up, thanks for the tip!
I keep forgetting to use it in meetings though.

Have you tried it with krecord yet?  I've only used it in the Voicerec app in Cacko

I just tried Khrecord in a seminar yesterday night.  It worked well with .wav files and even .ogg.  I just wish I could bring up the gain a bit more.  I had it to 100 and oss mixer to 100.  But it seems like the Sharp Record app worked better.  I just reloaded my 5500 with the Sharp Rom and test it out again and create two files one with KhdRecord and the other with the Sharp voice app.  I'll try to post them on the Tyrannozaurus blog.
